OAKWOOD — It seemed like the only person not worried about Randy Shuman’s motorcycle jump Sunday at Vermilion County Speedway was Shuman himself.
The Oakwood veteran was able to easily jump over eight cars twice during intermission at the infield of the track and was also able to win his third straight UMP sportsman feature later in the evening.
Shuman used a motocross bike for the jump, which was a return to his early days in racing.
“It was the first time I have been on a bike in three years,” Shuman said. “But it is like second nature for me because I have always loved doing motocross.
“The only real problem was the lighting on the ramp, but I was able to get through it.”
Shuman plans to jump again next week and says he will try to jump even more cars.
“I had so much fun and I hope more people can come out to the track to see it,” Shuman said. “I have to thank Cowtown Kawasaki, Blake Capello for the bike, Tim Shultz, Jeff Grubb and my sons Brayton and Blaise because I seem to have good luck where they are around.”
In the sportsman race, Shuman had the hold off Rick Hufford, who tried at various points in the race to pass him.
“I knew he would be coming for me, so I had to race a smooth race,” Shuman said. “I’m just happy to be in one piece after everything.”
After Shuman and Hufford, Troy Overstreet took third, Butch Meeker finished fourth and Joel Funk was fifth.
After a few weeks away from VCS, UMP modified points leader McKay Wenger found his way back to the track and was able to win the class feature.
“We have been away for a while and we saw the standings online and saw that it was going down,” Wenger said. “So we had to come back because we would like to win the title here.”
To win, Wenger got past Catlin veteran Roger Cary, who was trying to win his third race in four weeks, near the midway point of the race.
“The car got so tight that I had to throw it just to get it to turn,” Cary said. “But after he took the lead, I tried to get it back and I gave it a heck of a run.”
“We were able to keep our car loose because we thought we can get through the ruts easier and it worked,” Wenger said. “We hoped that there were some crumbs for us on the top of the track and we were able to get past him.”
After Wenger and Cary, Don Kiger was third, Mike Spatola took fourth and Rob Fuqua was fifth.
In the pure stock class, Jack Dowers continued to put pressure on leader Gordon Parsons, Jr. by winning the feature and once again luck was on his side.
Dowers was third early on in the race when Parsons, Jr. spun leader Wes Parson, setting up a caution flag. Because of that Parsons, Jr. was sent to the back of the field and Dowers was able to get past Parson when action resumed.
After Dowers and Parson, Jason Turner was third, Parsons, Jr. sprinted through the field to salvage fourth place and Tim Miller was fifth.
In the street stock class, Steve Maisel was able to win for the first time at VCS. Maisel is a 20-year veteran from Missouri and with no home track, he travels around the Midwest.
“This was my 213th career win,” Maisel said. “This track has some of the best racers around including the guy (Jerrad Krick) who has won the national points title for the past two years, so you can only be the best by racing against the best. … But I also go out to try to have fun as well.”
Jonah Buyno was second, Lee J. Hall placed third, Krick took fourth and Neil Rollins was fifth
In the hornets, David Reed was able to carry the family banner by winning his sixth feature at VCS and keeping in pace with brother, Joe, who was not at the track on Sunday.
Chris Newell was second, Dustin Cadle took third and Mike Pollitt was fourth.
In the quads races, Aron Buttram won for the second straight week in the 450 class.
Along with Shuman jumping next week, the UMP modified, UMP sportsman, street stock, pure stock, hornets and quads classes will race. The action will start with hot laps at 7 p.m.
Also, VCS will have a concert on Aug. 15 featuring the bands My 3 Sons & Mickey and 90 Proof. There will also be a dunk tank where any race fan can try to dunk a racer or VCS staff. There will also be mechanics races and open practices during the event, which will start at 5 p.m.

VCS on July 27

OAKWOOD — In the midst of a speedy track at Vermilion County Speedway, Roger Cary was trying to look for that one spot that could give him the win.

