BOLLINGER CAPTURES 2ND STRAIGHT “SUPER MOD 100” AT PEORIA SPEEDWAY

(Peoria, IL) Ray Bollinger capitalized on a fading Gary Cook, Jr. and won his 2nd straight UMP “Illinois State Championship Super Mod 100” and the $3,000 first prize Saturday night at Peoria Speedway.

The 40 car field featured 4 former UMP National Champions and the front row was comprised of 2 former champs in Jeff Leka and current National points leader Mike Harrison, who is seeking his 3rd title. Leka and Harrison ran side-by-side over the first 2 laps until Leka took control on lap 3. Harrison jumped to the top in an effort to catch Leka as the action was fast and furious over the first 7 laps until a caution bunched the field.

Bollinger, who started 7th, drove past 3rd place Brent Mullins and Harrison down the back stretch on lap 15 using the middle of the track and began pursuit of Leka. Harrison’s night ended on lap 17 when he stalled in turn 3 with motor problems and brought out the second caution. Bollinger then drove by Leka on lap 18 in turn one for the lead.

13th-starting Gary Cook, Jr., who came from the B main, had charged into 4th by lap 20 and began an entertaining 3 way battle with Mullins and Leka for 2nd on lap 27. Mullins finally took 2nd as he pulled away from Leka and then Cook drove past Leka on the bottom on lap 36. The race was flagged at the half way mark as drivers were allowed a red flag stop to make adjustments to their cars.

On the lap 50 re-start, Bollinger drove away but the battle raged between Mullins and Cook, Jr. for 2nd, with Cook finally making it stick on lap 54. Cook Jr closed on Bollinger and Bollinger nearly spun out on lap 73 as Cook tried to dive under him, forcing both drivers to the infield. Remarkably, both drivers retained their positions down the backstretch and ran side-by-side over the next 2 laps until Cook took control on the backstretch on lap 75.

Cook looked like the car to beat, stretching his lead after a lap 77 caution as Mullins challenged Bollinger for 2nd. A final caution on lap 87 bunched the field up but Cook looked like the class of the field. 2 laps later, Cook’s car began to fade as a faulty battery caused the car to miss badly. Cook managed to stay out front until lap 94, when Bollinger took the lead for good. Mullins ended up 2nd, with Kevin Weaver, Butch Weisser and Donovan Lodge completing the top 5. Cook ended up salvaging an 8th place finish.

“I could see Gary’s panhard bar had broken so I knew it was just a matter of time”, said Bollinger in victory lane. “He surprised me there when he showed me his nose and I gassed it and nearly took us both out. I feel terrible about driving us both through the infield, but I’m glad we both were able to continue. To win our 2nd straight 100 lapper here is huge.”

Donny Walden tuned up for next weekends’ 100 lap UMP Late Model State Championship race with a flag-to-flag win, followed by Charley Hess, Darren Friedman, Mike Mullvain and Brandon Thirlby.

“We kinda consider this our home track, so its great to get a win here and I think we will have something for them next weekend”, said Walden.

Steve Shannon won the “Illinois State Championship” for Limited Late Models, surviving 6 caution flags for the $500 win. Brad Willis, Jr finished 2nd, with Jim Carmody, Scott Schoener, and Jack Siegel rounding out the top 5. “I just kept protecting the bottom there and it seemed like a marathon with all the cautions”, said Shannon.

Austin Archdale survived a late-race charge by Billy Brickley as he got hung up by lapped traffic to take the Illinois Lightning Sprint feature. Brickely, Brent Burrows, Mark Billings and Brad Funk completed the top 5.

FEGER HALTS LANCE JR’S WINNING STREAK AT 8 AT PEORIA SPEEDWAY....Schrader, Carmody and Rossell pick up wins

(Peoria, IL) Having not lost at Peoria Speedway since the Summernationals race in July, Steve Lance Jr. knew he had a challenge as the Northern All-Stars rolled into the track Thursday night.

With a star-studded field on hand, Jason Feger jumped to the high side as the green flew and out-gunned Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame member Billy Moyer going into turn 1 ,but Moyer pulled even on the front stretch. Feger then rim-rode through tuns 1 and 2 and dove to the bottom to take the lead. Moyer contuned to work the bottom, but Lance, Jr. blew by on the top coming out of turn 2 on lap 10 to take second.

Feger began to encounter lapped traffic on lap 11 and Lance, Jr. closed in. Lance, Jr. used lapped traffic to pin Feger in as Feger went to the bottom on lap 17, giving Lance, Jr. the lead. A caution for Donny Walden on lap 19 bunched the field up and cleared the track Feger immediately challenged Lance, Jr. and took the lead back on lap 21 as they raced down the back stretch. Moyer moved past a fading Lance, Jr. , who was smoking with engine problems, on lap 25. Moyer ended up 2nd, with Kevin Weaver passing Lance, Jr. for 3rd on the last lap. Lance, Jr. finished 4th and Billy Drake was 5th.

“Those guys put up a great fight”, said Feger. “It’s hard to keep a streak going but Steve had it going on tonight and any time 21 is behind you, you get worried. That was a great race and the track was in good shape. We love running here and wish we could do it more often.”

NASCAR star Kenny Schrader survived 6 caution flags and a demo derby behind him, going flag-to-flag for the win in the UMP Modifieds. Erik Bruce made several attempts to get by Schrader on the top groove in turns 1 and 2, but could never make the pass stick down the back stretch and had to settle for 2nd. 16th starting Mike Harrison finished 3rd, 19th starting Gary Cook, Jr. ended up 4th, with Mark Johnson 5th.

“I about screwed up there’, said Schrader. “I saw Erik pulling next to me on the high side so I figured I’d better get my butt up there or I would lose the race. I had a blast, and the track was really smooth. Thanks to the fans for coming out in this heat.”

Jim Carmody slipped past race-long leader Steve Shannon on lap 15 and won the Limited Late Model feature. Shannon, Rob Bauman, Sr., Carl Feger and Chris Feger rounded out the top 5.

“This is our first win here in 2 years”, an elated Carmody said in victory lane. “Steve slid out of the groove a little there so I jumped down there and went past him.”

In the Mod Lights division it was the Greg Rossell show. Rossell won the heat running away, and then started last in the feature and drove through the field for the win. Brian Woodruff, Blake Woodruf, Jim Neal and Todd Cramer completed the top 5. “I want to thank Curt for letting us race here”, said Rossell. “The track was smooth and fun to race on. We had a great time and look forward to coming back.”

Action resumes at Peoria Speedway on Saturday, September 3 with Illinois State Championship events for the Limited Late Models, UMP Street Stocks and UMP Hornets. Mod Lights, and the Illinois Lightning Sprints will also be on the card. The track will be closed on Saturday, September 10. Sunday, September 11, the MOWA 410 Sprints will be in action.

LANCE JR, JAGGERS AND DRAKE WAGE WAR AT PEORIA SPEEDWAY

Lance, Jr., Bollinger, Siegel, Barnes, Jr. and Butterfield win points titles

(Peoria, IL) Promoter Curt Mottaz upped the ante at Peoria Speedway’s “Season Championships” events Saturday night as he offered each front-row starter in all 5 classes the chance to make additional money with the “Front Row Challenge”. The front-row starters in each division were guaranteed starting money plus a bonus to start the feature from the back and were paid for each car they passed on the track. 3 of the 5 divisions accepted the offer, making for a terrific night of racing.

In one of the best races of the season, Steve Lance Jr., Jason Jaggers and Billy Drake put on a line-swapping, side jobbing 30 lap feature.. John Gardner was on the pole, but chose to take the front-row challenge and a guaranteed $350 to start, along with $40 for each car passed. Gardner moving to the back allowed Mike Mullvain and Gerry Reeder to occupy the front row as Mullvain jumped to the lead at the start. Jaggers followed Mullvain on the bottom for 2nd.

2 caution periods bunched the field and Jaggers went to the top on a lap 5 re-start. By lap 7 Jaggers was pressuring Mullvain for the lead and finally made it stick on lap 10. Lance, Jr., driving brother Tim's Rayburn after breaking his rear end in the heat race, had charged from 16th to 4th by lap 6. Lance got by Drake and then Mullvain for 2nd place on lap 11. Drake passed Mullvain on the high side on lap 12, Lance pulled a classic slide job on Jaggers on lap 12, only to get slid back down the backstretch as Jaggers kept the lead until a lap 14 cautiuon for Matt McAdams.

On the re-start, Jaggers, Lance, Jr and Drake set sail, racing all over the track. Lance Jr. slid Jaggers again on lap 15, but Jaggers turned left and drove back by down the back stretch Drake stayed close to the leader, getting even with Lance as all 3 drivers swithced lines nearly every corner. Jaggers and Lance would swap the lead 8 times between laps 20 and 22 until Lance finally made a slide job stick on lap 23. Jaggers, who got pinned in lapped traffic on lap 27, then had to contend with Drake, who pressured Jaggers until he nipped him at the line for 2nd. Lance, Jr. made a bold move in traffic on lap 27 and held on for his 8th straight win at Peoria Speedway and the Track Championship. Jaggers ended up 3rd, followed by Charley Hess and Mullvain.

