2007 Sunshine State Action For UMP Modifieds Will Commence With Feb. 1-3 Visit To North Florida Speedway
EVANSVILLE, IN - Nov. 30, 2006 - UMP Modified racers can kick off their annual winter pilgrimage to the Sunshine State a bit earlier in 2007, thanks to the first annual North Florida Winternationals set for Feb. 1-3 at North Florida Speedway.
The three-eighths-mile dirt track in Lake City, Fla., will host UMP-sanctioned open-wheel Modifieds for the first time as part of a Winternationals card that also includes the O'Reilly United Sprint Car Series and the oval's regular Hobby and Pure Stock classes.
UMP Modified teams will have a chance to get acquainted with the North Florida layout during an open practice session on Thurs., Feb. 1, at 7 p.m. Gates will open that evening at 4 o'clock.
Then full racing programs will be run on Fri., Feb. 2, and Sat., Feb. 3, with pit gates opening at 3 p.m. on Friday and 2 p.m. on Saturday.
Friday night's UMP Modified feature will pay $800 to win and $80 to start, while Saturday night's A-Main will offer a $1,000 top prize and $100 to take the green flag. Officials expect to announce bonuses that will make it possible for one driver to pocket $2,500 in cash for two nights of work.
An added attraction for the UMP Modifieds will be a $100-to-win dash on Saturday night pitting the top-six finishers from Friday night's feature.
The 2007 UMP Modified national points race does not officially begin until March 30, but by rule drivers can count their one best finish in a "pre-season" race toward their points total - thus giving everyone who competes at North Florida, or in the Feb. 6-13 UMP Modified shows at Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, Fla., a chance to start their campaigns on a high note.
North Florida Speedway is located off U.S. 41 and 441 just south of Lake City, Fla. The facility is two-and-a-half hours northwest of Daytona Beach, one hour west of Jacksonville and one hour northwest of Gainesville.
For more information on the UMP Modified events at North Florida Speedway, contact UMP Director Sam Driggers at 812-426-1200.
Bill Frye Ready To Chase Fifth Title After Being Honored As 2006 MARS Late Model Champion
CONCORD, NC - Nov. 29, 2006 - Bill Frye will make a drive for five.
The veteran racer from Greenbrier, Ark., revealed his intentions when he was honored for his fourth career Mid-America Racing Series (MARS) title during the DIRT Motorsports-owned Late Model tour's 2006 'Night of Champions' awards banquet on Nov. 18 inside the Clarion Hotel at the Grand Palace in Branson, Mo.
"My plan was to announce my retirement (from driving) if we won the championship," said Frye, who has been tossing dirt Late Models around the country's ovals for more than a quarter-century. "But after the season was over me and my wife (Carol) talked about it, and we said, 'We're not ready to quit yet.'"
That's bad news for Frye's MARS competition but good news for the regional tour, which will have its most prolific champion back for another season in 2007.
Frye entered the '06 campaign tied atop the alltime MARS championship list with Terry Phillips of Springfield, Mo., who earned titles in 2000, 2004 and 2005. The longtime rivals - and only champs in MARS history - battled hard in '06 to be the first four-time king, with Frye capturing the $25,000 championship prize by a mere eight points over Phillips, who earned a $20,000 runner-up check.
Jeff Taylor of Cave City, Ark., finished third in the MARS standings (worth $14,000), followed by Steve Rushin of Poplar Bluff, Mo. ($12,000) and Billy James of Sikeston, Mo. ($11,000), who also received the series Polesitter Award for earning the most poles this season.
DIRT MotorSports distributed a total of $121,250 to the top-15 finishers in the 2006 MARS standings - arguably the most lucrative points fund for a regional Late Model tour in the country.
Frye, who won four times and racked up eight second-place finishes in the season's 19 events, had no doubt about what made him a MARS champ for the first time since 2003.
"I wanted it worse than anything," said Frye, who won twice at Missouri's Lebanon I-44 Speedway and single races at Kentucky Lake Motor Speedway and West Plains (Mo.) Speedway. "That's how I've won races all my life. It always been, I'm gonna work and race harder than everybody else, and that's what we did this year."
That wasn't Frye's mindset for the previous two seasons, however. By his own admission, his performance slipped. He attributed his drop-off to a combination of factors, including booming business at his 'GRT by Frye' speed/chassis shop, family commitments and the physical and emotional drain that invariably results from years of grueling travel.
"The last few years I got lazy, and it showed," conceded Frye. "We got so busy building cars and doing repairs at the shop, our on-track stuff kinda went on the backburner.
"It didn't help that my family couldn't go to all the races with me, and maybe a little burnout from all the racing set in."
Thoughts of retirement naturally crept into his head, but calling it a career is easier said than done for a short-track lifer like Frye.
