UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Race 23:
McCreadie Masters Oakshade as Erb Earns Third UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Crown

Wauseon, OH — July 11, 2009 — Tim McCreadie and Dennis Erb Jr. were men on separate missions Saturday night at Oakshade Raceway in Wauseon, Ohio, and both achieved their goals.

McCreadie, of Watertown, N.Y., charged quickly to the front after starting eighth, took the lead near the mid-point of the 60-lap UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals finale, and drove away with the checkered flag for the first Hell Tour victory of his impressive career.

“My car was good and planted,” said McCreadie, the 2006 World of Outlaws Late Model Series champion. “I could be aggressive and just poke a guy and get him to move out of his line and get by. It was a good race the whole way.”

McCreadie didn't know what to expect entering the final two events on the 2009 Hell Tour schedule, but quickly found out how tough it can be any given night at a UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals race.

“These guys are no joke on this deal,” he said. “I wasn't ready for the way they race out here. They're no slouches, they know the area and they've been racing so much and they're on edge.”

Erb, the two-time defending UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals champion, entered the finale second in points behind Randy Korte. Erb needed to finish four spots ahead of Korte to have a shot at the crown. Erb chased McCreadie to the checkered flag and posted his fourth overall runner-up finish during the 2009 Hell Tour, while Korte finished off the month-long series with a 10th-place run. The difference secured the crown for Erb by a mere 8 points.

“I feel a bunch of relief right now,” said Erb, of Carpentersville, Ill. “After going through the whole month and dealing with everything you experience, along with racing hard each and every night, to be able to be behind in the points and still come here and be able to get it done feels good."

“I felt pressure because I wasn't happy with the way I ran [Friday] night,” he said. “I just had to come here and do the best I could do.”

Rusty Schlenk, of Jackson, Mich., started on the front row and lead the race early on, fending off Shannon Babb in the early stages of the 60-lap main event and eventually settling for third.

“I was running scared about the first 10 laps and then I started to look over my shoulder and didn't see anyone so I knew I had a good lead,” said Schlenk, the Oakshade Raceway champion. “I backed off a bit to try and save tires but I don't think I did early enough.”

Schlenk put up a strong battle in trying to fight off McCreadie and Erb before cruising to the checkered flag in a podium position.

“It always makes you feel good, at least it proves to these guys they can't come in and walk all over us,” Schlenk said. “When we're out in Illinois these guys talk about coming to Oakshade and how tough it is. When they're worried about coming here and getting beat by local guys you know you're doing something right.”

Babb, of Moweaqua, Ill., finished fourth while Chatham, Ill., driver Brian Shirley mounted one of the biggest charges to the front, finishing 5th after starting 16th.

Korte, of Highland, Ill., entered the night riding a 20-point cushion in the championship standings over Erb, but with the Erb drawing the pole and Korte relegated to a 9th-place starting spot, things were hard for Korte to come by late.

“I think we beat ourselves tonight,” a dejected Korte said. “We messed around with the car and shouldn't have.”

Korte and Erb wound up in the same heat race. Korte led before Erb used a high groove pass on a restart to claim the win.

“I didn't feel real good about the car in the heat race so we changed some stuff and it was terrible in the feature,” Korte said. “I should have just left it the way we've had it the entire UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals and not changed anything. I did my best and just didn't have it tonight.”

HELL TOUR NOTES

2008 Oakshade Summer Nationals winner Matt Miller, of Waterville, Ohio, lead all qualifying efforts with a lap of 16.311 seconds during his group three effort. Other quick timers among the 58 competitor field were Rich Neiser, of Fruitport, Mich., eventual winner Tim McCreadie, Dennis Erb Jr., and Dona Marcoullier, of Houghton Lake, Mich.

Heat race one action saw Rich Neiser fend off Brian Ruhlman and Scott James for the win while heat two saw Shannon Babb and McCreadie battle it out for the win as Babb barely edged McCreadie at the line. Rick Aukland, of Zanesville, Ohio, raced to a large lead over Rodney Melvin, of Logan, Ill., to win the third heat race.

Heat four paired championship contenders Dennis Erb and Randy Korte on the front row as Korte grabbed the early lead. A caution midway through the heat race gave Erb the opportunity he needed as he used the high line to drive around Korte and onto the heat race win. Heat race five came down to the wire as Rusty Schlenk stole the win away from Aaron Scott at the line by mere inches after Schlenk had pressured Scott throughout the 10-lap distance.

Frank Heckenast Jr. of Orland Park, Ill., and Donny Walden, of Towanda, Ill., each won C-Mains. Brian Shirley claimed the B-Main win ahead of Wayne Chinn, of Bradford, Ohio, and Jeep Van Wormer, of Pinconning, Mich. Provisionals were awarded to Jason Feger, of Bloomington, Ill., Dusty Moore, of Swanton, Ohio and Ronnie Perrine Jr., of Lima, Ohio.

UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Race 22: Babb Blasts to Waynesfield Win as Korte Drives Closer to His First Crown

Waynesfield, OH — July 10, 2009 — Shannon Babb is the hottest driver on the UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Hell Tour over the past couple of weeks, adding his fourth win in the past six starts Friday night at Waynesfield Motorsports Park.

With only Saturday's finale at Oakshade Speedway in Wauseon, Ohio, remaining on the 2009 Hell Tour, Babb's slow start in the series will prevent him from capturing his third Summer Nationals crown. That race within the race on Saturday night will be between current points leader Randy Korte and two-time and defending champion Dennis Erb Jr. The 2006 UMP DIRTcar Late Model national champion, Korte is seeking his first title in the month-long Hell Tour series that started June 11 with 27 races in 31 days.

But Friday night belonged to Babb. He started sixth and blasted to the $7,500 checkered flag through a strong field of cars that included former World of Outlaws Late Model Series champion Tim McCreadie as well as UMP DIRTcar Roundup champion Brian Shirley. After a long night of trouble with his hauler Thursday at La Salle Speedway, Korte, of Highland, Ill., used a provisional on Friday and finished ninth to keep his championship dreams alive as he extended his lead over Erb, a native of Carpentersville, Ill., who started and finished 13th.

“I wanted to let the top burn off because it was really dominant and I knew there wasn't any sense in running my stuff too hard early because we were going to hit traffic,” said Babb, of Moweaqua, Ill. “Once we hit traffic I was able to get under Brian (Shirley) off of two.”

Babb's momentum hasn't changed his approach to the night in and night out grind of the Summer Nationals tour.

“Anyone that gets going knows the changes to make and I've got a lot of good help,” Babb said. “We'll just keep plugging away.”

Jason Feger, of Bloomington, Ill., did his best in the closing laps to nab what would have been his third victory but fell just inches short.

“I knew I was way too tight early,” said Feger, who has been a championship contender throughout the tour. “We got better as the race went on, especially coming off of four, but Shannon was really good too.”

Feger, who earned his two career “Hell Tour” wins in the 2009 edition was happy about his performance as well as the venue itself.

“I'm happy with second,” Feger said. “This is a really nice place and everyone I talked to seemed to really like it here.”

Duane Chamberlain, of Richmond, Ind., rejoined the tour with a strong third-place finish.

“We've just had some bad luck lately,” he said. “Nineteen days away from home can wear on you so it felt good to come out and get a top 3 finish.”

Chamberlain drove a similar line to Feger in charging from eight to round out the podium.

“I slowed down at the end tonight because I burnt my right front tire up and developed a push,” Chamberlain said. “But overall we had a good night.”

Outside polesitter Brian Shirley, of Chatham, Ill., settled for a fourth-place finish while Rick Aukland, of Zanesville, Ohio, moved up from ninth to round out the top five.

HELL TOUR NOTES

Doug Drown, of Wooster, Ohio, paced a very strong showing of UMP DIRTcar Late Models in group time trials on the night. Drown's lap of 12.20 seconds around his homestate track led group one while Scott James of Lawrenceburg, Ind., was quickest in group two and eventual winner Shannon Babb timed in fastest for group three.

Heat race one saw some of the biggest names in UMP DIRTcar Late Model competition duke it out on the third-mile oval. Jason Feger earned the win in the hotly contested race ahead of Doug Drown. Scott James raced to an early lead in claiming a heat race two win while Brian Shirley held off pressure from Shannon Babb in heat race three to claim the win.

The night's consolation race went to former World of Outlaws Late Models Series champion Tim McCreadie, of Watertown, N.Y., as the driver affectionately known as “T-Mac” to his fans raced to beat out Kevin Weaver of Gibson City, Ill., and Matt Miller, of Waterville, Ohio, at the line.

Series points leader Randy Korte was forced to use a provisional after he fell one spot out of a transfer position in the consolation race while Brian Ruhlman, of Clarklake, Mich., received the UMP National point provisional and Rick DeLong earned a track provisional for being the fastest qualifier not already locked into the A-Main.

UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Race 21: Korte Surges to La Salle Speedway Summer Nationals Victory

La Salle, IL — July 9, 2009 — Just as he's done throughout the first 20 nights of the UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Tour, points leader Randy Korte made a crowd-rousing charge to the front of the pack on Thursday night at La Salle Speedway. This time he made it pay off by grabbing the top spot with 12 laps to go and holding off Shannon Babb to capture his third victory of the 2009 Hell Tour.

