Lincoln banquet rescheduled!

The 2007 Lincoln Speedway Awards Banquet has been rescheduled for Saturday January 19th, 2008.

The 2007 Lincoln Speedway Awards & Celebration Banquet will be held on Saturday January 19 at the Tri-Lakes Banquet Hall in Bloomington. The top ten in points in each class will receive 2 free tickets and will be honored for their achievements in the 2007 season. Drinks will be served at 6:00 with dinner at 6:30 and the awards presentation at approximately 7:00. Music and dancing will follow the awards. Tickets are available at the door or can be purchased in advance by calling 217-828-0078. Tickets are $15 (children 10 and under are free). Included in the ticket price is the all you can eat dinner buffet (fish, ham, cheese potatoes and much more) dessert and entertainment. A cash bar is also available. Twenty one late models showed up ready for battle at Lincoln Speedway Saturday night. The first heat went to RJ Gall over Eric Smith, Mike Mullvain and Greg Longfellow. The second heat was a close contest going to the 2007 Lincoln Speedway track champion Matt Taylor over Daren Friedman, Guy Taylor and Lance Alcorn. The third heat went to Scott Bull in a romp over Nick Bauman, Jimmy Dehm, and Ed Barth.

The feature started with polesitter Scott Bull taking the initial lead. About halfway through the feature, after a few cautions, Daren Friedman made the pass for the lead and put a lot of distance between himself and Scott Bull. Matt Taylor would eventually get around Bull for second, with Bull settling for third, followed by Eric Smith and Derek Chandler. The rest of the top ten were Nick Bauman, Mike Mullvain, Ryan Little, RJ Gall and Roger Brickler.

There was a nice field of cars on hand with over 100 cars in the pits. The late model feature was run third on the ticket, and we were in the car on the highway at 9:45.

The sportsman heats went to Gary Turpin over Nick Macklin, and to Wes O'Dell over Rick Thomas. The feature was won by Billy Nail in a very close race over Wes O'Dell, Rick Thomas, Gary Turpin and Rick Roedell. The feature took 20 minutes to run due to a total of seven caution flags.
The modified class had the largest car count of the night, with 27 on hand. The first heat went to eighth place starter Dick Taylor over Brian Lynn and Cory Schwengel. The second heat went to Brandon Roberts in a fun race over Wendell Zulaf, Jr and Tommy Duncan. The third heat went to Jeff Leka over Darcey Wey and Danny O'Dell. The semi feature went to Jeffrey Leka over Jackie Willis. The feature was another yellow filled race, with the caution count up to seven for the twenty lapper. It did not really matter to Jeff Leka, as he led the whole race, under constant pressure from Dick Taylor and Brian Lynn. Lynn finished second. Third would go to tenth row starter Roben Huffman, as Taylor encountered some last lap troubles, and wound up in fourth place, followed by Jeb Friedman, Jeffrey Leka, Tommy Duncan, Darcey Wey and Bobby Pearson.

The street stock feature went to Travis Johnson over Greg Rubenacker, Terry Miller, Chris Tackett, and Nick Vandenbergh.

The hornet feature was won by Matt Turley over Joe Reed, Eric Keymon, Josh Osborne and David Jones

Sheppard outruns Taylor at Lincoln; McDermand takes Big Boy Bash 7’ Trophy

Lincoln, IL – Steve Sheppard Jr. of New Berlin was the man to beat in Late
Model class at the Lincoln Speedway on Saturday, August 18th. The Street
Stocks also highlighted the night with their first ever Big Boy Bash.
 
To kick off the evening a Circles of Hope concert and festivities were held
to raise money for the organization that is helping children of racing
families who have challenging health issues.
 
Twenty four Late Model’s signed in for the night’s competition. Three heat
events were held with starting positions determined by a draw system. The
preliminary event finishes decided the feature race grid.
 
