Battles were won and wars lost on Saturday night at the Peoria Speedway.
Saturday night’s races marked the 61st season-points championships.
Season championships were handed out in all five divisions, but only one of the five — Sportsman champion Jason Weyeneth — managed to win his feature as well.
In the Late Model division, Steve Lance Jr. broke away from the pack early and held on for another win over his brother, Tim.
"Toward the end, I wasn’t running as hard as I could on the high side," Steve Lance said. "But then I could sense somebody down low and figured it was him, so I figured I better start pushing."
But Lance’s victory wasn’t enough to overtake Todd Bennett, who brought home his first season championship in nine years after winning five straight from 1995-99.
"We just had a lot better luck this year," Bennett said. "After winning so many in a row, you kind of take it for granted."
In the Modified division, points runner-up Mark Johnson bested season champion Dale Munson in the feature.
"Dale’s a good, clean racer," Johnson said. "It was a heck of a run tonight.
"My congrats to Dale on the points title."
Weyeneth, on the other hand, scooped an extra $100 for winning the Sportsman feature. He led from start to finish.
"A race like that, you just have to hit your marks," Weyeneth said. "Because you have no idea what’s going on behind you."
Bryon Ray took advantage of several key cautions to win the Street Stock feature, but runner-up Scott Schoenner finished as the points champion. Schoenner twice took the lead from Ray in the feature only to see the caution flag come out and the lap not count.
"This is what it’s all about," said Johnson, holding up his large trophy topped by a golden car. "It’s all about the trophies, not the money."
Finally, in the Hornet division, Jeremy Kingsley won, but it wasn’t enough to vault him past Scott VanOppen and Zac Kuhel for the title.

PEORIA —
The high side came through for Steve Lance Jr. and Mark Johnson
again on Saturday night at Peoria Speedway. Lance used the high side
and a mistake by his brother, Tim, to win his fourth consecutive
Late Model feature. Johnson, meanwhile, swooped from fourth to first
to win his second consecutive Modified feature. In the Late Model
feature, Tim Lance quickly overtook Steve Lance, who started on the
pole, and the two pulled away from the rest of the field. "I wasn't
going to catch him without a mistake or lapped traffic, " Steve
Lance said. That mistake came near the halfway point, when Tim Lance
jumped the cushion in turns three and four, costing him all his
momentum. "I saw that and thought there's my opening," Steve Lance
said. "I felt kind of bad passing my brother, but I'm pretty sure he
would do the same to me. "The high side has been very good to us
recently. It's a momentum deal."
Johnson and Erik Bruce, meanwhile, took advantage of a pitched
battle for the lead between Casey Lapin and Billy Tuckwell to slide
almost unnoticed around the pair near the midway point of the
Modified feature. Bruce briefly held the lead before bowing out with
mechanical problems. "We were decent down low, but there were other
cars that were better," Johnson said. "But up high, I knew we had a
chance. "When I saw those guys dive for the bottom, I knew I had an
opening."
Jason Weyeneth overcame an accident in his Sportsman heat race to
win the feature. He started the feature on the pole and led
wire-to-wire. "I wasn't sure we would have the car ready," Weyeneth
said. "We lost the radiator and had a lot of body damage, but the
car was awesome. "This was the best that this car has been all
year."
Street Stock winner Scott Schoenner and Hornet winner Jonathan
Schuck Sr. each dedicated their wins to their fathers, Frank
Schoenner and Frank Schuck Sr. Both men were hospitalized and unable
to make it.
It was Schoenner's second consecutive feature victory and Schuck's
first victory in more than two years at the Speedway.

PEORIA —
Hardware was up for grabs Saturday night at Peoria Speedway's mid-season championships. Points leaders in three of five divisions took home trophies. Steve Lance Jr. edged Todd Bennett by about a car length to win the Late Model feature. Lance routinely scraped the right rear of his car against the outside retaining wall in driving high through the corners. "I was trying to get all I could," the Cuba resident said. "The bottom was good too because Todd stayed right there." After starting in the second row, Lance took the lead on Lap 16 when points leader Bennett — who started on the pole — had difficulty getting around a lapped car. A similar situation almost cost Lance exiting the fourth turn on the 30th and final lap. Dale Munson of Fairview started on the pole and led all 20 laps to win in Modified. It was the third feature win of the season for the 51-year-old Munson, who withstood five cautions and the second-place car of Mark Johnson. "It always takes a while to get your rhythm back after a caution," Munson said. Jack Siegel took the lead on the first lap and breezed to victory in Sportsman. It was the second consecutive and fourth feature win of the season for the West Peoria resident. "The car was awesome tonight," Siegel said. Scott Schoener of Flanagan won the Street Stock feature. He held off second-place Bryon Ray on six restarts in 12 laps. "I was way ready for that to be over," Schoener said. Zac Kuhel of Morton won his sixth feature of the season in the Hornet division. "I wanted that big trophy," Kuhel said. SPEEDWAY DIRT: Fans, drivers and track employees combined to donate over $2500.00 to the family of Kevin Lyles, the Beardstown resident who was killed last week in a racing accident at Macomb Speedway. Lyles, 35, left behind a wife and four children. Peoria Speedway official scorer Cyndi Shannon and announcer Scott Shults said they plan to personally deliver a check to Beardstown on Thursday. Speedway owner Sherrie Hamilton said the track would accept donations on behalf of the Lyles through Wednesday. ... Brad Willis Jr. drove over the wall in Turns 3 and 4 on the first lap of the first Sportsman heat. The East Peoria resident was not injured. An extension that will raise the retaining wall throughout the north turns is expected to be installed in the coming week.

UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Night 14: VanWormer Powers To Second Victory Of Tour At Peoria Speedway
PEORIA, IL – July 1, 2008 – By Kellen Burns/DIRTcar Racing P.R. -
Winning certainly never gets old for Pinconning, Mich.’s Jeep VanWormer.
The 33-year-old driver enjoyed another UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals triumph on Tuesday night, visiting RacingJunk.com Victory Lane for the second time on the 2008 tour at Peoria Speedway.
VanWormer hopes that his checkered flag sets him off on a strong run down the Summer Nationals homestretch.
“Hopefully we can win the rest of them (Summer Nationals events),” remarked the chauffeur of the popular No. 55, who sits fourth in the tour’s points standings. “That wouldn’t hurt my feelings a bit.”
VanWormer saw things go his way early in the evening, using a strong qualifying run and heat-race victory to position himself on the inside of the second row for the start of the 40-lap feature.
“We just had a good qualifying run and heat race,” said VanWormer, who earned $6,000 for his eighth career Summer Nationals win. “We drew third (for the A-Main) and that put us where we wanted to be – right on the bottom.”
VanWormer overtook defending Summer Nationals champion and current points leader Dennis Erb Jr. of Carpentersville, Ill., for the lead on the second lap and never looked back. With the race running caution-free after an opening-lap slowdown, VanWormer maintained solid command and crossed the finish line ahead of former Summer Nationals champion Kevin Weaver of Gibson City, Ill.,
Weaver used his familiarity with Peoria Speedway to his advantage. The runner-up finish was his best of the 2008 Summer Nationals.
“I’ve got a few laps around this place,” said Weaver, who started fourth. “We just have a pretty good Bill West car and we’ve just been working on it. I’m hoping to put some more good finishes together.”
Weaver was unsure if he could have challenged VanWormer with the help of a late-race caution flag, but he still took positives from the second-place finish.
“It’s hard to change your line and know where someone is behind you to try and pass someone else,” said Weaver. “It would have been tough to pass him.”
UMP DIRTcar hotshoe Wes Steidinger of Fairbury,Ill., came through with another strong showing. Starting fifth, ‘The Fairbury Flyer’ used the low line to earn a hard fought third-place finish.
“I think we might have been better (than VanWormer and Weaver),” said Steidinger. “It got kind of one-lane on the bottom there.”
The competitive Steidinger took the third-place finish in stride on a track most drivers found hard to pass on late in the distance.
“Maybe I could have squeezed by them guys,” the pilot of the Rayburn No. J1 said of challenging the leaders. “It would have taken me several laps. I think we would have needed 100 laps instead of 40.”
Brian Shirley of Chatham, Ill., finished fourth after slipping by Erb in the final laps, leaving Erb fifth at the finish. That left Erb atop the Summer Nationals points standings by just three markers over Shirley after 14 events.
Forty UMP DIRTcar Super Late Models packed the pits at Peoria Speedway, with Steidinger’s lap of 12.522 seconds fastest in the group qualifying session.
Heat races were won by Erb, Randy Korte of Highland, Ill., Weaver and VanWormer, while Steve Sheppard Jr. of New Berlin, Ill., captured the B-Main and Steve Lance Jr. of Cuba, Ill., topped the C-main.
The UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals continues on Wednesday night (July 2) at Morgan County Speedway in Jacksonville, Ill.

ERB TAKES THE BOHLANDER 100 AT PEORIA
SPEEDWAY
by Jeff Adams
(PEORIA, IL) 2007 UMP National Champion Dennis Erb of Carpentersville dueled
2007 NASCAR Illinois State Champion Tim Lance, for 50 laps, before finally
making the pass for the lead on lap 87and holding on to win the “Don Bohlander
100” for Parkinson’s research at Peoria Speedway Saturday night.
On a cool night, the action was red-hot, with a new track configuration proving
to be nearly record-breaking fast. In time trials, Davenport, IA driver Brian
Harris missed the all-time track record by a mere .016 with a lap of 12.481. The
top 6 qualifiers were locked into the feature event, and re-drew for the top 6
starting positions. Heat races were won by Steve Lance, Jr. and Charley Hess,
setting the 20 car starting field.
Lance and Hebron, IN driver Shawn Toczek paced the field for the start of the
100 lap feature, with Lance finally getting the jump after 2 aborted re-starts.
Lance held the lead over several caution periods until Erb was on his back
bumper on lap 35. Erb started pressuring Lance heavily at the mid-way point, and
the pair raced each other hard until Erb finally made the pass stick on lap 87.
Erb held on for the $4,000 win, Lance finished 2nd, with Ryan Dauber,
Lance, Jr., and Wes Steidinger rounding out the top 5. Only 7 cars were running
at the checkered flag.
Joe Markle won the Sportsman feature, with Matt Musgrave winning the Hornet
feature. The races were held in honor of 10 time Track Champion Don Bohlander,
who has been stricken with Parkinson’s Disease. Over $14,000 was raised for
Parkinson’s research and will be donated in Bohlanders’ name.
Peoria Speedway will host a regular program next Saturday night featuring Late
Models, Modifieds, Sportsman, Street Stocks, Bombers and Hornets.