"For the last three years I've been trying to figure out how I could just quit," revealed Frye. "It's not something I could decide overnight. Racing is my livelihood, it's how I pay my bills, so I had to think real hard about how I could get out (of driving) and keep my business going.
"At first, I decided that if I'm gonna have to keep going to the track to talk to racers, I might as well race too. But after awhile I was getting tired of driving up-and-down the road (to races), so I got ready to take the next step."
Frye paused, and then continued, "Last winter I decided, I'll show 'em I could still win a (MARS) championship (in '06), then be done. I could walk away while I'm on top and then just build hot-rods."
Frye didn't gear up for a final rush in '06 by purchasing brand-new engines; he stuck with five-year-old pieces he had on hand. But he did flash a renewed personal vigor, which translated into more success on the track.
"I'm not bragging, but I've been doing this so long I can run up front by instinct," said Frye. "But it takes more than that to be a champion, and this year I went back to focusing on my driving, on watching the racetrack, on setting up the car."
As Frye racked up strong finishes and seized control of the MARS point standings behind the wheel of his familiar Kuntz/Petroff Towing GRT No. 66, his certainty about retiring began to dwindle. The fact that his 11-year-old daughter started accompanying him to most events seemed to put him at ease.
"I could go the track and focus on driving again," he said. "Racing was fun again."
Too fun to give up, in fact, so Frye will be back prowling the MARS trail in 2007. He'll make some changes to ensure that the good feelings he experienced this season will continue.
"I'm gonna back off the business to where we can concentrate on racing," said Frye. "I'm gonna sell five new cars (rather than as many as 15) a year and I'm not gonna build any new cars during the racing season."
Except for some UMP and other specials in the Missouri/Illinois/Kentucky/Arkansas area, Frye isn't going to expand his racing schedule beyond the MARS tour.
"Everybody knows Bill Frye who's gonna know Bill Frye," he said. "I don't need to travel all over to race.
"I just want to concentrate on racing and enjoy life."
Several special awards were presented during the MARS gala.
* Will Vaught, 20, of Crane, Mo., was named the 2006 MARS Rookie of the Year. The up-and-coming driver finished eighth in the point standings.
* Jordan Jones, 18, of Beebe, Ark., was recognized as the Rookie of the Year runner-up.
* Rushin was honored as the Most Improved Driver.
* Brandon McCormick of Lebanon, Mo., received the Sportsman of the Year award.
* GRT Race Cars of Greenbrier, Ark., once again got the nod as the tour's Chassis Builder of the Year.
* Phillips received a new GRT chassis in a drawing among the drivers who had perfect attendance on the MARS tour.
Following a successful 2006 season that saw MARS run 19 events at 10 tracks in three states, tour director Kim Norris announced that the 2007 schedule is shaping up to be even more exciting. She said dates are still be negotiated with track promoters and a complete '07 sked should be released in the coming weeks.

UMP Adds Two Entry-Level Divisions To Sanctioning Lineup In 2007
EVANSVILLE, IN – Nov. 7, 2006 – Two entry-level racing classes will be added to the United Midwestern Promoters (UMP) fold in 2007, bringing to seven the number of divisions sanctioned by the DIRT MotorSports-owned organization.
Best known for sanctioning dirt Late Model and open-wheel Modified racing at nearly 100 tracks across the country, UMP is expanding its divisional lineup with economical Factory Stock and Four-Cylinder classes in hopes of providing aspiring drivers another path to begin an advance through the UMP ranks.
“This is a way to recognize all the racers who are just starting out and make them part of something,” said UMP director Sam Driggers. “Now when they move up to other classes, they’ll already know what UMP is and what UMP can do for them.”
Both divisions will bring tracks’ existing entry-level classes under the UMP umbrella. The Factory Stock classification includes such divisional names as American Stocks, Hobby Stocks and Novices, while the Four-Cylinder class encompasses divisions such as Mini-Stocks, Pure Stocks, Hornets and Warriors.
The UMP Factory Stocks and Four-Cylinders will follow all local track rules with one exception: cars in both divisions must run street tires only.
Both classes will have UMP National points races in 2007. Twenty races will be used to determine the National point standings, meaning drivers will have an opportunity to begin replacing their worst finishes after reaching that mark.
UMP has established a $2,650 points fund for the National points battles, with $500 earmarked for the first-ever UMP national champion in each class. The top 20 drivers in the National standings will receive points-fund cash at the annual UMP Awards Banquet.
“We’re starting with a National points fund for the two divisions,” said Driggers. “If the drivers in the divisions get involved with UMP, we will add more points money in the years to come.”
Drivers must be UMP members to be eligible to share in the Factory Stock and Four-Cylinder points funds. A membership will cost $75 per driver with UMP insurance included.