Heat one: Ryan Little (Springfield) and Don Cisco (Oreana) rolled into the
front row over La Salle racer Mike Glynn and Mike Glascock. Other then
Glascock’s ability to move up the pack, the finishes were nearly the same as
their starts.
 
At the finish it was Cisco winning over Little, Glynn, Glascock, Cory
Daughtery – Blue Mound, Keith Piano (Oglesby), Kyle Steffans, and Larry
Elliott (Ellsworth).
 
Heat two: Brandon Sheppard – New Berlin started on the pole next to Matt
Taylor (Springfield), row two held Tim Lance (Brimfield) and Matt Beadles
(Clinton). Three cars were retired by the completion of this heat race.
 
Matt Taylor won with an impressive Jayme Zidar (Greefield, WI) flying from
last into a second place finish over Chris Dick (Deland), Greg Longfellow
(Washington), and Ryan Retter (Normal).
 
Heat three: Shane Tomlin and Matt Moore were on the front spots over Kevin
Paul (Colchester) and Guy Taylor (Springfield).
 
The third heat was definitely the most exciting as contact was common place.
Steve Sheppard Jr. was running wide open in three wheeling style when he and
Matt Murphy did a little more then just rubbing. Murphy’s ride returned to
the pits while Sheppard stayed out and flew from last to first.
 
Sheppard took the win and collected the most passing points to earn the
feature pole. Tomlin finished second ahead of Guy Taylor, Paul, Ed Barth
(Havana), Lance Alcorn (Bloomington) and Moore.
 
The officials canceled the Semi Feature race because four of the eight took
the field and they were transferring four anyway.
 
Sheppard flew from the pole to set the Feature pace leading his twenty
competitors. The field went to caution before one lap was recorded. After
the complete restart they were only able to get in a few laps when the
biggest wreck of their main took place. Four contenders were sacrificed
including Murphy, Cisco, Glascock and Glynn.
 
Once back to green, Sheppard was heavy on the gas while pulling away from
Dick, Matt Taylor, and Zidar. Dick ran second until he pulled out of
competition with about seven laps to go. Now Matt Taylor was positioned
behind the leader and ready for an opening.
 
Lapped traffic kept Sheppard in just the right position til the final turn.
Matt completed the night runner up over Zidar, and Little. Longfellow
finished fifth over a hard charging Lance who moved from seventeenth on the
grid to his sixth place finish. Seventh through thirteenth was Tomlin, Guy
Taylor, Daugherty, Alcorn, Paul, Moore, and Piano. Seven racers did not
finish.
 
A horrific crash during the Modified feature with about eight laps into the
race left most speechless. The #3 of T.D. Burger flipped repeatedly on the
back stretch with parts flying. His tumble ended with an upside down heavily
damaged machine and trip for medical care by ambulance.
 
Dick Taylor (Springfield) started the main event on the pole next to Tim
Hancock (Mt Olive) with Burger and Jeff Leka (Buffalo) in row two.
 
Taylor was quick out of the blocks, as Jeff Leka and Hancock gave chase. The
first ten or so laps were caution ridden but when the green stayed out the
action of three and four wide racing was seen throughout the field.
 
By Lap 12, Jeff Leka was traveling up to Dick Taylor’s door in the turns but
the leader had a good hold on his line and the lead. Four laps later, Taylor
was looking at a comfortable lead when the caution brought everyone back
into single file format.
 
For the restart it was Taylor, Jeff Leka, Cory Schwengel, Hancock and Brian
Lynn (Mason City) for the first five running positions.
 
With two to go, Taylor got off his pace when he drove over the high berm on
the front stretch and lost momentum. A quick thinking Jeff Leka flew into
the lead for the first and final time.
 
Jeff Leka ended in the winners circle over Dick Taylor, Schwengel, Jeffrey
Leka, Lynn who started in seventeenth, Hancock, Mark Tullis (Taylorville),
Bobby Pearson (Forsyth), Roben Huffman (Clinton), Matt Goulden
(Springfield), Randy Myers (Springfield), Justin McCoy (Streator), Abe
Helfand (Clinton), and Eric Mattingly (Atlanta).
 
