For Immediate Release

The "New" Speedway Illustrated Celebrates Its First Anniversary
Now self-owned, America’s favorite motorsports monthly is going stronger than ever.

A year ago, when Speedway Illustrated announced that it was returning to publication after a change of ownership, some observers were skeptical. Not anymore. “Those who figured we’d be a bit timid after what we’d gone through were probably surprised that we came back hitting on all eight cylinders,” said publisher Karl Fredrickson. “Under self-ownership, we’re publishing the magazine we always wanted to produce: one that helps racers go faster with real-world and race-winning tech from the experts, car features straight from victory lane, safety from those who understand it, and material on upcoming events.”

Speedway Illustrated has also reinstituted a time-honored tradition of motorsports—pairing beautiful models with fast race cars and hot new products. “I’ve always used country music videos as a guide for the tone and appropriateness,” said Fredrickson. “So if you think those girls in those videos look just right, then Speedway Illustrated will look just right, too. Usually.”

Like the racers they cover, Fredrickson & Co. like to laugh at themselves. “Racers are some of the most dedicated and fun people in any activity,” Fredrickson said. “We want Speedway Illustrated, their magazine, to reflect that. So we celebrate the lifestyle with in-depth content as well as racing’s own special brand of humor. And we run right on the cushion with sometimes controversial commentaries, yet all points of view are published.”

The entire team takes great pride in fulfilling an obligation left by previous owners. “We have honored all subscriptions paid to someone else,” said Fredrickson. “It is a real privilege that has been made possible by the ownership and team of experts, including Dick Berggren, who’ve been together through thick and thin for decades.”

Subscription prices will remain constant, too. “Our subscription price is a little more than some monthly magazines that claim to be in our category, but we pay a lot more to get the best writers and photographers,” said Fredrickson. “Speedway Illustrated’s readers deserve the best.” They also won’t see games with what they paid. “I despise introductory rates at the expense of longtime customers. If I’m a 10-year-long, paying customer for cable, why does my neighbor get a far better rate than me if he gets rid of his satellite? Speedway Illustrated’s rates are consistent: it’s $19.95 for one-year at a time with cash or credit card and $14.95 per year with an auto-renewing credit card. The auto-renewing credit card saves a tremendous amount of money in paper, printing, and postage of renewal reminders, so we simply pass that savings on. Many people enjoy the convenience of uninterrupted service of America’s Favorite Motorsports monthly, Speedway Illustrated.”

Subscriptions, renewals, gift orders and extensions are happily accepted by going to www.speedwayillustrated.com, by calling 877-9-RACE MAG (877-972-2362) or by sending a check to P.O. Box 5825, Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33310.

First Legends Dirt Modified Points Championship to be Settled this Weekend

Sept 22, 2011: The 2011 Legends Dirt Modified points championship will be settled this Saturday, September 24 at East Lincoln Speedway in Stanley, NC. Points leader Tommy Corellis leads second place Willy Evernham by just 12 points & third place runner Mark Lowrey by 27 points.

Both Corellis and Lowrey have two wins this season, and Willy Evernham has three. All three drivers have raced hard throughout the inaugural Legends Dirt Modified season to put themselves in contention to be the 2011 champion.

Recent winner Evan York sits solidly in the fourth place points position, while Jerry Lambert and Johnny Love have a close battle for the fifth spot with only 5 points separating the two.

“It has been a great season of racing, and we’re excited to have three different drivers that are mathematically capable of winning the championship this weekend”, said Shawn Parker whose company Dirt Track Racing School leases and maintains Legends Dirt Modifieds. “Ray Evernham designed a competitive racecar, and we’ve seen tight racing all season long. We’ve had a road racer, an asphalt oval racer & some dirt racers all win feature events in 2011. It’s really been an excellent season so far.”

Although this weekend's race will be the final points race of 2011, special non-points races are being looked into. “We had a non-points event at Fork Mountain Raceway in Virginia earlier this month, and it went really well”, said Parker. “The fans loved the cars, the track thought the racing was excellent and all the drivers enjoyed travelling to a new track. We’re hoping we can get another race or two in at some different tracks before the end of the year.”

(Thirty-Ninth RPM Promoters Workshops Session Lineup Announced)

(MERRILL, WI, September 16, 2011) Two prominent NASCAR racing personalities who also own short tracks will lead the session lineup for the 39th Annual RPM Promoters Workshops, presented by Racing Promotion Monthly. Former Sprint Cup team owner, crew chief, now a consultant with Hendrick Motorsports, Ray Evernham will keynote the December Western Workshop at Reno, NV, and Sprint Cup, short track driver, and television commentator Kenny Wallace will open the February Speedweek Workshop at Daytona Beach, FL. Evernham owns East Lincoln (NC) Speedway and Wallace, Macon (IL) Speedway.