Once he found the spot at the top of the track, Cary was able to hang on for his second UMP modified win at the track in the last three weeks.

“I wanted to start on the bottom, but then I was losing ground to Josh (Ferguson),” Cary said. “I went to the top to find a cushion and I was able to find that cushion and ride all the way.

“Once I get into my rhythm, it is hard to stop me.”

Cary also thanked his sponsors Wright Motor cars, Ray Abbott Trucking, Rivers Racing, Corner Lounge, Mullins Engines and Bob Pierce Race Cars for the support.

“Without the sponsors, I would not be racing,” Cary said. “I would just be another guy just sitting in the stands.”

Ferguson was second, Jamey Henson was third, Chad Evans took fourth and Don Kiger ended up fifth.

In the UMP sportsman class, Randy Shuman won his second straight race ad he continued to get acquainted with his old car.

“It was the same car I used when I was racing in the class ad I have to thank Mark and Josh Garrell for letting me use it,” Shuman said. “I think it is the oldest car in the class.”

Along with the win, Shuman was also gearing up for next Sunday, when he will attempt a motorcycle jump over six cars. If he can do that, he will try 10 cars the week after that.

“It is something to get more people to the track,” Shuman said. “(VCS promoter) Phil (Richardson) has stuck his neck out for the drivers and I thought that someone should do the same for him.

“I have driving in motocross for years and I think I can make the jump. I just hope it can get us a good turnout of people because I don’t think something like this has been done here in years.”

Rick Hufford was second, Scott Buchanan finished third, Jay Schuleter took fourth and Troy Overstreet ended up fifth.

In the pure stock class, Jack Dowers returned to the winners circle after VCS points leader Gordon Parsons, Jr. had won the last couple of weeks.

In the final lap of the feature, Parsons spun out and dropped from second to eighth

“We finally got some things worked out with the car and I think things are going to get better,” Dowers said. “I might not gain much on him though because I was knocked out of last week’s race.”

Wes Parson was second, Tim Miller ended up third, Scott Miller was fourth and Jason Turner finished fifth.

Jerrad Krick also won after a short drought, holding off his brother-in-law Lee J. Hall in the street stock feature.

“Lee J. is just getting more used to his new car now,” Krick said. “I knew it would be a matter of time before he figured it out, so it will be tough for now on.”

After Krick and Hall, last week’s winner, Jesse Simmons, was third, Chuck McNeese ended up fourth and Robert Turner took fifth.

In the hornets feature, David Reed was able to pick up the win in his new car.

“I have to thank my brother (Joe Reed) and Tim Sanders for the help with this car,” David Reed said. “This was also a great track tonight.”

While David is behind Joe in the standings at VCS, it is a little different at Farmer City Raceway.

“We have been back and forth, but I have the lead there,” David Reed said. “Last year, I started from nothing last in the season and was able to win three or four races and now this year, I am second to my brother in national points.”

Chris Newell was able to take second, Joe Reed was third, Dustin Cadle, who was driving the car of last week’s winner Mike Pollitt, was fourth and Mike Cadle was fifth.

In the quad races, Aaron Buttram won in the 450 cc class while Brad Knauer won the 400 cc class.

Along with Shuman’s jump next week, VCS will also have quad wheelie shows and bicycle and power wheel races.

Also, the UMP modified, UMP sportsman, street stock, pure stock, hornet and quad classes will have its regular races as well. Action starts at 7 p.m.

