2007 Season Closes Out at Quincy Raceways
By Jack Walbring
The 2007 racing season drew to a close at Quincy Raceways Sunday, Sept. 9 with Mark Burgtorf, Michael Long, Rob Wilsey and Bill Winkle taking home the last feature event wins of the year during Dollar’s Today Night at the Races.
Keith Pratt jumped into the early lead of the Budweiser IMCA Late Model main event at the drop of the green flag and held the lead until Mark Burgtorf powered by on lap nine. Burgtorf then cruised his way to a four and a half second lead, while lapping up to the seventh place runner at the checkered flag. Pratt held off a hard charging Jason Frankel for second with Frankel in third, Terry Gallaher in fourth and Billy Genenbacher in fifth. Pratt and Sam Halstead were the heat race winners while Burgtorf scored his eighth trophy dash win of the season.
The final night of the 2007 season for the Miller Lite Modifieds was a bittersweet night for one competitor and a record setter for another as 30 year veteran driver Henry DeLonjay participated in his final event as he is retiring from driving after this season. DeLonjay was honored at intermission by the track and spoke of his love for his fans and how they have meant more than all of his thirteen track points championships. Michael Long added to his record breaking season by taking another dominating win in the main event. DeLonjay and David Wietholder tried in vain to derail Long but were unable to do the trick. Wietholder settled for second followed by Terry Cox in third, Chris Spalding in fourth and DeLonjay in fifth. DeLonjay, Tony Dunker and Wietholder were the heat race winners while Long picked up his
seventh Advance Trading Trophy Dash win of the season. Long’s incredible season concluded with his track record sixteenth feature win and his thirty sixth race win at Quincy this season including heats and dash wins.
Rob Wilsey got to the front of the Hobby Stock main event in four laps from his third row starting spot and then held off Jarrod Richie to take his first ever feature event win at Quincy. Richie settled for second followed by Steve Carlin in third, Rich Wagy Jr. in fourth and Chris Rees in fifth. Wagy and James Leffew were the heat race winners.
Bill Winkle made very good use of this pole position start in the Hornet main event as Winkle held off the lap after lap pressure of the top five finishers. Winkles feature event win was his first ever as he dedicated it to his son Bryce Baker who was injured in a Hornet event crash a few weeks ago. Winkle won over Zach Bruenger, Jordon DeLonjay-Rice, Steven DeLonjay and Levi Long as the top five crossed the finish line so close that a large tarp could have covered them up. Long and Winkle were the heat race winners.
The 2007 racing season has come to a close with a successful run by first year owner’s Mike Karhoff and Tony Rhinberger. Details about the 2007 Awards Party will be released soon.

Burgtorf Bags Quincy Raceways Deery Brothers
By Jack Walbring
Sunday evening September 2, looked like it would be a great night for racing at Quincy Raceways with the temperatures in the eighties and a pit area crowded with thirty five Sunoco Deery Brothers Summer Series Late Models and a good field of competitors in the other divisions during Rick’s Transit Repair Night at the Races.
Terry Neal took the lead at the drop of the green flag and led lap one but Mark Burgtorf was on a mission as he blasted past Neal at the start of lap two into the lead. Burgtorf then set sail to a comfortable lead as the battle for the second spot raged between Neal, Lonnie Bailey and then Jason Frankel. Burgtorf worked lapped traffic easily and worked his way through the field up to the eighth place runner on lap forty four when the only caution flag of the event came out for a tire on the track in turn number two. The yellow flag closed up the field with Jason Frankel in second, Terry Neal in third and Lonnie Bailey in fourth. Burgtorf and Frankel charged out from the pack on the restart with Burgtorf slowly opening up one second lead at the checkered flag on lap fifty. Frankel settled for second followed by Kevin Tomlinson in third, Justin Reed in fourth and Jeremy Grady in fifth. Frankel, Lonnie Bailey, Burgtorf and Gary Russell took the heat race wins with Darrel DeFrance and Jerry Weisenberger winning the B-Mains. Burgtorf’s win was his eighteenth in Deery Brothers wins tying him with Rob Toland for fourth on the all time win list.
Shawn Deering may have lead the first circuit of the twenty five lap Miller Lite Modified feature but after that it was all Robbie Reed as Reed dominated the rest of the way to the checkered flag. David Wietholder made a valiant effort to give Reed a challenge but Wietholder fell victim to mechanical problems on the eighteenth circuit and watched the final laps from the pits. Reed was unchallenged the rest of the way to the checkered flag opening up a three and a half second lead over Joe Bliven in second. Chris Spalding grabbed third followed by Joe Hooper in fourth and Steve Theivagt in fifth. Reed, Bliven and Frankie Wellman Jr. were the heat race winners.
Aaron Brocksieck drew the pole position for the Hobby Stock twenty lap main event and made good use of it as he led all the way to the checkered flag. Rich Wagy challenged Brocksieck for the top spot through the first eleven laps but Steve Carlin came through the field and got by Wagy for second on lap twelve. Carlin then put the pressure on Brocksieck but had to settle for second at the checkered flag followed by Wagy in third, Chris Rees in fourth and Jared Richie in fifth. Wagy and Rees were the heat race winners.
The Hornet division main event was scared with way to many problems as only three cars finished the lap limited event at eleven laps. Levi Long took the win over Joel Kerr and Richard VanderMaidden. Lew Aikman and Long were the heat race winners.
The 2007 racing season comes to an end this next Sunday, September 9 at Quincy Raceways. 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa and Quincy Raceways are hosting a two day Fast Track Challenge event on September 8 and 9 for the IMCA Late Models with the main event for the IMCA Late Models paying $800 to win and $125 to start. The pole sitters in the Late Models at both Quincy and Burlington will have the opportunity to take the Challenge to drop to last at the green flag and if they can win the feature event they will receive a $500 bonus on top of the $800 winner’s purse. All non Qualifiers will be paid $100 at both Quincy and Burlington for the IMCA Late Models. 34 Raceway will be offering the Challenge to Stock Cars and Hobby Stocks with Quincy also offering the challenge to the Miller Lite Modifieds. The Miller Lite Modified feature event will pay $500 to win, Hobby Stocks $250 to win and the Hornets $150 to win at Quincy. Open Modified tires will be legal for the Modifieds again for this season ending event. Call the Quincy Raceways Hotline at 217-224-4100 or the track office at 217-224-3843 or visit Quincy Raceways online at www.quincyraceways.com for more information.