Upon joining UMP, members will receive the organization’s regular newsletter as well as a membership kit that includes a membership card, decals and other items.
In 2006 UMP sanctioned five divisions – dirt Late Models, open-wheel Modifieds, Sportsman, Limited Modifieds and Street Stocks – and 87 racetracks. The organization will distribute over a half-million dollars in points fund cash during its annual awards banquet on Jan. 20 at the Springfield (Ill.) Hilton.
The 2007 technical rules for all UMP divisions except the Late Models have been released. Competitors can obtain a copy of the rules by visiting the UMP website at www.umpracing.com and printing them; calling the UMP office at 812-426-1200; or contacting their local UMP tracks. Sets of rules will also be available from UMP officials at selected off-season trade shows.
The UMP Late Model division’s 2007 rules are currently being completed and are expected to be released shortly.

An Atomic XR, Inc. Release Contact: Barry Braun, [email protected] or 320-230-2883 GUEST SPEAKER C.J. RAYBURN, BOB HARRIS MODIFIED WORKSHOP TO HEADLINE RACEMN MOTORSPORTS EXPO SEMINAR LINE-UP ST. CLOUD, Minn. (Oct. 25) – Drivers and mechanics are always searching for an advantage – both big and small – to give them any edge that will help them make it to victory lane. And while horsepower and quality parts are very important, all the money in the world can’t substitute for experience in setting up one’s race car. Competitors can get an advantage on Saturday, Nov. 12, at the RACEMN Motorsports Expo presented by Lucas Oil and Awesome Racewear as Bob Harris presents a one-hour Modified Workshop at 1 p.m. on the main stage of the arena. Capping off the day-long events will be legendary car builder and racer C.J. Rayburn as he entertains and enlightens the show’s audience. Harris has been involved in the racing world for more than 25 years and has truly become an expert in the industry. His modified chassis design is legendary, with over 10,000 recorded feature wins, while his research and development has redefined the Modified racing Industry. Now, Harris brings his valuable insight and knowledge to the RACEMN Motorsports Expo presented by Lucas Oil and Awesome Racewear in an effort to help you learn what it takes to win more races. “I plan to use my mock tail section with the rear suspension on it, and give a one-hour talk about roll steer and it’s affect on the handling of your racecar,” said Harris. Roll steer is defined as the change in wheel base when the rear suspension angles change during chassis roll or suspension movement. This movement causes the rear axle housing to move forward or backward. Any time you change suspension angles to promote forward traction it can have a counter effect causing loose rear roll steer. In contrast, making suspension adjustment to correct roll steer usually will result in the loss of forward traction. “It is very import to understand how suspension changes can have a counter affect on other areas of your race car,” he added. C.J. Rayburn may tell you he’s no race car driver, but his driving record speaks for itself. Not only have Rayburn’s cars rewritten the record books, but Rayburn himself holds 16 asphalt and dirt track records (some of which are world records) -- an accomplishment no other driver/builder can claim. Ultimately, Rayburn is a driver with a builder’s mentality, as well as a builder with a driver’s mentality. “The only way to learn about a race car is to drive one,” Rayburn said. “A big advantage of my driving experience is when one of my customers is having trouble, but it’s not the car at fault, I can talk to him as a race driver and not just as a car builder.” As guest speaker at the RACEMN Motorsports Expo presented by Lucas Oil and Awesome Racewear, Rayburn says he will “keep them in their seats.” Rayburn will help close out the program with a Q & A session from show attendees. “I could keep everybody interested for seven or eight hours,” he joked. “Whatever the question is, I can give them an accurate and honest answer.” Rayburn will also be available at the Rayburn North by Terry Casey booth at the entrance of the building. Stop by and view the new 2007 Rayburn that Casey plans to pilot next year and chat with CJ before the seminar. Several insightful seminars will dot the entire “Hardcore Industry Interaction” day on the main stage: 10:00 am - Jennifer Phierring (Speednet Direct) 11:00 am - Nate Theisse (QA1 Shocks) 12:00 pm – Major announcement from RACEMN/Lunch Break 1:00 pm - Bob Harris Modified Workshop 2:00 pm – Guest Speaker C.J. Rayburn 3:30 pm - Major announcement from DTRA All seminars are free of charge to show attendees. The RACEMN Motorsports Expo presented by Lucas Oil and Awesome Racewear will be a dynamic, hands-on motorsports exposition that will offer a world of information, products and discussions from various members of the high-performance industry. Located at St. Cloud State University’s Hallenbeck Fieldhouse in St. Cloud, Minn., the inaugural event will offer something for every motorsports enthusiast -- from the casual fan to professional race teams. The RACEMN Motorsports Expo presented by Lucas Oil and Awesome Racewear is slated for Nov. 10-11. PAVED TRACK DIRT TRACK RELEASED BY PUBLISHER COASTAL 181
Newburyport, MA, July 31, 2006 – Motorsports publisher Coastal 181 has announced the release of its latest title, PAVED TRACK DIRT TRACK. The book covers the complete history of two famed race tracks, Old Bridge Stadium in New Jersey and Nazareth Raceway in Pennsylvania.