"That was one helluva race from where I was sitting", an exhausted Lance, Jr. told the crowd. "The fans had to love that one! It seemed like Jason and I swapped the lead about every corner. The track was perfect, you could run anywhere you wanted and we all did. Thanks to my brother Tim for letting me use his car tonight".

Erik Bruce won his 3rd straight UMP Modified feature, leading flag-to-flag. Bruce survived 5 caution periods but was never seriously challenged, with Derrick Doerr, Dan Turner, Steve Turner and Mark Johnson completing the top 5. “We’ve really got this car dialed in right now”, said Bruce. “I could hear those guys back there, and you could run wherever you wanted, but I never did see them. It feels good to get our 3rd straight here.”

Ray Bollinger had a rough night, dropping out of both the heat race and feature, but nudged Johnson for the Track Championship for the Modifieds. Bollinger currently sits 3rd in the UMP National title chase.

Only 3 points separated Chuck Barnes, Jr and John Farris for the Street Stock Championship at the beginning of the night, but the tight points race did not stop both drivers from accepting Mottaz’ offer to start from the back row. Farris and Barnes also sit 2nd and 3rd in the UMP National Championship race, but the offer was for only one to start from the back. Mottaz agreed to pay both drivers if they started from the back to the delight of the fans.

With the title contenders in the back, Paula Harrison jumped to the lead from her pole position and won flag-to-flag, with Wally Zander finishing 2nd. Barnes and Farris put on a show from the back, swapping positions several times until Barnes, Jr, was able to secure 3rd with Farris 4th and Terry Miller 5th. Barnes, Jr. was crowned Track Champion by finishing ahead of Farris.

“I just need to breathe here for a minute”, said Harrison. “I can’t believe we won, I was looking for Chuck and John the whole race.”

Jack Siegel lead all 15 laps of the Limited Late Model feature, cementing his Track Championship. Brian Crebo, Jason Weyeneth, Jim Carmody and Bobby Cowell, Sr. completed the top 5. “Our car has been great all year, and it feels good to get this title”, Siegel said.

UMP National points leader and Track Champion Kenny Butterfield also accepted the front-row challenge in the Hornet division. Zack Bollinger inherited the pole and jumped to the lead as Butterfield charged through the field. Butterfield’s night ended as he challenged for 3rd on lap 8 as sparks flew from the bottom of his car. Bollinger held on for the win, his 2nd of the year at the track.

Action resumes Thursday night at Peoria Speedway with the Northern All-Stars Late Model Series season finale at the track, paying $2,000 to-win.

BRUCE AND BOLLINGER PUT ON A SHOW AT PEORIA SPEEDWAY

Lance, Jr,. Shannon, Farris, Butterfield, Koering and Archdale pick up wins

(Peoria, IL) A battle among champions highlighted a fantastic night of racing at Peoria Speedway Saturday night as the track remarkably skirted storms in the area.

In the UMP Modified division, 2010 track champion Erik Bruce used every inch of the Peoria oval to get by current track points leader Ray Bollinger for a thrilling win. Bollinger jumped to the lead at the start of the race, and Bruce had moved his way into 2nd by lap 3 and the battle began. Bollinger rode the bottom of the track as Bruce blasted the high side on both ends of the track.

Bollinger survived 3 caution periods, and Bruce began trying different lines attempting to catch Bollinger, who currently sits 2nd in the UMP National Championship chase. On lap 16, Bruce finally edged under Bollinger and the duo ran side-by-side over the next 3 laps until securing the lead for good on the white flag lap. Bollinger finished 2nd, followed by Mark Johnson, Dan Turner and Derrick Doerr.

“That was one heckuva race there”, said Bruce. “I was too tight on top so I had to get on the bottom and Ray left the door open just a little and we made it work. I’ve gotta thank the track prep guys as this was the best the track has been all year.”

Steve Lance, Jr, won his 7th straight UMP Late Model feature event, but it did not come easy. Lance out-gunned pole sitter Bobby Pierce on the opening lap. 2 distinct grooves had developed and Brandon Sheppard used the high line to get by Pierce for 2nd on lap 2 and began to chase Lance. A caution on lap 8 bunched the field up, and the chase resumed. By lap 16, Sheppard had closed the gap and was looking to pounce as heavy lapped traffic was blocking the track, with cars in both grooves.

Lance caught a break on lap 18 as the caution flew, giving Lance a clear track. Another caution on lap 23 set up a 7 lap shootout, but Sheppard could never make the pass and had to settle for 2nd. Mike Provenzano, Pierce, and Brian Diveley completed the top 5.

“Brandon beat us at his home track last Sunday, so we returned the favor tonight”, said Lance in victory lane. “The track was perfect and you could run anywhere you wanted to tonight. We’ve really got this Rayburn dialed in here.”

Steve Shannon went flag-to-flag in the Limited Late Model feature for his 3rd win in a row. The race featured a scary wreck in turn 1 by Cody Wisher, who climbed the wall and knocked out a light pole. Wisher was uninjured. Jack Siegel, Jason Weyeneth, Jim Carmody and Brian Crebo, who rallied from an earlier spin, were the top 5.

“This is the first time the car felt real good, I think we’ve got it figured out”, Shannon said. “I knew Jack was back there, and he is awfully tough here so I’m thankful for this win.”

UMP Street Stock National Championship points leader John Farris dominated the Street Stock feature and extended his lead in his chase for both the National and track titles. Paula Harrison held off Chuck Barnes, Jr., who currently sits 2nd in both National and track points, for the runner-up spot. Aaron Near and Wally Zander rounded out the top 5.

Kenny Butterfield , who won a big race at Farmer City Friday night, made it 2-for-2 with his 8th win in the UMP Hornet division and may have cemented both the track and National Championship points titles. “This should get us closer to the National Championship”, Butterfield said after the race.

The Vintage cars made their first appearance at the track for the “Legends under the Lights” program and fans were treated to a great race between John Provenzano and Gary Koerning. Koerning and Provenzano traded paint midway through the race, with Koerning holding on for the win in his 1968 Chevelle. “That was a great race there with John”, Koerning told the crowd. “This track was great and we want to thank the promoters and fans for having us here.”

Austin Archdale made a last-to-first charge for the win in the Illinois Lightning Sprints. Archdale blew by race-long leader Brennan Gregory mid-way through the race for the win. “We didn’t run a heat, so we kinda threw a setup at the car we hoped would work and it turned out great.”

Action resumes at Peoria Speedway next Saturday, August 27, with Season Championship events.

LANCE, JR. DUELS DRAKE FOR 6TH STRAIGHT WIN AT PEORIA SPEEDWAY

(Peoria, IL) Steve Lance,Jr. has dominated at times this year at Peoria Speedway, but he had to earn it Saturday night at Peoria Speedway.

Drake started 3rd behind front row starters Todd Bennett and new track record-holder Bobby Pierce, who ripped off a 12.113 second lap in qualifying. As the green flew over the field, Pierce went to the top in turn one and Bennett slid out of the bottom groove just enough for Drake to pounce. Drake dove under Bennett and Pierce to make it 3 wide coming out of turn 2 and took the lead going down the back stretch.

Late-arriving Donny Walden made a great run , working into 2nd after a lap 8 re-start but his night ended on lap 11 as his engine expired, causing another caution flag. Drake led Lance, Jr. and Pierce through one more caution on lap 14 for Charley Hess and John Garnder, Jr.

Drake had struggled with lapped traffic, spinning Fank Shickel out down the back stretch earlier in the race, and it proved to be the difference in the end. On lap 24, the lapped car of Scott Schoener was running Drake’s preferred line on the bottom Lance, Jr drove to the top in turns one and two, and Drake got pinned behind Schoener coming out of two. Lance, Jr. made the winning pass down the back stretch and ended up with 2 lapped cars as a cushion for his 6th straight win. Drake finished 2nd with Pierce 3rd. Jason Jaggers made a terrific run, charging from dead last (20th) to 4th. Nathan Balenseifen completed the top 5.

“I think our car was faster anyway, but that lapped traffic was hard to get by on the bottom, said Lance, Jr. “Billy got held up there in two so I knew I had to make my move. We’ve really got this Rayburn hooked up here!”

Erik Bruce cruised to victory in the UMP Modified division, surviving 6 caution flags for the flag-to-flag win. 8th-starting Donovan Lodge finished 2nd, with 15th-starting Ray Bollinger 3rd, Steve Turner in 4th, and Derrick Doerr 5th.

“The car was really good tonight”, said Bruce. “It was a good night to be out front with all these cautions. It feels good to get a win”.

The Limited Late Model feature also featured 6 caution periods and plenty of mangled metal, but Steve Shannon jumped to the lead at the start over Jack Siegel and stayed out front for his 2nd consecutive win. Brian Crebo ended up 2nd,with Siegel 3rd, Matt Mills 4th, and Amanda Ellis posted a career-best 5th place finish.

“I want to thank my dad and grandpa, and everyone who helps me on this car”, Shannon said. “We are really getting this car dialed in. It was a long race with all those cautions.”

