SHRYOCK NABS USMTS SOUTHERN SERIES FINALE AT HOUSTON
RACEWAY PARK
BAYTOWN, Texas (Dec. 1) Kelly Shryock locked up the
USMTS Southern Series title on Friday during the second
night of the inaugural Texas Winter Nationals presented by
Delta Flange Manufacturing & Batterbee Racing. So, with
the pressure off of him, Shryock could simply relax and
just have fun during Saturday's finale.
Whatever.
The eight-time O'Reilly USMTS National Champion started
eighth in his eight-lap heat race but powered to the front
to earn the most passing points among the 65 entrants. By
passing seven cars in his heat race, he surpassed Tommy
Weder Jr. for the season-long Home Pride Passing Points
award and also earned an automatic berth in the first four
rows of the main event.
Shryock drew the sixth starting spot for the 40-lap
feature, but had a tall hill to climb with five tough
competitors starting in front of him. Polesitter Jason
Hughes a three-time USMTS Southern Series winner this
season led the 24-car field to the green flag and set a
torrid pace throughout the first half of the race on a
near-perfect racing surface.
"A bunch of rain here the week before really hurt the
track conditions for Thursday's opener," said USMTS
promoter Todd Staley. "It was really rough on Thursday,
and it kind of rubbered up on Friday, but the track
tonight was awesome probably the best we've seen all
year. Hats off to Larry Rollo and his staff."
On lap 21, Shryock made his move around Hughes and beat
his fellow chassis-building arch rival to the flagstand to
complete the 22nd lap. Behind him, the action was three-
and sometimes four-wide for positions throughout the pack.
Zack VanderBeek slipped past Hughes a few laps later and
Greg Skaggs followed him into third. After making the pass
on VanderBeek, Skaggs set his sights on Shryock.
Skaggs made several attempts to get around Shryock while
VanderBeek, Hughes and Chris Brown diced for the next
three spots. With the white flag in the air, Skaggs fired
one final shot and moved door-to-door with Shryock off of
the final corner. As they crossed beneath the checkered
flags, Shryock nipped Skaggs by a bumper to collect the
$3,000 top prize and his sixth USMTS Southern Series
victory of the season.
VanderBeek held off Hughes for third while Brown settled
for fifth after coming from the 15th starting spot. Weder
was sixth, Randy Timms raced from 24th to seventh, Steve
Holzkamper was eighth, Howard Willis, ninth, and Chris
Henigan rounded out the top-10.
With the win, Shryock expanded the difference between
himself and points runner-up Timms in the final standings.
Although Skaggs came up short in his quest for a third
USMTS Southern Series win, his runner-up finish propelled
him to third in the final rankings and dropped Holzkamper
to fourth. Hughes wound up fifth just two points behind
Holzkamper. Sixth through 10th in the final 2007 USMTS
Southern Series standings are Weder, Scott Green,
VanderBeek Rodney Sanders and Steven Whiteaker Jr.,
respectively.
Saturday's event brought an end to the inaugural season
for the USMTS Southern Series. A schedule for 2008 will be
announced in the near future as USMTS officials are
planning an even bigger and better tour for their
sophomore season.

LONG TOWS SHINE AS MONDUS WINS SECOND NIGHT OF TEXAS
WINTER NATIONALS WHILE SHRYOCK CLINCHES USMTS SOUTHERN
SERIES TITLE
BAYTOWN, Texas (Nov. 30) It was the second night of the
inaugural Texas Winter Nationals Friday as the toughest
Modified pilots in the Lone Star State and throughout the
South converged on the Houston Raceway Park in Baytown,
Texas, but it was the two drivers who ventured the most
miles to get there that basked in the limelight.
In the 35-lap USMTS Southern Series main event, Alan
Mondus made his long tow from Lakeville, Minn., pay off as
he led every lap to capture his career-first USMTS main
event win and the $2,000 that went along with it. The
19-year-old beat polesitter Jamie Burford of Keatchie,
La., through the first turn at the drop of the green flag,
then cruised to victory from there.
Burford held firmly to the second spot for the next 34
laps, but exiting the final turn with the checkered flag
in sight, Burford tagged the tire barrier at the bottom of
the racetrack. Jason Hughes of Westville, Okla., had
followed Burford throughout the race, and had nowhere to
go in the melee as he and Burford skidded to a stop and
wound up finishing 18th and 19th, respectively.