VCS June 30

BY MARVIN HOLMAN

OAKWOOD — After weeks of some close shaves, rain finally hit at Vermilion County Speedway, but after the rains left, the racing returned and for some, it was business as usual.
After failing to win last week, McKay Wenger returned to the winner’s circle in the UMP modified class and unlike some of his victories this season, he took the lead early on and was able to hang on for the win.
“I was leading the race last night at Fairbury and someone passed me on the final lap,” Wenger said. “So I didn’t want that to happen. … My whole team was telling me at times some one was behind, but I didn’t see anyone.”
Rob Fuqua ended up second in the feature, Tim Reynolds ended up third, Ryan Cary was fourth and Don Kiger took fifth.
The night was also filled with repeat winners who built on to their points leads in their classes or is getting close to a points lead.
The one racer still behind was Jack Dowers in the pure stock class. The two-time defending champion won his fourth race in the last five weeks as well and inched closer to leader Gordon Parsons, Jr.
In second place was Hume’s Tim Miller, who had the best finish of his career.
“It was great to get that close and to race against a man who has raced for over 30 years,” Miller said. ‘After the race, I just had to go up and shake his hand.”
“He was doing pretty well,” Dowers said. “I didn’t want to give up that easily. … It was a good race.”
After Dowers and Miller, Brian McQueen was third, Parsons, Jr. was fourth while his father, Gordon Parsons, Jr., took fifth.
Jerrad Krick continued to dominate in street stock, winning his sixth race of the season and fourth in a row.
“I didn’t think I was going to win,” Krick said. “(Jay Morris) was doing good and I tried to pass him on the bottom, but I could not do it. So I went up to the top and I got past him.
“It was a pretty good turnout tonight and we just hope that continues.”
Dustin Kohler was third after Krick and Hall, Nathan Alexander was fourth and Jesse Simmons finished fifth.
Joe Reed also bolstered his lead in the hornet class with a win in the feature, continuing the goal he and his brother, David, had set before the season.
“We are trying to finish 1-2 in the UMP points race,” Reed said. “It doesn’t matter who wins, as long as we are one and two.”
Mike Pollitt was second, Dustin Cadle finished third, Trisha Hafner was fourth in her first race of the season and Mike Cadle was fifth.
Rick Hufford won his second race of the season at UMP sportsman, but after the race, he sprinted home to get ready for work this morning.
Ed Lahey was second; Dave Rudisill took third, Troy Overstreet was fourth and Scott Hufford finished fifth.
Sunday’s scheduled run for the KidsModz class was canceled when only three cars showed up. But the quad racers were able to come in and replace the class with Covington’s Brandon Elliott won in the 450 cc feature.

