New KISS Champions Helmet Design Released

December 1, 2007 –- One of the new efforts for the 2007 edition of the King of Indiana Sprint Series (KISS) was the introduction of the KISS Championship Helmet.  Unfortunately, because of issues outside the control of the KISS promoters, the helmet has not been completed and was not presented to the 2007 Champion, Jon Stanbrough.  KISS has established a sponsorship relationship with a new helmet designer and a new KISS Championship Helmet is in progress.  The new design, by New York artist Noah Ennis of Eagle Graphix Design is included with this release and is also available on the KISS website ( www.kissracing.com).  Details of the helmet presentation will be announced when they are finalized.

This effort is sponsored by Sprint Car & Midget Magazine, Simpson Performance Products and Eagle Graphix Design.  The promoters of the racing facilities that conduct the KISS series thank each of them for their efforts in obtaining a second helmet and ensuring this unique award is presented to the 2007 Champion as originally announced.

July 10, 2007 –- The 2007 King of Indiana Sprint Series didn't simply end with a competitive race, or a satisfying conclusion.  No, it ended with an explosion of star shells, roman candles and thunder-boomers.  The KISS racers gave a textbook demonstration of great old school sprint car racing as the series’ biggest campaign wrapped up with one of the most electrifying events of the year.  Some of the Tri-State Speedway spectators from that night still haven’t sat down.

Through the first four races on the ’07 KISS schedule, Jon Stanbrough was undefeated.  Four green flags, four checkered flags and four photos of Stanbrough with the trophy.  Then his luck went south for a short time as he was wrecked by other hapless cars in heats and the main events alike.  Billy Puterbaugh Jr. and Shane Cottle toured victory lane while Stanbrough collected last, and within slapping distance of last, and what had appeared to be a jolly cake-walk turned into, “Hey! What’s going on here?”

When the next two events were canceled (one by rain), the whole series suddenly boiled down to one last 30-lap hurrah.  Stanbrough continued to hold the point lead, but Shane Hollingsworth was still in the game.  Just as important, a yellow, black and white sprinter had towed in from Missouri to chase the KISS money, too - not the points, just the money.

The way it unfolded and because in draw racing anyone can ultimately start anywhere, Stanbrough stepped smartly into the lead from his front row lineup and began to drive away from the field…most of the field.  A couple of spots back, the Missourian, Daron Clayton was on a mission.  He drives every race like he’s on a mission.  His lines are unorthodox as he churns the clay in areas of the track where even the farm implements don’t often tread.  High into the turns, then slicing across the middle and all the way out to the wall, the momentum carrying his right rear just inches from the concrete before he rockets down the straightaway.  There are other versions of the same tune, depending on traffic and the track conditions, but each produces the same result and has the audience holding their breaths.

Clayton ate up the ground between himself and Stanbrough quickly.  Once he caught the white and black Fox Brothers machine, he sparred for a couple of laps before making the pass.  But this was just an opening gambit and Stanbrough was back in front in turn three.  Clayton didn’t blink, and retook the lead before the flagstand.  This was the script for most of the next twenty laps.  Stanbrough, the 20-year veteran, measured the yellow and black car and tried high, and then low without progress.

Stanbrough is a master of the art of the slide-job, which has nothing at all to do with what NASCAR does on television, and the oval was conducive to great racing.  Stanbrough would run into the turn harder on the bottom and slide up in front of Clayton in the center.  But Clayton was ready and drove back underneath and they raced off the turn wheel-to-wheel.  More than once, Clayton made better time in the turn and instead of sliding up in front, it appeared that Stanbrough was aimed right at the young driver.  Each time Clayton kept his foot hard on the floor and Stanbrough would have to turn his nose down as he slowed his slide and ready for another attack in the next turn.

This nose-to-nose racing continued while they fought through packs of slower cars.  Stanbrough would make a gritty pass and lead off turn two, then Clayton would re-pass in four, then they would do it again.  A couple of late race cautions did little more than let them rip a tear-off and take a deep breath.  On the last lap, Stanbrough tried a low run in turn one, but didn’t quite have the mustard that Clayton had a little higher on the track and they finished just inches apart.

“Stanbrough definitely made me drive my butt off out there.  He’s the best guy out right now and to beat him I think we proved something tonight,” Clayton said later.  Then he explained, “I could just cut back under him real easy down in the moisture coming off the bottom.  I wish he would have slide jobbed me every lap because it would have made my job a lot easier than trying to guess whether he was going to try me or not.”