That opened the door for fourth-running Shane Hebert of
Scott, La., who crossed the finish line in the runner-up
position. After the race, however, Hebert's Modified came
up too light at the scales and he was disqualified. That
gave the second-place paycheck to Willy Kraft, who was
looking at a fifth-place finish with one left-hand turn
remaining the feature.
Howard Willis of Dayton, Texas, had the best showing of
the Lone Star State drivers, garnering third after
starting 14th. Chris Henigan of Marshall, Texas, was
fourth while Fertile, Iowa's Kelly Shryock rounded out the
top-5.
With his fifth-place finish, Shryock earned enough points
to clinch the title to become the first USMTS Southern
Series champion. It was a measure of vindication for
Shryock, who also won the first O'Reilly USMTS National
Championship in 1999. The veteran racer and Skyrocket
Chassis builder proceeded to win eight straight O'Reilly
USMTS National Championship titles before relinquishing
his throne for the first time this season.
Thursday's opening night winner, Paul White, finished
sixth after qualifying for the main event by winning the
third Real Racing Wheels B Main. Scott Green started
20th and finished seventh, followed by Bobby Malchus in
eighth, John O. Whittington, ninth, and Morgan Bagley was
10th.
While Shryock has locked up the top spot in the USMTS
Southern Series points heading into Saturday's finale at
Houston Raceway Park, Randy Timms will secure the
runner-up spot when he fires his motor on Saturday. The
battle for third in the rankings is up for grabs, however,
as three drivers enter the last race of the season
separated by a mere 11 points. Steve Holzkamper, who was
sixth coming into Thursday's show, moved up to third on
Friday with 1665 points. Greg Skaggs is fourth with 1659
markers while Hughes dropped two spots to fifth with 1654
points. Sixth through 10th are Tommy Weder Jr. (1648),
Green (1399), Zack VanderBeek (1166), Rodney Sanders
(1152) and Steven Whiteaker Jr. (1097). Burford's
late-race mishap cost him a spot in the top-10, but
nonetheless trails Whiteaker by just 13 points.
The action continues on Saturday with the inaugural Texas
Winter Nationals finale. Gates open at 4 p.m. with hot
laps at 6 and racing at 6:30. The USMTS Southern Series
main event will pay $3,000 to win and $250 to start.
Limited Mods will also be running for $1,000 to win and
$60 to start.
Houston Raceway Park is a state-of-the-art 3/8-mile
high-banked clay oval located east of Houston on I-10 to
Exit 798, then 3.0 miles south on SR 146, then 0.8 mile
southeast on FM 1405, then 1.5 miles northeast on FM 565
in Baytown, Texas. For more information, call the track
office at (281) 383-RACE or visit www.houstonraceway.com
online.
All USMTS rules will apply. American Racer is the Official
Tire of the USMTS, and any driver seeking to receive USMTS
Southern Series points and/or contingency awards must use
the American Racer KK-704 racing tire. The Hoosier G60
tire will also be allowed for this race, but must be
mounted on all four wheels with no grooving allowed.

WHITE SHOWS THE WAY IN USMTS SOUTHERN SERIES TEXAS WINTER
NATIONALS OPENER
BAYTOWN, Texas (Nov. 29) Paul White of Temple, Texas,
scored his career-first USMTS win Thursday as he captured
the main event on opening night for the inaugural USMTS
Southern Series Texas Winter Nationals at the Houston
Raceway Park in Baytown, Texas.
White was impressive from the get-go, winning the sixth
and final heat race by coming from sixth to first in the
eight-lapper to earn a spot in the redraw for the 25-lap
feature race. After starting third in the feature, White
need just six laps to overtake polesitter Chris Henigan
and went on to take the win.
The former USAC Silver Crown Series titleist pocketed
$1,000 for his efforts in his No. 2w KraftKar Modified.
This was the 20th event this season for the USMTS Southern
Series and the ninth in the State of Texas. Of those nine,
eight different drivers have won in the Lone Star State.
Eight-time O'Reilly USMTS National Champ and current USMTS
Southern Series points leader Kelly Shryock of Fertile,
Iowa, was impressive in coming from 10th on the starting
grid to finish second behind White and pad his points lead
going into the final two nights of the Texas Winter
Nationals.