Jeff Leka, Hancock, and Taylor each won their heats.
 
Twenty Street Stock racers lined up for the twenty lap Big Boy Bash feature
event. As soon as the flagman gave the go, a three wide battle for the lead
took off between pole sitter Dustin Mugler (Minier), Shane Garrison
(Dawson), and Steve Ewing (Decatur).
 
Mugler prevailed as the race leader for the first six laps. Several laps
later, Mugler and Ewing were in an unhappy struggle with Ewing slamming hard
into the turn four concrete wall ending with a flat tire. His desire to stay
on the track ended with a black flag.
 
Fourteen cars remained at Lap 10.
 
Kevin McDermand (Springfield) started fourth on the grid and won the seven
foot trophy over Travis Johnson (Ashland), Troy Dodson, Terry Miller
(Lincoln), Garrison, David Awe (Lincoln), Greg Rubenacker (Clinton), Tyler
Blankenship (St. Elmo), Keith Harre, Dan Winterbauer (Lincoln), Nick
Vandenbergh (Ashland) and Chris Stipp (Gibson City).
 
Gary Turpin (Bloomington) won the Sportsman main over Billy Nail (Decatur),
Greg Kimmons (Pleasant Plains), Rick Roedel (Shelbyville), Nick Macklin
(Argenta), Al Crowder (Elwin), Jeff Graham (Stoninton), Curtis Hobbs (Farmer
City), Andy Clark, and William Becker (Greenview).
 
Twenty four Hornet drivers started their main with seventeen cars finishing.
 
Eric Keymon (Lincoln) won over Matt Turley (Dawson), Josh Osbourne
(Lincoln), Damin Jones (Chestnut), Bo O’Donoghue (Lincoln), Stacy Whitehouse
(LeRoy), Scott Vanoppen (Roanoke), Larry Fletcher (Greenview), Jeff
Rubenacker (Lincoln) and Eric Wisher.

A whopping 59 late models showed up to do battle Sunday evening in the UMP Summernationals series. After a wet two days in central Illinois, the drivers must have just been wanting to race. Ed Kirchoff fired off the first shot in time trials with a new track record of 13.416 seconds. Heat winners were Scott Bull, Don O'Neal, Matt Taylor, Mike Marlar, Terry Casey and Steve Sheppard Jr. Semi features went to Brady Smith, Shannon Babb, and Rodney Melvin.

The feature action was hot and heavy as Don O'Neal took the initial lead from his outside front row starting position. About 10 laps in, Terry Casey slipped by O'Neal for the lead, and held the spot until after the white flag was unfurled. As the pair went into turn three heading for the checkers, O'Neal went to the high side around Casey, drove down in front of him and held on for the win. No caution flags during the feature.

Brian Shirley Thrills Central Illinois Fans With First-Ever World of Outlaws Late Model Series Victory Sunday At Lincoln Speedway

 

LINCOLN, IL – May 13, 2007 – Another local hero turned back the big boys.

 

Brian Shirley of Chatham, Ill., became the second driver in less than a week to win a World of Outlaws Late Model Series event in front of a partisan hometown crowd, capturing Sunday night’s 40-lap tour A-Main at Lincoln Speedway.

 

Shirley, 26, also was the third consecutive first-time winner on the WoO LMS, following ‘Monster Midwest Tour’ victories by Davenport, Iowa’s Brian Harris on May 9 at the Davenport Speedway Quarter-Mile and Dennis Erb Jr. of Carpentersville, Ill., on May 12 at Charter Raceway Park in Beaver Dam, Wis.

 

The victory was worth $7,500 to Shirley, including the $500 ‘World of Outlaws Bonus Bucks’ prize he received for being the top-finishing driver who was not ranked among the top 12 of the WoO LMS point standings nor a previous winner of a tour event.