Minutes later, Stanbrough told the crowd that it sucked from where he sat.  No champion takes enjoyment from finishing second.  But in the coolness of his hauler, he talked about the duel, “We were a little bit too tight coming off and there was nothing I could do.  I was hoping the car would loosen up a little bit, but the car never loosened up for me.  Brad and Steve (Fox) did a hell of a job, but we thought the race track would go away a little more than what it did.  But it didn’t.  If it had loosened up getting off the corner I might have gotten in there on it and been able to drive off the corner in front of him.  I know it was a good show for the fans - but I’m disappointed I didn’t get the win.”

Eleven KISS feature race wins and three championships puts Stanbrough in a group of one, far ahead of anyone else competing in the series.  Like most top racers, Jon never lets the forest get in the way of seeing the trees.  “I never really set out to win championships, I just wanted to win races.  If we won races, then the championships would come.  Now that we’ve done it three times, those championships are more special to me than what I ever set out to accomplish.”

Stanbrough Unbeaten in KISS

July 1, 2007 –- The 2007 King of Indiana Sprint Series will reach a conclusion on Sunday, July 8 at Haubstadt, Indiana’s Tri-State Speedway.  The race is a head-to-head showdown between KISS racers and the Midwest Sprint Car Series on the MSCS home turf.  It will be the first KISS event on the southwestern Indiana oval since Justin Marvel won there during the series’ inaugural season in 2001.

With four KISS feature wins this season, two-time champion Jon Stanbrough continues to write the KISS record book.  Not only does he have the most series victories (11), he is the only driver with multiple series titles.  Stanbrough enters the finale with a 45-point advantage over Shane Hollingsworth, which will be difficult to overcome unless disaster strikes the Fox Brothers team again.  While he was unbeaten at Gas City, North Vernon, Lawrenceburg and Bloomington, Jon was caught up in a first lap wreck at Putnamville, then taken out by a lapped car while leading handily at Kokomo.  Meanwhile, Hollingsworth has five top-10 finishes, but failed to transfer to the main event at Bloomington.  Brady Short, sitting third in the points, still has a mathematical shot at the title if Stanbrough fails to start Sunday’s 30-lap feature race.

There will be a lot at stake on Sunday.  Among his 17 overall feature wins this season, Stanbrough won the two most recent MSCS events, including the 50th Anniversary Race at Tri-State.  Kyle Cummins currently leads the points, while both Stanbrough and Hollingsworth are among the MSCS top-10.

Sunday’s grand finale at Tri-State Speedway will begin with hot laps at 6:30, and racing at 7:30.  Adult admission is $15, students (13 - 18) $10, children 12 and younger are admitted free.   The quarter mile oval is located just north of Evansville on US Highway 41 at Haubstadt.

With a $2,500 check for the winner at nearly every race, a victory in a KISS feature pays significantly more than a team will earn for regular Friday and Saturday night races.  Each starter in the main event will also earn at least $250.  Sponsorship from Indiana Stone Works has boosted the B-Main starting money to $100 for drivers not transferring to the A feature.  The point fund pays $1,400 to the champion, $1,000 for second place, followed by $700 (third), $600 (fourth) and $500 (fifth).

The 2007 titlist will also receive the special King of Indiana Sprint Series Champion’s Helmet.  This award is sponsored by Sprint Car & Midget Magazine and Simpson Performance Products, and will include a unique KISS design by RockStar Paint, which can be seen at http://www.kissracing.com/documents/KISSHelmetDesign1.pdf.

The KISS point standings going into the final race: 1. Jon Stanbrough 676, 2. Shane Hollingsworth 631, 3. Brady Short 562, 4. Hunter Schuerenberg 496, 5. Mat Neely 426, 6. Cole Whitt 413, 7. AJ Anderson 387, 8. Jeff Bland Jr. 362, 9. Jake Martens 281, 10. Ted Hines 254

June 24, 2007 –- The 2007 King of Indiana Sprint Series (KISS) champion will have some unique headgear to show off following the final checkered flag at Tri-State Speedway on July 8.  In addition to the champion’s trophy and the point fund, the King will be crowned with the custom-designed KISS Champion’s Helmet.  The helmet design, created by RockStar Paint, is simple yet distinctive, incorporating the state flag and an outline of the Hoosier state displaying the locations of all of the participating tracks.

Through the efforts of Sprint Car & Midget Magazine, Simpson Performance Products and RockStar Paint, the helmet isn’t intended to gather dust on a royal shelf, but as top-of-the-line safetywear, it will become highly visible every-race wear for the 2007 series champion.  RockStar’s Michael Jones created the special one-of-a-kind design in his Spirit Lake, Iowa, studio.  Artwork showing the helmet design is available on the KISS website (www.kissracing.com).