Steve Holzkamper of Gentry, Ark., was the most prolific
passer, however, racing from 19th to 3rd in the main event
while Clyde Dunn Jr. of Sunnyville, Texas, followed suit,
coming from 20th to finish 4th. Chris Brown of Cleveland,
Texas, rounded out the top-5 finishers. Greg Skaggs, Randy
Timms, Bobby Malchus, Henigan and Alan Mondus completed
the top-10 the only remaining drivers to finish the race
on a very rough racetrack.
Heading into Friday's show, Shryock holds a big lead in
the points (1814 to 1677) over Randy Timms, and can clinch
the title by finishing within two positions of Timms
Friday night. Jason Hughes sits third in the standing with
1598 points, with Holzkamper just one point back (1597) in
fourth after leaping two spots in the standings. Skaggs is
close behind in fifth with 1588 points, followed by Tommy
Weder Jr. (1587), Scott Green (1308), Zack VanderBeek
(1101), Rodney Sanders (1098) and Steven Whiteaker Jr.
(1052).
In supporting action Thursday, Paul White's brother,
Keith, captured the Limited Mod main event to pocket the
$500 top prize. David Cobb, Phil Dixon, Ray Allen Kulhanek
and Shane Hebert rounded out the top-5 finishers.
The Texas Winter Nationals continue on Friday and
Saturday. On Friday, gates open at 5 p.m. with hot laps at
7 and racing at 7:30. The USMTS Southern Series main event
will pay $2,000 to win and $200 to start. Limited Mods
will also be running for $700 to win and $50 to start.
Friday is Childhelp Night, and race fans can help play a
direct role in the treatment and prevention of child abuse
by simply attending the races. For every ticket sold in
the grandstands on Friday, a donation of $1 will go to
Childhelp to help carry out their mission of meeting the
physical, emotional, educational and spiritual needs of
abused and neglected children. To make a donation to help
abused children, contact Childhelp at (480) 922-8212 or
visit them online at www.childhelp.org.
On Saturday, gates open at 4 p.m. with hot laps at 6 and
racing at 6:30. The USMTS Southern Series main event will
pay $3,000 to win and $250 to start. Limited Mods will
also be running for $1,000 to win and $60 to start.
Houston Raceway Park is a state-of-the-art 3/8-mile
high-banked clay oval located east of Houston on I-10 to
Exit 798, then 3.0 miles south on SR 146, then 0.8 mile
southeast on FM 1405, then 1.5 miles northeast on FM 565
in Baytown, Texas. For more information, call the track
office at (281) 383-RACE or visit www.houstonraceway.com

Southern Series points and/or contingency awards must use
the American Racer KK-704 racing tire. The Hoosier G60
tire will also be allowed for this race, but must be

USMTS SOUTHERN SERIES TO CLOSE OUT SEASON WITH A BANG AT
HOUSTON RACEWAY PARK
HOUSTON (Nov. 26) They say everything's bigger in Texas,
and this weekend's Texas Winter Nationals should produce
enough evidence to sway any doubters.
The biggest names in Modified racing throughout the South
as well as some of the hottest drivers from the North,
East and West too will converge on the "Big H" for big
bucks and bragging rights this Thursday, Friday and
Saturday, Nov. 29-30 and Dec. 1, as the Houston Raceway
Park hosts the inaugural Texas Winter Nationals for the
USMTS Southern Series.
The tripleheader will serve as the season finale for the
USMTS Southern Series, and will see the crowning of the
first champion during this inaugural season for the wildly
popular mud-slinging touring series. Eight of the 19 USMTS
Southern Series races this season have been staged in the
Lone Star State, with seven different drivers visiting
victory lane.
And while USMTS Southern Series events have proven to be
the premier gathering places for the best of the best
Modified drivers in the South, it will be Fertile, Iowa's
Kelly Shryock who comes into the Texas Winter Nationals
with the points lead and dreams of winning the USMTS
Southern Series title.
On the strength of his series-leading five victories,
Shryock will roll into Houston Raceway Park with a
healthy, but not insurmountable lead in the points over
Randy Timms of Wheatland, Okla. Shryock, who relinquished
the O'Reilly USMTS National Championship crown for the
first time in eight years this season, can clinch the
USMTS Southern Series title by finishing fifth or better
each night -- something he's accomplished in 14 of his 19
starts this season.