PAVED TRACK DIRT TRACK author Lew Boyd chose Old Bridge and Nazareth to exemplify the heart of East Coast modified racing. One asphalt and the other dirt, the two notorious speedways both ran on Sunday nights, usually open competition. Each attracted road warriors and outlaws from Maine to Florida, as well as a dedicated core of homegrown heroes. Boyd conducted more than 100 interviews with living legends like Mario Andretti, Frankie Schneider, Pete Frazee, Wally Dallenbach, Tommy Hager, Gil Hearne, Bob Pickell, and Buzzie Reutimann, as well as capturing the stories of many whose lives ended tragically on the race track, like Jackie McLaughlin, Otto Harwi, and Mike Grbac. Then there are tales of the feisty Eastern Bandits like Ed Flemke and Denny Zimmerman and the NASCAR “drop ins” like Ned Jarrett, Bobby Allison, and Fireball Roberts, who came to test their mettle on these challenging tracks.
PAVED TRACK DIRT TRACK covers the evolution of racing from just after World War II right up to the 1990s. The formative years were gritty, colorful, and dangerous, presenting a kind of racing that would never be permitted or possible today. The book includes 330 evocative photographs, many borrowed from private scrapbooks and collections and never before published.
PAVED TRACK DIRT TRACK follows Coastal 181’s publication of GOTTA RACE! by Ken Schrader and Joyce Standridge, HOT CARS COOL DRIVERS, RICHIE!, BUGSY!, Life Wide Open, and other highly acclaimed books that document the drama and color of American oval track racing and its daring drivers.
Soft-cover with 232 pages, PAVED TRACK DIRT TRACK is available at $23.95 plus 6.00 S&H (US). To order, call Coastal 181 toll free at 877-907-8181 or online at www.coastal181.com

$25,000 First Financial Triple Crown Bonus
Posted for USAC Race Winner Illinois and DuQuoin State Fairs!!!!
For further information on this news release contact Bob Sargent of Track
Enterprises at 217-764-3200 or Jay Hardin at
[email protected]
A "Triple Crown" once again calls attention to traditional American
championship racing as twenty-three year old Californian Josh Wise attempts
to become the first winner in 27 years of an open wheel racing trifecta by
capturing the last two legs of the the First Financial Bank "Triple Crown"
of the United States Auto Club Silver Crown Championship Series. Wise
already has the 54th Hoosier Hundred trophy from the Indiana State
Fairgrounds on his mantle, and if he can capture the 46th Tony Bettenhausen
100 at Springfield on August 19 and the 56th Ted Horn 100 at DuQuoin on
September 3 he will pocket a cool $25,000 bonus posted by First Financial
Bank of Terre Haute Indiana.
National championship style racing had a "Triple Crown" from 1971 until 1980
consisting of 500 mile races at Indianapolis, Pocono and Ontario. In 1978 Al
Unser became the only driver to win the triple crown by capturing the
Indianapolis 500, the Schaefer 500 at Pocono and the California 500 at
Ontario. If Wise can win the next two one mile dirt track events on the USAC
Silver Crown schedule, the driver of one of two Tony Stewart-Mopar cars in
the series can join the four time Indy winner as just one of two drivers to
capture an open wheel championship racing "Triple Crown".
Wise faces a difficult task as a number of drivers will be attempting to
keep him from collecting the $25,000 bonus. History is also not on Wise's
side as just thirteen men in auto racing history have won racing events on
all three of the dirt miles at Indianapolis, Springfield and DuQuoin and
just seven of those drivers turned the trick in upright championship dirt
track machines. Further, since 1953 just four drivers, Jimmy Bryan. A.J.
Foyt, Al Unser and Jack Hewitt have won the Hoosier Hundred, the Tony
Bettenhausen 100 at Springfield and the Ted Horn 100 at DuQuoin in the same
year!
The First Financial "Triple Crown" bonus was the idea of First Financial
Bank CEO Don Smith, a long time auto racing enthusiast and former
Indianapolis and USAC car owner and Track Enterprises CEO Bob Sargent, the
promoter for auto racing at the Indiana, Illinois and DuQuoin State fairs.
"We are thrilled that First Financial Bank has brought the "Triple Crown"
concept to national championship dirt track racing,", said Sargent. "Don
Smith has been a long time supporter of auto racing, especially the Silver
Crown cars with his sponsorship of the legendary Gary Bettenhausen and of
Jeff Swindell, both frequent winners in the Silver Crown cars on the dirt
miles. I am certain that the $25,000 bonus posted plus the tradition and
history of the three 100-mile dirt track races will generate a lot of
interest among fans and competitors alike."