Two rounds of the 2007 KISS series remain, the special Independence Day celebration at the Terre Haute Action Track on Saturday, June 30.  The grand finale, crowning the 2007 King of Indiana Sprints Series, will feature a KISS vs. Midwest Sprint Car Series battle at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt on Sunday, July 8.  Two-time and defending King of Indiana Jon Stanbrough is leading the series, with Shane Hollingsworth trailing by 45 points.  Brady Short is 69 points further back.

June 22, 2007 –- With just three events remaining in the pursuit of the 2007 King of Indiana Sprint Series championship, the series returns to action at Paragon Speedway Saturday night.  At stake, not only the $2,500 for winning Saturday’s feature, also points toward the largest point purse in KISS history and the KISS Champion’s Helmet.

Jon Stanbrough claimed four of the previous KISS events this season, with Billy Puterbaugh and Shane Cottle winning the most recent races, at Lincoln Park Speedway and Kokomo Speedway.  Stanbrough continues to lead the standings in his quest to become the only three-time King, however his advantage has narrowed to just 45 points.

Two of the four previous KISS races at Paragon Speedway were won by Kevin Briscoe, with Matt Westfall and Kent Christian capturing the other two.  However Stanbrough has a history of victories in big races at the oval.  Saturday’s grandstand admission at Paragon will be $15 and pit passes are $30.  The grandstand gates open at 5 pm, with hot laps at 6 and racing at 7:30 pm.  The program will include street stocks, bombers and pure stocks.  Additional information is available at www.paragonspeedway.com.

June 17, 2007 –- Shane Cottle returned to a King of Indiana Sprint Series victory lane after a two-year absence with a hard fought, old school win at Kokomo Speedway Sunday.  Cottle dominated the second half of the 30-lap KISS event, leading Dave Darland to the checkers by three seconds, as AJ Anderson, Dustin Smith and Dustin Morgan also ran in the top five.

Driving Monte Edison’s Crume-Evans Insurance-sponsored Chalk, Cottle moved quickly to the front from his eighth starting slot.  But the first half of the race was filled with twists and turns before, before Cottle took command.

Again, it was Jon Stanbrough, who has four KISS wins this year, playing a key role in the opening laps.  From his third starting position, Stanbrough jumped into the lead in the first as the front row starters slid high, opening the door.  After leading the first nine circuits, Stanbrough was already lapping slower cars when one of them, Brett Burdette, glanced off the inside berm in turn four and shot sharply across the track, pinching Stanbrough against the wall.  Both cars flipped at the head of the mainstretch.  After quick repairs to the Fox Brothers machine in the pits, Stanbrough returned for the restart, but pulled off before the green with a broken brake rotor.

This handed the lead to young Chad Boat, with Cottle and Anderson on his tail.  Boat led convincingly until a lap 15 caution, when Brady Short slid into the first turn wall.  One the restart, Boat began trailing a plume of smoke, but the yellow was thrown quickly and the field realigned.  This time there was a false start and when Boat slowed suddenly, Cottle climbed over his right rear tire and was in turn run over by Jesse Hockett, in third.  The next time around, Boat slowed and rolled into the infield as the field came to the green flag, with a broken fitting on the oil tank.

Although he now had a severely bent right front shock, Cottle quickly built a straightaway lead as Hockett, Anderson, Smith and Jonathan Vennard fought for second.  But after starting on the last row, Darland had been steadily advancing to the front.  When Chris Gentry brought the second red flag of the event for his tumble off the turn two wall on lap 23, Darland was up to fourth.  While Cottle ran a straightaway in front, Darland battled his way into second with two laps to go, which is how they finished.

Afterward, Cottle explained that they had just found and fixed a problem in their shock package, and his first KISS win since 2004 was a boost for the team.  Then he added, “I wish Stanbrough wouldn’t have wrecked, I would have liked to race with him tonight.”

Darland came over to offer his congratulations and they examined the bent front shock.  When Darland said that it was good it didn’t break off, Cottle replied, “Yeah, we might have landed out in the grain bin.”  It was one of those nights.

Stanbrough continues to hold the point lead as KISS turns into the final leg of the 2007 series with a critical race at Paragon Speedway next Saturday, June 23.  The series will then begin their Independence Day celebrating at the Terre Haute Action Track on Saturday, June 30.  The 2007 King of Indiana Sprints will then be crowned at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt on Sunday, July 8.