At both Workshops, attendees’ registrations automatically enter them to win tickets and ticket/hotel packages to 2012 NASCAR Cup weekends and short track events. The first 150 promoters to register for the Reno Workshop receive complimentary admission to the National Automobile Museum, home to the Harrah collection of antique and collectible cars.

The preliminary session lineup for each of the three-day Workshops will be similar. Speakers and expert panels will address topics of current interest and offer discussions covering practical aspects of track operation. Networking is again a big part of the meetings with plentiful time to mingle and exchange ideas.

Sessions planned include a discussion of the challenges facing location-based entertainment venues such as speedways in a digital virtual world and the introduction of RPM-developed licensing that enables promoters to control the intellectual property related to their events and venues. Experts will revisit the topic of web-based social media with the emphasis on understanding the buying and decision-making habits of digitally sophisticated teen and young adult consumers. Sessions will also offer strategies to help promoters match expenses to revenue in a recessionary economy. With particular emphasis on so-called “small tracks,” sessions will discuss financial management, car count improvement, sponsorship, and guerrilla marketing strategies with low or no capital cost.
The docket will include five popular “Fast Fifteen” idea-a-minute sessions covering subjects pertinent to tracks of any surface, size, or market area. The Workshops will address current recession-driven high turnover among promoters with expanded sessions affording new and sophomore promoters the opportunity to network and learn from seasoned veterans.

Prominent motorsports attorney Cary Agajanian returns to give promoters his overview of case law and precedent from the past twelve months, and he will join other motorsports legal experts in a follow up open forum session.

Speakers, panelists, and the hour-by-hour session lineup will be announced soon.

Exhibitors from 50 companies will showcase products and services valuable to promoters during the concurrent trade show that accompanies the Workshops at both locations.
The Workshops of the Thirty-Ninth Annual Series are scheduled for 5-7 December, 2011 at Reno, NV, and 20-22 February, 2012 at Daytona Beach, FL. The RPM Promoters Workshops, are produced by Racing Promotion Monthly, the idea newsletter of auto racing promoters. ALAN CERWICK NAMED PRESIDENT AT VP RACING FUELS

Former Valero Executive Plans National Branded Distribution

SAN ANTONIO, TX (August 18, 2011) VP Racing Fuels, Inc., recently announced an agreement whereby over the coming months company owner Steve Burns will sell his interest in the company to Alan Cerwick, former executive at Valero Energy and 19-year veteran of the petroleum industry. Cerwick will assume the position of President, while Burns will remain CEO and continue to direct all research and development for race fuel products.

“VP remains committed to leading the industry in race fuel technology and we’ll continue delivering the leading edge fuel products racers have come to expect,” said Burns. “We have an opportunity to take the VP brand to the next level and Alan’s depth and breadth of experience in the industry will prove invaluable as he undertakes this new initiative.” Cerwick has held key management positions at Koch Industries and was formerly Vice President of Wholesale Operations at Valero Energy. In 2002, Cerwick was integral to the rollout of Valero branded gasoline stations across the U.S.

“I’m excited about the unique opportunity to leverage VP’s 35-year history of providing performance fuels in all forms of motorsports into a national brand of retail gas stations,” Cerwick said. “Racers win with VP fuels every weekend all across the country and internationally. Taking this winning tradition into the consumer marketplace provides unique opportunities for not only the retail gas station market, but also for all of VP's racing partners.”

“VP plans to utilize this expanded market to provide more exposure to untapped markets for its partner series, tracks and race teams. Putting more fans in the seats helps all of the racing industry grow,” Cerwick continued. “Retail gas stations will have the opportunity to expand their offering into new areas of revenue, including ‘VP100,’ a 100 octane street legal unleaded racing fuel, and an expanded product mix to include VP-branded fuel system cleaners, octane boosters and our recently introduced SEF Small Engine Fuel for 2-cycle and 4-cycle portable gas-powered equipment.”

“As our concept comes to realization, we will be working with our racing partners to find new and unique opportunities to expand the thrill and excitement of racing to our consumers at the retail gas stations,” Cerwick concluded.

Headquartered in San Antonio, Texas, VP Racing Fuels has been an industry leader in race fuel technology and innovation since 1975, manufacturing fuels with a reputation for superior power and performance. VP is the Official Fuel of NHRA Championship Drag Racing, American Le Mans, Rally America, World of Outlaws Sprint Cars and Late Models, among nearly 60 VP-sponsored series and sanctioning bodies.