Josh Wise led just one lap, the last one, passing teammate Levi Jones to win
a thrilling Hoosier Hundred. The Wisconsin born Wise is the current one lap
track record holder at Springfield and continues his quest for the First
Financial "Triple Crown" bonus on Saturday, August 19 at the Illinois State
Fair. Should he capture the 46th Tony Bettenhausen 100, he would need only
to capture the 56th Ted Horn 100 at DuQuoin on Sunday night, September 3 to
pocket over $34,000 at DuQuoin, the largest payday in DuQuoin State Fair
auto racing history.
Tickets for both the 46th Bettenhausen 100 and the 56th Horn 100 are on sale
now at the Illinois State Fair box office at 217-782-1979, the DuQuoin State
Fair box office at 618-542-1535, at Track Enterprises at 217-764-3200 or at
any Ticketmaster location. Fans can follow the progress of Josh Wise in his
quest for the First Financial Triple Crown at

The Hoosier Hundred-A LOOK BACK
With the resurrection of the Hoosier Hundred, the Track Enterprises staff
thought this would be a good time to take a look back at some previous
runnings of the Hoosier Hundred to help race fans and competitors gear up
for the 54th edition of this great dirt track championship event.
Five Years ago-the 51st Hoosier Hundred was washed out on it's original May
date two nights before the 500, and again the following day when heavy rain
turned the mile into a quagmire. The Foyt group once again rescheduled the
event on the US Grand Prix weekend in late September, and on a cool Friday
night an excellent crowd returned to the Indiana State Fairgrounds.
Young Michael Lewis wowed the crowd by backing his car into turn one and
cutting quick time for the night at over 114 miles an hour in
qualifications, but arguably Johnny Parsons stole the show with a pleasing
rim ride to the front in the last chance race, then duplicating that rim
ride from 2lst to the lead by midway, only to have the car go away resulting
in a 5th place fmish. When the checkered flag flew Indiana native Tony
Elliot had his second Hoosier Hundred trophy in hand for car owner Gene
Nolen, taking the lead from Jerry Coons, Jr. on the 83rdlap. Fellow Texan
Paul White nailed down his first USAC Silver Crown title with a 7th place
run. The race marked the dirt car debut of fellow Texan A.J. Foyt IV, the
grandson of six time Hoosier Hundred winner A.J. Foyt. The race also marked
the last Hoosier Hundred appearance of three-time winner Jack Hewitt.
Ten Years ago-the Hoosier Hundred actually took place in May of 1996, when
it was actually scheduled for September of 1996. A.J. Foyt had taken over
promotion of the May Hulman 100 and the September Hoosier Hundred in 1991.
Foyt canceled the September date during the summer, citing attendance as a
factor. As a result, the officially recognized Hoosier Hundred is the
100-miler run at the fairgrounds in May of 1996.
Rains forced the postponement of that event until the next afternoon, when
cars took to a somewhat sloppy Indiana State Fair oval. George Snider looked
as if he had captured his first ever 100-mile race on the Indiana State Fair
oval when he brought the Skoal Beast across the finish line first, however
in the post race tech inspection the Snider-Foyt car was found to be eleven
pounds underweight, disqualifying the run and handing Dave Darland what
would be his second win in the Hoosier Hundred.
Twenty years ago-A warn September morning saw track preparation one of the
main items of note for the 34th Hoosier Hundred, as a reworked surface and
an attempt to cut the track deeper and water heavier made for an interesting
surface. From the drop of the green flag in practice it was quite evident
that the only way around was the pole, as deep holes and ruts a car length
off the pole made running any higher in the corners quite an adventure.
Larry Rice in the Lefevre 5 won the pole, but to no one's surprise it was
Jack Hewitt, who had dominated the entire season, capturing the $12,500
first prize. Several red flags stopped the event, including a spectacular
wreck in turn three in which Warren Mockler flipped, and his fuel tank
caught fire destroying several yards of canvas used to keep dirt from flying
out of the track.
Twenty-five years ago-It was warm and humid on September 12, 1981 for the
29th Hoosier Hundred as some familiar names graced the pit area. Mel Kenyon
had picked up his first champ car ride in years with the Blackie Fortune
team, while Al Unser, Jr. took over the cockpit of the Gary Stanton 75.