Timms leads a trio of fellow Sooner State drivers that
occupy the remaining top-5 spots the points standings.
Jason Hughes of Westville, Okla., has three wins to his
credit (including two of the last three) and sits third,
followed by his teammate Tommy Weder Jr. of Woodward,
Okla. (2 wins), and Greg Skaggs of Bixby, Okla. (1 win).
Steve Holzkamper (1 win), Scott Green, Rodney Sanders,
Zack VanderBeek and Dena Wilson round out the top-10 in
the rankings.
A tough contingent of local aces, however, will pose a
threat to the invading road warriors. Chris Brown of
Cleveland, Texas, is a top runner at HRP and shocked the
traveling stars when he captured the win at his hometown
track of 105 Speedway on April 29. The most recent USMTS
Southern Series checkered flag waved two weeks ago at the
South Texas Speedway in Corpus Christi with Houston's
David Horner garnering the win.
Other Houston Raceway Park regulars expected to contend
for the Texas Winter Nationals crown and cash include
Kevin Battarbee, Kalif Sellier, Kenny Battarbee, Troy
Seidl, Derek Knowles, Brent Nicholas, Andy McClelland,
Jeff Whitehead, Kevin MiGura and Edward Wickham.
THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 29: Gates open at 5 p.m. with hot laps
at 7 and racing at 7:30. The USMTS Southern Series main
event will pay $1,000 to win and $150 to start. Limited
Mods will also be running for $500 to win and $40 to
start.
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 30: Gates open at 5 p.m. with hot laps at
7 and racing at 7:30. The USMTS Southern Series main event
will pay $2,000 to win and $200 to start. Limited Mods

Friday night is designated as Childhelp Night, and race
fans can help play a direct role in the treatment and
prevention of child abuse by simply attending the races.
For every ticket sold in the grandstands on Friday, a
donation of $1 will go to Childhelp to help carry out
their mission of meeting the physical, emotional,
educational and spiritual needs of abused and neglected
children. To make a donation to help abused children,
contact Childhelp at (480) 922-8212 or visit them online
at www.childhelp.org.

Speedway in Corpus Christi, Texas. The race will not be
rescheduled.
The USMTS Southern Series will be back in action in two
weeks at the Houston Raceway Park in Baytown, Texas, for

HORNER HOLDS OFF HOLZKAMPER FOR FIRST USMTS SOUTHERN
SERIES TRIUMPH
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (Nov. 16) Making his 10th start
with the USMTS Southern Series, Houston's David Horner
garnered his first top-10 finish in a big way as he topped
the 40-lap main event Friday on night #2 of the inaugural
South Texas Fall Nationals at the South Texas Speedway in
Corpus Christi.
Polesitter Steve Holzkamper of Gentry, Ark., led the
24-car starting field to the green but it was fellow front
row starter Horner who won the drag race to the first turn
to take the lead. Six caution flags plagued the first
seven laps of the race, but Horner was able to fend off
the challenges of Holzkamper on each restart.
For the next 19 laps, the race stayed green with Horner
and Holzkamper distancing themselves from the field while
USMTS Southern Series points leader Kelly Shryock of
Fertile, Iowa, picked his way through the pack to take
over the third spot from his 23rd starting position.
A caution flag on lap 26, closed the gap and gave Shryock
the break he needed to make a run at the leaders.
Holzkamper took a peek to the inside of Horner while
Shryock returned to the high line he used in his march
through the field. The trio kept the crowd on the edge of
their seats over the final 10 laps as Holzkamper searched
for a way around Horner while Shryock kept the pressure on
Holzkamper.
As the white flag waved, Horner carried a two-car-length
advantage to the first turn, but Holzkamper closed quickly
and looked to the high side in the final turn. As Shryock
looked on from the third spot, Horner and Holzkamper
exited the final turn side by side with Horner edging
Holzkamper by a bumper at the finish line to score his
career-first USMTS victory.
The win was worth $2,000.
Shryock, who had to use a provisional to get into the main
event, passed 20 cars and held off 18th-starting Zack
VanderBeek of New Sharon, Iowa, for third while Steve
Miller of Georgetown, Texas, hung on for a fifth-place
finish.