June 16, 2007 –- Billy Puterbaugh Jr. claimed the first King of Indiana Sprint Series victory of his career on a wild and crazy night at Putnamville’s Lincoln Park Speedway.  It was a night when the probative favorite didn’t complete a lap of the feature and the fastest car left the track on the back of a wrecker.  But the winner was the old school favorite who had already won twice at Lincoln Park this year, leads the track’s point standings and his crew chief is also his mother.

“This means a lot, “ Puterbaugh said afterwards.  “We’ve been racing sprint cars for 13 years and I’ve never won a KISS race.  At a track that I’ve run my whole life, this means a lot.”

Puterbaugh led twice for 13 laps, as Shane Hollingsworth finished second, followed by Jeff Bland Jr., Danny Holtsclaw and Dickie Gaines.

After sweeping the previous four KISS events this year, Jon Stanbrough’s night began badly.   Before he completed the first lap in the second heat race, a car spun in the middle of the pack and collected four other machines.  Among them were Chris Gentry, who somersaulted twice, and Stanbrough.  Before the semi, Steve and Brad Fox replaced the front clip, the tail tank and many other pieces between the two on Stanbrough’s DRC.

After a run from 11th to third in the semi, Stanbrough lined up 18th for the feature.  This time Andrew Prather spun in the second turn on the opening lap and five other cars were caught up including Stanbrough, Hunter Schuerenberg, Cole Whitt, Danny Williams Jr. and Ty Deckard.  Stanbrough ricocheted off another machine and into the tractor tire marking the inside of the track, breaking the left front suspension.  Schuerenberg had a bent axle and Deckard was damaged as well, but the track’s rules prohibited any repairs.

Hollingsworth grabbed the lead on the first lap with Holtsclaw, Puterbaugh, Robbie Rice and Daron Clayton close behind.  But Clayton didn’t stay in line.  Taking to the cushion at both ends, he was second by lap 3 and rocketed around Hollingsworth on the next circuit.  While Puterbaugh and Hollingsworth fought for second, Clayton built more than a straightaway-length lead.  Then, Whitt and Williams tangled in turn one, bringing the caution on lap 16.

On the restart, Clayton slid through the cushion in turn one, giving the lead to Puterbaugh.  He hustled back on the track in fourth spot, then ran over the top of three, falling back further.  Puterbaugh extended a comfortable lead while Clayton began a charge back to the front.  Blazing across the tops of the turns at both ends, he passed cars wherever they were and reached third on lap 21.  Three laps later, he drove around Hollingsworth, banging wheels as they came off the second turn, and set his sights on the leader.

Clayton caught Puterbaugh on the 27th circuit and executed a perfect slide-job to take the lead.  He quickly opened a dozen car lengths, but while running hard into the third turn the beadlock broke free of the left rear wheel just as he touched the brakes.  The deflating tire killed the motor and Clayton came to an abrupt stop.

Puterbaugh held on over the final two laps after the restart, for the win.  Bland worked past Hollingsworth on the last lap, but the Trucker’s 24 Hour Service car fought back, barely edging Bland for second.  For the second consecutive night, Bland had earned a third after starting deep in the field.

Puterbaugh noted that a large dirt clod had become wedged under his throttle pedal and he couldn’t get it freed until the first yellow.  Then he was able to get the car hooked up more, the tires to break loose and he could run the cushion a lot harder.  His experience at Lincoln Park played a part in his victory, too, he said, “You kind of know what the track’s going to do and you get in a rhythm.  Your car is already set up and you have a game plan.  I think it was a little bit of an advantage.”

Stanbrough Continues Hot Streak With KISS Win At Bloomington
June 15, 2007 –- Jon Stanbrough continued his old school domination of the King of Indiana Sprint Series with his fourth victory in as many races, this one on Bloomington’s wicked fast quarter mile.  Stanbrough passed Mat Neely on the eighth lap, and lapped all but the first seven finishers on his road to the checkers.  Neely finished second, followed by Larry Bland Jr., Chad Boat and Brady Short.

Drawing for a front row heat race starting slot, Stanbrough won that handily, then drew to start fourth in the 30-lap main.  When pole sitter Chad Boat pushed high in the second turn, he opened the door for Mat Neely to drive into the lead on the opening lap, with Stanbrough on his tail.  Neely built a half-straightaway lead until a pair of cautions bunched the field.