John Farris and Chuck Barnes, Jr, entered the night in a dead heat for 2nd in their chase for the UMP National Street Stock and Nothern States titles. Farris led flag-to-flag, with Barnes, Jr. ending up 2nd, followed by Paula Harrison, Wally Zander and Jamie Balenseifen. “This may put us in the lead (for the National Championship)”, said Farris. “Chuck and I were both only 9 points out so this may put us in first”.

UMP National Sport Compact points leader Kenny Butterfield dominated the Hornet division, extending his lead and getting one step closer to being a National Champion in a flag-to-flag win. Tommy Wisher finished 2nd, with Shane Kelly, Zach Bollinger and Todd Breithbarth rounding out the top 5.

“This sure helps our cause” Butterfield said. “The track was awesome and should lead to some good racing later tonight.”

BARNES, JR., FARRIS PUT ON A SHOW AT PEORIA SPEEDWAY

(Peoria, IL) Chuck Barnes, Jr. and John Farris are in a battle for the UMP National Championship, and the duo put on a show Saturday night at Peoria Speedway.

Barnes and Farris sit in 2nd and 3rd in the battle for the UMP National Street Stock Championship, and the battle raged on-track on a muggy evening. Farris started on the pole with Barnes, Jr. next to him on the front row, and Farris got the jump on the start. Barnes stalked Farris over the first 4 laps until a caution for Squoria Rivers slowed the action. On the re-start, Barnes challenged Farris on the inside of the track and the war began.

Barnes held the inside line and led on lap 5, with Farris taking the lead back on lap 6. Over the next 3 laps, they thrilled the crowd with a lead-swapping, side-by-side race until Barnes finally secured the lead for good on lap 9. Farris ended up 2nd, followed by Wally Zander, Greg Sauder and Rick Skelton.

“I couldn’t believe he slid up and left the bottom open on that re-start”, said Barnes in victory lane. “That was a terrific race and I think we only touched once on the backstretch. John’s a clean racer and this battle for the title is gonna be fun. The fans had to love that one.”

Steve Lance Jr. won his 5th straight UMP Late Model victory, but had to fight his brother Tim and Bobby Pierce for the win. Tim Lance got the jump on Pierce using the high-side as Pierce hugged the bottom of the track. Steve Lance followed Tim on the high side over the first 3 laps, and then followed Pierce in an attempt to find the fastest way around the racy quarter-mile. On lap 5, Steve Lance made the winning move with as he ran 3 wide and split the middle, taking over the lead in turn 3.

Steve Lance worked traffic masterfully as the race went caution-free and was never headed for the win. Pierce held on for 2nd, with Tim Lance, Jason Jaggers and Donny Walden completing the top 5. “I told our guys before the race that, starting 4th, we would probably have to win this thing in the middle of the track”, said Lance, Jr. “We’ve really got this Rayburn dialed in here.”

Ray Bollinger closed the gap in his quest for the UMP Modified National Championship with a dominating win in a race which began with a scary 7 car pileup on the backstretch. Bollinger was in 2nd place nationally, chasing Mike Harrison for the National title, and helped his cause with the win in the UMP Modified division. Bollinger survived 4 cautions and a line-switching Erik Bruce for the victory. Dale Munson, Dan Turner and Mike Chasteen, Jr. completed the top 5.

“This is sure going to help catch Harrison”, Bollinger told the crowd. “It sure helped to start on the pole, and it stinks so many guys got caught up in that wreck. I’m glad everyone was OK.”

Steve Shannon led flag-to-flag in a caution-filled and time shortened Limited Late Model feature, followed by Jack Siegel, Brian Crebo, Bobby Cowell and Jerry Carmody. “This is only our 4th race in this car, and I think we are getting it dialed in”, Shannon said. “I could hear Jack (Siegel) back there, and saw his nose a few times, but I knew if I held my line we would be OK.”

In the UMP Hornet class, the nations’ top 2 in points, Kenny Butterfield and Matt Maier respectively, started on the front row. Butterfield jumped to the lead, and Maier began to run the middle in an attempt to catch the current national points leader, but 5 cautions slowed the action and the race was called due to reaching the track-imposed time limit. The final caution was for a scary accident by Brent Terry, who lost a tire and barrel-rolled 3 times in turns 3 and 4. Remarkably, Terry was OK and described the frightening wreck as “fun”.

“Matt and I are good friends so its’ pretty cool to race with him for the championship”, said Butterfield. “I knew he would try the middle, so I just had to hold my line. He ran pretty well for his first time here.”

In the Illinois Lightning Sprint feature, Chaz Gregory dominated the race until lap 11, when a broken suspension piece ended his race on the front stretch. Brent Burrows inherited the lead, and was never seriously challenged for the win. Austin Archdale, Shane Morgan, Doug Kraft, and Brennan Gregory completed the top 5.

Action resumes next Saturday night at Peoria Speedway with a complete UMP DirtCar racing program featuring UMP Late Models, UMP Modifieds, Limited Late Models, UMP Street Stocks and UMP Hornets.

LANCE JR. TOPS JAGGERS IN PEORIA SPEEDWAY SLUGFEST

Bruce, Siegel, Barnes, Jr and Butterfield pick up wins

(Peoria, IL) On a muggy Saturday night in Central Illinois, and with a full moon overhead, the action was just as hot on-track.

Current UMP Late Model track point leader Steve Lance, Jr. steered his Rayburn to his 2nd straight feature win, but had to fight off Jason Jaggers in an entertaining race. Lance, Jr. immediately jumped to the top of the racetrack from his outside front row starting spot and began to open up a big lead over pole-sitter John Gardner, Jr. Gardner, Jr. was challenged by Shane Allen, who took over 2nd on lap 12. As Lance Jr. was driving away from the field, Allen slowed in turn 4 on lap 14, bringing out a caution and wiping out a huge lead.

Mike Mullvain inherited 2nd on the re-start, but was pressured by Jaggers, who made the pass the next lap. Lance had stayed on the bottom for the first time all night, and Jaggers closed quickly using the middle of the track. Jaggers pulled even on several occasions, but Lance decided to go back to the top of the track as Jaggers hugged the tires. Fans were treated to a classic-high-low battle until a lap 26 caution slowed the action.

On the re-start, Lance went high and Jaggers low as the war resumed. Lance jumped the cushion in turn 4 with 2 to go, but held off Jaggers for the win. Mullvain finished 3rd, with Charley Hess and Gerry Reeder, Jr. completing the top 5.

A worn-out Lance told the Peoria crowd, “That was a tough one there! I didn’t know what to do. I have 4 crew guys, and they were all giving me different hand signals on where I should run. I went to the bottom but Jason ran me down so I got back on top and jumped the cushion a few times. Give Jason a lot of credit, he gave me all I could handle and drove a terrific race.”

Erik Bruce returned to his winning ways in the UMP Modified division, but had to fight off Ray Bollinger, who tried every line possible to get by Bruce. Bollinger pulled even with Bruce on lap 16 and looked to have the lead until the 5th caution of the race on lap 16 slowed the action. Bollinger then had to fight off Mark Johnson, with a final caution forcing a lap 19 re-start. Johnson drove by Bollinger as the white flag flew, but could never catch Bruce and ended up 2nd. Bollinger, Donovan Lodge, and Dan Turner rounded out the top 5.

“We finally had a good night,” Bruce said. “We’ve had lots of bad luck, so hopefully this turns it around. We had a good car and a good starting spot, but the motor kinda stumbled there on that last re-start. We will take it, though.”

Jack Siegel fought off Brian Crebo in another caution-filled race to won his 7th Limited Late Model feature of the year. Siegel has dominated at times this year, but Crebo made him earn it as he pressured Siegel heavily over the last 5 laps.

“That was one long race with all those cautions”, Siegel said. “I didn’t think Crebo was that close but he hit my quarter panel there on the last lap so I knew he was there.”

Chuck Barnes, Jr. led flag-to-flag in the Street Stock division, but the race featured a race-long battle between Paula Harrison, John Farris and Terry Miller for 2nd. Farris ended up in the runner-up spot, with Miller, Harrison and Bobby Eskew the top 5.

“By my calculations, this win should put us first in the nation in (UMP) points”, said Barnes, Jr. “We finished 3rd last night and won tonight so we should be in the lead”.

Kenny Butterfield held off chief rival Jeremy Kingsley for his 7th Hornet feature win of the year, leading flag-to-flag. Zac Bollinger, Matt Musgrave and Brent Terry completed the top 5.

Fans will be treated to a double-header next weekend at Peoria Speedway with a regular UMP DirtCar Series racing program next Saturday, July 23. The 2nd Annual Kitchen Cooked Potato Chips “Sprint Car Summer Shootout”, featuring the Ideal Ready Mix Sprint Invaders Series, will headline the action on Sunday, July 24. UMP Modifieds, Illinois Lightning Sprints and Hornets will all be in action with the Iowa-based 360 Sprint Car Series.

BABB DUELS JAMES FOR PEORIA SUMMERNATIONALS WIN

(Peoria, IL) Shannon Babb won his 3rd UMP Summernationals race of 2011 and his 3rd career Peoria Speedway Summernationals win Wednesday night as the “Hell Tour” rolled through Central Illinois on a hot, muggy summer evening.