VP RACING FUELS, SUPERFLOW TECHNOLOGIES ANNOUNCE STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP

Industry Leaders Leverage Synergies to Reach Engine Builders

DES MOINES, IA (August 9, 2011) SuperFlow Technologies Group today announced a multi-year agreement with VP Racing Fuels whereby SuperFlow factory technicians will test all new engine dynamometers prior to shipment exclusively with VP’s C12 racing fuel. “The partnership with VP is very exciting because although we sell very different products, our goal is the same—to produce repeatable products with optimum performance,” said Scott Giles, CEO of SuperFlow. “For us, it’s all about repeatability, which means controlling variables. We know that each barrel of C12 that goes into our test engines is going to perform exactly like the last.”

“In addition to consistency, VP’s fuels have a well-earned reputation for power and performance while SuperFlow is recognized as one of the leading manufacturers of dynamometers and flow benches in the country,” said Steve Scheidker, VP’s Director of Marketing. “With SuperFlow’s endorsement, engine builders among its customers will be reminded that the combination of SuperFlow equipment and VP Racing Fuels will yield not only the most consistent data, but also the optimum performance that can be achieved with an engine.”

SuperFlow’s Dirt Late Model Team will also use C12 exclusively to ensure maximum power and consistent performance. “We’ve had troubles with other fuels in the past gumming up our carburetors and providing inconsistent power,” explained Mike Giles, SuperFlow’s Marketing Manager. “Our in-house testing on both the engine and chassis dynamometers with C12 in both of our cars produced more power, but most importantly the power was there consistently across our entire test procedure from multiple barrels of fuel.”

VP Racing Fuels has been leading the field in race fuel technology for more than 35 years. Offering maximum power and torque, consistency and top quality, VP is generally acknowledged as preferred by sportsman, professional racers and engine builders alike when they’re given a choice. VP is the Official Fuel of NHRA Championship Drag Racing, American Le Mans, and World of Outlaws Sprint Car and Late Model Series, among nearly 60 VP-sponsored racing series across North America and around the world.

In addition to racing fuels, VP’s product line includes performance chemicals, lubricants, traction compounds, fuel containers and SEF Small Engine Fuels – each designed to produce optimum performance in their respective applications. More information can be obtained online at VPRacingFuels.com and SEFfuels.com.

Larry Shaw Race Cars Dominate Florida Speedweeks

Batesville, Arkansas (02/22/11) – Larry Shaw Race Cars customers wreaked havoc on the competition during the course of the sixteen race, Florida Speedweeks as they claimed feature wins in thirteen of the events for Open Wheel Modifieds.

The 2011 Florida Speedweeks for Open Wheel Modifieds spanned sixteen nights at four tracks.  Jeff Mathews began the streak of domination for Larry Shaw Race Cars by claiming both events at Lake City Speedway (Lake City, Florida) on January 28th-29th.

The action next shifted to the "Clay By The Bay" at East Bay Raceway Park (Tampa, Florida), where Jared Landers made a rare Open Wheel Modified start for 2011, and came away with his first ever win at the facility on February 3rd.

Next, many of the nation's top Open Wheel Modified pilots invaded Volusia Speedway Park (Deleon Springs, Florida) for the 40th Annual UNOH DIRTCar Nationals.  The performance that Larry Shaw customers would exhibit during the eight night series would be nothing short of spectacular.  Austin Dillon, would break through with the opening night win on February 8th, and would back it up with a win on February 15th.   Arkansas driver, Richie Tosh, broke into victory lane on February 12th.  North Carolina's Ty Dillon claimed the biggest win of his young career on February 14th, when he topped the $5,000 Gator Championship win.  He proved the win was no fluke by also claiming one of the triple features on February 15th.  Nascar star, Clint Bowyer, would go on a tear in the series as he piloted his #33 Larry Shaw entry to three wins (February 9th, 10th, and 11th), and would claim the overall 40th Annual UNOH DIRTCar Nationals title.

The Florida Speedweeks 2011 wound down with a pair of events on February 18th-19th at Ocala Speedway (Ocala, Florida), and it was no big surprise that Larry Shaw Race Car customers claimed the wins as Mike Spatola scored the win on Friday night, while Kyle Bronson closed out the show with a win on February 19th.

While Larry Shaw Customers were conquering the sunshine state, in other parts of the country other team drivers were claiming wins as well.  Ashley Newman earned the win at the annual Winterfest event at Winchester Speedway (Winchester, Tennessee) on February 19th, while Wesley Veal earned two wins in the Texas Short Track Championship on February 18th-19th.

Larry Shaw Race Cars would like to congratulate its customers on their great accomplishments and would also like to wish everyone the best of luck for the 2011 season.