Greg Skaggs of Bixby, Okla., rebounded from a flat tire on
lap 7 to finish sixth, with 21st-starting Scott Green of
Derby, Kan., seventh; David Grigg of Springdale, Ark.,
eighth; 20th-starting Rodney Sanders of Happy, Texas, in
ninth; and Randy Timms of Wheatland, Okla., placing 10th.
With his third-place finish, Shryock padded his points
lead with just four races to go as he leads Timms (1711 to
1592) going into the Saturday's race at South Texas
Speedway. Jason Hughes, who won Thursday's feature race
but dropped out of Friday's contest and finished 24th,
remains third in the standings with 1544 points, with
Tommy Weder Jr. in fourth with 1532 markers. Fifth through
10th in the standings are Skaggs (1497), Holzkamper
(1490), Green (1256), Sanders (1053), VanderBeek (1041)
and Dena Wilson (1018).
The USMTS Southern Series will be back in action on
Saturday for the final night of the South Texas Speedway
tripleheader. A top prize of $3,000 awaits the winner.
Gates open at 4 p.m. and the first green flag waves at
6:30.

HUGHES CAPTURES SOUTH TEXAS FALL NATIONALS OPENER AT
CORPUS CHRISTI
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (Nov. 15) Jason Hughes of
Westville, Okla., passed teammate Tommy Weder Jr. on lap
21, then pulled away over the final 14 laps for the
victory Thursday night as the USMTS Southern Series
invaded the South Texas Speedway for the first night of
the inaugural South Texas Fall Nationals.
The $1,000 triumph was the second straight USMTS Southern
Series win for Hughes and his third overall, while
Woodward, Okla.'s Weder grabbed the runner-up spot for the
second time in as many races. Rookies Rockin' Sports Bar
National Rookie of the Year Scott Green of Derby, Kan.,
scored his best finish of the season with a third-place
paycheck and gave the stable of Hughes Chassis drivers a
sweep of the podium.
Current points leader Kelly Shryock of Fertile, Iowa,
finished fourth ahead of Corpus Christi fan favorite
Steven Whiteaker Jr., who earned the Olympic Fire
Protection Hard Charger honors by racing to a fifth-place
finish from 16th on the starting grid.
Randy Timms, Chris Brown, Greg Skaggs, Lawrence Mikulencak
and Steve Holzkamper rounded out the top-10 finishers. By
virtue of earning more passing points than Shryock in the
main event, Timms closed the gap by a single point in the
battle for the USMTS Southern Series crown.
Shryock leads Timms by an even 100 points (1620 to 1520)
while Hughes (1494) narrowed the gap between himself and
the leaders with Thursday's win. Weder sits fourth in the
rankings with 1474 markers, followed by Skaggs (1413),
Holzkamper (1395), Green (1164), Rodney "Rocket" Sanders
(968), Jamie Burford (955) and Dena Wilson (952). Just 12
points separate Wilson and the next three spots held by
Whiteaker, Nicholas Littlejohn and Zack VanderBeek.

RL PROMOTIONS TO OPERATE CRESCO, OSKALOOSA AGAIN IN 2008;
TORCH TO BE PASSED ON AT BLOOMFIELD, MEMPHIS
WEBSTER CITY, Iowa (Nov. 5) Officials from RL
Promotions, LLC, have announced that the motorsports
promotions and management company will continue to promote
weekly racing and special events at both the Cresco (Iowa)
Speedway and Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa, in
2008.
As part of today's announcement, however, officials also
stated that RL Promotions has decided not to exercise
their option to remain as promoter of the Bloomfield
(Iowa) Speedway and the Scotland County Speedway in
Memphis, Mo.
We're happy and excited about returning to Cresco and
Oskaloosa in 2008, but at the same time we're sad to say
we won't be back at Bloomfield and Memphis, said RL
Promotions president Todd Staley. It's been a pleasure to
work with the fairboards, fans, sponsors and drivers at
both tracks, but we simply do not have the time or
resources to devote the energy that Bloomfield and Memphis
deserve and need to have successful programs there.
Hopefully by making this announcement early on, both
fairboards can do what is necessary to implement a new
management staff that will help both tracks excel in
2008.
RL Promotions began promoting events at the Scotland
County Speedway in 2004, and took over the reigns at the
Bloomfield Speedway two years later. Between the two
facilities, more than 100 racing events were staged,
including several big events for sprint cars, dirt late
models and the popular O'Reilly USMTS Modifieds.