Stanbrough moved up to mid-track and outside Neely on the restart, pulling ahead as they exited turn two.  But Neely battled back, nosing back in front as they exited turn four.  But Stanbrough drove hard into the first turn and pulled cleanly ahead before they reached the backstretch on the next lap.  He steadily built his advantage to a full straightaway by mid-race, and even though he spent the closing laps slicing through traffic, Stanbrough’s Fox Brothers DRC held a six-second lead at the finish.  While many of the top finishers came from the front rows of the grid, Short hustled his Lucas Oil Products Maxim from the last row to fifth.

The victory was Stanbrough’s 16th of the year and eighth consecutive.  He explained that the restart gave him the best opportunity to pass Neely.  “I just rode there for awhile, watching what he was doing and seeing what I could do and he wasn’t making any mistakes on the bottom. I thought I needed to do something while I was close to him and not let him get out away from me again and have to try to run him down.”

“I knew that it was going to be hard to get by somebody where I passed him because there was a lot of moisture on the bottom.  They were going to wear it out, but I just didn’t feel like I should wait until they wore it out.  I thought on that restart it would be a good opportunity to make my move.”

Neely admitted that his car got loose as the race progressed and that the wheel he wanted to run on the right rear had been damaged in a flip the night before.  Then he added, “I knew Jon would be back there, he comes on about lap 15 or 20.  He’s so good, so smooth, I just fell short.”

June 5, 2007 –- In the previous six editions of the King of Indiana Sprint Series (KISS), five different Kings have been crowned.  Only Jon Stanbrough has had multiple reigns.  The 9-race 2007 series is one-third over and Stanbrough has visited victory lane three times.  Do the math: nine from three, carry the two, err, three races, three wins, 100%, as in sweep.  It’s elementary, as in old school.

However there are more than a hundred non-winged sprint cars in the state of Indiana and the majority of the drivers of those cars do not think the wheelman of the Fox Brothers’ DRC will sweep.  Most of them think that on at least one night, he will be beaten and that they can do it.

Three more races, three more opportunities.  On Friday, June 15th, the KISS series unloads at Bloomington Speedway.  On Saturday the 16th, KISS will headline at Lincoln Park Speedway.  And Sunday, June 17th, the KISS racers take to Kokomo Speedway.  Of Stanbrough’s ten victories this season, half have been on the clay ovals in Bloomington and Kokomo.  Those are the facts.

Bloomington’s grandstands will open at 5:30 on Friday, June 15th, with hot laps at 6:30 and racing an hour later.  General admission for every KISS race this year is $15, with pit passes at $30.  At Bloomington, youngsters 12 and under are admitted free with an adult.  The racing program will include UMP Modifieds and Indiana Super Stocks.  Visit www.bloomingtonspeedway.com for more information.

Stanbrough’s exploits have given the two-time King a 25-point margin over Brady Short, and 42 points more than Shane Hollingsworth.  They are the only drivers to have started the feature races at Gas City, North Vernon and Lawrenceburg.  But with six events remaining, there is still a lot of racing until the coronation.

May 31, 2007 –- When the 2007 King of Indiana Sprint Series (KISS) pushes off for a full weekend of racing beginning at Bloomington Speedway on Friday, June 15, several questions will beg to be answered.  For example, can Jon Stanbrough sweep all nine races of this year’s KISS tour?  And, who is going to step up to stop him?

There are three golden opportunities as Lincoln Park Speedway follows on Saturday, June16, and Kokomo Speedway on Sunday.  Each will provide 30 laps of old school wheel-to-wheel racing to top Stanbrough, who has swept the first events on the schedule.  Each will pay $2,500 to win and count toward this year’s King of Indiana sprint car championship.

May 28, 2007 –- The reigning King of Indiana, Jon Stanbrough captured his third KISS Series feature victory of the year, leading all but the first five laps at Lawrenceburg Speedway on Saturday.  With the win, Stanbrough extended his point lead to 35 over Brady Short, who finished third, behind Mat Neely.

After claiming his heat race, A.J. Anderson was the early leader of the 30-lap main event, before Stanbrough took over in the Fox Brothers’ DRC.  Anderson held on for fourth place, with Shane Hollingsworth finishing fifth.  Heat races were claimed by Neely, Stanbrough, Cole Whitt and Anderson.  Sammy Imel won the C-Main and Joss Moffat took the B-Main.

Heading into the next KISS race, at Bloomington on June 15, Stanbrough tops the KISS standings with 390 points, followed by Short (355), Hollingsworth (328) and Neely (235).