Fifth-starting Korte, of Highland, Ill., maneuvered his way methodically through the field, passing leader Ryan Unzicker on lap 28 of the 40-lap main event to claim the $6,000 winner's prize.

“It just didn't seem like the bottom was very good,” Korte said. “I just moved up to the middle of the race track and the car seemed to come to life.”

Korte stretched his lead in the Hell Tour overall standings to 14 points over two-time and defending champion Dennis Erb Jr., of Carpentersville, Ill. With two races to go Korte, the 2006 UMP DIRTcar Late Model national champion, won't let that affect his focus.

“We're just chasing the race tracks, and chasing our race car,” said Korte, who has never won a UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals crown. “However, this turns out it's been a great UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals for me.”

Shannon Babb of Moweaqua, Ill., used a tremendous run from the ninth to finish second, eventually taking a shot at Korte in the closing laps only to fall a few car lengths short. “We might not have been perfect at all but we managed to ride around the first half of the race,” said Babb, a two-time Hell Tour champion. “The middle started to work for Randy. I saw that so I moved up there and it seemed to work for us.”

Erb, who followed Babb from the 10th on the grid, rounded out the podium. “I just waited for everyone to spread out a bit so we had some room to race,” said Erb, of his early strategy. “I had to go up to the top which was a little rough but we got around a bunch of cars there at the end.”

Ryan Unzicker, of El Paso Ill., who lead early in the main event, settled for fourth while polesitter Rodney Melvin, of Logan, Ill., rounded out the top five.

HELL TOUR NOTES

Terry Casey of New London Wis., paced the 42 other UMP DIRTcar Late Model competitors in qualifying time trials using a lap of 12.642 seconds around the quarter-mile La Salle (Ill.) Speedway to claim top honors in group one. Other fast time honors went to Dennis Erb Jr., Rodney Melvin, and Ted Loomis.

Heat race one saw polesitter Terry Casey earn the win over Shannon Babb. Jeep Van Wormer and Jason Feger were involved in a turn four tangle that eventually sidelined both cars for the remainder of heat race action. Ryan Unzicker claimed heat race two after lapped traffic helped him past then leader Brandon Sheppard of New Berlin, Ill.

Rodney Melvin and Gibson City, Ill., driver Kevin Weaver dualed side by side for the majority of heat race three. Melvin eventually held off the former UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals champion Weaver. Mark Voigt of Marine, Ill. claimed the second heat race ahead of a mad scramble for the second spot which Martinsville. Ind., driver Don O'Neal claimed.

Eric Smith won the night's B-Main while Frank Heckenast of Orland Park, Ill., claimed the B-Main win on what was the young driver's 21st birthday. Bret Sievert of New Berlin, Wis., also garnered a transfer position via his second place finish in the evening's B-Main. Provisionals were used by Jason Feger of Bloomington Ill., Steve Sheppard Jr. of New Berlin, Ill., and Ralph Markham of Maple Park, Ill.

UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Night 21: Wet Weather Spoils Spoon River Summer Nationals

Canton, IL — July 8, 2009 — Spot showers that developed in the afternoon hours in Canton, Ill., have forced the cancellation of what was set to be the 21st leg of the UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals at Spoon River Speedway.

No makeup will be ran for the 40-lap, $6,000-to-win race.

The rainout was the fifth of the 2009 version of the “Hell Tour”.

The UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Tour is set to resume Thursday night July 9th at La Salle (Ill.) Speedway for a 40-lap $6,000 to win event.

Randy Korte of Highland, Ill., once again holds a slim four point lead over defending champion Dennis Erb, with three races remaining on the UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals tour.

UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Race 20: Babb Rolls to Third Tour Victory at Shepp's Speedway

Alexandria, IL — July 7, 2009 —Better late than never for two-time UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals champion Shannon Babb on the Hell Tour circuit. On Tuesday night at Shepp's Speedway, Babb claimed his third feature win in his past four starts.

Babb's win came in the UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals initial visit to Shepp's Speedway, just outside New Berlin, Ill. Using an outside front row starting position, Babb, of Moweaqua, Ill., jumped out to a quick lead over pole sitter and defending champion Dennis Erb Jr., of Carpentersville, Ill.

Erb used quick time honors and a heat race win earlier in the night to claim the pole position for the 40-lap main event. Erb, who ran second the entire distance, made a last-ditch effort to clear Babb with less than 10 laps to go but wound up settling for the runner-up position.

Randy Korte, of Highland, Ill., charged from his 12th-place starting spot to finish third and retain his narrow lead over Erb in the overall “Hell Tour” championship standings. With the finish, Korte will take a 4-point lead into the remaining four events on the UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Tour.

Rodney Melvin, of Logan, Ill., claimed the fourth spot while Jason Feger, of Bloomington, Ill., rounded out the top five.

HELL TOUR NOTES

Defending UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals champion Dennis Erb Jr. paced group one of the 33 competitors around the small quarter-mile oval with a lap time of 12.015 seconds. Other group quick time honors were recorded by Brandon Sheppard of New Berlin, Ill., Jason Feger of Bloomington, Ill., and Terry Casey of New London Wisc.

Heat race one saw Erb use a good start and a very controlled drive through the first two turns to overcome outside polesitter Jeep Van Wormer of Pinconning, Mich., to capture the heat race win. Outside polesitter Rodney Melvin powered his way to the heat race two victory holding off a pressure from a very aggressive Brandon Sheppard.

Shannon Babb, of Moweaqua, Ill., got the jump in heat race number three and pulled away to the win as Jason Feger and Ryan Unzicker of El Paso, Ill., battled for the second spot. Mark Voigt avoided a slide job attempt from Terry Casey in turns one and two in the fourth and final heat race to claim the last heat race victory.

Adam Mefford of nearby Jacksonville, Ill., claimed the B-Main win. Second place finisher Derek Chandler of Pontiac, Ill., along with winner Mefford earned transfer spots into the night's 40-lap main event. Provisionals were used by Jeep Van Wormer, Mike Hammerle of St. Charles, Mo., and Roger Brickler of Springfield, Ill.

UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Race 19: Korte Wheels to Vermillion County Victory

Danville, IL — July 5, 2009 — Defending UMP DIRTcar Late Model National Champion Randy Korte knew a victory on Sunday night was crucial to his quest for his first Hell Tour title. He had a slim 4-point lead in the UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals championship standings, and extended it at Vermillion County Speedway in Danville, Ill., by powering his way to the checkered flag.

The win was only Korte's second victory on the 2009 Hell Tour, but combined with his 12 top-five finishes, it has him atop the standings with one week to go.

Defending “Hell Tour” champion Dennis Erb Jr., of Carpentersville, Ill., finished second to keep pace with Korte, of Highland, Ill., in the rankings. Erb climbed from a fifth-place starting spot using an unconventional outside groove to maneuver his way to the front. Erb made multiple attempts to steal the win away from Korte late but settled for a runner-up finish.

Ryan Unzicker, of El Paso, Ill., finished third after also challenging Korte for the lead near the midpoint of the race. He eventually fell to a high side running Erb in the battle for the runner up spot. It was Unzicker's fourth top-five performance with his second place at Charleston (Ill.) Speedway being his best finish.

Jason Feger, of Bloomington, Ill., finished fourth while Shannon Babb, of Moweaqua, Ill., rounded out the top five.

UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Race 19: Mother Nature claims I-55 Raceway Summer Nationals

Pevely, MO — July 4, 2009 — Rain showers that started overnight and continued through the morning and afternoon hours in Pevely, Mo., have forced the cancellation of what was set to be the 19th leg of the UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals at I-55 Raceway. The rainout comes after the 2008 version of the UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals were cancelled due to flooding at the high banked third-mile track.

No makeup was immediately announced for the 40-lap, $10,000-to-win race, although UMP DIRTcar and track officials were discussing possible makeup dates.

The rainout was the fourth of the 2009 version of the “Hell Tour”.

The UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Tour is set to resume Sunday night July 5th at Vermillion County (Ill.) Speedway for a 40-lap $6,000 to win event.

Randy Korte of Highland, Ill., holds a slim four point lead over defending champion Dennis Erb with six races remaining on the UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals tour.

Babb Capitalizes on Melvin’s Troubles

 By Jack Walbring

Shannon Babb made good fortune of Rodney Melvin’s bad fortune in the UMP Summer Nationals at Quincy Raceways on Friday, July 3. Babb battled with Melvin throughout the main event as he tried in vain to pass Melvin during the first 34 laps but Melvin had ignition problems in turn one with six laps left in the KRNQ/Pepsi Inside Track Miller Lite forty lap $10,000 to win feature. Melvin’s problems brought out the yellow flag setting up what looked to be another battle as Billy Moyer, Terry Casey and Dennis Erb close up for the final six laps. Babb pulled to a comfortable lead over the final six circuits to win by a margin of 1.2 seconds over Moyer in second, Terry Casey in third, Dennis Erb in fourth and Bill Frye in fifth. The early laps of the main event were marred by the off track excursions of Kevin Weaver, Brian Birkhofer and Brian Shirley. Shirley was uninjured as his car rolled off turn two and landing on his roof.

