Moyer Claims Fairbury’s Finale

Fairbury, IL. 8/30/08 a capacity crowd gathered at the Fairbury American Legion Speedway Saturday night for the season ending 19th annual Prairie Dirt Classic. Race fans were treated to one of the most thrilling races in resent history as Hall of Famer Billy Moyer took the lead on the 49th lap to claim his 4th PDC win. Polesitter Don O Neal led the field to the green flag with Moyer, Kevin Weaver, and Eric Smith trailing. 11th place starter Wes Steidinger and 12th place Dennis Erb Jr. starter found the bottom to their liking as they slowly made their way thru the field, while the rest of the drivers preferred running the top. Moyer moved ahead of O Neal with current UMP national point leader Erb Jr. following. While working lapped traffic Erb was able to pull along side of Moyer several times, but never made a clean pass. For Moyer who won the previous night at Farmer City in their $5000 to win special, he brought home $10,000 + in the 60 lap event. Erb Jr., O Neal, Smith, Steidinger, Weaver, Mark Burgtorf, Daren Friedman, Kyle Logue, and Donny Walden completed the top 10.

The UMP sportsman class opened the nights racing with a 15 lap feature. Polesitter Rick Thomas took the lead for the start and battled with fellow teammate Joel Funk during the course of the event. After a caution in the closing laps, Thomas bobbled enough allowing Funk to slip by and take home his 10th win of the year.  Thomas, Terry Worth, Loren Haberkorn, Jason Unzicker, Scott Hatzer, Shane Hetherington, Mike Stirewalt, Jeff Hamilton, and Kent Harmon were the top 10 finishers.

The 2008 racing season ended with a 20 lap UMP modified race and track champion Dave Porth led the entire way to pick up his 5th win of the year. Due to the late models running before and the rubber that was laid down if any of the modified drivers tried the top of the speedway they went to the back. The bottom was the only way around the track. Porth, current national point leader Jeff Leka, Jeb Friedman, Jeff Curl, Jim Farris, Jason Hastings, Darcy Wey, Dennis Wilson, Jay Ledford, and Kevin Hastings rounded out the top 10 finishers as the back to back UMP national track of the year completed another successful year.

MOYER SWEEPS THE WEEKEND

Billy Moyer traveled from Arkansas to Illinois this weekend and left a whole lot richer.  The Batesville, Arkansas driver followed up his Farmer City 50 win on Friday night and a $5000 payday with a win in the 19th annual Prairie Dirt Classic at the Fairbury American Legion Speedway.  Moyer for his win took home $10,000 which was sponsored by Lynn Chevrolet Buick in Pontiac.  Moyer took the lead on lap 49 of the 60 lap feature from Don O'Neal of Martinsville, Ind. and held off a late charge from Carpentersville's Dennis Erb to win by less than a car length.  Erb came from a 6th row starting spot to finish second, followed by O'Neal, Shirley's Eric Smith and Fairbury's Wes Steidinger rounded out the top 5.

Champions Night at Fairbury

Fairbury, IL. (8/23/08) Saturday at the Fairbury American Legion Speedway trophies were presented to the champions in each class. Drivers did not have to worry about chasing points, just get down and race.

2008 track champion in the street stock class, Darin Kohler started on the pole for the 15 lap feature event. Kohler led all the way to pick up his 3rd win of the year. Gary Barnes had to battle several contenders early before pulling away for 2nd.David Billingsley, Darrel Lehigh, and Nick Montalta completed the top 5.

Jason Unzicker broke the stranglehold held by the Funk/Thomas team (team 23) to pick up the win in the 15 lap UMP sportsman class. Joel Funk battled through the field and had a shot when a caution came out with 3 laps to go. Unzicker was able to hold on for his 3rd win and first since June. Track champion Joel Funk, Rick Thomas, Loren Haberkorn, Jeff Semmons, Paul Graf, Andrew Funk, Scott Hatzer, Richard Craven, and Dustin Mounce completed the top 10.

Since the 2004 summernational race at Fairbury. That is how long it’s been since Jay Ledford has visited victory lane. Ledford survived 4 caution flags and a bid by Matt Bachman to pick up the win in the 20 lap UMP modified race. Bachman chance ended when he got to high in the cushion which allowed Ledford to pull away. Kevin Hastings, Dennis Wilson, track champion Dave Porth, Bachman, Jason Hastings, Jeb Friedman, Lance Dehm, Tommy Duncan, and Dave Sandage rounded out the top 10.