Stanbrough Carries KISS Lead to the ‘Burg
From: Mike O'Leary ([email protected])

May 16, 2007 –- The only two-time King of Indiana will carry a 25-point advantage into “the ‘Burg” when the King of Indiana Sprint Series (KISS) sprint cars convene for another round of old school racing at Lawrenceburg Speedway on Saturday, May 26.  Sweeping the first two events, on the Gas City and North Vernon ovals, Jon Stanbrough leads Brady Short, with Shane Hollingsworth, Robert Ballou and Jake Martens still in striking distance with seven events still ahead.

Since Levi Jones opened USAC’s national sprint car campaign with a victory at Lawrenceburg, Matt Westfall, Chris Windom and Tim Spindler have captured feature race wins at the renowned facility, underscoring the depth of talent that compete there regularly.  Previous KISS winners at Lawrenceburg include Brandon Petty and A.J. Anderson.  The KISS feature will pay $2,500 to win, $250 to start, and with this year’s sponsorship by Indiana Stone Works, $100 to take the green in the B-Main and not transfer to the 30-lap finale.

With Lawrenceburg Speedway’s Budweiser Fan Appreciation Night festivities, the program will include UMP modifieds and UMRA TQ midgets.  General admission is $15 and a pit pass is $30.  Keeping racing affordable for families, kids 6 and under are admitted free, while those 7 – 12 are just $7.  The pit gate opens at 4 pm, the general admission/grandstand gate at 5, with hot laps at 6:20 and racing beginning at 7 pm.  The Speedway is located 1 ½ miles west of I-275 on Rt. 50, just on the Indiana side of the state line from Cincinnati.

Stanbrough Doubles Up With KISS At North Vernon

May 13, 2007 –- Jon Stanbrough continued his run toward a third King of Indiana Sprint Series crown with his second victory of the weekend, at North Vernon’s Twin Cities Raceway Park.  Stanbrough took the race lead on the 13th circuit, after bumping past leader Brady Short.  With more great old school racing, Stanbrough held off a late race charge by Robert Ballou, as Short clawed his way back to a solid third place finish.

Short led Cole Whitt and Stanbrough into the first turn from the pole, and Stanbrough moved into second on the second lap.  Stanbrough challenged for the lead, diving to the bottom as they charged into the first turn, running wheel-to-wheel, looking high and low for an opening, but each time Short came out ahead.  Entering the third turn on the 13th circuit, Short stayed in front of Stanbrough instead of charging across the bottom and Fox Brothers DRC struck the tail of Short’s machine, turning him sideways.  Short saved it, slipping out of the groove as Stanbrough blasted past, but rolled to a stop.

“It was a good race.  Man, I really hated that we got together with Brady,” Stanbrough admitted afterwards.  “He was running down on the bottom and I was trying to get around him on the top and all of a sudden he moved up.  I was committed to the top.  I don’t think he fully got all the way to the top and he got the car really bent out of shape, and I ran it in really hard.  I just got into him.  I wanted them to put him back in the front, I was trying to motion to them to put him back on the front, but they wouldn’t do it.”

Stanbrough was able to build a substantial lead, nearly half a lap at one point, as Short worked his way back through the field.  Restarting fourth, Robert Ballou battled past Shane Hollingsworth and Kyle Cummins for second on lap 22.  While Stanbrough was in lapped traffic, Ballou began to whittle down his lead.

When Neil Shepherd spun on lap 27, Stanbrough quickly built a ten-car length lead on the restart.  But after Hollingsworth spun in the second turn a lap later, Ballou dove inside of Stanbrough in turn one and led into the second turn.  But Stanbrough drove back under Ballou as they charged down the backstretch, retaking the point in turn three.  Short had scrapped back into third and pulled even with Ballou, but couldn’t make the pass before the checkered flag.

In the pits after the race, Stanbrough made his way to the 2B Racing team hauler and briefly spoke with both Short and Scott Benic.   Short explained what had happened, “We just ran in there in the lead and I was trying to be safe so I wouldn’t mess up and get passed.  I knew Stanbrough was running second.  He got in there a little hot, I guess, and hit me the rear and knocked the car out of gear.  You’ll have that.  He came and apologized, he didn’t do it on purpose.”

On the other side of the pit area, a disappointed Ballou sat by his trailer.  He said, “I slid him for the lead on the restart, I got by him and then I did something that I normally wouldn’t have done.   He did what I would have done, just slide the car from the bottom to the middle, and I thought he was going to come all the way up, but wasn’t thinking, and I got blocked by him and that just ended my chance.”

Then he added, “He was quick right through the middle and I just couldn’t get my momentum back to get back to him.  He did a great job and I screwed it up and gave it all away.”

