Pierce's Vermilion County Speedway Closed

We are very sad to announce our resignation as the promoters of the Vermilion County Speedway. We have worked very hard and devoted our heart, our time, and our money to the racetrack; but it seems that no matter how hard we try, we have met failure time and time again, with each of our events being a substantial loss. We intend to walk away in good standing with all racers, fans and sponsors.

We have a makeup race scheduled for next week, July 18th; however, since this race obviously will not take place, we will refund any armbands from this earlier rainout. Please send armbands along with your name and address and we will issue a refund. Send these to: Angie Pierce, 17047 N. 900 E., Oakwood, IL 61858. We will also be contacting all 2010 sponsors on making our leaving early right with them.

We are so sorry to make this announcement, but the economy in Vermilion County and lack of local support has left us no choice. We would like to thank those, however, who have come out and supported the speedway.

I am skeptical about the future of the speedway. It seems that year after year the promoters have been faced with this same problem. I hope someone can turn it around and keep the racetrack open. I’m not sure what it will take as we’ve definitely not had the right answers. Working so hard on the track has brought us financial, health, and emotional problems, not to mention loss of friendships. It’s always easy to hate the promoter as I’ve found out.

I should have known better than to take this chance, but there was no one else willing to take it. And since we didn’t want to see the track sit and not open, we gave it a chance; and despite others’ opinions, we did the best we could.

Please know that we will do our part to help find someone to promote the speedway in the future. We have spoken with a few candidates, however nothing certain. Maybe someone with better promotional skills and different ideas can turn this place around. In my opinion, we have the best racetrack in the country. We have had some great racing this year. It’s just a shame more people didn’t see it. We would like to also thank the fair board for this opportunity, and mention that they have done everything in their power to help us.

One more reminder to all racers and fans: Please support your local racetrack in your area. They are working their butts off to give you a place to race, and with these hard economic times, I know they are all struggling to keep the doors open. Please support them or your track could be next.

Thank you,
Bob and Angie Pierce

Ageless Don Kiger from last to first at PVCS

By ROB LEE

DANVILLE, Ill. – There was no doubt it was a popular win.

Don Kiger showed up at the front at the end of the 25-lap UMP Modified feature Saturday evening at Pierce’s Vermilion County Speedway after a lot of work. The Tilton driver started dead last on his home track.

“This feels great,” Kiger said in Toyota of Danville Victory Lane. “It’s awesome to know at 58 years old I can still start at the back and kick some butt.”

Kiger methodically maneuvered his familiar number 01 Brigham Masonry/Rivers Racing Jamie Wilson chassis through the field almost unnoticed and took the top spot during a one-lap dash to the checkered flag.

The final of two cautions was waived after the white flag to set up the final lap showdown. Kiger used the bottom groove to get by Ashmore’s Gabe Menser.

Menser led A.J. May as the race began. Covington, Ind.’s Josh Ferguson ran the cushion to pass them both by Lap 6. He paced the field until he jumped that cushion on Lap 13. Menser and May exchanged the lead until May pulled out with mechanical problems only 6 circuits from the end.

Kiger was in 5th at that point following Menser, Arby Burton, Ferguson and Randy Milburn. It only took five laps to set up the winning move.

Menser, Ferguson, Burton and Milburn held on for the Top 5.

Bobby Pierce led all 20 laps for the teen’s 10th UMP Pro Late Model victory of 2010. Track point leader Jerrad Krick picked up another UMP Street Stock 15-lap win.

A busy night is scheduled this Sunday at PVCS. The UMP American Modified Series is back for the feature rained out in May. A check for $1,500 awaits the winner. The UMP Modifieds also will run a regular show for $800. The UMP Pro Late Models race for $1,000 while the UMP Street Stock, Hornets and AFCO KidModz also are in action. Stanbrough takes Illinois Sprint Week opener at PVCS

By ROB LEE

DANVILLE, Ill. (June 9) – The rollercoaster ride ended up on a high for Jon Stanbrough Wednesday evening at Pierce’s Vermilion County Speedway.

The Brownsburg, Ind. veteran passed Chris Windom on Lap 24 and won the 30-lap Monster Midwest Sprint Car feature, the opener in the five-race Illinois Sprint Week. Stanbrough collected $2,000 for the victory and kept his PVCS favorable streak alive.

“Any of these guys that started up front could be standing right here,” Stanbrough said in Toyota of Danville Victory Lane. “We were lucky we caught the lapped traffic right and that worked out for us.”

It was far from an easy drive. Stanbrough started outside Row One, but fell back a few spots in the early stages running as low as fifth place.

“I made an adjustment to the shocks from inside the car. Then the track came to me. I was able to get up high, but I’m sure Chris was right behind me.”

The entire 30-lap distance was run without a caution.