The USMTS shows at Bloomfield and Memphis were some of
the most exciting races on the schedule, added Staley,
who also heads the O'Reilly USMTS as well as the United
States Racing Association (USRA), which sanctioned weekly
racing at both racetracks. We're hopeful that both tracks
will host future O'Reilly USMTS shows and continue the
USRA Casey's General Stores Weekly Racing Series
tradition, but that is a decision that will ultimately be
made by whomever is in charge at those tracks in 2008.
As for the Cresco Speedway and Southern Iowa Speedway,
weekly racing on Friday and Wednesday nights,
respectively, will continue in 2008 with the USRA Casey's
General Stores Weekly Racing Series, along with several
special events dotting the 2008 calendar. USRA Modifieds,
Stock Cars, B-Mods and Hobby Stocks will again be a part
of the weekly racing action at both facilities.
The Cresco Speedway is a high-banked 4/10-mile clay oval
located 0.2 miles north of SR 9 on SW 7th (at the Howard
County Fairgrounds) in Cresco, Iowa. The Southern Iowa
Speedway is a half-mile semi-banked clay oval located 0.5
mile west of US 63 on SR 92, then four blocks north on N.
I St. (at the Southern Iowa Fairgrounds) in Oskaloosa,
Iowa.

Motorama Speedway is a high-banked 1/4-mile clay oval
located 9.5 miles west of I-10 on US 90 (SSR) between
Beaumont and China, Texas. Event information is available
by calling 409-753-2370 or online at
www.motoramaspeedway.com. For day-of-race information,
call the track hotline at 409-752-7200. The track sits on
approximately 23 acres surrounded by rice fields. Under
the direction of new owner Butch Doyle, the grounds and
buildings have undergone major renovations since the first
of the year, and the wide racing surface provides for
great, four-wide racing.
All USMTS rules will apply. American Racer is the Official

SHRYOCK NOTCHES ANOTHER USMTS SOUTHERN SERIES WIN AT ENID
SPEEDWAY PARK
ENID, Okla. (Oct. 6) Kelly Shryock was back in usual
form Saturday night as he led wire-to-wire in capturing
the main event to wrap up the Inaugural Oklahoma Fall
Nationals for the USMTS Southern Series at the Enid
(Okla.) Speedway Park. The eight-time O'Reilly USMTS
National Champion and current USMTS Southern Series points
leader from Fertile, Iowa, led all 40 laps from the pole
en route to a $3,000 payday.
Shryock also swept both nights of the doubleheader when
the USMTS Southern Series last visited Enid Speedway Park
on March 31 and April 1.
Jason Hughes of Colcord, Okla., raced from 10th on the
starting grid to the second spot early in the race, but
was unable to challenge Shryock for the win and had to
settle for the runner-up finish. Randy Timms of Wheatland,
Okla., grabbed third, while Tim Donlinger of Rochester,
Minn., was fourth and Watertown, S.D.'s Jon Tesch rounded
out the top-5 finishers.
Scott Green, Friday night's winner Tommy Weder Jr., Eddie
Martin, Willy Kraft and Steve Holzkamper completed the
top-10.
With the win, Shryock extended his USMTS Southern Series
points lead over Timms (1259 to 1174) with nine events
remaining on the schedule. Hughes is third in the rankings
with 1124 points, followed by Weder (1080), Greg Skaggs
(1076), Holzkamper (1051), Rodney Sanders (897), Zack
VanderBeek (889), Green (871) and Brandon Morton (775).
Next up for the USMTS Southern Series will be a
tripleheader shootout on Thursday, Friday and Saturday,
Oct. 18-20, at the Motorama Speedway in Beaumont, Texas.

WEDER CAPTURES CAREER-FIRST USMTS WIN AT ENID
ENID, Okla. (Oct. 5) Tommy Weder Jr. led his first lap
in a USMTS main event last month at the Featherlite Fall
Jamboree. It was only one lap and it was his last as
mechanical problems forced him out of the race and into a
last-place finish. Friday night at the Enid (Okla.)
Speedway Park, Weder led five laps this time but they
were the last five as the 22-year-old from nearby
Woodward, Okla., captured his first USMTS-sanctioned
feature race at the Inaugural Oklahoma Fall Nationals for
the USMTS Southern Series.