 

“I couldn’t have picked a better night to win my first World of Outlaws race,” said Shirley, who lives about 45 minutes southwest of the quarter-mile oval. “My Dad, my aunt, my uncle – pretty much all the important people in my life were here tonight. This is just one of those days that touches you.”

 

Driving Ed Petroff’s Petroff Towing/Jayco Construction/J&J Steel Rayburn No. 3s, Shirley started fifth and spent the first half of the race battling for position in the top five. He made his decisive move on a lap-20 restart, using the outside lane to grab the lead from as lap 21 was scored from Erb, who had held the top spot from the initial green flag.

 

With the remainder of the A-Main running caution-free there was no catching Shirley, who crossed the finish line more than a straightaway ahead of Erb’s Petroff Towing/J&J Steel Rayburn.

 

Last year’s WoO LMS Rookie of the Year Eddie Carrier Jr. of Salt Rock, W.Va., recorded a career-best tour finish of third in his Grover Motorsports Rocket, while Chub Frank of Bear Lake, Pa., placed fourth in his Lester Buildings Rocket and three-time WoO LMS champ Billy Moyer of Batesville, Ark., was fifth in his Banner Valley Hauling Rayburn.

 

“When I went to the high side and I felt like it was pretty good up there, I knew we were good enough to win,” said Shirley, whose best career WoO LMS finish prior to Sunday night was third place, on Sept. 17, 2005, at I-55 Raceway in Pevely, Mo. “I just stayed on the top and went forward.”

 

Shirley stopped Erb’s bid to register two WoO LMS triumphs in a row.

 

“It would’ve been nice to get back-to-back wins, but we’ll take a win last night and a second tonight,” said Erb, who started from the pole position. “I actually went soft on tires (the softer compound choice of the UMP Hoosier 20/40 rule that was in effect) because I thought the moisture down on the bottom would last the whole race, but it dried out about halfway through and that worked against us.

 

“I couldn’t run the top, so we had nothing for (Shirley).”

 

The speed of Shirley’s car, which carried a Pro Power engine, didn’t result from any special knowledge he had of Lincoln Speedway. While the track is close to his central Illinois residence, he had only previously competed there one time in his dirt Late Model career.

 

“I ran a UMP (DIRTcar Racing) Summernationals show here in 2005 – that’s it,” said Shirley. “I’m not real familiar with this place.”

 

A former flat-track motorcycle racer now in his fifth year of dirt Late Model action, Shirley was ecstatic about erasing memories of his subpar performance in Saturday night’s WoO LMS show at Charter Raceway Park.

 

“We picked the wrong tires last night and ended up being out to lunch,” said Shirley, who was the upset winner of the 2006 Knoxville (Iowa) Late Models Nationals. “I’m real happy that we came back strong tonight.”

 

Shirley’s initial WoO LMS win came in the 12th tour feature he’s started in his career. Eight of those A-Main appearances have come this season, which has seen the driver known as ‘Squirrel’ become a familiar face in WoO pit areas. He didn’t enter the first three events of 2007, but he’s been on hand for all 10 shows since then.

 

Shirley said he’ll run the final two events of the WoO LMS ‘Monster Midwest Tour’ – on May 16 at Brownstown (Ind.) Speedway and May 18 at I-96 Speedway in Lake Odessa, Mich. – and plans to head east when the tour resumes action on May 31 at Delaware International Speedway and June 2 at Hagerstown (Md.) Speedway.

 

“We’re gonna keep going (with the series) and see how far we get,” said Shirley.

 

Just two caution flags slowed Sunday night’s A-Main, including one for a lap-20 incident involving Shannon Babb of Moweaqua, Ill., a local favorite who entered the program ranked second in the WoO LMS point standings.

 

Babb was battling for a top-five spot at the race’s halfway point when he was forced into a spin on the backstretch. He restarted at the rear of the field but was never a factor again; he ultimately fell one lap down to Shirley and finished 17th.