Windom got caught behind slower traffic as both top runners moved to the bottom of the quarter-mile oval late in the race. The Canton, Ill. pilot, fresh off his first career USAC win in Pennsylvania Friday, kept Stanbrough in his sights. He finished ahead of a hard-charging Casey Shuman, who started 10th. Critter Malone and Missouri driver Hunter Schuerenberg came next.

Schuerenberg started on the pole and paced the first 14 laps before Windom moved by at the halfway point. After fading a bit, Schuerenberg made a late race rush back to crack the Top 5.

Windom, Schuerenberg and Stanbrough won the heats. Chad Branson won the consolation. The feature field was set by the top 16 in passing points from the heat races and the top 4 from the consolation.

There were 26 MMSCS racers on hand. The series moved to LaSalle Speedway Thursday. Races also are scheduled for Tri-City Speedway, Pontoon Beach; Lincoln Speedway and Shepp’s Speedway, Alexander the next consecutive nights.

Bobby Pierce won the UMP Pro Late Model 20-lap feature after taking the lead from Randy Shuman on Lap 4. Ed Lahey took the UMP Sportsman finale while Jerrad Krick was tops in UMP Street Stocks.

Up next at PVCS is the annual stop for the UMP Summernationals  and Illini FS Employees Night Monday June 21. The winner of the Super Late Model feature will take $5,000. The Illini FS UMP Modifieds, UMP Sportsman and UMP Street Stocks also will be in action.

DANVILLE, Ill. (May 23) – It is amazing what a change of scenery chassis-wise can do.

Brian Shirley had his new Pierce chassis dialed in en route to the UMP Monster Midwest Late Model Series victory Sunday evening at Pierce’s Vermilion County Speedway.

Shirley led all 30 laps after starting on the pole and picked up $2,000 for the win.

“Bob Pierce and I came together on this about three weeks ago,” Shirley said in Toyota of Danville Victory Lane. “This was the first night out and I couldn’t have asked for anything more.”

Shirley topped Jeep VanWormer, Brian Harris, Ryan Unzicker and Eric Smith at the checkered flag. But the Chatham, Ill. pilot knew Michigan’s VanWormer was the biggest challenge.

“I knew Jeep was going to be tough to beat. I was glad we could run top and bottom when we had to. The track was really racey.”

The battle at the beginning was nearly three-wide at times between Shirley, VanWormer, Ryan Unzicker and Kent Robinson. A couple cautions benefitted Shirley to keep him on the point early and he pulled away at the end.

Harris made the trip from Davenport, Iowa and was looking for his third win in three nights after victories at his hometown track and Peoria, Ill. His car got better as the race progressed and he moved past Unzicker for third on Lap 21.

Denny Schwartz took his second PVCS UMP Modified feature of the season leading all 20 laps. Ryan Huddleston made a late-race pass to win the Sportsman main. Lee Hall pulled away at the end to take the Pure Stock feature for his second win of the weekend. Jason Maier made it two-for-two at PVCS by winning the 15-lap Hornet finale.

Up next at PVCS is the first ever Pierce Party June 5-6, featuring the Toyota of Danville 50 for UMP Modifieds. The winner takes home $5,000. Several other classes also are running including the UMP Pro Late Models racing a full show both days. For more information log on to piercesvermilioncountyspeedway.com

Dauderman claims PVCS Pro LM Spectacular

By ROB LEE

Pierces Vermilion County Speedway

DANVILLE, Ill. (May 15) – Bobby Dauderman had done it so many times before – just never at Pierces Vermilion County Speedway.

The 2009 UMP Pro Late Model National Champion bided his time, worked the high groove and caught race-long leader Bobby Pierce with five laps to go Saturday evening. He then pulled away for the win in the Linne Machine Pro Spectacular for the crate engine cars.

“The high side was working as the low side was rubbering up,” Dauderman said in Toyota of Danville Victory Lane. “We were fortunate to catch Bobby Pierce. He ran a great race.”

Pierce, Oakwood, Ill., took the lead from the pole and led the first 35 laps. Dauderman, Alhambra, Ill., was stagnant around fifth place for the opening laps after starting sixth and then began to move through the field. He then picked off Illinois state point leader Nick Bauman and Springfield teen Joseph Hughs to take third on Lap 12. When he used the high groove to get by Randy Shuman four laps later he found himself about a straightaway behind the 14-year old Pierce.

Only three cautions flew in the 40-lap event. The final set up a two-lap dash, but Pierce could not get by a lapped car and Dauderman picked up the $1,250 first prize.

“I was hoping we could hold him off on that last (caution),” Dauderman said. “We were happy to be here and get the win.”

Shuman, Bauman and Lebanon’s Casey Montague completed the Top 5.

Nick Allen, Wheatfield, Ind., dominated the UMP Modifieds. He led all 25 laps in the feature after setting fast time and winning his heat. That was fresh off a win the night before at Kankakee, Ill.

In the Sportsman, Steve Peeden, Paragon, Ind., won the 15-lap make up feature from the May 1 rain out. Scott Hufford, Danville, won the regular feature.