The heat races were won by Jeep VanWormer, Rodney Melvin, Shannon Babb and Bill Frye with Frank Heckenast Jr. and Jason Feger transferring to the main event from the B-Main. A light, intermittent sprinkle kept the racing surface tacky throughout the nights racing action but never brought the event to a stop or delay. Randy Korte now leads Dennis Erb by a slim unofficial four points after event number 18 on the “Hell Tour”.

Up next at Quincy Raceways is the annual Pepsi Mid Season Championship for the Budweiser IMCA Late Models, Miller Lite UMP Modifieds, Triple R Performance Engines IMCA Stock Cars and the Tim’s Machine Shop Hobby Stocks on Sunday, July 5. UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Race 18: Shannon Babb Blasts to Second Straight Win at Quincy

Quincy, IL — July 3, 2009 — In a spectacle that resembled a Blue Angels-like performance on the quarter-mile Quincy, (Ill.) Raceways, Shannon Babb of Moweaqua, Ill., claimed his second win of the 2009 UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Tour.

Babb, a two-time “Hell Tour” champion, held off dirt late model legend Billy Moyer of Batesville, Ark., and withstood early pressure from Jeep Van Wormer of Pinconning, Mich., while running second, eventually leading the last seven laps for the win.

“When we rolled around there for pace laps I knew it was going to be fast and hard to handle,” Babb said with a large grin. “It was wide open as hard as we could go.”

On what was a lightning fast track the entire night, Babb glued his nose right to the rear quarter panel of Logan, Ill., driver Rodney Melvin for the first 33 laps of the 40-lap main event, until Melvin suffered an ignition failure giving Babb the lead and open track ahead. “Rodney was really good," said Babb. “It was unfortunate what happened to him because I would like to have passed him the right way.”

After the inconsistencies Babb has suffered during his 2009 “Hell Tour”, things seem to be turning the corner for the driver known as “The Moweaqua Missile”. “I'm just really happy to get to victory lane tonight,” he said.

Moyer, a former Babb mentor, finished second to his former student on the night. “It was fast, muddy, and hard to see,” said Moyer of the conditions. “He (Babb) was the best car and he deserved to win the race.”

Moyer tailed Babb the closing seven laps getting within a car length at time. “We just kind of kept our nose clean,” reasoned Moyer. “We'll be able to load it up and go to the next race.”

Terry Casey of New London, Wisc., finished third after taking a night off from the grueling “Hell Tour” to regroup during the tour's stop at Macon (Ill.), Speedway. Casey charged from his 14th starting position to his best finish since a runner-up finish at Charleston, (Ill.) Speedway.

Defending champion Dennis Erb of Carpentersville, Ill., finished fourth, a spot he claimed for the second night in a row after a late pass of fifth place finisher Bill Frye of Greenbrier, Ark.

HELL TOUR NOTES

Thirty-three UMP DIRTcar Late Models arrived at the Quincy, Ill. quarter-mile to compete for the largest purse ever offered at the track. Brian Birkhofer of Muscatine, Iowa earned quick time honors in group one while Donny Walden of Towanda, Ill., was fastest in group two. Will Vaught of Crane, Mo., was quickest in group three and quickest overall with a lap of 12.669 seconds. Terry English of Benton, Ky., set fast time in group four to round out qualifying.

The front row was definitely the place to be during heat races on the night as all four winners came from a front row starting position to garner wins. Jeep Van Wormer of Pinconning, Mich., got a jump early on polesitter Brian Birkhofer as the lead duo screamed around the Illinois oval separated by only a few feet for the duration.

Heat two saw Rodney Melvin beat Donny Walden into turn one and claim a heat win. Quick timers Babb and Frye both won their respective heat races from the pole with Babb claiming heat three and Frye the fourth heat race.

Scott James led early in the night's B-Main before slipping over what was a very treacherous cushion in turns one and two giving his lead to young Frank Heckenast Jr. of Orland Park, Ill. Jason Feger of Bloomington, Ill., followed Heckenast to the line for the final transfer spot.

Provisionals for the evening went to Wes Steidinger of Fairbury, Ill., long-time UMP DIRTcar competitor Mike Hammerle of St. Charles, Mo., and local Bill Genenbacher of Camp Point, Ill.

Shannon Babb Returns Home for Second Herald & Review 100 Win!

By Brett Zerfowski

(Macon, IL) The UMP Summernationals presents the only opportunity Moweaqua native Shannon Babb has to return to his home track. He was able to dominate the 2006 Summernationals tour and the Herald & Review 100 leading all 100 laps. The 29th Annual Herald & Review 100 was also a memorable night for Babb as he grabbed his first Summernationals win and second Herald & Review 100.

After taking the overall top qualifying time of 10.406 (track record is 10.311), Babb finished second in the second heat behind Rodney Melvin of Benton. That helped put him second row outside to start the 100-lap event.

Rodney Melvin started the race front row outside and led the first 18 laps. Into the third turn of the 19th lap, Melvin was running along side Babb on the bottom of the track and Babb blew by Melvin to take the lead. That would be the last time Babb would be seriously challenged.

Bloomington's Jason Feger tried to catch up to Babb but the Sheltra Construction car was too much for any other racecar on the track.

Feger and Brian Shirley needed a caution to catch up to the leader, who was nearly a straight-away lead from the rest of the frontrunners. They would get that on lap 82, breaking a streak of 56 consecutive green-flag laps. On the restart, Feger would trail Babb and Shirley but then a flat tire doomed him and forced him to the infield for a right rear tire change. After the change, Feger would jump to the back of the pack and try to work his way back up with only 18 laps remaining.

On the lap 82 restart, Babb blew away the field en route to his first win of the tour, only his second checkered flag of 2009, and his name etched into the Macon Speedway history books as a two-time Herald & Review 100 winner.

All 100 laps were completed an amazing 33 minutes and only saw four cautions.

On the pole for the feature was the 16-year-old Brandon Sheppard, the youngest to ever take the pole for Herald & Review 100. He was second-fastest in his qualifying group and took the heat win over his father Steve Sheppard, Jr.

The Street Stocks and Modifieds were also apart of the program and saw Steve Ewing win his sixth Street Stock feature and Tim Hancock won his first feature in his first trip to Macon Speedway. Hancock started from the 14th position (seventh row outside) and wound bypassing Aaron Burcham and Mike Haas to claim the lead and the win.

The first of two big nights of racing is over and that paves the way to our nation抯 birthday and the 95Q Firecracker 40s. Modifieds and Street Stocks will run 40-lap features and Macon Speedway will welcome back the POWRi Mini Sprints for their next race in the summer series. Touchstone Energy Sportsman and Pro and Amateur Hornets will also be on the card for the special July 4th program at Macon Speedway. During the StarTek Intermission program, there will be a huge fireworks display!

UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Race 17: Babb Slides to Macon Summer Nationals Victory

Macon, IL — July 2, 2009 —Using a turn three slide job on the 19th lap of the Herald and Review 100 Shannon Babb of nearby Moweaqua, Ill. claimed his first UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals victory of 2009.

Babb, who owns two “Hell Tour” championships, never looked back leading over the course of the next 81 laps to take the win.

” It means a lot to win here on a night where there was definitely good racing,” said Babb. “We've had a lot of bad luck, because I've slipped through so many easy spots all these years I seem to be getting paid back this year.”

Babb, who had won a previous Herald and Review 100 at Macon, (Ill.) Speedway in 2006, found openings at the right time allowing him to distance himself as early as he could in the 100-lapper. “The track was perfect and everyone gave me room to roll around,” said Babb.

Brian Shirley of Chatham, Ill., started fourth, just ahead of eventual winner Babb, and found the high groove to his liking while working his way into second by a lap 17 caution. Shirley unfortunately couldn't muster enough to challenge Babb late in the going. “Shannon would have had to mess up,” he said. “I was just going to ride around there with him and come home second but, all and all it was a good night.”

Logan, Ill., native Rodney Melvin held off multiple drivers in route to capturing a third place finish after leading early on in the 100-lap event. “All and all we had a good run,” said Melvin.

Melvin, who got his first top five finish since June 25th at Clay Hill Motorsports Park, believes he may have solved his recent troubles.

“I found out the last two nights that we shouldn't work on our racecar,” he said. “Just put tires on the car and go race it.”

Defending champion Dennis Erb Jr. of Carpentersville, Ill., sliced through the field after using a provisional to start 19th, while a current series point leader Randy Korte, of Highland, Ill. completed a similar quest charging from 17th to round out the top five.

Other quick time honors went to Steve Sheppard Jr. of New Berlin, Ill., Tim Lance of Brimfield, Ill., and Brian Shirley of Chatham, Ill.

Current UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals point leader Randy Korte of Highland, Ill. won the night's B-Main followed to the line by Terry Babb who held off a charging Dennis Erb Jr. Erb would use a provisional along with Wes Steidinger of Fairbury, Ill. and Chris Dick of Deland, Ill.

UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Race 16: Van Wormer Dominates Highland

Highland, IL — July 1, 2009 – A night after playing runner up, Jeep Van Wormer said no more as he cruised to the UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals win at Highland (Ill.) Speedway Wednesday night.

The Pinconning, Mich., driver used his pole position starting spot for the 40-lap race to jump to an early lead over local competitors Mark Faust and Mark Voigt.

“We had a good car even in our heat race,” explained Van Wormer who swept all three parts of the evening's program in which he was involved. “It was a tough call on tires tonight so we were jumping back and forth; we finally found the right combination.”

The win was Van Wormer's third on the 2009 “Hell Tour”, all three of which have come on tracks a quarter-mile in size. “The car was perfect, honestly it was just amazing,” Van Wormer said. “It's really good just to go out there and concentrate on winning races.”

Track regular Mark Faust held off a multiple attempts by the likes of Rodney Melvin and Mark Voigt to capture second place during his only UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals appearance to date.

“We were happy with starting in front because it would have been really tough if we would have had to come from any further back,” Faust said. “There aren't any slouches in a UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals field that's for sure.”

Mark Voigt claimed the third spot, his best “Hell Tour” finish of 2009. “Once things started going we were alright because the car was really good, it just took it awhile to get going,” said Voigt. “We'll take it, I'm not complaining.”

Rodney Melvin of Logan, Ill., was fourth and defending “Hell Tour” champion Dennis Erb Jr. of Carpentersville, Ill., finished fifth.

HELL TOUR NOTES

39 UMP DIRTcar Late Models rolled into the Highland Speedway pits to take their shot at the $6,000 winner's prize. Four groups of qualifying time trials blazed the quarter-mile facility with Shannon Babb collecting fast time in group three and fast time overall with a lap of 13.487 seconds around the Madison County Ill., oval. Other fast time honors were collected by Mark Voigt in group one, Randy Korte in group two, and Jeep Van Wormer in group four.

Voigt of Marine, Ill., used the pole in heat one to get a jump on the field and led the entire way to claim the win. Heat race two saw current UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals point leader Randy Korte not be able to make the call due to engine woes after time trials allowing Mark Faust to start on the pole. Faust battled with Rusty Schlenk of for most of the race as Faust nipped Schlenk at the line to claim the win.

Heat three saw Babb claim the win ahead of a myriad of others all battling for second place including Ryan Unzicker, Kevin Weaver, Frank Heckenast Jr., and Jason Feger. Jeep Van Wormer checked out from the drop of the green flag to take the win in the fourth heat race that produced some on-track drama when Steve Sheppard Jr. and Dennis Erb Jr. came together out of turn four, with Sheppard not being allowed to return to the racing surface for the remainder of the night.

Duane Chamberlain captured the evenings B-Main with Jason Feger in tow. The two earned transfer positions in the night's 40-lap main event. Provisionals were given to Randy Korte, Michael Kloos (via Steve Sheppard Jr.'s disqualification), and Paul Bailey.

UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Race 15: Feger Rim Rides to Peoria Win

Peoria, IL — June 29, 2009 — Everyone in the packed grandstands at Peoria (Ill.), Speedway knew where Jason Feger was headed when the green flag flew Tuesday Night for the 40-lap “Hell Tour” main event.

That didn't stop the 31-year-old Bloomington, Ill., driver from executing his game plan precisely as he drove around the extreme outside of the banked quarter-mile oval to his second UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Victory.

“I'm actually more comfortable up there,” said Feger of the line he ran. “I get nervous when I have to slow down and run the bottom around the tires.”

Feger, the owner of multiple wins in the UMP Sportsman division at Peoria, captured his first ever Late Model victory at the track, which is a mere 35 miles from his hometown.

“It feels really good to win here,” he said. “We have a big fan base here and it's always been a great track that packs the stands.”

2008 Peoria Speedway Summer Nationals winner Jeep Van Wormer settled for a runner-up finish.

“I wanted to run the middle initially,” remarked Van Wormer. “That's where I won it last year, but there was just too much dust.”

Van Wormer of Pinconning, Mich., searched high and low to find a way around Feger late but a bobble on the cushion in the waning laps sealed his fate.

“Jason had a great car,” conceded Van Wormer. “I can't say enough about those guys, they're a great group of guys.”

Early leader Kevin Weaver of Gibson City, Ill., came to the checkered flag third after battling with Feger for the lead for the first half of the 40-lap main event.

“Peoria is usually known to run the bottom but it was a little bit different this year,” said Weaver of the line he held throughout the event. “We made a little mistake on an adjustment so we'll just try and not forget that next time.”

Orland Park, Ill., driver Frank Heckenast and current UMP DIRTcar Summer National point leader Randy Korte of Highland, Ill., rounded out the top five.

Shannon Babb blasted around the new Peoria surface setting a new track record among 39 other UMP DIRTcar Late Model competitors at Peoria (Ill.) Speedway. Babb's lap was 12.119 seconds beat the previous record by .29 seconds. Other quick time honors went to Wes Steidinger, Terry Cassey, and Jeep Van Wormer.

Heat race action saw Rodney Melvin from Logan, (Ill.) hound Babb early on eventually sliding in front of the newly crowned track record holder out of turn four to take a heat race one victory. Kevin Weaver led every lap in route to a heat two win and subsequently drew the pole for the 40-lap main event.

Eventual winner Feger showed signs of what was to come in heat race three as he used the top-side of the banked oval to motor around Terry Casey and Randy Korte to claim heat race three while Jeep Van Wormer got a great jump in heat race four and never looked back in route to the win.

The night's C-Main saw Kyle Logue, a heat race winner the night prior, take the win while Ryan Unzicker won the night's B-Main with Brandon Sheppard finishing in the final transfer spot, a close second. Provisionals were used by Duane Chamberlain, Rusty Schlenk, and local Charlie Hess.

UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Race 13: Korte Gets First Tour Win of 2009 with Lincoln Victory

Lincoln, IL - June 28, 2009 – There was one thing missing on Randy Korte's Hell Tour resume when he rolled through the pit gates at Lincoln, (Ill.), Speedway Sunday Night. Korte changed all of that in winning his first UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals main event at the quarter-mile track.

Korte, who started eighth in the 40-lap feature charged through the field to pass polesitter Shannon Babb by lap eight and never looked back. Working his way through the fields has been a common theme for Korte as of late, but the absence of a win was wearing on the Highland,Ill., driver.

“It's killing me not to have won a race,” he said after a feature event charge fell short at Tri-City, (Ill.) Speedway.

Korte, who earned his first “Hell Tour” win of the year, also currently leads the UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Points Rankings on the strength of nine top-ten finishes in the tour's frist 13 races.

Babb, who set the pace for the initial seven laps, mounted a late charge of his own only to settle for second. It was his second runner up finish of the 2009 version of the “Hell Tour”, one that's been anything but reminiscent of his 2005-06 triumphs.

Jason Feger, of Bloomington, Ill., who recently captured his first ever UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals win ended up third ahead of champion Dennis Erb, and early tour winner Eric Smith.

Other fast time honors went to former MARS DIRTcar Series champion Bill Frye, Wisconsin driver Terry Casey, and two-time UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals champion Shannon Babb.

Four heat races were contested on the night as both Frye and Babb claimed the second and fourth heat race wins from the pole. The first heat race saw Brian Shirley dispose of Carpentersville, Ill., driver Dennis Erb using the outside groove to claim the win. Heat three saw outside row one starter Jason Feger use the same line as Shirley in powering to the heat win.

Mark Voight used a B-Main win to transfer to the main event along with Scott Bull. Provisionals on the night went to Terry Casey, Wes Steidinger, and Richie Hedrick.

UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Race 12: Moyer Claims Third Straight at Fairbury

Fairbury,IL - June 27, 2009 – People often theorize that things will happen three at a time. That's certainly been the case lately for Billy Moyer.

On a night where Moyer once again climbed from outside the front row to claim his fifth overall win of the UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Tour he also claimed quick time honors as well as a heat race victory. The theme of three doesn't stop there for the Batesville, Ark. legend as it was the third time throughout the first 12 events that Moyer has swept all three parts of the program he's been involved in.

Moyer claimed the win ahead of Frank Heckenast Jr of Orland Park, Ill., who earned his career best finish on the “Hell Tour”. Heckenast drew the pole for the 50-lap main event and led through the early parts of the main event but eventually fell to Moyer on lap 14.

Kevin Weaver of Gibson City, Ill., who lead the “Hell Tour” point standings early in the 27-race tour passed Heckenast near the same point as Moyer but Heckenast fought back late to relegate Weaver to a third place finish.

Defending UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals champion Dennis Erb settled for a fourth place finish while current point leader Randy Korte climbed from tenth to finish fifth and retain his overall point lead.

Frank Heckenast Jr. moved by Jeep Van Wormer in heat race one and withstood multiple challenges throughout for the win over defending champion Dennis Erb. Melvin became one of two fast qualifiers to claim heat race wins in heats two while Kevin Weaver outran Steve Sheppard Jr. to claim the heat three victory. Heat race four featured eventual winner Moyer claiming the win from the pole over Ryan Unzicker who stole second from Billy Frye on the last lap.