Wes Steidinger jumped to the lead from his pole position and immediately dove to the bottom of the race track as second generation driver Scott James of Lawrenceburg, IN, began to drive the top of the track. James got a run off turn 2 on lap 4, and took the lead down the backstretch. Babb sat in 3rd, but was pressured heavily by a rim-riding Jeep Van Wormer until Van Wormer jumped the cushion on lap 4.

. A lap 5 caution for Jack Sullivan slowed the field, and on the restart Babb began to pressure Steidinger for 2nd. Babb kept poking his nose under Steidinger for the next 5 laps until he finally got by Larry Reikert-owned car for 2nd on lap 10.

James began to encounter lapped traffic on lap 15, and Babb began to close the gap. Babb had closed onto James' back bumper by lap 22 and made the pass coming out of turn 4 on lap 24 as James slid to the middle trying to get by the lapped car of Mike Provenzano. Babb encountered lapped traffic again on lap 33, but James could never make the pass and ended up in 2nd, .488 seconds behind Babb at the checkered flag. James, in the Riggs Motorsports entry, ended up 2nd, followed by Matt Miller of Waterville, OH, Stedinger and Van Wormer.

“I had to work the middle there in traffic because the bottom was getting blocked”, said Babb in victory lane. “It’s always easier to be second in those situations in traffic. I was just waiting for my chance. Scott slipped up there a little in 3, and I jumped to the bottom and got by him. I want to thank all of the fans for coming out and supporting us in this heat”

38 Late Models took time at Peoria, with Babb setting fast time of 12.712. Van Wormer, Babb and Steidinger won the heat races, with Charley Hess winning the C Main. Rookie Mike Spatola won the B Main

Mike Harrison from Highland, IL extended his points lead in the Summitt Racing UMP Modified Summernationals, winning after an early duel with runner-up Gabe Menser.

Menser drove past pole-sitter Zac Oedewaldt on lap 1, but Harrison was the man on the move as he blasted around the top of the Peoria high banks. The 6th-starting Harrison had worked his way into 2nd by lap 4 using the top of the track, but a Derrick Doerr spin on the front stretch caused the yellow to fly on lap 5.

Menser pulled out to a small lead on the restart, but Harrison reeled him in by lap 7. Over the next 4 laps, the duo would thrill the packed crowd, running virtually dead even in a classic high-low battle. Harrison finally pulled away on lap 11 under the flag stand for the lead.

Menser was able to get right behind Harrison over the last few laps as Harrison began to push, but could never get a clean pass and had to settle for 2nd. Kewanne driver Ray Bollinger finished 3rd, with Brian Lynn of Mason City, and 18th-starting Denny Schwartz of Ashworth in 5th.

Harrison, who farms for a living, told the crowd: “Luckily we got done farming a week earlier than we thought, so we were able to do this deal. I watched the late models there and it looked like the top was the place to be so we gave it a shot and it worked out. The car kind of went away there at the end, but we’ll take it. I want to thank my crew for all their work this week.”

Harrison, Brian Lynn and Chad Goff won UMP Modified heat races. Erik Bruce and Donovan Loge won the Semi-Features.

Kenny Butterfield won his 6th feature of the year in the UMP Hornet division, leading flag-to-flag. Butterfield and Eric Wisher captured heat race wins.

Peoria Speedway roars to life again this Saturday, July 9 with a full UMP racing program.

LANCE, JR., LODGE, SIEGEL, FARRIS AND BUTTERFIELD WINNERS AT PEORIA SPEEDWAY

(Peoria, IL) Many of the usual suspects were in victory lane Saturday night at Peoria Speedway on a hot and steamy evening in Central Illinois. 4 of the 5 divisions saw repeat winners, with only Donovan Lodge in the UMP Modifieds the only first-time winner.

Steve Lance, Jr. started 3rd, but made a move down the backstretch to pass pole-sitter John Gardner on the first lap and was never seriously challenged in the UMP Late Model division. A lap 18 caution had erased a nearly straightaway lead for Lance as Todd Bennett had given chase, but Bennett could never close the distance and had to settle for 2nd. Mike Mullvain finished 3rd, with Roger Rebholtz and 15th-starting Charley Hess completing the top 5.

“We’ve been running real good lately”, Lance, Jr. said in victory lane. “We’ve been running these Rayburn cars a long time so we’ve got lots of laps here. The car is easy to drive. I really want to thank all the fans for coming out in this heat tonight. Whether you love or hate me, I really appreciate it. You guys are hardcore fans for sure!”.

Moline driver Donovan Lodge held off a race-long challenge from Gosport, IN ace Ryan Thomas for his first win of the season at the track in the UMP Modifieds. Lodge survived 4 caution periods and repeated attacks from Thomas for the win. Thomas finished 2nd, followed by Ray Bollinger and Erik Bruce, who both experimented in the high groove. Tommy Duncan rounded out the top 5.

“It really helped to start up front of our heat and the feature tonight”, said Lodge. “There were a whole bunch of good cars here tonight, so I wanted to get to the bottom and hold my line. It feels great to get a win here.”

Jack Siegel dominated the Limited Late Model feature, leading all 15 laps over Rob Bauman, Sr., Brian Crebo, Bobby Cowell Sr., and CJ VanBeveran. Kenny Butterfield picked up his 5th win of the season at the track (his 10th overall) in the UMP Hornets.

On Independence weekend, there were fireworks early in the Street Stock division as Chuck Barnes, Jr. and Paula Harrison tangled in their heat race. Harrison spun out going into turn 3, and Barnes was sent to the rear for rough driving. Visibly unhappy with the call, Barnes climbed out of the car at the judges’ stand and voiced his displeasure to Speedway officials. At intermission, Barnes requested the microphone and went on the PA system to apologize for his actions and tirade, with Harrison at his side.

As for the Street Stock feature, John Farris went 3-wide going into turn 3 on lap 1 with Harrison and Wally Zander to take the lead and drove away for the win. Harrison, Barnes, Jr., Zander and Virgil Nussel rounded out the top 5.

Wednesday night, July 6, the UMP DirtCar Late Model “Summernationals” will return to Peoria Speedway. The 40 lap “Hell Tour” feature will pay $5,000 to-win. UMP Modifieds will race for $1,000 to-win and UMP Hornets will also be in action. Weekly UMP racing resumes at the track Saturday, July 9.

PIERCE, BOLLINGER, SIEGEL, BARNES AND KINGSLEY WIN AT PEORIA SPEEDWAY....Controversial ending to Modified feature

(Peoria, IL) Bobby Pierce is beginning to like Peoria Speedway. The 14 year-old from Oakwood picked up his 2nd UMP DirtCar Super Late Model win of the year on a beautiful Wednesday night despite fighting an ill-handling race car.

The 30 lap feature began with front row starters Brian Diveley and Scott Schmitt going side-by side for the entire first lap, and the duo were door-to-door going down the backstretch on lap 2. As Diveley and Schmitt entered turn 3, they both slipped up the track, leaving the bottom groove open for Pierce, who had started 3rd.

Pierce dove on the bottom going into turn 3, making it 3-wide for the lead, and made the pass coming out of turn 4 on lap 2. Todd Bennett had followed Pierce on the low side of the track, and moved into 2nd by lap 4 and began the race-long chase of Pierce. Bennett chased Pierce as they entered lapped traffic on lap 13, but Pierce handled the traffic like a seasoned veteran and had a clear track again by lap 20.

Over the last 10 laps, Bennett could close on Pierce but could never make the pass and had to settle for 2nd as the 30 laps went caution-free. Billy Drake finished 3rd, with Tim Lance in 4th driving a Bob Gardner entry. 15th-starting Steve Lance, Jr. made a spectacular run to finish 5th.

I saw Schmitt and Diveley both slip up a little going into 3 there, so I dove underneath them and got the lead”, said Pierce about the winning pass. “The right front tire started giving up at the end there, so I had to steer with the brake to hold Todd off. We were lucky to get this win, this is great.”

The UMP Modified feature began with a bang as a 4 car pileup in turn 2 forced a complete re-start, with pole-sitter Butch Weisser getting the jump on the field. Weisser ran out to a comfortable lead as a terrific battle between Erik Bruce and Ray Bollinger developed for 2nd. Bruce was running the bottom and Bollinger was using the middle and top, beginning on lap 7. For the next 3 laps, Bruce and Bollinger would run nearly dead even until Bollinger finally made the pass for 2nd on lap 10 with a turn 3 pass.

Bollinger chased Weisser down as Weisser was getting slowed by lapped traffic on lap 14. After seeing Bollinger's nose, Weisser turned up the wick and began to drive noticably harder in lapped traffic in an effort to stave off Bollinger. On lap 17, Bollinger went to the middle and raced door-to-door with Weisser down the front chute. Bollinger finally made the pass stick coming out of turn 4 as the 2 laps to go flag flew.