Victory Lane....Jeep VanWormer

VCS summernationals June 22

BY MARVIN HOLMAN

OAKWOOD — With a little bit of quick thinking, Jeep Van Wormer was able to get back into the swing of things at the UMP Summernationals.
Van Wormer kept the lead for most of the late model feature at Vermilion County Speedway and was able to turn away Brian Shirley.
After building a strong lead, Van Wormer saw Shirley creep closer and closer on the bottom of the track and decided to make the move down from the top of the track to keep the lead.
“I saw him and I knew I had to go and stop him,” Van Wormer said. “We also had problems trying to get past people in traffic, but we got through it.”
“We came in a lap late,” Shirley said. “I was hoping that he would not catch on, but he did. When I went to the bottom, it reminded me of my first race here.”
It was the first win for the Pinconning, Mich. racer at VCS, where he has been close to victory many times.
“We always found a way to win some heats and do well in the feature, but we could never win one,” Van Wormer said. “But our car is starting to run pretty well and I have to thank my crew for that and I have to thank my wife and my family for their support.”
As for the series, Van Wormer said that hopefully it will be the start of some good luck for him.
“We had a mediocre start, but we have come back,” Van Wormer said. “We know it is a long way to go for this series and I don’t want to wish anyone bad luck, but we hope some of the leaders have some now.”
After Van Wormer and Shirley, Summernationals rookie Will Vaught was third, Dennis Erb Jr., was fourth and Scott Bull, who led the race early on, ended up fifth.
Another first time VCS winner was James Buyno in the pure stock class.
Buyno, brother of street stock racer Jonah and brother-in-law to street stock racers Lee J. Hall and Jerrad Krick, was happy to get his first win in front of his family.
“I just wanted to win one with all of them here at the track,” Buyno said. “The only thing that sucks was my wife was not there because she was taking care of our son …. I own everything to my family, friends and my sponsors.”
The win was also a redeeming one for the Westville racer, who had a tough time starting the season.
“We ordered an engine and we waited for a long time before they finally sent it to us,” James Buyno said. “Jonah ended up building the engine.”
John Hamer took second, Jack Dowers, who had won the last three races, took third, VCS points leader Gordon Parsons, Jr., was fourth and Tim Miller finished fifth.
In the UMP modified, Josh Ferguson won his first race in about a year by holding on to defeat Denny Schwartz.
“I did see him come up a few times,” Ferguson said. “But if I had to fight someone for a lead, it would be him.”
Mike Spatola was third, Ryan Cary took fourth and Gary Cook, Jr. ended up fifth.
Hall won his second feature in the street stock class, holding off the duo of Krick and Neil Rollins for the last few laps.
“Jerrad was coming off the outside and I thought I had room going forward, but then I saw Neil coming up on the other side,” Hall said. “So I stuck to the bottom.”
For Hall, it has been just a matter of time after getting situated to his new car.
“I had to change some things so it could fit me more,” Hall said. “I have to thank my wife and family for their support and SMS motorsports and Jim Ransom for the help.”
Krick ended up second, Jeff Houchens was third, Ben Maxson ended up fourth and Rollins settled for fifth.
Derrick Hufford returned to the winners circle at UMP sportsman after a few weeks. Hufford ended a weekend where his grandfather, Rick Hufford, put in an anew engine.
“He put in the new engine and we didn’t know what it would do, but it worked out very well,” Derrick Hufford said. “He also changed the tires before the feature.”
With VCS rumored to close early for the season in the next couple of weeks, Hufford hopes it does not happen.
“I love running up here,” Hufford said. “I just hope there is a way for the season to continue because I do like it here.”
Jim Bailey ended up second, Joel Funk was third, Jared Leuck was fourth and Jim Moore finished fifth.
Joe Reed continued his good fortune at the hornets class and once again beat out his brother, David, for the feature win.
“That is something we try to do and that is get the sweep,” Reed said. “Last night, my brother won a race at Macon and then I won tonight so it was another sweep of the weekend and that is the goal each week.
“I have to thank the guys at the track for working on the track. They have done a good job of keeping the car racy.”
Mike Pollitt, who won last week, was third this week, followed by Justin Cadle in fourth and Mike Cadle in fifth.
Go-Kart action returns on Friday to VCS and on Sunday, the UMP modfieds, UMP sportsman, street stocks, pure stocks and hornets classes will return.

June 15, 2008 Father's Day
Father's Day at Danville they let Fathers vs Sons on the race track
They did a few laps and then I had them come in to victory lane to get a picture taken of
both of them but the pair in the hornets the son won and the father went to the pits so I didn't get both of them in victory lane
It really put on a great show for the fans