Jason Feger captured the night's B-Main with Joe Harlan finishing second to claim the two transfer spots into the night's A-Main. Provisionals were taken by Scott James, Eric Smith, and defending track champion Daren Friedman

UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Race 11: Moyer Goes Back to Back for Paducah Victory

June 26, 2009 – Using lapped traffic to his advantage, Batesville, Ark. legend Billy Moyer slid past previous “Hell Tour” winner Jason Feger to claim the lead and eventually the win Friday Night at Paducah International Raceway.

Moyer's victory at Paducah was his second in as many nights on the 2009 edition of the “Hell Tour” and his fifth overall. Moyer followed in Feger's tracks in the top groove patiently waiting to make his move as he did late to claim the $10,000 top prize and add to his all time series leading win total.

Feger, who has been strong recently, settled for a second place finish on the night up one position from his third place starting spot. Aptly named “The Highside Hustler” Feger used the top side of the very steep banking at Paducah to take the lead throughout the middle of the 40-lap main event as well as claim a heat race win, and quick time honors earlier in the night.

Highland, Ill., driver Randy Korte charged through the field, which is slowly becoming a theme for the driver nicknamed “King Kong” from his eleventh place starting spot to claim third. Unofficially, Korte becomes the new UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals point leader.

Bill Frye and Will Vaught rounded out the top five on the night.

Will Vaught of Crane, Mo. Was quickest in group one while Tri-City (Ill.), Speedway winner Jason Feger timed in fastest in group two. Homestate favorite Terry English was quickest in group three and quickest overall with a lap of 15.698 and Bill Frye rounded out qualifying with a group four fast time.

Will Vaught and Jason Feger both bested their individual heat races claiming wins from the pole while eventual winner Billy Moyer was the first non-polesitter to claim a heat race win in heat three. In heat race four action Duane Chamberlain used the top groove to power past Bill Frye and claim the win.

UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Race 10: Moyer Maneuvers to Clay Hill Motorsports Park Win

June 25, 2009 — Billy Moyer was certainly “Mr. Smooth” during the UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Stop at Clay Hill Motorsports Park Thursday night.

Biding his time behind then race leader Shannon Babb, Moyer waited for the perfect time to pounce. When Babb slipped out of the low side groove where most of the drivers had chose to run, Moyer drove by him to lead the final five circuits in route to his third “Hell Tour” victory of 2009.

Babb would settle for second on the night after leading past halfway. The Moweaqua, Ill., driver had his best “Hell Tour” performance to date with his finish as well as a quick time honor and heat 3 win. Babb had used his pole position starting spot to battle with Logan, Ill., driver Rodney Melvin through the first five laps. Melvin had used the ill-fated high groove for those first five laps while Babb stayed low and eventually cleared Melvin on lap six.

2007 MARS DIRTcar Series Champion Bill Frye of Greenbrier, Ark., claimed the third spot climbing from a ninth-place starting spot during the 40 lap main event.

Rodney Melvin and Ryan Unzicker rounded out the top five.

38 UMP DIRTcar Late Models attempted qualifying time trials at the banked 3/8-mile facility. Charleston Speedway victor Rodney Melvin timed in quick in group one while Will Vaught, Shannon Babb, and Billy Moyer also captured quick time honors in their group with Moyer being fastest overall in group four.

Four heat races were contested on the night with Rodney Melvin outdistancing the heat one field to take the win while Will Vaught repeated the feat in heat two. Heat three saw Shannon Babb and Frank Heckenast Jr. swap the lead a few times until Babb secured the win late while heat four action saw Moyer lead from the drop of the green taking the win over defending “Hell Tour” champion Dennis Erb Jr.

Donny Walden of Towanda, Ill., claimed the night's C-Main which transferred him to the night's B-Main along with Derek Chandler, Austin Rettig, and Brent Kreke.

Tennessee native Dane Dacus claimed the B-Main over Jason McBride. Provisionals on the night were given to Kevin Weaver, Steve Sheppard Jr. and Terry English.

UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Race 9: Feger Hustles to Tri City Win

June 24, 2009 — Jason Feger lived up to the moniker “The Highside Hustler” on Wednesday night during the 40-Lap “Hell Tour” A-main event at Tri City (Ill.) Speedway.

Blistering the top side of the banked 3/8th mile oval, Feger held off charges from the likes of Scott James, Billy Moyer, and finally Randy Korte to claim victory. “We've been working our tails off and hard work pays off,” commented Feger. “The car was real good all night.”

Feger's first “Hell Tour” win was made more memorable due to the fact his mother, who was in attendance, was celebrating her 50th birthday at the track with her son. “It's really special to win on my Mom's birthday,” he said.

Korte, who has been one of the most consistent drivers on tour recently, settled for a runner up finish after climbing from his 9th place starting spot. ” Car was good, I just had to stay patient,” a smiling Korte said. “If we ever figured the qualifying out I think we can win some races.”

The 2006 UMP DIRTcar Late Model National Champion has been moving up the UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Rankings as of late, but the absence of a win on his resume for the year still remains his focus.

“I want to win a race,” said Korte. “I know its good finishing in the top five, but I'm a racer, and it's killing me to not win a race.”

Moyer finished third, a spot up from where he started the 40-lap main event. Running the low line early the dirt late model legend found the high side was just too fast.

“You just had to slow way down to stay in the moisture down at the bottom,” he said. ” We'll learn and go to the next one”.

UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Race 8: Melvin Cleans Up at Charleston

June 23, 2009 — “We'll just keep plugging away,” a reserved Rodney Melvin said after his second-place run at Belle Clair Speedway a week ago. That plugging away paid off Tuesday night as Melvin captured his first UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals win of 2009 at Charleston (Ill.) Speedway.

Melvin, who had two runner-up finishes in the past three Hell Tour events, took the lead just after the halfway point of the 40-lap main event when leader Scott James slowed with a flat right rear tire.

“I hate that James had a flat because our car was getting better,” said Melvin, of Logan, Ill. “We were too free at the start but the longer the race went the faster the car got.”

With the win, Melvin will move closer to the top of the Hell Tour championship standings.

“My sister showed me the points and so I said we have to keep going,” he said. “This should move us up more so I'm not going to count myself out. I think we can be there in the end. We've had a good car since the start of this deal. I've wanted to race lately. You can't just show up and expect to race with these guys you have to work on this stuff and live it. You just have to take this day by day.”

Melvin withstood pressure from Terry Casey and two-time Summer Nationals champion Shannon Babb on a Lap 21 restart to cruise to nearly a half straightaway win on a hot Tuesday night at the 3/8th-mile oval.

Casey held off Babb late for a runner-up finish on a track that confounded some drivers.

“It was just survival of the fittest,” Casey said. “I got lucky with (Jason) Feger having to go to the tail, and I just rode it out.”

Babb settled for a third-place finish, a nice rebound after his transmission issues on Sunday night at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, Ind.

A-Main Finish – 40 Laps

  1. 27-Rodney Melvin
  2. 42-Terry Casey
  3. 18-Shannon Babb

  18. B5-Brandon Sheppard
  19. 5s-Steve Sheppard Jr.
  20. 24-Ryan Unzicker

Shannon Babb, Randy Korte, and Rodney Melvin all paced three groups in qualifying time trials at the banked oval. Babb later dominated the first heat race outdistancing Jason Feger and Steve Casebolt. Scott James got the early jump on Randy Korte and Kevin Weaver leading every lap in heat two for the win and subsequently drew the pole for the 40 lap feature. Eventual winner Rodney Melvin captured the heat three win over eventual runner up Terry Casey.

UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Race 7: Van Wormer Wins Thriller at Tri-State

June 21, 2009 — Dirt track fans certainly got their money's worth on Sunday night at Tri-State Speedway.

In a high speed rodeo that saw a plethora of lead changes Jeep Van Wormer ended the night as the proverbial “last man standing”. The Pinconning, (Mich.) wheelman used his fourth starting spot and a very fast track to quickly garner third and then squeeze by leader Shannon Babb and Rodney Melvin as they were waging war for what was the top spot.

Van Wormer and Babb then traded a barrage of slide jobs out front. ”That's fun when you can go out there and have a car that's competitive like that and you can race like that with somebody,” said Van Wormer.

A lap 23 mishap caused Babb to slow on the front stretch. Van Wormer received damage from the incident but was able to remain at the point. “It was unfortunate because we had a pretty good battle going, swapping back and forth,” said Van Wormer of Babb's troubles.

Van Wormer later held off charges from both Rodney Melvin and Randy Korte to claim his second win of the 2009 UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals.

“The car started to pick up a vibration late so I was just trying to do the best I could and stay in that line that had been working for me,” he said. “I saw (Rodney) the lap prior to the white flag and I thought I've got to win this because we need it, so I held my line and it worked out for me.”

Melvin settled for a close second, bouncing back from a DNF the night prior. Melvin and fellow Illinois native Randy Korte also swapped the runner up position throughout the feature. “About the last four or five laps the car kept getting better and better,” remarked Melvin. ”We just ran out of laps because I think I had a good enough car to get by Jeep.”