Wes Steidinger put on a clinic in the 30 lap UMP late model race to pick up his 5th win at Fairbury and 8th overall. Steidinger said in victory lane it was a dream for each driver to end up in victory lane on the last night of racing at Fairbury, meaning the Prairie Dirt Classic. Steidinger used the race as a tune up for the $10,000 to win season ending race. Jr. Shickel, Eric Smith, Kevin Weaver, Richie Bell, track champion Daren Friedman, Derek Chandler, Ryan Unzicker, Joe Harlan, and Jim Felker rounded out the top10.

132nd Annual Fairbury Fair Race Action

Fairbury,IL. (8/16/09) One of Illinois oldest county fairs continued their tradition as the Fairbury American Legion Speedway hosted stock car racing during the 132nd Fairbury Fair. It was the final night for drivers to pick up track points and only one of the 4 classes had their champion determined.

Action started off in the UMP street stock class. Darrin Kohler entered the night with a 16 point lead over Billy Wicker. Kohler started on the outside pole for the 15 lap feature and Wicker in the 10th spot. Kohler took the lead at the start of the main. Following a caution at the halfway mark, polesitter David Billingsley gave Kohler a bit of a run , but Kohler turned back Billingsley for his 2nd win of the year and first track championship in his career. Kevin Lenzen, Tom Legner, Terry Miller, Billy Wicker, Gary Barnes, Joseph Hillman, Nate Kroll, and Alex Clubb completed the top 10.

Joel Funk entered the night with his 2nd straight championship already wrapped up. Rick Thomas battled step sons Joel and Andrew Funk early in the 15 lap UMP sportsman race. Thomas brought out the first caution of the night with a spin out and was relegated to the tail end of the field. Joel Funk the inherited the lead with Brother Andrew and Gary Turpin waiting in the wings. Andrew’s night ended when his engine went sour with 4 laps to go. The caution gave Turpin a shot at Joel. Turpin was able to pull along side Joel several times, but could not complete the pass. Joel Funk picked up his 9th win at Fairbury this year. Turpin, Shawn Diggs, Loren Haberkorn, Jason Unzicker, Rick Thomas, Scott Hatzer, Steve Kool, Chris Eden, and Shane Hetherington were the top 10 finishers.

42 UMP modifieds checked in for their 20 lap feature. McKay Wenger came in with a 7 point lead over 2 time track champion Dave Porth. Wenger qualified a disappointing 21st, while Porth was 5th. Wenger finished 2nd in his heat race while Porth won the quick 8 heat race. Polesitter Porth took the lead for the start with Jay Ledford and Jim Farris amoung the early contenders. 12th starting Wenger drove his heart out, running the very top of the speedway, knowing he only needed to finish one spot within Porth to claim the title. Wenger quickly moved up to the 4th position and had to battle with Farris, Ledford, and current national point leader Jeff Leka. The quartet exchanged the runnerup spot numerous times, while Porth only had the slower cars to get around. Porth was able to win the battle and war as he picked up his 4th win and 3rd straight championship. Ledford, Wenger, Farris, Leka, Lance Dehm, Jason Hastings, Darcy Wey, Matt Bachamn, and Jeff Curl rounded out the top 10.

Defending track champion Daren Friedman entered the race with a 13 point lead over Derek Chandler. Friedman’s night got off to a bad start as he hit the wall during qualifying. The car had body damage, suspension damage, and the rearend had to be replaced. A lot of man power got his car back to running and it looked to be running ever stronger. Eric Smith has been on a roll at the area speedways as of late. Smith took the lead and battled with Ryan Dauber early in the race. Chandler has had some motor problems as of late and had a borrowed motor in the car for the night. Chandler was running in the 5th spot until suddenly slowly, after he regained speed the motor was a little sour. 10th starting Friedman drove as if he was out for the win instead of point chasing. He worked his way up to the front and ran out of laps before he was able to contend with Smith for the win. Smith was able to pick up his 2nd win in a row and erd of the year at Fairbury. For Daren Friedman, he was able to claim his 2nd straight UMP late model title. Ryan Dauber, Jimmy Dehm, Joe Harlan, Donny Walden, Scott Bull, Richie Hedrick, Derek Chandler, and John Provenzano completed the top10.

Next Saturday will be champion’s night as the 2 time UMP national track of the year presents the top 10 in each division. Also the will be an adult dash for cash for those over 21. Classes running that night will be late models, modifieds, sportsman, and street stock. Gates open at 3, back gates at 5. hotlaps at 5:45,time trials at 6:30, and racing at 7:30.

Smith Wins Dramatic Fairbury Feature

Fairbury,IL. (8/09/08) With 2 weeks remaining for drivers to secure track points, the war is still undecided for 3 of the American Legion Speedway’s classes.