VCS results June 8, 2008
OAKWOOD — McKay Wenger said before this season, Vermilion County Speedway was the toughest track he has raced at in his career.
After his second straight UMP modified win and third of the season at VCS, he has changed that stance very slightly.
The Fairbury racer was able to rally on the final lap to edge out Rob Fuqua on Sunday.
“I have no idea how I did it,” Wenger said. “I just stuck it on the last lap. Rob is a great racer and I knew it would be a great race.”
For Fuqua, who led the entire race until the end, it was just one mistake that cost him.
“I was spending most of the time not making that cost me and I end up having one,” Fuqua said. “On turn 1 and 2, I had to slow things down to get past them and I think that it gave the win by a nose.”
After Wenger and Fuqua, defending VCS champ Randy Shuman was third, Don Kiger was fourth and Jamey Henson finished fifth.
Danville veteran Rick Hufford got the first win of his final season of racing in the UMP sportsman class. Hufford said after this season, he will step aside to help his son, Scott and grandson, Derrick.
“I set a guideline that when I start getting social security, I would retire,” Rick Hufford said. “My first check should be in by December, so this will be it.
“They (Scott and Derrick) will need my help and I am ready to be just an owner and not a driver.”
Ed Lahey was second in the race with Scott Hufford taking third, Derrick Hufford winning fourth and Troy Overstreet getting fifth.
Another Danville veteran, Jack Dowers, also overcame the track and was able to get his second straight win at pure stock.
“That track is something else. … (VCS promoter Phil Richardson) really tried hard to fix the track,” Dowers said. “It wasn’t that bad, but it wore me out because I tried to avoid the holes in the turn.”
James Buyno was second in his first race of the season, Tim Miller took third, Frank Parson was fourth and current VCS points leader Gordon Parsons, Jr. was fifth.
Jerrad Krick also struggled with the track, spinning out two times in the street stock and once in the feature, but he rebounded to get the win to bolster his points lead.
“This was an example of me just being determined to win the race,” Krick said. “But I have a long week of work ahead to get the car set.”
Krick was able to hold off Neil Rollins, who took second, Lee J. Hall was third, Chuck McNeese was fourth and Mike Hope was fifth.
After his brother, David, left the feature race, Joe Reed was able to get the hornet feature win.
“I had to get some revenge because he won in Lincoln on Saturday,” Joe Reed said. “I had to replace a fuel filter and the car came alive tonight.”
Chuck Martin, Jr. was second in the race, Mike Pollitt took third, Kevin Grant finished fourth and Dustin Cadle ended up fifth.

Thanks to Marvin Holman for the story/results below

On Sunday's races at Vermilion County Speedway, McKay Wenger was able to get his second UMP modified win of the season at the track after not winning at all at his career before this season.
Wenger was able to outmaneuver a track that took out 11 of the 22 cars that started the feature, including stars like defending UMP national champion Denny Schwartz and Rob Fuqua, and had to hold on after the many cautions in the race.

“I was sweating out all of those cautions, but I got through it,” Wenger said. “You had to get out and find that groove again and if you don’t watch out, you would get knocked out. .. It was hard to keep it together, but I did.

“I’m starting to get the hang of things here and with this new car.”

Former four-time street stock champion Lee J. Hall won his first race of the season with hsi new car, which was used from last year's champion, Jim Ransom, who has gone on to racing modifieds.

“I have been struggling to get everything adjusted to the way I drive,” Hall said. “Throughout this whole thing, I realized that Jim drove a different kind of style than I do. But I have to thank Jim and SMS motorsports for the car.”

Two-time defending pure stock champ Jack Dowers, who also had a new car, was able to get his first win of the season, edging out Brian McQueen.

“I’m finally starting to get things together with the car finally, so maybe my bad luck is changing,” Dowers said. The track was pretty good to me tonight.”

Troy Overstreet won his second race at VCS in the UMP sportsman class, but gave th assist to his crew because of his work as a truck driver.

“With my new job, I would not have time to get the car ready,” Overstreet, who is a truck driver, said. “I have to drive all night at times and it is tough to work on the car, so they do.”

In the hornets, Joe Reed was able to outlast his brother David in the feature.

“This year, we have a goal to win all of the races and we don’t car who wins,” Joe Reed said. “We would like to finish the season Nos. 1 and 2 in national points."

For the second time this season, the kids modz hit VCS and Joseph Hughs, who was second to Bobby Pierce in the first race at VCS, was able to get the victory.

“I went out and I finally got a hold of the track,” Hughs said. “We have just been changing the set-up from the last time I was here.”

On Friday, Go-Kart action will take place at the speedway with UMP modified, UMP sportsman, pure stock street stock and hornets races once again on Sunday. Racing will start at 7 p.m.

The Kids Modz class will return on June 29.