Korte rounded out the weekend with another strong effort finishing third after a second place finish the night prior at Clarksville, (Tenn.) Speedway.

43 UMP DIRTcar Super Late Models set out to do battle Sunday night at Tri-State Speedway. The field was separated into five groups for qualifying time trails where Justin Ratliff, Derek Chandler, Rodney Melvin, Randy Korte, and overall quick time Donny Walden all claimed top honors in their individual groups.

Heat race action saw the best of UMP DIRTcar Late Model drivers get well acquainted with each other. Jeep Van Wormer nosed out defending “Hell Tour” champion Dennis Erb Jr. in heat race one while Shannon Babb outdistanced Jason Feger and Tim Lance to take a heat race two victory. Heat race three saw Rodney Melvin hold off Kevin Cole as well as current Summer Nationals point leader Kevin Weaver to claim the win.

Polesitter Randy Korte held off Terry Casey and Chad Zobrist in heat race four action while, heat race five featured the nights closest racing as Kevin Claycomb edged both Ryan Unzicker and Scott James at the line as the trio battled three wide out of turn four receiving the checkered flag.

UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Race 6: Billy Moyer Sweeps Clarksville

Clarksville, TN - June 20, 2009 - Billy Moyer can certainly be called the class of any dirt late model field that he chooses to compete against.  Saturday night at Clarksville Speedway, Moyer was just that.

"The car was excellent," remarked Moyer. "It's a newer car that we don't have a lot of nights on but, it's really coming around now that I'm getting familiar with it."

Blistering a lap that was two-tenth's quicker than his closest competitor in qualifying, Moyer went on to win his heat race and then dominate the 40-lap $10,000-to-win main event at the high banked oval.

"I was just watching the track in some of the other classes," said Moyer of developing his strategy.  "The bottom had a lot more grip and we were kind of married to it in the heat."

The Batesville, (Ark.) dirt late model hall of fame driver started the main event third but made quick work of Derek Chandler on his way to making a lap three pass of then leader Kevin Weaver.

"I wasn't really set up to run the bottom like I did in the heat," said Moyer.  "I just felt like once we got a little momentum going the middle was better for me."

Moyer claimed the checkers nearly a half of a straightaway ahead of second place Randy Korte of Highland, (Ill.), but Korte was definitely no slouch as he climbed from a seventh place starting spot to claim the second spot.  "I was hoping for a caution but it probably wouldn't have mattered because our right rear was shot," reasoned a please Korte.

"I was running the bottom and I wasn't any good because guys were driving right by me," Korte said of his progress.

"At some point you have to get up there (around the top) and see," Korte said.  "I just went up there and tried it and it worked."

Not to be outdone, last year's Summer Nationals runner-up Brian Shirley mounted what would be the most impressive charge of the night as Shirley rallied his Petroff Towing #3s from his 17th starting spot to finish third after transferring from the B-Main.

"The car was working really good," analyzed Shirley.  "Our cars have been good we just haven't had any breaks go our way but you'll see us back up front again."

"Tonight the track was great for racing," said Shirley.  "Hats off to William Scoggin for putting on a good race."

The 22nd edition of the UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals saw another great car count at Clarksville Speedway as 44 UMP DIRTcar Late Models rolled through the pit gates at the banked quarter-mile track.  The strong field was divided into 5 groups for qualifying time trials and heat race action.

Wisconsin driver Terry Casey timed in fast for group one with Derek Chandler tops in group two.  Billy Moyer was one of two cars entering the 12 second bracket as he set overall fast time in group three with a blistering lap of 12.743.  Group four saw local standout Brandon Chappell set fast time with Kevin Weaver rounding out qualifying with quick time honors in group five.

Heat race action at Clarksville Speedway saw all but one quick timer capture heat race victories as Casey, Chandler, Moyer, and Weaver all got wins.  The lone heat race winner not time trialing fastest in his group was Brent Kreke of Lebanon, (Ill.) who stole heat race four away from Tony Albright in the closing laps.

UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals defending champion and current point leader Dennis Erb used a B-Main win to secure a spot in the 40-lap main event.  Brian Shirley and Terry English also transferred from the B-Main.  Provisional starters on the night were Ryan Unzicker, who was involved in a scary accident in heat 5 that landed Chuck Proctor on top of the El Paso, (Ill.) driver, Charles Zimmerman, and Jason Feger.

UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Night 5: Erb Scores Second Straight Win at Belle Clair
Defending Champion Finding His Groove on the “Hell Tour”

Belleville, IL — June 17, 2009 — If you were wondering how many races it would take defending UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Champion Dennis Erb to hit his stride on the 2009 version of the “Hell Tour” you can stop counting.

“Everything is working real well for us,” Erb said after his second victory in as many nights. “I was just trying to bide my time out there and wait for the racetrack to come to me.”

Things started to look good for Erb early on as he claimed a heat three win in what was the most highly contested heat race of the night. Erb once again displayed his patience on the racetrack, a virtue that's been a central theme in his past two championships in the “Hell Tour” during the 40 lap main event.

“I didn't really like running the bottom out there I was trying to find a line where my car would work well,” remarked Erb. “It finally started to come in when the track got black.”

Erb used a pass to the outside of race long leader Duane Chamberlain to claim the lead with under 10 laps to go and then held off a late charge by Rodney Melvin to capture his second straight victory.

Melvin, who was strong in heat races no matter where he put his car kept his momentum rolling in the Summer Nationals main event climbing from his 5th place starting spot to finish second behind Erb.

“We had a good car,” remarked Melvin. “It just took awhile for the car to get going.”

Melvin challenged Erb for second and looked to grab the lead from Chamberlain near the mid-point of the main event but slid back in his attempt to make the pass on the top of the small bullring.

“I just got impatient,” said Melvin. “We'll just keep plugging away at it.”

Gibson City, IL driver Kevin Weaver was also another driver trying different lines in order to make a pass on the tiny 1/5 mile oval.

“I thought I had a good car on the top,” analyzed Weaver. “I got shuffled back when we hit lapped traffic and then went back to the bottom.”

Weaver took advantage of early leader Duane Chamberlain's late race woes to grab the 3rd spot in the closing laps.

“The bottom was definitely the place to be late,” reasoned Weaver. “It was kind of wait and see if we got into lapped traffic which the way it played out we didn't really get in any until the end.”

Forty seven UMP DIRTcar Late Models took qualifying time trials on a hot muggy night at the Belleville, IL fifth mile bullring. Group one qualifying saw Mark Voigt of Marine,IL come the closest to setting a new track record with a lap of 11.467 which was .207 seconds off the single lap record. Highland, IL driver Randy Korte topped the second session with a lap of 11.628, Jeep Van Wormer of Pinnconning, MI was fastest in group three with a lap of 11.977, Terry Casey was quickest in group four with a 12.080, and Steve Sheppard Jr. rounded out quick timers with a 12.235 in group five.

The “Flatland Flash” Kevin Weaver claimed heat race one, while group two quick timer Randy Korte claimed the second heat race. Heat three saw former UMP DIRTcar Late Model National Champion Rodney Melvin charge to the lead and hold off Jeep Van Wormer and Frank Heckenast Jr. to claim the win. Heat race four heated up an already hot night of action as Dennis Erb, Terry Casey, and Kevin Cole battled 3-wide on the tiny 1/5 mile with Erb eventually claiming the win. Duane Chamberlain rounded out heat race action with a heat five win over Steve Sheppard Jr. and Brian Beilong.

Mike Hammerle and Matt Wiedner claimed C-Main wins on the evening earning them a starting spot in the night's B-Main along with Kevin Cole and Clay Baumann.

Ryan Unzicker held off Shannon Babb and Derek Chandler in the nights B-Main to claim starting spots in the 40 lap main event while, Bloomington, IL driver Jason Feger, Michael Kloos, and Mike Hammerle all used provisionals to start the Summer Nationals feature.

Highland Speedway Rained Out.... to be run July 01 in place of Morgan County Speedway

UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals : Week 1 Wrapup

June 13, 2009 — The first week of the 22nd edition of the UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals “Hell Tour” has been everything fans could want: Exciting features on high-banked bullrings with some of the greatest Dirt Late Model drivers who have ever raced on dirt.

Weather Wins on Tuesday: The race scheduled to run today (Tuesday, June 16) at Highland Speedway has been rained out, and will replace the event originally scheduled to run on July 1 at Morgan County Speedway. The Hell Tour will continue on Wednesday, June 17, at Belle Clair Speedway in Belleville, Ill.

On Track: Over the past two UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals, Dennis Erb has been the tour's image of consistency that has resulted in his back to back championships on the month-long “Hell Tour”. Last year Erb finished out of the Top 10 only once as a result of a broken oil cooler, and he still salvaged a 12th place finish. Early in this year's tour it seems as if the native of Carpentersville, Ill., native is using the same motivation and consistency.