VP INTRODUCES NEW “DRT” FUEL FOR OVAL TRACK RACING
Late Model Plus With More Horsepower!

SAN ANTONIO, TX (February 17, 2011) VP Racing Fuels, known for making more power not just on the dyno but where it counts – on the race track – today announced the release of “DRT” fuel for oval track racers.

For more than 35 years, VP fuels have won poles, races and championships by producing more horsepower and more torque at cooler operating temperatures in all forms of dirt and asphalt oval track racing. “The new DRT fuel is a perfect complement to our Late Model Plus fuel,” reports Jim Kelly, VP’s Corporate Director-Sales & Marketing. “When we first developed fuels for Late Models, we were tasked with making something better than what was available in other brands. So we found more power. But because these engines will build heat lap after lap, engine builders and racers asked if we could help there too. The technology in our ‘C’ fuels, like cool and clean running C12, was engineered into Late Model Plus and it’s become the standard for Late Model racing, fueling champions like Steve Francis, Darrell Lanigan, Tim McCreadie and many others.”

Never known to sit still, the chemists at VP have now developed a new formula to satisfy the demands of racers and engine builders who want more performance for their dollar. The new DRT fuel provides 8-10 HP more than other Late Model fuels on the market while maintaining the cool temps that are critical to engine longevity.

“If you’ve been running our Late Model Plus or one of the other brands on the market, we suggest you richen the jet and then go set some track records,” suggests Freddie Turza, Oval Track Tech Specialist for VP. “Anyone can make power in the dyno room, but once you get it to the track, track conditions put even higher demands on the fuel, and you’re left scratching your head. And what really counts is what happens at the track. You may not be able to run the tune somebody used to make power on a few dyno pulls, so don’t let promises of big HP gains in advertisements fool you. With VP, our slogan is ‘Makin’ Power’ and for 35 years we’ve fueled, among other things, the fastest accelerating cars on race gas in the United States –NHRA Pro Stocks. Drag and oval track fuel technology cross over quite often so we expect to continue fueling the fastest Late Models in the country this year with either Late Model Plus or new DRT.”

Race engines are a huge investment. We understand that and never cut corners to meet a price point. To protect your investment and get the performance you demand, VP products have proven extremely reliable. “We don’t pay big name drivers a base salary to run our decals like some companies may,” said Kelly. “We just offer engine builders and race teams the chance to make good power and run cooler, using VP fuels that are consistent gallon after gallon, drum after drum, and available from an extensive dealer network across the U.S. and Canada.”

Speedway Illustrated “Outstanding Contribution” Award to Scooter Brothers

Daytona Beach, Fla. –Paul “Scooter” Brothers, co-owner of the Comp Performance Group, received the “Outstanding Contribution to Racing” award presented by Dick Berggren’s Speedway Illustrated magazine as part of the annual RPM Promoters Workshops in Daytona Beach.
The honor paid tribute to the years of service Brothers has devoted to the racing industry with the various companies under the Comp umbrella, particularly Comp Cams, a brand he helped shepherd to prominence in many forms of motorsports. Key to his selection were the close ties between Brothers and the 150-plus sanctioning bodies and individual speedways his firm works with across the racing spectrum, many of which were represented at the RPM gathering.
“Racers, promoters, and fans all benefit from dynamic, enthusiastic, and robust producers of aftermarket race parts,” said Speedway Illustrated publisher Karl Fredrickson. “Through their efforts and the competition that results, racers enjoy higher quality components at lower costs. Plus, the involved nature of the aftermarket companies means that regional series and individual tracks can make specific component requests to better fit the racers in their area.”
A drag racer in his youth, Brothers jokes that he was “poisoned” by the racing bug early in life. A stint with Racing Head Service (RHS) led to his involvement with Comp Cams in the 1980s, and since then his name and face – as well as the Comp logo – have become familiar to drivers, mechanics, race organizers, and his fellow captains of the motorsports industry.
“Recently, the efforts of Scooter Brothers and the entire team at
Comp Performance Group have been dedicated to the concept of maintaining a healthy race industry first,” said Fredrickson. “It is our privilege at Dick Berggren’s Speedway Illustrated to recognize Scooter and the entire team at Comp Performance Group.”
The award was presented by Speedway Illustrated senior writer Bones Bourcier, who praised Brothers as one of the unseen but much appreciated faces behind the decals that adorn America’s race cars.
Brothers, a native of Memphis, Tenn., is no stranger to being honored by his motorsports peers. Among his past laurels was a 2005 induction into the SEMA Hall of Fame, the highest honor bestowed by the prestigious Specialty Equipment Market Association.