With Friday’s victory in the opening race at Gas City, Stanbrough holds a 25 point advantage over Short, with Hollingsworth third in the standings.

Jon Stanbrough Opens 07 KISS With Gas City Victory

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 12, 2007 –- Jon Stanbrough opened his defense of the King of Indiana Sprint Series Championship with a convincing 30-lap victory at Gas City I-69 Speedway Friday night.  Stanbrough extended his series-leading victory total to eight after taking the lead from Damion Gardner with seven laps remaining.  It wasn’t fancy, just old school racing.  Shane Hollingsworth, Brady Short and Mat Neely trailed Stanbrough and Gardner at the finish.

“It’s nice to come into the deal as the defending champion and have the most wins and be able to start off with a win.  This is definitely big,” Stanbrough allowed after the victory lane celebration.  Even though he is the only two-time winner of the King of Indiana Sprint Series championship, it was his first KISS victory at the Gas City oval.

Driving the Fox Brothers DRC, Stanbrough took the green in seventh, as Mat Neely claimed the early lead from the pole.  On the second circuit, Shane Cottle spun in the first turn bringing out the caution.  Gardner pressed Neely for the lead while Stanbrough passed cars on every section of the track.  On lap 4, he dove under John Paynter for third, and then quickly joined the lead battle.  Gardner held Stanbrough at bay while Neely started to fight a loose car.  On the 19th lap, Gardner worked past Neely in turn 2 and Stanbrough was able to follow a lap later.

This set up a thrilling duel, as Stanbrough worked the whole track, trying to find an opening, while the West Coast sprint car ace warded off each challenge.  They quickly caught a group of tail-enders on lap 22 and Stanbrough dove to the inside of Gardner in the second turn, but a three-car tangle brought out the caution.  Gardner tried to keep his Pace Electronics DRC ahead of Stanbrough on the restart, but when he chose high in turn four, Stanbrough shoved his machine into the bottom groove and drove into the lead before the first turn.  Gardner fought back, pulling even on the next lap, but Stanbrough quickly broke free and opened a half-straightaway lead.  At the checkers, he held a 20-car length advantage.

“Obviously the guys did a good job on the car,” Stanbrough said.  “I was just trying to be patient and get what I could get.  Once I got into second, I knew Damion was going to be tough.  He was moving around, like I was, trying find someplace to be fast.  He moved at the wrong time and I got underneath of him.  He got his nose underneath of me once or twice but once we ran a lap or two, I didn’t see him again.”

Hollingsworth gave the Trucker’s 24-Hour Service machine a good ride from ninth to third, and Dave Darland recovered from a terrible draw to earn seventh after starting 18th.  The victory gives Stanbrough a five-point lead heading into tonight’s event at North Vernon’s Twin Cities Raceway Park.

May 2, 2007 –- The 2007 edition of the King of Indiana Sprint Series (KISS) pushes off under sunny skies on Friday, May 11, at the Gas City I-69 Speedway.  Several decades ago, when almost all racing was regional, a generous purse and prestigious title would attract the heaviest hitters from throughout the area.  With hard-nosed wheel-to-wheel action and a $2,500 winner’s payday on the line, the KISS series has earned a reputation for attracting large fields of top cars and drivers.  Each night promises nothing fancy, just old school racing.

This year’s KISS schedule reflects a bigger challenge for sprint car racers around the Hoosier state as two additional tracks have joined the tour.  While Tri-State Speedway returns for the first time in six years, Twin Cities Raceway Park hosts its first KISS race on May 12, bringing the total to nine nights of old school competition in 2007.

But before heading further down the road, the KISS racers will convene at Gas City’s renowned quarter-mile, just minutes from I-69.  Heading the program will be the only two-time King of Indiana, Jon Stanbrough.  He will face the defending I-69 Speedway sprint car champion A. J. Anderson, current track point leader Billy Puterbaugh Jr., 2002 KISS champion and three-time feature winner Tony Elliott, veterans like Casey Shuman, Brandon Petty, Critter Malone and a pit lane full of standout sprint car racers.  Previous KISS winners at Gas City include Elliott (2001), John Wolfe (2002), J. J. Yeley (2003) and Michael Burthay (2004).

On Saturday, May 12, the KISS campaigners will lineup at the 3/8-mile Twin Cities Raceway Park in North Vernon (please note, all tracks are in INDIANA) for the series’ second round.  While it will be the inaugural KISS event at that facility, the track is recognized as blazing fast and a challenging sprint car venue.