Winner of the very first dirt track divisionlSilver Crown event at Nazareth
in 1971, Jim McElreath also appeared on the Hoosier Hundred entry list. One
name that was expected but failed to appear was A.J. Foyt. Of course, A.J.
had good reason, Defending USAC Dirt Car champ Gary Bettenhausen, 1977
titlist Larry Rice and Rich Vogler were locked in a battle for the first
Silver Crown title in 1981. The Hoosier Hundred, usually run off at about 2,
had the entire schedule moved back in order to accommodate far traveling
race fans. Heavy watering moved the start back further and led to a race
track that had a cushion in hot laps, but quickly developed into a very
slick oval. Rice won the pole in the Pizza Hut 55 with a slow lap at just
over 100 miles an hour, while Bettenhausen put himself in the 14 originally
slated for Foyt, and put Steve Chassey in his own #1. Rice proceeded to lead
all 100 laps on his way to an emotional $11,000 win, but that wasn't the
whole story. He was dogged the entire distance by Vogler and by crowd
favorite Bettenhausen. G.B. had clipped the inner rail early on, and the
left front went flat by lap 30, meaning G.B. three wheeled the car for the
last 70 miles.
Thirty years ago-the Hoosier Hundred held on the bi-centennial played to a
full house in September of 1976, and featured an entry list with names like
Parsons, Foyt, Hurtubise, Engelheart and Carter. Parsons, driving Tassi
Vatis' Ol Herman dirt car, rode the cushion to the pole position.
Fans witnessed a multi groove race track and some spectacular cushion rides
until tragedy struck on lap 51. Parsons, Bubby Jones and Jan Opperman were
all locked in a classic duel for the lead. Parsons slowed suddenly in turn
thriee and opperman rode over a rear tire flipping the Longhorn 12. As Opp
was climbing from his stalled machine, his car was hit in the roll cage by
another car, essentially ending the career of the racing Hippie. The race
resumed under a pall as Opp was carted away, but the show put on by Foyt and
Joe Saldana quickly perked up the crowd. Saldana beat Foyt to the checkers
as A.J. 's car went sour in the closing laps. This race also marked the last
Hoosier Hundred for P.A. announcer Sid Collins, as the Voice of the 500
would pass away the next May.
Forty years ago-The Beatles were two years removed from a 'smashing'
appearance at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, and a young man from across the
pond who would take the auto racing world by storm was in his second season
of championship racing, entering 1966 as the defending National Champion.
Mario Andretti was well settled with the Dean Van Lines crew by the time
September 1966 rolled around, he had won the 1965 title as a virtual rookie
on the championship trail, won the pole with blazing speed for the 1966
"500" and had won on virtually every type of race track that existed.
Except for a dirt mile. Because of his slight build it was thought that the
dirt might be Andretti's weakness, but surprisingly it turned out to be one
of his strengths. Thanks to the invention of power steering, and the
mechanical work of Clint Brawner, Mario was able to put the Dean Van Lines
Kuzma dirt car on the outside of the front row next to arch nemesis Foyt.
Before an overflow crowd of nearly 25,000, Foyt took the lead from the pole
followed by Andretti and Arnie Knepper. A.J. 's Sheraton Thompson Meskowski
led Andretti for 97 circuits around the slick one mile oval, before the
brake pedal broke giving the win to Mario. A philosophical Foyt tossed the
brake pedal out on the mainchute during the cool off lap, while Andretti
took the points on the way to his second national title.
Fifty years ago-Nineteen hundred and fifty six mean that Elvis was on the
verge of taking the music industry by storm, poodle skirts and flat top
haircuts were in style, America and Russia were in the midst of the 'cold
war' and the '56 Chevrolet Bel Air was a hot rodder's dream.
On the championship race tracks of the United States, it meant that fans
came out in droves to watch the exploits of the "Arizona Cowboy", big Jimmy
Bryan. Car owner Al Dean and chief wrench Clint Brawner won the first
Hoosier Hundred in 1953 with Bob Sweikert wheeling their Kuzma built dirt
car. After Sweikert left the team, Bryan became the driver of choice. Bryan
finished second in the dirt car to Bill Vukovich at Indy in 1955, won the
Hoosier Hundred and the national title. He repeated as Hoosier Hundred
winner in 1955 but lost the national title to Sweikert. Bryan came into the
1956 race on the verge of a second national title, helped by the misfortune
suffered by Indy 500 winner Pat Flaherty who suffered season ending injuries
on the dirt at Springfield, an event Bryan won. Unfortunately, Sweikert was
also missing, the victim of a fatal accident at Salem earlier in the year.
Big Okie Jud Larson introduced himself to championship fans in a big way
when he broke the track record in John Zink's dirt car. Larson broke from
the pole and led the first 71 circuits before Bryan, who started tenth
overhauled him. The "Cowboy" would not be caught beating Hoosier favorite
son Pat O'Connor, Rodger Ward and a fading Larson to the checkers.