It looked like Weder would have to settle for the
runner-up paycheck as Terry Phillips of Springfield, Mo.,
blistered the field for the first 25 laps of the 30-lap
Holley "A" Main. And it looked like Phillips had finally
shaken off the bad luck that has plagued him at Enid this
season.
When the USMTS Southern Series last visited the Enid
Speedway Park on March 31 and April 1, Phillips was bad
fast. He garnered the most Home Pride Passing Points in
his heat race both nights and had a prime starting spot
for the main events. Both nights, however, mechanical woes
struck the second-generation speedster as he left Enid
with little to show for his efforts.
On Friday night, Phillips once again was the most prolific
racer among the 45 competitors in five heat races. This
time he drew the pole for the main event and left the
field in his wake. However, with five laps to go the
gremlins reached out to Phillips again, flattening a rear
tire and ending his hopes for redemption.
Riding in the right place at the right time, Weder was the
benefactor of Phillips' misfortunes and held back the
challenges of his teammate and fellow Sooner State
speedster Jason Hughes for the $2,000 victory. The win was
Weder's career-first in USMTS competition, and came in his
111th overall start.
Behind Weder and Hughes, Bixby's Greg Skaggs gave a sweep
of the top-3 positions to the Oklahoma gang. Jeremy Payne
of Springfield, Mo., took the fourth spot and Randy Timms
of Wheatland, Okla., completed the first five across the
finish line.
One of the hottest drivers during the month of September,
Tim Donlinger made the long haul from Rochester, Minn., to
compete in his first USMTS Southern Series event and
finished sixth in the nightcap. Willy Kraft was seventh,
Jon Tesch finished eighth, Steve Holzkamper grabbed ninth
and USMTS Southern Series points leader Kelly Shryock
rounded out the top-10.
Six different chassis manufacturers and six different
States were represented among Friday night's top-10
finishers.
The feature race was a thrilling pass-fest for the fans as
three of the top-5 finishers came from deep in the field
on the starting grid. Timms, who started 16th and earned
the Olympic Fire Protection Hard Charger honors, narrowed
the gap between himself and Shryock in the points
standings with 10 events left on the USMTS Southern Series
calendar.
Behind Shryock (1156 points) and Timms (1078), the rest of
the top-10 after the first night of the doubleheader at
Enid are Hughes (1021), Skaggs (1010), Weder (1002),
Holzkamper (969), Zack VanderBeek (889), Rodney Sanders
(839), Scott Green (790) and Jamie Burford (745).
Saturday (Oct. 6) will see the USMTS Southern Series back
in action for the second round of the doubleheader at the
Enid Speedway Park. Saturday's main event winner will
pocket $3,000. Gates open at 3 p.m., hot laps are at 5:30
and racing starts at 7 both days.
The Enid Speedway Park is located 2.5 miles north of U.S.
Hwy. 412 on U.S. hwy. 81, then 0.5 mile east on W. Oxford
(at the Garfield County Fairgrounds). Race day information
is available by calling the track hotline at (580)
234-4488 or online at www.enidspeedwayparkllc.com.

OREILLY USMTS CONGRATULATES CLINT BOWYER!
LOUDON, N.H. (Sept. 17) The staff of the OReilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series congratulates Clint Bowyer on his career-first NASCAR Nextel Cup Series victory. Bowyer, a former dirt modified driver who competed twice with the OReilly USMTS Modifieds this season, won his first NASCAR Nextel Cup Series race Sunday before a standing-room only crowd at the New Hampshire International Speedway in Loudon, N.H.
Starting from the pole position, the Emporia, Kan., native dominated the race, leading 222 of the 300 laps in his Jack Daniels-sponsored No. 07 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, and moved up eight spots to fourth in the Chase for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup standings.
Driving a car out of Kelly Shryocks Skyrocket Chassis stable and owned by fellow Kansan Tim Karrick, Bowyer finished 10th with the OReilly USMTS at the Adams County Speedway in Corning, Iowa, on June 5, then grabbed a 22nd-place finish at the Cresco (Iowa) Speedway on July 31 in a race that also featured fellow NASCAR drivers Ken Schrader and Kenny Wallace.

TESCH TAKES DOWN $4K AT DEER CREEK; OREILLY USMTS CROWN IS KROHNS TO LOSE
SPRING VALLEY, Minn. (Sept. 7) Jon Tesch picked up the biggest win of his career Friday night as he topped the 40-lap OReilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series main event on the second night of the 9th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree at the Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn.