Three-time UMP Street Stock National Champion Jerrad Krick, Earl Park, Ind., took that main. Jason Maier made his first trip to PVCS pay off by winning the Hornet feature over his brother Matt.

PVCS welcomes back the UMP Monster Midwest Late Model Series Sunday May 23. The UMP Modifieds, Sportsman, Pure Stocks and Hornets are also slated. For more information, log on to piercesvermilioncountyspeedway.com.

Feger launches to Illiana 40 win

By ROB LEE

DANVILLE, ILL (April 11) – The Highside Hustler hit a high note racing the low groove Sunday evening at Pierce’s Vermilion County Speedway.

Defending UMP Super Late Model national champion Jason Feger led the final 39 laps to win the inaugural Illiana 40 and open the era of former racer turned promoter Bob Pierce.

“This is a great way to start this new time,” Feger said in Toyota of Danville Victory Lane. “I’m happy for the Pierces and I’m really happy I did it in a Bob Pierce Chassis.”

Feger started fourth in the 20-car field. It only took him one lap to use the top of the race track and speed around opening lap leader Derrick Chandler. He waited out three cautions and used the restarts to launch out to big leads.

“My signaler was showing me to go low, which I knew already,” Feger said. “This isn’t my best track for success, but the restarts were good and we’ll take it.”

2008 UMP Champion Dennis Erb, Jr. followed Feger around Chandler on Lap 2 and held until Jeep VanWormer got by 29 laps later. They finished in that order with Jimmy Dehm and Ryan Unzicker rounding out the Top 5.

Attrition played a huge part in the event as only 8 cars finished.

Denny Schwartz had few problems besting the UMP Modified field. The Ashmore veteran completed a sweep by leading all 20 laps of the feature. He also took his heat race. Gabe Menser, Mike Spatola, Ryan Thomas and Brian Shaw completed the Top 5.

Mattoon’s Nate Zimmer took advantage of some other drivers’ late adversity and won the 15-lap UMP Street Stock feature. Logan Moody of Catlin won the KidModz 15-lap finale.

Pierce’s VCS is next in action May 1 featuring the American Modified Series racing for $1,500 to win. UMP Pro Late Models (Crates), UMP Sportsman, UMP Street Stocks and UMP Hornets also are in action. For more information, log on to piercesvermilioncountyspeedway.com.

Bob and Angie Pierce New Promoters at Vermilion County Speedway for 2010 Season

We are happy to announce that we will become the 2010 promoters for Vermilion County Speedway in Danville, IL.

We are excited about this opportunity to look at racing from the other point of view, (not just as the racer).

We hope with Bob’s racing experience and our heavy involvement in racing that we can bring some new ideas and develop VCS back into a successful Midwest dirt track.

It’s no secret the promoters over the last several years have struggled with hard times. We’d like to add a twist to things by creating some new ideas at getting the community and the fans more involved. We plan to limit the racing schedule somewhat, (we feel that our economy cannot support weekly racing). Instead we are having 15 events, each of which is a special for one of our classes. Our specials include a Summer Nationals race, a $5000 to win 2-day Modified Spectacular, a $1000 to win Hornet Special, a Crate Late Model $2500 to win Special, some Monster Late Model Series and some Monster Sprint Series Specials, one American Modified Series special, a $500 to win Bomber Enduro race on Fair night, and much more.

Our track will be UMP sanctioned and include each of the following classes on some nights: Late Models, Sprints, Modifieds, Crate Late Models, Street Stocks, Pure Stocks, Sportsman, Hornets, Kidmodz, Mini-Sprints, and Bomber Enduro.

We plan to add a beer garden for the adults, featuring special beer pricing, and for the kids we plan to have nightly games and events to help bring the crowd participation and excitement back to the speedway.

Our hopes are that with Bob’s racing reputation and with a lot of determination we can make VCS “The Place to Race” and give the fans all they’ve wished for.

The fairboard has been very easy to work with to this point and have agreed to work through our needs. We believe that as long as both parties communicate we can make this a long prosperous relationship, and we hope that as the economy stabilizes we can get back to every week racing.
We would like to ask the fans and the racers to work with us through all of our trial phases, and we will continue to work with them and try to respond to everyone’s needs.

We would like to add that we will be hiring Terry Pichon as our race day director. His responsibilities are to run the show on race day, which will include all of the aspects from handling the race itself to security, concession, teching, etc. Remember, we race with our son and support our chassis at the racetrack, which doesn’t allow much time on race day to run the show. We plan to be in attendance at all of our events, even racing in the majority of them with Bobby. This is why we’ve hired Terry to handle race day decisions.

We also plan to utilize the racetrack for our Race School, which we are developing with fellow racer, Jason Feger. More information will be posted on this as soon as it’s available.

We have big plans for VCS and hope you join in our excitement.

Please watch www.bobpierceracecars.com for all updates until a track website is done.

Thank you,
Bob and Angie