 

Finishing in positions 6-10 were Chris Madden of Gray Court, S.C.; Steve Francis of Ashland, Ky., who advanced one position to third in the WoO LMS point standings; Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky.; Clint Smith of Senoia, Ga., who extended his points lead to 18 markers over Babb; and Rick Eckert of York, Pa., who fell to fourth in the tour standings.

 

Thirty-two cars entered the Mother’s Day special, which played out before a virtual packed house at the Don Hammer-promoted track.

 

Madden registered his first fast time of the season with a lap of 13.448 seconds in qualifying.

 

Heat winners were Moyer, Shirley, Frank and Erb, while Matt Taylor of Springfield, Ill., and Steve Sheppard Jr. of New Berlin, Ill., topped the B-Mains.

 

Qualifying-race casualties included Shane Clanton of Locust Grove, Ga., who earned a transfer spot in the fourth heat but had to scratch his car (engine woes) and start at the rear of the A-Main field in a backup; Jeep VanWormer of Piconning, Mich., whose second-fastest lap in time trials became a moot point when engine problems sidelined him in his heat; and Brady Smith of Solon Springs, Wis., who retired from the second B-Main with terminal mechanical trouble but started the feature in a backup mount thanks to being the recipient of a WoO LMS points provisional.

 

The five-race, five-state WoO LMS ‘Monster Midwest Tour’ concludes this week with events at Brownstown (Ind.) Speedway on Wed., May 16, and I-96 Speedway in Lake Odessa, Mich., on Fri., May 18.

World of Outlaws Late Model Series Event On Sun., May 13, Will Help Put Lincoln (Ill.) Speedway On Dirt Late Model Map 

LINCOLN, IL – May 7, 2007 – Lincoln Speedway isn’t a racetrack that’s especially well known to the dirt Late Model racing world. 

Not yet, at least. 

Promoter Don Hammer hopes awareness of the quarter-mile oval among the full-fender set takes a giant leap forward on Sun., May 13, when the nationally-renowned World of Outlaws Late Model Series visits to contest a $40,000-plus event. 

“That’s the whole idea of having a World of Outlaws race,” Hammer said when asked why a major touring series has been booked at Lincoln. “We want to get the track on the map for Late Model racing, and an Outlaw show will help do that by bringing in teams and fans that have never been there. 

“If we can get new people in to see the track, hopefully they’ll like it and want to come back.” 

Regarded as more of an open-wheel and Limited Late Model haven in recent years, Lincoln Speedway has shifted to an emphasis on full-blown Late Model racing since Hammer added it to his promotional portfolio in June 2006. Hammer, who also promotes Farmer City (Ill.) Speedway about 35 miles away, has installed Super Late Models as the headline division for Lincoln’s weekly Saturday-night programs this season. 

The WoO LMS’s 40-lap, $7,000-to-win Mother’s Day Special will be the first high-profile dirt Late Model affair at Lincoln since the track hosted the lone UMP DIRTcar Racing Summernationals event in its history, on July 15, 2005. 

Lincoln’s ’05 Summernationals show was won by Shannon Babb of Moweaqua, Ill., who enters the WoO LMS’s five-race, five-state ‘Monster Midwest Tour’ (which runs from May 9-18) tied for the series points lead with Clint Smith of Senoia, Ga. Babb leads all WoO LMS drivers this season with three victories, and at Lincoln he’ll be shooting for his second series win in front of his rabid central Illinois fans in a span of three weeks, following his April 27 triumph at Farmer City. 

Babb, who is arguably the hottest dirt Late Model driver in the country so far this season, will attempt to continue his spectacular spring against a group of WoO LMS travelers who almost to a man have never seen Lincoln Speedway. 

According to Hammer, if WoO LMS teams head to Lincoln Speedway expecting a mirror-image of the Farmer City quarter-mile they recently ran, they’ll find they’re mistaken. 