Going into turn 1 on lap 18, Weisser got into the rear of Bollinger, spinning him around and bringing out the caution. Speedway officials penalized Weisser for rough driving and put him in the back of the field, but he elected to pull off the track. Bollinger held off a charging Bruce, who tried every inch of the track to get by Bollinger, but had to settle for 2nd. Mike Chasteen,Jr, Scott May, and Mark Johnson completed the top 5.

I don't know if Butch was mad or what, but he hit me hard there going into 1”, Bollinger said in victory lane. “I never touched him the whole race so I'm not sure what the deal was, but that is why I race here. The officials are not afraid to do the right thing, and it was clear he took me out.”

Jack Siegel dominated the Limited Late Model feature, leading flag-to-flag over Brian Crebo, who was right on his bumper as the checkered flag flew. Jim Carmody, Evan Fink and Chad Evans rounded out the top 5.

In the Street Stock feature, a first-lap pileup claimed front row starters John Farris and Wally Zander, along with Bob Simpson. On the re-start, 3rd starting Chuck Barnes, Jr, moved to the pole and led flag-to-flag for the win. Behind Barnes, a terrific battle for 2nd between Jamie Balenseifen, Andrew Funk and Virgil Nussel was raging. Balenseifen and Funk swapped paint on several occasions and showed their displeasure with each other on a lap 8 caution. The physical battle enabled Nussel to slip by on the last 2 laps for 2nd, with Balenseifen, Funk, and Farris, who came from dead last on the re-start, to finish 5th.

There were cars going everywhere there on the start, I can't believe I didn't get caught up in it”, Barnes said after the race. “I kept getting signals from the crew so I just kept it on the bottom. I want to thank everyone who helps me out for this win.”

The story in the Hornet feature was another battle between Jeremy Kinglsey and Kenny Butterfield, wth Kingsley leading all 10 laps for the win. Butterfield finished 2nd, followed by Eric Wisher, Matt Musgrave, and Tyler Benson.

It sure helps to have clean air like that”, Kingsley said of the open track he saw the entire race. “Keeping Kenny behind me was a big deal, he's been tough all year”.

LANCE BROTHERS SLUG IT OUT AT PEORIA SPEEDWAY AS STEVE, JR. PREVAILS

Bollinger, Siegel, Harrison, Butterfield, Archdale get wins on Fathers Day Eve

(Peoria, IL) Steve Lance, Jr. battled his brother Tim and Charley Hess, winning an entertaining 30 lap UMP Late Model feature on Fathers' Day weekend at Peoria Speedway Saturday night.

Tim Lance started outisde row 1 and jumped to the lead at the beginnng the race over pole sitter Jay Sparks using the very top of the track. By lap 7, Steve Lance,Jr had driven past Sparks and Mike Mullvain for 2nd, and began what would become a race-long chase of his brother, who was driving the top in turns 1 &2, and the bottom of 3 & 4 as his preferred line.

Tim began to encounter lapped traffic on lap 10, but was trapped on lap 13 behind a 3-way battle between Dick Taylor, Roger Rebhotlz, and Keith Piano which virtually blocked the track. The blockage allowed Steve to close the gap by lap 16 and the 2 ran nose-tail until clearing lapped traffic on lap 18.

Charley Hess, who had charged from his 8th starting spot , joined the battle using the low side exclusively, and took 2nd from Steve as he tried the middle on lap 20. The first caution of the race flew on lap 24, and on the re-start Steve jumped to the high side and sailed past Hess to take over 2nd. Running the top exclusively, Steve pulled even on lap 27, and then took the lead down the back stretch on lap 28. A Jason Jaggers spin on the front stretch negated the pass, however, bringing out the 2nd caution of the race.

On the re-start, Tim drove to the top to block his brother, but Steve turned left as they raced side-by-side down the backstrectch with Hess in tow. Steve drove to the bottom of the track in turn 3 and cleared Tim coming out of turn 4 as the white flag flew for the lead. Hess passed Tim for 2nd in turn 2, but could never close the gap on Steve. Hess finished 2nd, with Lance, Todd Bennett, and Richie Bell completing the top 5.

That was a lot of fun racing with my brother”, Steve said after the race. “I think I out-guessed them on tires, as we went harder so we were good over that long run. I knew he would try to block me on that re-start so I just turned under him and made it stick in 4. The fans had to enjoy that one!”

In the UMP Modifieds, Ray Bollinger led flag-to-flag, surviving 4 cautions for the win over Donovan Lodge, Butch Weisser, Mike Chasteen, Jr., and Mark Johnson. “We had the car set up to run the bottom so it was key for us to get a good start. I saw Erik's nose a few times so I knew I had to not make any mistakes”, said Bollinger.

Jason Weyeneth jumped to the start of the Limited Late Model feature event until lap 6, when Jack Siegel made a pass in the middle of the track for the lead on lap 6. Siegel had to hold off a charging Ryan Blair for the win. “I want to thank my brother for helping me out with the car, It's a family affair”, Siegel said in victory lane.

Paula Harrison picked up her first win of the year in one of the best races of the night in the Street Stock feature. Harrison started on the pole, but quickly found herself in a 3-way battle with veterans Chuck Barnes, Jr. and John Farris. After a lap 3 caution, Farris tried to drive under Harrison by the flag stand, but Harrison slammed the door shut as the two made contact. Farris began running the middle of the track and pulled even with Harrison on lap 6. Harrison and Farris ran dead-even over the next 4 laps until another caution 10 set up a 2 lap shootout. Harrison got a good start and held on for the win. Barnes, Farris, Bob Simpson and Virgil Nussel rounded out the top 5.

An excited Harrison could hardly describe the race as she sat in victory lane. “I can't believe I beat those guys!! I saw Chucks' nose there and me and John ran side-by-side for a long time there. Those guys are awful hard to beat so this is great!”. When asked about slamming the door shut on Farris on the re-start, Harrison replied “That's the way we play, John and I.”

Austin Archdale dominated the Illinois Lightning Sprint feature event, and shared a special moment in victory lane on Fathers' Day weekend with his grandfather, Peoria announcer Roger Sollenberger. “In all my years of coming down here, I never, ever thought I would be standing in victory lane with my grandson”, Sollenberger told the crowd as Archdale held the trophy. “This is a special night for us.”

The Hornet feature was another battle between Kenny Butterfield and Jeremy Kinglsey, who ran in a dead heat over the first 6 laps of the 10 lap feature until Butterfield assumed control on lap 7. Kingsley ended up 2nd, followed by Brent Terry, Tyler Benson and Matt Musgrave.

Action resumes next Saturday night at Peoria Speedway with a full UMP racing program.

PICKENS DUELS LOYET FOR POWRI VICTORY AT PEORIA SPEEDWAY

Felker, Bruce get wins as 2 drivers flip out of the ballpark

(Peoria, IL) New Zealand driver Michael Pickens captured his second consecutive Lucas Oil POWRi National Midget Series event as the series made its’ inaugural appearance at Peoria Speedway Saturday night.

Pickens, a three-time New Zealand and two-time Australian Speedcar Super Series champion, survived

a hard-fought battle with 2-time and defending POWRi Champion Brad Loyet for his second win in as many nights.

Pickens had taken the lead on lap 5 from 2008 POWRi Champ Brett Anderson and appeared to be cruising for a win. A caution on lap 12 tightened the field, and the 10th starting Loyet charged by Anderson for 2nd with a slide job in turn 4 on lap 19. Pickens had nearly a straightaway lead over Loyet when the caution flew on lap 22. Pickens got a terrific start, and took a commanding lead until another caution on lap 27 put Loyet on his back bumper again.

As the green flew on the lap 27 re-start, Loyet charged into turn 1 and slid past Pickens as they raced out of turn 2. Pickens re-gained the lead down the back stretch but Loyet threw another slide job at Pickens in turn 3 and nearly hit the turn 4 wall. Pickens had to check up for a split second as the 2 made contact, but turned the car left and drove past Loyet again at the judge’s stand. Pickens held on for a 2 car length win over Loyet, USAC star Jerry Coons, Jr., and Nick Knepper.

Pickens told the crowd: “I would like to thank my car owner for allowing me to race over here, without his support this wouldn’t be possible. That was a great race with Brad and the track was terrific. We had a great top groove to run. I’m only here for a few weeks, so we are trying to make the best of it.”

“Was that a great race or what?”, Loyet asked the fans after the race. “I was almost afraid to show my nose to Michael because I knew he would turn up the wick and he did. It’s fun to race with one of the best drivers in the world. The fans had to enjoy that one.”

Andrew Felker from Carl Junction, MO won his first POWRi 600 CC Mini-Sprint feature of the season over Trent Beckinger, who had won last night. Felker, who lives 5 miles from tornado-ravaged Joplin, MO told the crowd in victory lane: “It’s been a tough couple of weeks, but I want to thank my family and the fans for coming out tonight and braving the rain.”

The Mini-Sprint feature was red-flagged when Kyle Schuett nearly ended up in the parking lot, flipping over the wall and almost all of the way down the hill between turns 1 and 2. Schuett was uninjured, as was Midget driver Travis Berryhill. Berryhill wheel-hopped another car and launched out of the track in the middle of turns 3 and 4, resting next to a light pole which had already been knocked over earlier this season.