The 54th running of the Hoosier Hundred promises to add to the legend and
excitement of Amenca's grand 100-mile national championship races. The 54th
running of the Hoosier Hundred takes place at the Indiana State Fairgrounds
on Friday night, May 26 two days before the 90th Indianapolis 500 and in

[Cedar Falls, IA] - - The National Championship Racing
Association has joined the RaceRPM.com Post-Race line
for the 2006 racing season. NCRA race fans will be
able to hear post-race reports from the track on
select races this season.
"We're excited to be working with Bucky and
RaceRPM.com to advance and promote this technology,"
NCRA media relations director Randy Fisher said. "It
provides another way for NCRA fans to learn about the
race shortly after the checker and also introduces our
three divisions to a new audience via the Internet."
Race fans that are not able to make it to the track
will be able to stay on top of the action by logging
onto RaceRPM.com. Shortly after the checkered flag
falls, there will be an audio file that anyone can
download for free. RaceRPM.com also provides a
Flash-based player to play these .MP3 files.
"We also plan to use this audio for our newest segment
called 'Race Ready,'" added RaceRPM.com owner Bucky
Doren. "Race Ready started out as a feature we
produced for a few radio station in the Midwest
focusing on NASCAR. It has grown it something much
larger than a two-minute segment."
"The internet version is mostly dirt news. We include
sound bites that we gather from our trackside
coverage," Doren explained. "We plan to include these
post-race reports from the NCRA. We have already
begun talking with a few other racing groups, and they
are very interested in joining Team RaceRPM.com."
"If we get enough interest, we may break the dirt news
out into its own feature," closed Doren. RaceRPM.com
is also working on adding NCRA driver interviews to
their site later this summer.
The first weekend for NCRA post-race reports is this
weekend. On Saturday, April 29th, the NCRA Sprint Car
Series stops at Jetmore Motorplex (Jetmore, KS). The
next night will see the Sprint Cars travel to Wakeeney
Speedway (Wakeeney, KS). The NCRA will upload
post-race recaps after each night of racing.

The United Late Model Series (ULMS) is
proud to announce the launch of their new website,
www.unitedlatemodelseries.com,
designed by Paul Oyler of Oyler Action Photography in Mercer, Pennsylvania.
ULMS Director, Chris Zuver stated, “For the past two years, I had been doing
my own site through MSN groups. Recently, I had my email account hacked into
and actually lost control over my site, thus I decided to have someone else
design a new site for me as I was beginning to lose time in maintaining the
site the way I wanted to.
I contacted Paul, asking him if he could do a new site for the series, and
in a matter of days, it was up and going. Paul has taken photos in the past
for ULMS, both for media purposes and for his Photography sites (oyleractionphotos.com
and steelerdirtfreak.com). It was a natural choice to have him design the
site!”
The new website can be found at

New tools this year include increased fines, loss of license and photo enforcement
CHICAGO—The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) joined with the
State Police and Illinois Tollway to remind motorists construction season is
about to kick in to gear and warn that tough new laws are on the books that
target drivers who flout work zone speed limits and endanger the lives of
construction workers and other drivers.
“Next week is Work Zone Safety Week and the traditional beginning to highway
construction season. We want to send a message to motorists now to slow down
in work zones,” IDOT Secretary Timothy W. Martin said. “If you are caught
speeding in a work zone, at minimum you will be looking at a fine of $375,
at worst, you can kill yourself, a loved one or a worker.”
Under enhanced penalties passed by the Legislature and signed into law by
Gov. Rod Blagojevich last year, first-time work zone speeders, including
those caught on camera, will be hit with a fine of $375, with $125 of that
sum going to pay off-duty State Troopers to provide added enforcement in
construction or maintenance zones. Two-time offenders are subject to a
$1,000 fine, including a $250 surcharge to hire Troopers, and the loss of
their license for 90 days.
Starting in July, State Troopers will deploy specially equipped vans that
can take photographs of drivers speeding in IDOT and Tollway construction
and maintenance zones. Tickets will be issued by mail to vehicle owners.
In addition, drivers who hit a worker are subject for up to a $10,000 fine
and 14 years in prison.
"Preventing the accidents and injuries caused by crashes occurring in work
zones is a significant responsibility for the Illinois State Police," said
ISP Director Larry Trent. “We must protect these workers who ultimately make
all of us safer by improving our roadways. Troopers assigned to work zone
details will take a zero tolerance approach when issuing citations to speed
limit violators. The message is clear -- Slow down; we're serious about
workzone safety."
Gov. Blagojevich has set of goal of reducing traffic deaths to fewer than
1,000 a year by 2008. The work zone speeding crackdown is just one of the
ways state transportation and law enforcement are working together to
accomplish that goal.
According to provisional data from 2004, 39 people were killed in work zones
last year, with two of them being workers. In 2003, 44 people were killed in
work zones, with 5 being workers.