“We started this deal and were real excited because you have a bunch of tracks you run really well at close to home,” commented Erb. “We've had our stuff pretty good here so far.” Indeed Erb has definitely been on his game so far capturing one win at Quad City, as well as a runner up finish at the tour's opener at Brownstown Speedway which has him sitting 2nd in Summer Nationals points only seven markers back of Kevin Weaver of Gibson City, IL.

Erb will admit it's tough to stay focused on the overall goal of winning a “Hell Tour” with all of its distractions. “You kind of lose your focus when you're sitting around with everyone arguing,” said Erb.

At the same time, Erb also realizes that the Summer Nationals is a test over 27 days instead a single night, and how important it is to prepare. “When you run this deal for a whole month anything can happen,” he said. “I've always said if we stay up towards the front we can get some more wins out of this deal, and if we do that we'll be alright.”

Stomping Grounds: In 2005, a young standout from Moweaqua, Ill., blistered the Midwest during the Summer Nationals tour, capturing his first title with a tour record 15 wins. That young driver was Shannon Babb, and much to the anticipation of fans across the Midwest, Babb has returned somewhat to his roots running in the first week events during the 22nd edition of the Summer Nationals Tour.

“I like this Midwest racing,” Babb said. “I always have enjoyed these little bullrings.” Babb who claimed titles in 2005 and 2006 during the Hell Tour has recently run with the World of Outlaws Late Model Series where he had already captured a win early this year at Battleground Speedway in Texas.

Although life on the road with the premier Dirt Late Model touring series is tough, Babb also knows what the Summer Nationals tour is no cake walk in comparison.

“It's definitely a little tougher racing with beating and banging,” said Babb. “But that's how I grew up and learned to race.”

With Babb's future plans on the tour still being somewhat of a mystery, fans and drivers alike surely know what the young driver is capable of on a tour where everyone knows to expect the unexpected.

New Faces: The lure of racing night after night for a month is definitely an intriguing concept for any professional racer. Such is the case during the 2009 edition of the tour as many drivers have decided to attempt to follow the UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals. Scott James, Terry Casey and Justin Ratliff are all relatively new to the UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals tour, but all share excitement when considering the task ahead.

“It's really fun,” said Casey, who registered a Top 15 performance in the 2007 tour while racing a few select events. “These guys are a lot of fun to race with, its good ol' boys racing.”

Ratliff, a Kentucky native, who at 22 already has seven years of racing under his belt, meets a month of racing on the road as a thrilling prospect. “Yeah it's a lot of racing in 30 days so it's a little crazy,” he said. “You just have to go out there do your best.”

James, who's affectionately known by his fans as the “Silver Shark”, suggests a racer can prepare somewhat for a grueling month of racing. “Speedweeks in Florida can prepare you a little bit,” James said. “The big difference is you're traveling every night so you have your stuff tied down and be ready to go racing.”

James is thankful to be able to race for a living, but realizes that a month on the road for a racer can be more difficult that what he encounters on the track. “Most people go to work every day and there's a lot of people that would like to be doing what we're doing out here,” he said. “The only thing I don't like is that my wife can't be with me every night.”

What to watch for: This week the UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals tour features tracks of every type as well as a strong local contingent of UMP DIRTcar Late Model competition. The first two stops feature quarter-mile Highland Speedway as well as fifth-mile Belle Clair Speedway, which in 2008 produced a first-time “Hell Tour” winner in Will Vaught of Crane, Mo. Other tracks include a 3/8-mile Charleston Speedway that leads into a trifecta of banked quarter mile action to round out the week with Farmer City Speedway in Illinois, Clarksville Speedway in Tennessee, and Tri-State Speedway in Indiana.

Points Update: The 2009 UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals tour will allow drivers the opportunity to throw out their worst performance on the tour no matter how many starts they make over the course of the month-long series. This creates a slim safety net for any competitor who might have an off-night during the grueling schedule.

UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Night 4: Erb Slides to Quad City Win
Reigning UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Champion Gets First Win of 2009 Tour

East Moline, IL — June 13, 2009 — Dennis Erb Jr. showed fans on Sunday night the reason that he's been crowned the UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Champion for two years in a row.

A model of consistency and patience throughout, Erb stalked second starting Ryan Unzicker for 18 laps before making his move under the El Paso, IL driver on the 19th circuit. “I had good runs coming off the corners, and I knew there was a mark if I hit it I could get by him.” commented Erb. “From there it was just about staying smooth and not messing up.”

Unzicker settled into the second position holding off 2008 Quad City winner Randy Korte in the closing laps securing his second runner up finish in as many nights. “We're just trying to do the same stuff every night and get better,” analyzed Unzicker. “This is why we do the series, you can go night to night and build yourself as a racer and if we keep sticking our nose in there a win will come.”

Korte, who charged from the last row of his heat race to capture second, worked around pole sitter Kevin Weaver early and set his sights on the lead duo of Erb and Unzicker but fell just shy as the checkered flag fell. “After awhile you just could be as fast as the guys who would run the top,” remarked Korte. “You could get next to them off the corners but couldn't clear them down the straights.”

Heat race action saw Unzicker hold of Jason Feger and Shannon Babb to claim the first heat while Weaver owned heat 2 and subsequently drew the pole for the Summer Nationals feature event. Heat 3 saw local Illinois driver Tim Lance charge through the field and hold off Terry Casey to claim victory while eventual winner Erb lead every lap of heat 4.

31 cars attempted qualifying time trials at the tight ¼ mile oval in East Moline, IL. UMP DIRTcar Late Model drivers qualified in four groups with the fastest of each earning a top spot in their respective heat race. An all Illinois cast dominated qualifying time trials at Quad City with Shannon Babb, Wes Steidinger, local star Mike Murphy, and Dennis Erb all claiming their group's top honors.

UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Night 3: Eric Smith Powers to Kamp Motor Speedway Win
Bloomington, IL driver gets biggest win of his career

Eric Smith is no stranger to racing on a big stage but may have never experienced a win like what he earned Friday night at Kamp Motor Speedway in Boswell, IN.

“We've always been pretty good here,” said an ecstatic Smith after his win. “But to actually win a $10,000 to win show, it's the biggest race I've ever won.”

Smith used a heat race win to secure the pole starting position via a redraw but he had his work cut out for him. Rising star Brandon Sheppard jumped out to lead the field the initial six circuits before Smith made his move low on Sheppard to take the lead. “I thought maybe when I jumped the cushion a couple times that I broke a break line,” explained Smith. “When I pumped the breaks they'd work a little but, I couldn't use them to get in the corner.”

Smith was chased to the line by El Paso,IL pilot and Summer Nationals regular Ryan Unzicker who made a late charge after battling with third place finisher Terry Casey.

“I couldn't tell if Ryan was getting close at the end,” said Smith. “I tried to run hard the whole time but running on the cushion, it will wear you out.”

A former track champion at nearby Farmer City Raceway, Unzicker was looking to make the final few laps very interesting for the Kamp Motor Speedway crowd. "I was expecting him (Smith) to go high and I was going to jump down to the bottom,” remarked the 27 year old Unzicker. I went to the top and I think I overcorrected myself.”

“If I wouldn't have jumped the cushion it would have been a very exciting end to the race,” Unzicker said.

Wisconsin native Terry Casey rounded out the podium at Kamp Motor Speedway. Casey, a driver known to fans as “Mr. Excitement” definitely lived up to his moniker on a very fast track but felt fortunate at the end of the night to be where he was due to mechanical issues. “I lost my brakes after the first caution,” said Casey, who swerved to avoid Smith and Unzicker under the first caution. “I thought I did ok without any brakes,” joked Casey.

44 UMP DIRTcar Late Models entered through the pit gates of the 3/8th mile oval Saturday night. Group qualifying quick times were posted by eventual third place finisher Terry Casey, Towanda, IL pilot Donny Walden, as well as two second generation drivers in Brandon Sheppard, and Frank Heckenast Jr.

The pole was the lucky place to be as heat race action saw all but one group fast timer claim their heat race win with eventual winner Smith capturing heat two over Walden. Joey Janowski and JR Hotovy both claimed spots in the night's A-Main event with consolation finishes. Dan Walden, Ted Loomis, and Wes Steidinger all used provisionals to start the A-Main.

UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Night 2: Moyer Masters Kankakee County Speedway
Batesville driver trumps 50 other competitors in front of packed house

Kankakee, IL — June 12, 2009 — Billy Moyer put on another clinic that he's so well known for on Friday night at Kankakee County Speedway.

The Batesville, Ark., legend started the 40 Lap main event from the pole and quickly shot to the lead ahead of Matt Miller and Dennis Erb Jr. “Car was real good tonight,” said Moyer. “We set up to run the bottom and pretty much hit it right on tonight.”

Moyer's main challenge was from Miller, who on lap 15 nosed out Moyer at the line. On the next circuit, Moyer was back out front, and with 10 to go had extended his lead to nearly 4 seconds.

“I saw him out there, but I knew we were all on the same tires,” remarked the Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame driver. “I thought he was going to use his tires out there a little more. I was going to let him do his deal and if he got me, he got me.”