2010 Track Champion Erik Bruce won the UMP Modified feature over Tommy Duncan, who continues to post top 5 finishes. Duncan fought Donovan Lodge in a classic side-by-side battle over the first 3 laps of the 20 lap feature until taking control down the backstretch on lap 4. Bruce was using the high side of the track exclusively and had worked his way into 2nd with a pass of Lodge in turn 2 on lap 7.

A lap 7 caution bunched the field up, and Bruce immediately began to challenge Duncan, who was using the low side of the track. Brcue pulled even on lap 10 and they ran dead even until Bruce made the pass stick on the front stretch on lap 11. Bruce survived a lap 16 re-start and held off Duncan, Billy Tuckwell, Derrick Doerr and Matt Dillon for the $800 win.

“The high side was really working tonight for us”, said Bruce in victory lane. “A big thanks to the track crew who had to fight off heat and rain to give us a good track to race on. This feels good.”

Action resumes next Saturday night at Peoria Speedway with a full UMP racing program. June 15 will be NASCAR Night at the track, with Kenny Schrader and Kenny Wallace in action. June 17 the track presents an AMA Flat Track racing program.

LANCE,JR. DOUBLES UP IN “SPRING FLING” AT PEORIA SPEEDWAY

(Peoria, IL) Steve Lance, Jr. had twice the fun at Peoria Speedway Monday night, charging to victories in both the Crate and UMP Super Late Model divisions. Lance pocketed $3,000 for the two wins in the Chuck Barnes-promoted “Spring Fling”, which had been rained out Sunday night.

Lance dominated the Crate Late Model race, leading flag-to-flag in a 2-race old CJ Rayburn car. Lance used the race as a test session for the Super Late Model feature, trying out the high side while leading eventual Crate runner-up Evan Fink. Lance tested the top of the track on a night where the bottom was the preferred line and the move paid off.

14 year-old Bobby Pierce, who picked up his first career win at Peoria May 7, out-gunned Jason Feger at the start of the 40 lap UMP Super Late Model feature. Feger tried several different lines, and challenged Pierce in lapped traffic on lap 11. On lap 13, the duo split a lapped car coming out of turn 2, and tried the same manuver on John Gardner in turn 3. Pierce went to the top and Feger dove under Gardner out of turn 4, but Feger drove over the rear wheel of Gardner and his car rode on 2 wheels on top of Gardner as they crossed the start-finish line. Feger got unhooked in turn 2, and was scored in first as the caution flew for Jason Weyeneth.

On the lap 13 re-start, Lance,Jr. Made use of the double-file re-starts and drove to the outside of Feger in turn 3 and 4 to take the lead going down the backstretch. 2 more cautions could not slow Lance, Jr,, who held off Feger, Pierce, Kevin Weaver and Tim Lance for the $2,000 win. “It's nice to have 2 good cars”, said Lance, Jr. in victory lane. “Any time you can beat Jason, that's pretty good. He won a big race last night at Granite City, so we are happy to get 2 wins tonight.”

A season-high 129 cars stuffed the Peoria pits for the “Spring Fling”, including a stellar field of 43 UMP Modifieds.

Fairbury driver McKay Wenger led all 25 laps of the UMP Modified feature, holding off a race-long challenge from 2010 Peoria track champ Ray Bollinger and Butch Weisser. “I am so pumped up to win here!”, Wenger told the crowd after the $2,000 win. “I used to race go-karts here 8 years ago, so this is special for me to finally get a win. We have had a terrible year, so hopefully this will get us going.”

John Farris captured his second consecutive Street Stock feature event, passing Bob Simpson on lap 9 by the judges stand and holding on for the $300 check. Eric Wisher took the lead from Tommy Wisher on lap 4 of the Hornet feature, winning $300 as Shane Kelly finished 2nd.

Peoria Speedway will host the POWRi National Midget Series next Saturday, June 4. Micro Spints and UMP Modifieds will also be racing.

MULLVAIN, BOLLINGER, SIEGEL, FARRIS AND KINGSLEY WINNERS AT PEORIA SPEEDWAY

(Peoria, IL) Mike Mullvain can build a mean race engine, but he also proved at Peoria Speedway Saturday night he can wheel a dirt late model. Mullvain, who builds race engines for a living, utilized one of his own power plants to dominate the UMP Late Model feature, leading flag-to-flag for his first win of the season after starting on the pole.

Mullvain jumped to the start over Jeff Maher, and Todd Bennett instantly began to pressure Maher for 2nd.  Maher and Bennett ran side by-side through 4 laps and 2 caution periods until Bennett made it stick on lap 5.  Steve Lance, Jr., who started 18th, became the first driver to run the top of the track on lap 5, and began passing cars at will in an entertaining charge to the front. Schmitt jumped to the top also, and passed Bennett for 2nd on lap 7.

By lap 8, the rim-riding Lance had passed 12 cars and had charged into 6th. A lap 19 re-start saw Bennett try the high side, as Mullvain and Schmitt ran the bottom. Lance passed Bennett for 3rd on lap 23, but could never track down the lead duo as the high side began to fade. Mullvain survived 7 caution flags and held off Schmitt for his first win of the season. Lance, Bennett and Charley Hess completed the top 5.

“It looked like the bottom was the place to be, so I just wanted to get a good start and try to hold these guys off”, said Mullvain in victory lane. “I just want to thank everybody- my wife, kids, crew, the track, the fans. I even want to thank Mother Nature for allowing us to race. It feels good to get our first win this year.”

Billy Tuckwell and Ray Bollinger made up the front row of the UMP Modified feature and stayed side-by-side over the first 2 laps until a four car pileup in turn 4 slowed the action. On the ensuing restart, Tommy Duncan joined the battle and made it 3 wide on laps 3 and 4. Tuckwell took command on the low side on lap 6 as Bollinger and Duncan battled for 2nd. Bollinger cleared Duncan and was challenging for the lead again on lap 10, utilizing the middle of the track. Tuckwell and Bollinger would run dead-even for 2 laps until Bollinger made the pass down the backstretch on lap 13. Bollinger would survive 3 more cautions for the win. Tuckwell and Duncan ended up in 2nd and 3rd. Mike Chasteen, Jr., who skipped his high school graduation to race, ended up 4th. Mark Johnson, Eric Bruce, Chris Morefield, Floyd Jordan, Jr., Gary Scharp, and Derrick Doerr completed the top 10.

“I just kept looking around the track until my tires warmed up, and then we made our move. I knew Billy would race me clean“, said Bollinger on the winning pass. An emotional Bollinger dedicated the win in victory lane to his father-in-law, who had recently passed away.

Jack Siegel held off a race-long challenge by Jason Weyeneth for his 2nd win of the year in a flag-to-flag performance . “We really had the car set up well tonight”, said Siegel. “I want to thank my wife, who bought me 2 new tires this week”

Paula Harrison used her pole position to take the lead over John Farris in the Pro Street feature at the start. After a lap 2 restart, Farris challenged going into turn 1 and made the pass stick down the back stretch. Farris stopped the 2 race win streak by Chuck Barnes, Jr., who ended up 2nd, for the win. “We had to make a groove there to get by Paula”, Farris said in victory lane. “A huge thanks to my crew, who worked until 6:15 this morning getting this car back together after last night in Lincoln.”

Jeremy Kingsley won his second Hornet feature in a row, fighting Kenny  Butterfield over the first 3 laps until making a pass down the back stretch on lap 3. Butterfield, who leads the UMP Northern States points standings, finished 2nd. “We really didn’t have the car set up right, we thought it would be a lot slicker than it was, but we are happy for the win”, Kingsley told the Peoria Speedway crowd.

Action resumes next Saturday night at Peoria Speedway with a full UMP racing program. Next Sunday, May 29 will be the “Spring Fling”, featuring $2,000 to-win UMP Late Models, $2,000 to-win UMP Modifieds, $1,000 to-win Crate Late Models, and $300 to-win Hornets. A concert by the band 2mass denial will be held after the racing program concludes.

PIERCE GETS FIRST LATE MODEL WIN IN PEORIA THRILLER 14-year old nips Lance for his first SLM victory; Bollinger, Schoener, Barnes, Jr., and Kingsley get wins

(Peoria, IL) Angie Pierce got the ultimate racing Mothers Day gift on Saturday night at Peoria Speedway, watching her 14 year-old son Bobby take his first-ever Super Late Model feature in a wildly entertaining duel through traffic with former Track Champion Tim Lance.

The son of Dirt Late Model Hall-of-Fame driver and chassis builder Bob Pierce looked like a seasoned veteran, fighting lapped traffic and a rim-riding Lance for his first career Super Late Model victory after spending last season in the Crate Late Model division.

Steve Lance, Jr. jumped to the start over Todd Bennett as the field circled the inside of the track, and held on through 2 caution periods in the first 2 laps.  On lap 4, Tim Lance, driving a Rayburn owned by Russ Adams, became the first driver to run the high side of the track and chased down Bennett for 2nd on lap 6. As Lance continued to show his nose to his brother, Steve Lance started to block on the high side.