The win, worth $4,000 to 31-year-old from Watertown, S.D., was his fourth of the season against the rugged OReilly USMTS road warriors, but his first ever at the 1/3-mile high-banked oval in the rural hills of Southern Minnesota. Coupled with his runner-up finish Thursday night, Tesch has stashed away $5,500 for his efforts so far, with a $6,000 top prize awaiting the drivers in Saturday nights finale.
As it did last night and throughout The Hunt for the OReilly USMTS National Championship, the cream rose to the top in the Holley A Main with three of the four top points earners garnering the top three finishing spots. On Friday night, points leader Jason Krohn captured his career-first win at Deer Creek with Tesch taking second and Jason Hughes finishing third. Saturdays feature saw Hughes take the runner-up spot with Krohn in third.
Johnny Bone Jr. crossed the finish line second Saturday night, but his Modified weighed in too light at the post-race inspection and he was disqualified. Bones DQ moved Tim Donlinger up to fourth on the score sheets while Zack VanderBeek scored a fifth-place paycheck. Sixth through 10th went to Al Hejna, Jim Horejsi, Todd Scharkey, Ryan Gustin and Steve Holzkamper.
From the pole position, Tesch grabbed the initial lead Saturday night but relinquished the top spot to Kelly Shryock on lap 4. Shryock paced the action through lap 20 before the races first caution slowed the show. On the restart, Shryock turned the lead back over to Tesch while several drivers jockeyed for position among the top-10. Another yellow flag waved one lap later, and Shryock found himself all the way back in fifth for the next restart.
Caution again waved quickly after the next restart for a spin in turn 4. As the cars circled the racing surface under caution, the reason for Shryocks sudden drop became apparent as he pulled his No. 3 Skyrocket to the infield with a flat right rear tire. Shryock rejoined the field at the rear of the pack, but the eight-time defending OReilly USMTS national champ took just eight laps to pass 12 cars and work his way back into contention.
With Tesch setting a torrid pace at the front of the pack, another caution flag waved with 33 laps down and seven to go. Shryock had worked back up to eighth place, but this yellow flag was for him as he found himself sitting the wrong way in turn 2 after contact with a slowing Tommy Weder Jr. While Weder limped his machine to the pits, Shryock had to tag the rear of the field again, eventually climbing back to a 17th-place finish at the end.
What looked so promising in the beginning of the race turned sour for Shryock. Not only did a possible victory go out the window, but his title reign is in serious jeopardy with just one race remaining with an almost insurmountable deficit to Krohn.
Krohn leads Hughes by 30 points (1333 to 1303) going into Saturdays finale, with Shryock 71 points back of Krohn in third. If Krohn simply qualifies for Saturdays main event, Shryock will need to not only win the race, but also pass at least 18 cars in order to earn enough points to overtake Krohn. While Hughes does not have quite as steep a mountain to climb, Krohn can virtually lock up the 2007 OReilly USMTS National Championship with a top-5 finish on Saturday night.
Tesch is a solid fourth in the rankings with 1190 points, followed by Tommy Myer (1122), VanderBeek (1084), Weder (1058), Greg Skaggs (1031), Holzkamper (898) and Scott Green (868).
Saturdays explosive finale will feature the hottest Modified pilots in the nation battling for a spot in the 9th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree main event for the OReilly USMTS Modifieds. A field of 30 cars will start the main event three-wide and 10 rows deep as drivers battle for a $6,000 top prize. All drivers that make the big dance will earn at least $600. And if that wasnt enough, non-qualifiers will have a chance at one of the 24 spots in the Non-Qualifier A Main, which carries a $2,000 top prize and pays $200 to start. In addition, WISSOTA Midwest Mods will duel for $500 to win and $50 to start their main event.
This years Featherlite Fall Jamboree will be the final National Event for OReilly USMTS and will award points in The Hunt for the OReilly USMTS National Championship. Not only will we produce a ninth Featherlite Fall Jamboree winner, but we will also crown the ninth OReilly USMTS national champion after Saturday nights finale.
The Featherlite Fall Jamboree is made possible by the great racers and fans, as well as our event sponsors: Featherlite, Mikes Hard Lemonade, 61 Marine and Sport, Dirt Doctor Trucking and Haulmark Motorcoaches.