Miller settled for 2nd place after claiming a heat race win earlier in the evening. “I knew Billy wasn't coming off the bottom and I knew he wasn't going to make a mistake,” said Miller. “When I passed him that's about all I had. The harder I drove it the slower I got so I had to settle myself down.”

Brian Birkhofer rebounded from a night gone awry to capture a third-place finish behind Moyer and Miller. “Right place at the right time,” said Birkhofer, of Muscatine, Iowa, in reference to gaining positions after contact relegated Dennis Erb Jr. and Scott James to the tail of the field.

“I didn't really feel stellar but I thought if I could hang out and not make a mistake I could run top 5,” said Birkhofer. “I had to be at the top, the problem was you could only be as fast as the person in front of you.”

51 UMP DIRTcar Super Late Models took qualifying time trials at Kankakee County Speedway. Five sets of qualifying time trials saw Ohio native Matt Miller, night one winner Jeep Van Wormer, home state driver Ryan Unzicker, Scott James, and track standout Aaron Ricketts capture quick time for their respective groups.

Matt Miller outdueled Brian Birkhofer to win heat race while in Heat 2 Dennis Erb Jr. showed packed grandstands why he's won back to back UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals crowns as he slipped past Jeep Van Wormer in the heats closing laps to take the win.

Billy Moyer started third in Heat 3 and quickly powered his way into the lead down the Kankakee backstretch to claim the heat race win over Illinois drivers Ryan Unzicker and Kevin Weaver. Scott James never took a second glance at the Heat 4 contenders as he captured his heat race in dominant fashion. Will Vaught used his row one starting position in Heat 5 to hold off UMP DIRTcar hotshoe Jason Feger and former UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Champion Shannon Babb.

Next up for “The Hell Tour” is the super fast Kamp Motor Speedway in Boswell,IN Saturday June 13th where the best UMP DIRTcar Late Model drivers will once again wage war on the dirt for a cool $10,000 top prize.

UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Night 1: Jeep Van Wormer Blisters Brownstown
Pinconning, Mich., star opens “Hell Tour” with a victory in Indiana

Brownstown, Ind. — June 11, 2009 — To say Jeep Van Wormer was happy with his win during the opening night of the 22nd UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals on Thursday night is an understatement.

The popular Michigan native kicked off The Hell Tour at quarter-mile Brownstown Speedway by holding off several of Dirt Late Model racing's toughest racers to pick up the checkered flag.

“It just feels good to go out there and get a win back under our belt after starting out really well at the beginning of the year,” said Van Wormer, who topped a 44-car field. “I can't say enough about my crew chief, Joe, and how the crew did tonight. We're just totally pumped.”

Van Wormer withstood spirited charges from a stout field of UMP DIRTcar Late Model competitors throughout the 40-lap contest. However, runner-up Brian Birkhofer, who has been strong all season, was light at the scales in the post-race inspection, dropping him off the podium. That moved defending Hell Tour champion Dennis Erb Jr. to second with 2008 World of Outlaws Late Model Series Champion Darrell Lanigan rounding out the Top 3.

“Birkhofer has been untouchable lately, so to go and beat him really jumpstarts our confidence,” an enthusiastic Van Wormer said before Birkhofer was disqualified. “It feels pretty good.”

A familiar face to UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals competition positioned himself well for a title defense. Two-time and defending Summer Nationals champion Erb climbed from a ninth-place starting spot to third within the first four laps of competition, eventually being credited with the runner-up position.

“If there would have been a little more traction down there — on the low side of the track — I think we would have been good but, a lot of people were running the bottom and burned it up,” Erb said.

Erb knows as well that UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals championships are not earned in one night. “We're pretty prepared,” Erb said. “We've been trying things out earlier in the year so hopefully things will go smooth for us and we'll be there at the end.”

Forty-four UMP DIRTcar Late Models invaded the Jackson County Fair Grounds to kick off the 22nd UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Tour.

Group qualifying saw home state driver Chad Stapleton, former UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Champion Kevin Weaver, Muscatine, Iowa, driver Brian Birkhofer, and Illinois standout Rodney Melvin earn quick time honors for their respective groups.

Heat Races were captured by Billy Moyer, eventual winner Jeep VanWormer, Brian Birkhofer and Rodney Melvin.

GRAYVILLE, IL – June 11, 2009 – Contingency awards totaling nearly $20,000 have been posted for the UMP DIRTcar Racing Summer Nationals, the grueling month-long Super Late Model tour of the Midwest that kicks off tonight (Thurs., June 11) at Brownstown (Ind.) Speedway.

More than a half-dozen companies are listed as supporters of the aptly-named ‘Hell Tour,' which visits 27 tracks over a 31-day period in a true test of man and machine.

“We're appreciative of all the companies that are part of the UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals,” said UMP DIRTcar Racing director Sam Driggers. “It's the backing of these sponsors that makes the Summer Nationals more attractive to the racers and allows us to continue building the ‘Hell Tour' into one of the country's most unique and exciting Super Late Model series.”

Among the major backers of the Summer Nationals is VP Racing Fuels, the Official Racing Fuel of DIRTcar Racing. VP will have a big presence throughout the series, servicing the racers and offering a total of $150 in product certificates to three A-Main starters each night.

VP Racing Fuels will have a fuel truck at almost every Summer Nationals event. VP representatives will pour VP113, Late Model Plus, M1 methanol and other VP products at each track from the time the pit gates officially open until at least the conclusion of Super Late Model heat races.

In addition, VP Racing Fuels has posted product certificates in the sum of $75 for the fifth-place finisher, $50 for the 10th-place finisher and $25 for the 15th-place finisher in each Summer Nationals A-Main. Teams must use VP Racing Fuel and display a VP decal to be eligible for the certificates, which can be redeemed each night at the track or at VP Regional Distribution Centers in Newark, Del.; Barnett, Ga.; Terre Haute, Ind.; and San Antonio, Texas.

Quarter Master Racing Clutches & Driveline Components will also reward three drivers with product certificates at each Summer Nationals event. The Lake Zurich, Ill.-based firm will provide certificates worth $100 to the winner, $50 to the fifth-place finisher and $25 to the 10th-place finisher in each A-Main, contingent upon the display of a Quarter Master decal.

Other contingency awards requiring the mandatory display of company decals have been posted by ASI Racewear, the Official Apparel Company of UMP DIRTcar Racing ($50 certificate for the Hard Charger Award winner and $50 certificate for the first alternate who does not make the A-Main each night); Integra Shocks ($50 certificate to overall fast qualifier at each track); and Wrisco Aluminum (three sheets of aluminum to each A-Main winner).

Meanwhile, Hoosier Racing Tires (Official Racing Tires of UMP DIRTcar Racing) and the University of Northwestern Ohio (UNOH) are supporting the Summer Nationals with points-fund contributions and thus decals of both sponsors must be displayed by tour competitors.

Annual UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals ‘Hell Tour’
Showcases 27 Dirt Late Model Races in 31 Days

ORLANDO, FL — Dec. 12, 2008 — The 21st annual UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals tour is the most grueling month in any form of motorsports. The 2009 series — also known as the “Hell Tour” — is one of the most challenging in history with 27 Super Dirt Late Model races in 31 days. More than anything, the schedule released this week at the Performance Racing Industry Trade Show is a matter of survival, a true reality show.

The Summer Nationals is a journey that pits man and his machine against the best dirt tracks in the Midwest. It’s the series that helped to launch the legendary careers of Billy Moyer and Scott Bloomquist, as well as current World of Outlaws Late Model Series star Shannon Babb.

“Running the Summer Nationals tour is one of the toughest things a Dirt Late Model team can attempt,” said UMP DIRTcar Racing Director Sam Driggers. “To accomplish the feat, to survive to finale at Oakshade, is an accomplishment that won’t be forgotten. Whether it’s the racers, the officials or the fans, the tour showcases everything that’s great about dirt track racing.”

The month of hell kicks off June 11 at Indiana’s Brownstown Speedway. It winds through Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois, Tennessee and Missouri before reaching the championship night on July 11 with the 12th Annual “Birthday Race” at Oakshade Raceway in Wauseon, Ohio.

Among the tracks visited along the 4,500 miles on this year’s circuit are new and familiar.  Farmer City Raceway and Macon Speedway, which have each featured an amazing 21 Summer Nationals races since 1988, are again on this year’s slate.

Three new dates also tag this year’s UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals tour. For the first time, the “Hell Tour” will invade Clay Hill Motorsports Park, Shepp Speedway and Waynesfield Motorsports Park.

“There are still tracks out there that really want a date, but we’ve found that this is about as far as anyone can go for a month straight,” Driggers said.

Illinois leads the way with 18 events on the schedule, followed by three events in Indiana, two events in Ohio and Tennessee and one each in Missouri and Kentucky.

Two-time and defending UMP DIRTcar Super Late Model and Summer Nationals champion Dennis Erb Jr., of Carpentersville, Ill., is expected to defend his title. Erb’s attempt at the “three-peat” won’t be easy, facing not only the grueling schedule but also tough drivers like Jason Feger, of Bloomington, Ill.; Wes Steidinger, of Fairbury, Ill.; and Jeep Van Wormer of Pinconning, Mich.