A lap 14 caution bunched the field back up, as both Lance brothers ran the top of the track and Pierce continued to hug the bottom. Pierce took second from Tim Lance on lap 20 and then took the lead down the backstretch on lap 22 in lapped traffic. Tim Lance passed his brother in traffic on lap 24 for 2nd, and caught with Pierce on lap 28. Pierce got caught by a lapped car down the backstretch, allowing Tim Lance to take the lead going into turn 3. Pierce bumped the lapped car to get by, and the duo was side-by-side as the white flag flew. The cars were even going into turn 3, but another lapped car slowed Pierce and it appeared Lance would drive away. As they entered turn 4, sparks flew as Lance hit the turn 4 wall, and Pierce slid under the lapped traffic. Pierce nipped Lance at the line by an estimated 3 feet. Lance, Jr. ended up 3rd, with Donny Walden and Jay Sparks completing the top 5.

“This is awesome to get my first win here”, said the younger Pierce in victory lane. “it’s only my second year in these cars, so I gotta thank my dad for his advice. We wanted to stay on the bottom the whole race, and that strategy paid off. Tim and I had a great race there at the end.”

Ray Bollinger dueled Mark Johnson over the first 7 laps of the UMP Modified feature, and then made a pass in the middle of the track on lap 8. Bollinger held off Tommy Duncan, Johnson, Donovan Lodge and Roger Cary for the win. “Everyone was running the bottom there so I kept looking at the middle to see if there was anything there’, said Bollinger. “Mark was slowing entering turn 1 so I went beside him and made it stick in turns 3 and 4. It’s good to get a win”

Steve Schoener held off Jack Siegel for a win in the Limited Late Model division. “Jack kept showing me his nose there so I had to get up on the wheel a little bit”, said Schoener. “The car was good and the track wasn’t bad either”

Chuck Barnes led flag-to-flag in the Pro Street feature, and gave credit to his crew chief in victory lane. “I want to thank my 15 year-old daughter Kylee for being my crew chief tonight. My brother had surgery this week so she took over and the car was great.”

The Hornet division was the second photo finish of the night, with Jeremy Kingsley nipping Kenny  Butterfield at the line for the win in a terrific side-by-side race. “Kenny has won like 5 in a row, so its’ good to finally get one under my belt”, Butterfield said.

Action resumes next Saturday night at Peoria Speedway with a full UMP racing program.

A WILD,ACTION PACKED NIGHT OF RACING AT PEORIA SPEEDWAY

Unzicker, Bollinger, Willis, Jr., BARNES, Jr., Butterfield take wins as Gardner sails out of the park

(Peoria, IL) A capacity crowd witnessed a wild, action-packed night of racing at Peoria Speedway Saturday night on a warm, summer-like April evening.

El Paso driver Ryan Unzicker picked up his 2nd straight UMP Late Model win at Peoria, dueling Kevin Weaver through lapped traffic, and holding off Mike Spatola for the win. “First off, Kevin Weaver was my childhood hero as a kid, so it was a thrill to race him like that”, said Unzicker in victory lane. “We had a great battle going there in traffic for awhile. The fans had to love that!”

Weaver had jumped to the lead on the high side of the track at the start of the feature, but the caution flew after just one lap, and then on the re-start. Lap 2 saw a high-low battle between Unzicker and Steve Lance, develop until 2 more cautions slowed the field.  The field got rolling again on lap 4 and the battle raged between Unzicker and Lance. Unzicker began to pull away from Lance using the high side and had caught Weaver in lapped traffic on lap 14.

Unzicker and Weaver put on a clinic on how to drive in lapped traffic over the next 5 laps, swapping the lead each lap. The duo thrilled the crowd , running 3 wide as they split traffic with Unzicker up top and Weaver on the bottom coming off turn 2  and ran side-by-side the whole time. Weaver began smoking on lap 19, with a caution flying on lap 20 for Richie Bell. Unzicker grabbed the lead on the re-start, and Weaver’s night came to an end with a flat left rear tire on lap 22.

Unzicker survived 3 more cautions, and a bonzai run by Late Model rookie Spatola, for his second straight Peoria victory. The rim-riding Spatola ended up 2nd, followed by Lance, 14 year-old Bobby Pierce of Oakwood, and fast qualifier Bret Sievert of Mukwonago, WI rounding out the top 5.

2010 Peoria track champ Ray Bollinger went wire-to-wire, winning the UMP Modified feature over Butch Weisser, Jay Ledford, Lance Dehm, and Mark Johnson. “We set up for the middle of  the track because I saw something there in our heat” said Bollinger. “I just tried to get to the middle first ,and it worked out. The track was great, you can run anywhere you wanted to.

Brad Willis, Jr. dominated the Limited Late Model Feature, fending off Jack Seifel, Evan Fink, Jim Sellner and Jason Weyeneth. Chuck Barnes, Jr. barely held off John Farris by a quarter car length at the line, nursing a smoking car to the win. “I want to dedicate this win to a friend of mine Lynn, who lost her dad this week”, said Barnes in victory lane. “The car started missing with about 3 laps to go and I barely held on there, but we will take it.

Kenneth Butterfield led all 10 laps, taking his first win of the season in the UMP Hornet division. “I want to thank my dad, who helps me out with the car” , said Butterfield. “We were hooked up tonight and the track was awesome”.

Racing had come to a halt midway through the program as Bob Gardner got his UMP Late Model out of the park in turn 4 during the Semi-Feature.  Gardner rode the wall into turn 3, then his car flew over the fence in the middle of turn 4, knocking out a light pole and a bank of lights. Gardner was uninjured, and racing resumed even though several lights were damaged.

Action resumes next Saturday night at Peoria Speedway with a full UMP racing program

APRIL IS “PARKINSONS AWARENESS MONTH” AT  PEORIA SPEEDWAY

(Peoria, IL) Peoria Speedway has proclaimed the month of April as “Parkinson’s Awareness Month” at the track, and has added additional fund-raising efforts for the “Don Bohlander Parkinson’s Research FundRACERS” charity. Promoter Curt Mottaz is proud to announce that all April events will include 50/50 drawings, along with various fund-raising efforts to benefit the Bohlander group. On Saturday, April 30, drivers will “Pass the Helmet for Parkinson’s”, with all proceeds going to Dr. Craig Cady and Bradley University’s neurological research program.

Parkinson's disease (PD) belongs to a group of conditions called motor system disorders, which are the result of the loss of dopamine-producing brain cells. The four primary symptoms of PD are tremor, or trembling in hands, arms, legs, jaw, and face; rigidity, or stiffness of the limbs and trunk; bradykinesia, or slowness of movement; and postural instability, or impaired balance and coordination. Parkinson’s cannot be detected and there is no cure for the disease.

“Don Bohlander and his family are passionate about Parkinson’s Research, and we fully support their efforts“, said Mottaz. “Parkinson’s is a terrible disease and we hope that the racing community in Central Illinois can help find a cure.”

The first race of “Parkinson’s Awareness Month” is this Saturday night, April 9, with UMP Late Models, UMP Modifieds, Limited Late Models, UMP Street Stocks, and UMP Hornets in action. Fans can log onto www.peoriaspeedway.com for more information. The new race-day phone number at Peoria Speedway is 309-357-3339. Gates open at 3:30 PM, with hot laps at 5 and racing at 5:30 Saturday night.

UNZICKER TAKES THE “BOHLANDER TRIBUTE” AT PEORIA SPEEDWAY

(Peoria, IL) El Paso driver Ryan Unzicker accomplished something Sunday night he had been trying to do for the last few years- beat Jason Feger in a big race at Peoria Speedway  by winning the UMP Late Model “Don Bohlander Tribute“ 50.

Fairbury driver Wes Steidinger, piloting a Larry Reikert-owned Rayburn, took the lead from his pole starting spot as the gren flag flew over the 20 car field. Steidinger looked strong and led until a lap 9 caution for a spin involving Scott Schmitt and Frank Heckenast, Jr. slowed the field. The 7th-starting Feger had driven in to the 2nd spot, and immediately challenged Steidinger on the high-side of the track on the double-file restart. Feger got a run off turn 2 and dove under Steidinger on lap 11 in turn 3 for the lead. Feger then dominated the middle of the race, driving through lapped traffic for a 4 second lead until a caution flew on lap 38 for Donny Walden re-set the field.

The 8th-starting Unzicker had moved into the runner-up spot utilizing the high line, and was actually closing in on Feger when the caution flew. On the lap 38 restart, Feger broke an axle going into turn 3, handing the lead to Unzicker. Unzicker survived a lap 42 caution and held off Mike Spatola for the $4,000 victory. 15th-starting Brian Shirley finished 3rd, with 10th-starting Rodney Melvin and Billy Drake, who started 12th, completing the top 5.

“I hate that something happened to Jason, I was a little worried when he got in front”, said Unzicker in victory lane. “But something happened to him, and we got the lead. He is so tough to beat here, but  we will take it”

Unzicker, who won the night before at Macon,  had bolted 4 hard tires on his Mastersbuilt Race Car for the 50 lap feature, but had to adjust when the Peoria track crew watered the top side prior to the UMP Modified feature. “We had 4 hard tires on, but when they put that water on top, we put soft tires on all but the right rear and that might have won us the race”, said Unzicker. “It’s just such an honor to win a race named after one of the greatest drivers off all time in Don Bohlander. This is a special win for us.”