“Since the Tollway just launched our $5.3 billion Congestion Relief Plan,
drivers will see more work zones on the Tollway than they have in the past.
We’re doing our part to ensure construction areas are well marked and that
drivers are well informed as they travel through our construction areas,”
said Illinois Tollway Executive Director Jack Hartman. “But impatience,
speeding and driver inattention are the leading factors in work zone
crashes, so we need drivers to slow down and stay alert in work zones for
their safety as well as our workers.”
Under the provisions of the Automated Traffic Control Systems in Highway
Construction or Maintenance Zones Act of 2004, Illinois State Police were
given the authority to use cameras to enforce work zone speed limits in
cases where workers are present. It also requires that signs be posted when
work zone speed limits are being enforced by camera.
Photo enforcement vans will be equipped with cameras designed to record a
clear image of the vehicle and driver, it’s speed, and registration plate.
The registered owner will not be liable if someone else is driving the
vehicle.
Photo speed enforcement will be taking place at various construction zones
around the state, including on the Dan Ryan and Kingery projects and Tollway
projects in the Chicago area as well as various downstate projects.
IDOT and Tollway officials stressed the importance of complying with work
zone speed limits even when workers are not present because of the dangers
posed by features such as narrow lanes, lane jogs, reduced shoulder width,
obstructions and drop-offs.
IDOT and Tollway staffers will be conducting an outreach effort directed at
members of the driving public on Friday, April 1, at highway rest stops and
Tollway oases around the state.
The increased work zone speeding penalties and photo speed enforcement are
just two of the recommendations of the Work Zone Safety Task Force assembled
by Governor Blagojevich in 2003. Other recommendations of the Task Force,
comprised of members from IDOT, Illinois State Police, the Tollway, Federal
Highway Administration, labor and industry representatives include:

RaceRPM.com Launches Race Ready - News from NASCAR and More
By: Jeff Werderman
- RaceRPM.com launched Race Ready - News
from NASCAR and more. It features pre and post race
reports from the world of NASCAR, and it also will
feature stories from the world of dirt track racing.
Monday's version of Race Ready will have weekend
highlights from the past weekend in racing from NASCAR
and the dirt track world. The Friday editions will
take a look at the upcoming racing weekend. Audio
from NASCAR drivers and dirt drivers will be added to
each audio file.
"This is something we've been producing for radio,"
explained Race Ready host Bucky Doren. "We decided to
create a special version for our web site
(RaceRPM.com). The two-minute versions air on Monday
and Fridays on K-98.5 (KOEL-FM / Waterloo, IA)."
RaceRPM.com also produces a special Monday version for
97.7 KCRR (Waterloo, IA). The version that will be
available as a free download off of the site will
cover more information then the two-minute versions
produced for radio.
"We wanted to add more news and interviews to these
segments, but there is only so much room in a
two-minute feature," Doren went onto say. "We felt
that offering a more in depth version would allow us
to cover more racing.
"Another great benefit is that we can share Race Ready
with race fans outside of the radio audience," Doren
admitted. "It will be added to our podcast. We just
added our podcast to iTunes. You can also download
our podcast through MyYahoo, Google, and several
others."
The RaceRPM.com podcast also features driver
interviews, post-race reports, and more. Race fans
can log onto RaceRPM.com to learn more.

Adrian Speedway owner looks to future
Adrian, MO - January 16, 2006
By: Kirk Elliott
Glenn Portzen's message to his racers and fans: "We will be ready for the
2006 season." Adrian Speedway's owner, just one day removed from seeing his
family's home destroyed by fire, is looking forward. "We appreciate the
moral support but we have everything we need," said Portzen. "It's a tough
thing to go through but we'll be fine. I just want everyone to know we're
not going anywhere and we'll be ready to go racing this Spring."
The home, which also served as offices for the track and the family business, burned completely to the ground just before noon Sunday. Cause of the blaze was yet to be determined. "It really doesn't matter what caused it," Portzen reasoned.
Glenn and his wife Colleen were not at home when the fire started and were saddened at the loss of two dogs. The building was a familiar site at Adrian Speedway where drivers signed in before the races and received their pay from Colleen after the show at the window on the northeast corner. Planning was already underway Monday to rebuild. Some important pieces of equipment, including the big road grader used to maintain the track's surface, were also caught up in the fire. "Once I get a grader, I'm back in business," Portzen added.
Indeed, once Glenn Portzen is seen doing what he does best and that is working his proud Adrian Speedway dirt, smiles will come back to everyone who loves this unique race setting.
He hid have one further message to indicate his look toward the future: "We're allowing the Modifieds to run the old IMCA tire along with the new Hoosiers this upcoming season." That's reason enough to make plans for opening night in April. For more information about the 2006 season, log on to adrianspdwy.com.