Ticket prices at all KISS races are $15 general admission and $30 pit passes.  The racing program at Gas City includes UMP Modifieds and UMP Street Stocks.  The track opens at 4:00 and racing begins at 7:30.  More information is available at www.gascityi69speedway.com.  On Saturday, the pit gate opens at 3:00, with hot laps at 6:00 and racing at 6:30 at Twin Cities Raceway, crate late models are also on the racing card.  Track information is at www.twincitiesracing.net .

April 17, 2007 –- When the 2007 King of Indiana Sprint Series (KISS) takes the final checkered flag at Tri-State Speedway on July 8, the point winner will be crowned with a unique award, the custom-designed KISS Champion’s Helmet.  Through the efforts of Sprint Car & Midget Magazine, Simpson Performance Products and RockStar Paint, the helmet isn’t intended to gather dust on a royal shelf, but will become highly visible every-race wear for the 2007 series champion.

Sprint Car & Midget Magazine and Simpson Performance Products are teaming to provide the helmet, which will be top-of-the-line in safety and comfort.  RockStar Paint’s Michael Jones is creating the special King of Indiana Sprint Series Champion design in his Spirit Lake, Iowa, studio.  The details of the helmet and artwork will be available on the KISS website (www.kissracing.com) in the near future.

The start of this year’s KISS series is less than a month away as Gas City I-69 Speedway gets the first of two KISS Weekends underway on Friday, May 11.  Then the racers head south, to North Vernon’s Twin Cities Raceway the next night, Saturday, May 12.  Two weeks later, Lawrenceburg Speedway rumbles on Saturday, May 26.  The action stays hot as the second KISS Weekend begins at Bloomington Speedway on Friday, June 15.  With barely enough time to roll through a car wash, the KISS racers push off at Putnamville’s Lincoln Park Speedway on Saturday, June 16.  Then, to round out the weekend, Kokomo Speedway hosts a huge Sunday show on June 17.  Paragon Speedway keeps the wheels rolling a week later, on Saturday, June 23, followed by the Independence Day celebration with KISS racers in the spotlight at the Terre Haute Action Track on Saturday, June 30.  The grand finale, crowning the 2007 King of Indiana Sprints Series, takes place at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt on Sunday, July 8.

February 9, 2007 –- As race track promoters finalize track schedules, fine tuning the details in advance of their opening day, they occasionally find a conflict with a local community event.  This is the case with Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, Indiana, and the King of Indiana Sprint Series date they originally announced.  Adjusting by a week, Tri-State will still host the concluding round of the 9-race KISS tour, but the event will now be on Sunday, July 8th.

Nine Events Fill 2007 KISS Schedule

January 24, 2007 –- Basketball may be king right now, but to many it simply means that racing season is just around the corner.  Underscoring the popularity of sprint cars in the Hoosier state, the King of Indiana Sprint Series (KISS) is bigger than at any other time it its history.  Growing to a slate of seven races in 2005, two additional tracks have boosted this year’s schedule to nine nights of wheel-to-wheel action.

For the first time since 2001, KISS’s inaugural season, Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, IN, will host KISS racers on July 1st.  And North Vernon’s Twin Cities Raceway Park will contest the first KISS race on the 3/8 mile oval on May 12.  With the return of the six venues that have made KISS one of the most anticipated racing events of the year, soon it will be time to shout once again, “Who Wants To Be King?”

SCHEDULE.  The first three races kick off the 2007 KISS series in mid-May, a traditionally busy time for Hoosier racing fans.  As has become traditional, Gas City I-69 Speedway sets the pace with a Friday, May 11, opening extravaganza.  The next night, Saturday, May 12, the KISS racers invade North Vernon’s Twin Cities Raceway.  Two weeks later, Lawrenceburg Speedway rumbles on Saturday, May 26.  After a break of more than four weeks, the action returns in a big way.  An “all KISS, all the time” weekend begins at Bloomington Speedway on Friday, June 15.  With barely enough time to roll through a car wash, the KISS racers push off at Putnamville’s Lincoln Park Speedway on Saturday, June 16.  Then to round out the weekend, Kokomo Speedway hosts a big Sunday show on June 17.  KISS turns into the final leg with a critical program at Paragon Speedway a week later, on Saturday, June 23.  Fans will then jump-start their Independence Day celebrating with a KISS doubleheader, beginning at the Terre Haute Action Track on Saturday, June 30, followed by the grand finale, crowning the 2007 King of Indiana Sprints Series at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt on Sunday, July 1.