Butch Weisser led flag-to-flag in the UMP Modified feature event, holding off Donovan Lodge, Mike Chasteen, Jr. and Brian Lynn for the win. “The track was really slick up top, so we wanted to get a good jump and protect the lead on the bottom and it worked out”, said Weisser. Decatur driver Joe Reed drove a 9-year old car to the win in the Hornet division.

Next Saturday night, April 9, will be the first regular UMP program at Peoria Speedway. UMP Late Models, UMP Modifieds, Limited Late Models, UMP Street Stocks and UMP Hornets will be in action.

Unzicker Wins Bohlander Tribute at Peoria

April 3,2011   Ryan Unzicker capitalized on Jason Feger’s misfortune Sunday evening to win the Don Bohlander Tribute race at Peoria Speedway. Unzicker inherited the lead after Feger broke an axle following at caution on lap 39. Unzicker held off Mike Spatola to claim the $4000 to win, 50 lap race. Don Bohlander is a 6 time Peoria Speedway track champion and winner of 6 Illinois State championship races. Bohlander will be inducted into the National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame this fall in Florence, Kentucky. Wes Steidinger jumped out to a commanding lead before a caution fell on lap 9. After the caution, 7th starting Feger moved to the bottom of the track to take the lead as Steidinger fell off the pace with brake problems. Feger held a straight away lead over the field before approaching slower cars, allowing Unzicker to close up. Unzicker took the lead on the 39th lap and a caution on lap 42 gave first year late model driver, Spatola, a chance to take the lead. Unzicker pulled away after the caution, but Spatola managed to close up at the end. Brian Shirley, Rodney Melvin, Billy Drake, Brian Dievley, Tim Lance, Brandon Sheppard, Donny Walden, and Frank Heckenast Jr. completed the top 10. Feger bested the 30 UMP late models with a 12.414.

Butch Weisser won the 20 lap caution marred feature over Donovan Lodge, Mike Chasteen Jr., Brian Lynn, and McKay Wenger. Joe Reed claimed the 10 lap Hornet race over Kenny Butterfield and Jeremy Kingsley as new track promoter Curt Moltaz ushered a new era for the Peoria Speedway.

“BOHLANDER TRIBUTE” KICKS OFF PEORIA SPEEDWAY SEASON WITH A BANG

(Peoria, IL) A new era dawns at Peoria Speedway this weekend as the track kicks off its’ 2011 racing season this Sunday, April 3, with the 4th running of the “Don Bohlander Tribute” race for Parkinson’s Research.  The 50 lap UMP Super Late Model feature pays $4,000 to-win and $300 to-start, with Bloomington driver Jason Feger the defending race champion. UMP Modifieds will race for $800 to-win and UMP Hornets will chase a $250 top prize as well.

New Promoter Curt Mottaz has the facility ready to go after acquiring the high-banked quarter mile oval from Sherrie Hamilton over the winter. Mottaz looks to keep up the momentum from a spectacular 2010 season at Peoria, with last years’ “Bohlander 50” garnering national attention as one of the best races of the year.

The 2010 “Bohlander” race featured 7 lead changes among 3 different drivers. UMP stars Ryan Unzicker and Brian Shirely waged a classic high-low battle and swapped the lead 5 times until Unzicker hit the wall on lap 37, forcing Shirley to check up. Feger seized the opportunity and took the lead, only to be overtaken by Unzicker on lap 41. Feger re-captured the lead the next lap, and held on for the win as battles raged all over the track.

The race is in honor of 10 -time Peoria Speedway Track Champion and 7-time Illinois State Champion Don Bohlander, who will be inducted into the Dirt Late Model Hall-of-Fame at Florence Speedway in Kentucky on August 14.  Bohlanders’ career spanned 45 years, with 350 feature wins at 25 different tracks and 5 track championships. Bohlander also ran 2 years with USAC in 1974 and 1975, competing on asphalt on NASCAR facilites Daytona, Talladega, Pocono and Michigan.

Bohlanders’ career ended in 1998 and in 2001 he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease.  Parkinson's disease is a progressive degenerative disorder of the central nervous system which can result in death and has no known cause. The Bohlander family, spearheaded by Don’s wife Valarie, has become passionate about raising awareness of Parkinson’s Disease. The grass-roots effort has raised over $40,00 for Parkinson’s Research, with all proceeds going directly to Bradley University’s Parkinson’s Research program.

The Bohlander Parkinson’s Research FUNDRacers will be on hand at the track Sunday night. Event T-shirts will be for sale, and the 50/50 drawing will benefit the charity. Lap sponsors are still available for $25, and can be secured by calling (309) 347-6929.
An open practice session for all classes is scheduled for Friday, April 1 from 6-9 PM. Gates open at 5, and pit admission is $10. Grandstand admission is free of charge. The concession and beer stands will be open.

On Sunday, Pit gates open at 3:30, with grandstands opening at 4 and hot laps at 5 PM. Admission is $20 for adults, $15 for senior citizens, and $5 for 8-15 year olds. Kids under 8 will be admitted free of charge. Pit passes are $30. Entry fee for the Late Models is $50. “BOHLANDER 50” TO BENEFIT PARKINSONS RESEARCH ON APRIL 3 AT PEORIA SPEEDWAY

The 4th Annual “Don Bohlander 50” will be held on Sunday, April 3 at Peoria Speedway. The 50 lap feature for the UMP Late Models will pay $4,000 to-win and $300 to start. The race will benefit Parkinson’s research and will kick off the 2011 season at the high-banked quarter-mile oval.

The race is in honor of Don Bohlander, one of Peoria Speedways’ all-time great drivers, who will be inducted into the Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame at Florence Speedway in Kentucky on August 13. Bohlander was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2001 and the Bohlander family has become passionate about raising money for Parkinson’s research. Parkinson's disease is a progressive degenerative disorder of the central nervous system which can result in death and has no known cause.

To date, over $40,000 has been donated by “Team Bohlander” to Bradley University and its team researching the cause and cure of Parkinson’s disease. The effort is completely grass-roots, spearheaded by Bohlanders’ wife Valarie. “We do this all on our own”, said Val Bohlander. “We have contacted the National Parkinson’s research foundation but haven’t gotten any help from them yet.”

The group is seeking lap sponsors for the race at $25 per lap. T-shirt sponsors are also needed for $500, $250, or $100. The team kicks off its’ fundraising efforts on March 19 with “Pasta for Parkinson’s” at Goodfellas Pub and Pizza, 1414 N 8th Street in Pekin, IL. The event kicks off at 3 PM and tickets are available for $6. There will also be an auction and live music. For more information and to donate, fans can call 347-6929

As for the race, several of the top UMP stars are expected, including Jason Feger, Dennis Erb, Brian Shirley, Kevin Weaver and Ryan Unzicker. The race will follow the World of Outlaws Series “Illini 100” at LaSalle Speedway, which pays $20,000 to-win April 2. New Peoria promoter Curt Mottaz is expecting several drivers to make the short drive from LaSalle to Peoria to compete.

The 2010 "Bohlander 50" was a classic and garnered votes for "Race of the Year". - here is last years report of the race:

FEGER TAKES DRAMATIC “BOHLANDER 57”
(Peoria, IL) On a night where one of Peoria Speedways’ greatest drivers was being honored, one of the tracks native sons took home the win in one of the best races in Peoria Speedway history.
Bloomington driver Jason Feger, who began his career in the Sportsman division at the track, won the "Don Bohlander 57" Saturday night. Feger took the $4000 winners' share after a race-long war for the lead thrilled the capacity crowd.
Pole sitter Ryan Unzicker jumped to the lead and immediately dove to the bottom groove with Dennis Erb, who started 2nd, in tow. Erb was passed on the high side by Brian Shirley on lap 13 as battles raged all over the track. Unzicker and Shirley would wage a classic high-low battle, swapping the lead 5 times and running side-by-side until lap 37. On lap 37, Unzicker slid off the bottom in turn 2 and slid into the wall, briefly collecting Shirley, who had to check up. The 3rd- running Feger saw the contact and dove to the bottom of the track, passing them both. Unzicker would fight back and take the lead back from Feger on lap 42, with Feger taking the lead for good the next lap.
Tim Lance had hung in the top 5 all night, but made his move late, passing Unzicker on lap 46 to finish 2nd. Kevin Weaver ended up 3rd, with Unzicker 4th and Erb 5th.
“It feels good to get the monkey off my back”, said Feger in victory lane. “Unzicker and Squirrel (Shirley) were having quite a battle there and I just saw an opening and went for it. This is only the second race on this Bob Pierce car, and we set fast time last night and won our heat before we got rained out. I think we have a pretty good car here. It means a lot to me winning this race named after a legend, I remember coming here when I was a kid . That was one heck of a race!”
Jason Wagner captured the UMP Modified feature when race-long leader Erik Bruce jumped the cushion in turn 4 with 5 laps to go. Bob Simpson took the Street Stock feature, with Scott Van Oppen winning the Hornet feature.