“The surface is a tacky, fast dirt,” Hammer said of Lincoln. “But it’s a little more of a paper-clip (shape) than Farmer City. It has more straightaway and less banking, and it’s not quite as fast as Farmer City. 

“We put in a new wall in (turns) three and four and some billboards, so that makes (Lincoln) look a little more like Farmer City. But they’re different tracks, that’s for sure.” 

Lincoln Speedway sits on the Logan County Fairgrounds, a well-manicured property that helps make Lincoln “one of the nicest facilities you’ll go to,” said Hammer. 

Joining Babb and Smith on the WoO LMS roster for Lincoln’s action will be standouts such as Rick Eckert of York, Pa., Steve Francis of Ashland, Ky., Josh Richards of Shinnston, W.Va., Chub Frank of Bear Lake, Pa., Shane Clanton of Locust Grove, Ga., Chris Madden of Gray Court, S.C., Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky., Brian Birkhofer of Muscatine, Iowa, Eddie Carrier Jr. of Salt Rock, W.Va., Tim Fuller of Watertown, N.Y., John Blankenship of Williamson, W.Va., and Adam Hensel of Barron, Wis. 

A strong contingent of central Illinois drivers is expected, including Brian Shirley of Chatham, Ill., Ryan Dauber of Tonica, Ill., Lincoln’s opening-night winner Matt Taylor of Springfield, Ill., and Steve Sheppard Jr. of New Bedford, Ill., who won Lincoln’s May 5 feature. 

Other drivers with the race on their schedule include Dennis Erb Jr. of Carpentersville, Ill., Darren Miller of Milledgeville, Ill., Brady Smith of Solon Springs, Wis., Terry Casey of New London, Wis., and Steve Casebolt of Richmond, Ind. 

Lincoln Speedway’s weekly competition is not sanctioned by UMP DIRTcar Racing, but the May 13 program has been designated a UMP special event. The WoO LMS card, which will run under UMP’s Hoosier 20/40 tire rule, will offer UMP points, as will the companion Modified and Sportsman events. 

Pit gates open on Mother’s Day at 3 p.m., with grandstands gates unlocked at 4:30 p.m. Hot laps take to the track at 6 p.m. and qualifying commences at 6:30 p.m. 

Adult general admission for the event is $25, with children ages 6-12 admitted for $10 and kids five-and-under free of charge. Pit passes are $35, with children ages 4-10 charged $15 and kids-and-under free. 

Lincoln Speedway sits in an easily-accessible central Illinois location, about 30 miles northeast of Springfield, 35 miles southwest of Bloomington/Normal and 45 miles southeast of Peoria.

Due to the extremely cold weather, races have been canceled at Lincoln Speedway on Saturday April 7.  Opening night and the $1200 to win Late Model show will be on Saturday April 14.

Lincoln Speedway gears up for 2007 season

     With many changes in place, Lincoln Speedway owners are busy preparing for the 2007 season.  New dirt, new walls and a slightly different track configuration are some of the physical changes at the speedway while an exciting schedule of events is sure to keep fans on the edge of their seats. 
     The season kicks off on Saturday March 31 with an open practice for all classes from 12:00 to 4:00 P.M.  Opening night is scheduled for Saturday April 7 with a $1200 to win Late Model show.  Other classes competing will be Modifieds, Sportsman, Street Stocks and 4 cylinder Wild Things. 
     On Saturday April 21, the O’Reilly POWRi Midgets and Mini Sprints roll into town for some exciting open wheel action.  For Late Model fans, the World of Outlaws Late Models will appear at the Speedway on Sunday May 13 and the UMP Summernationals compete on Sunday June 24. 
     The Lincoln Speedway Kids Club has great things in store for all of the young race fans including shirts, coloring books, autograph sessions and birthday parties.  For the adult fans,  2 fan appreciation nights (admission price is reduced to $5) are scheduled for June 19 and July 21.