Racing began with the UMP street stock drivers running a 15 lap feature. Billy Wicker got the lead for the start and appeared to be on his way to his 1st win at Fairbury. Wicker had a 2 car length lead over the field when caution came out with 3 laps to go. After the green came back out, Brandon Kessinger overtook Wicker to win for the 5th time this year. Wicker, current point leader Darrin Kohler, Tom Legner, David Billingsley, Kevin Lenzen, Nick Montalta, Al Gray, Gary Barnes, and Don McCarty rounded out the top 10.

Joel Funk has all but secured his 2nd straight track championship in the UMP sportsman class. Funk took the lead at the start and held off a determined bid by Jason Unzicker to win his 8th race at Fairbury. Unzicker had to contend with Andrew Funk and Rick Thomas as they swapped 2nd spot several times. Unzicker, Thomas, Andrew Funk, Tim Fitzpatrick, Loren Haberkorn, Dustin Mounce, Dan Flessner, Mike Stirewalt, and Shane Hetherington completed the top 10.

Entering the UMP modified race defending track champion Dave Porth held a 22 point lead over his closet challenger McKay Wenger. Gary Cook Jr. took the lead at the start of the 20 lap feature with fast qualifier Wenger and Matt Bachman to tow. Wenger broke away from Bachman and the battle had begun between Cook and Wenger. Both drivers were running the top of the speedway, Wenger was able to pull along side Cook several times, but Cook was able to hold onto the lead. Finally Wenger took the lead for good on the 12th lap. Wenger, who normally runs at the top, changed his line to the bottom; Wenger was able to open a 5 car length over Cook and held on to take a popular victory in front of his hometown fans. Cook, Bauchman,Jason Hastings, Jeb Friedman, Joel Funk, Jim Farris, Dave Porth, T.D. Burger, and Jay Ledford rounded out the top 10. With the win, Wenger was able to overtake Porth by 7 points for the point lead.

In the 30 lap UMP late model main event, Wes Steidinger took the lead with Eric Smith trailing. The two veteran drivers pulled away from the pack and exchanged the lead during the 1st half of the feature. On the 12th lap, Steidinger jumped the cushion and Smith retook the lead. Smith soon approached slower cars and Steidinger was able to close back up to Smith. Steidinger maneuvered by Smith on the 23 lap and quickly built a 5 car length lead. As the flagman held the checkered flag in hand, Steidinger slowed in the middle of turns 3-4. Smith was able to slip by and claim his 2nd win of the year. Jr Shickel, Daren Friedman, Steidinger( victim of a lost driveshaft) , Kevin Weaver, Scott Bull, Jay Sparks, Joe Harlan, Jimmy Dehm , and Derek Chandler were the top10. Entering the night’s race, Chandler, who had engine failure the previous night at Farmer City, held a 10 point lead over Friedman. Friedman was able to take the point lead by 13 points as Chandler was forced to run a engine that lacked horsepower.

Awesome Night of Racing at Fairbury

Fairbury, IL. (8/02/08) Despite lower than usual car counts, it was a term I heard used quite often Saturday night at the Fairbury American Legion Speedway, “AWESOME!!!”

The race fans were treated by the annual visit of the Illinois Vintage Cars as well.

Herb Shannon Jr, won the Vintage Car trophy dash and heat race. Before the vintage cars took to the track for their 15 lap feature, Art “Fireball” Fehrman presented the 2nd annual Eli “Spud” Schlipf memorial award. Schlipf was one of the pioneers in getting racing started at Fairbury. This year the award went to multi track champion and an area legend Jack Tyne of Streator. Jack paced the field in his famed number 89 during parade laps. Billy Knippenburg Sr. took the lead at the start of the feature with Heb Shannon Jr and John Provenzano following. Knippenburg slowed on the track which allowed Provenzano to move to the point. While “Lil” John’s car was hugging the bottom Shannon Jr. was working the middle and top grooves to add another trophy for the night. Shannon’s quest ended on lap 13 when his car began to overheat. Provenzano, a former track champion and current late model competitor drove the last 2 laps in his 1946 Mercury Coupe to a 2 car length win over 1987 track champion Bill Knippenburg in his 1970 Nova. 3rd went to Danny Shannon of Charlotte N.C. in his 1932 Ford, followed by Donnie Harmann Jr. in a 1955 Chevy, and Larry Robb in his 1971 Ford Torino.

The UMP street stock class brought the most cars to the track. Outside front row starter Kevin Lenzen paced the field at start of the 15 lap main. Lenzen running the top groove battled door handle to door handle with Terry Miller. Just as Miller took the lead on the 5th lap, caution fell and Miller was place back to 2nd. As the green flag was waved, Lenzen changed his line to the bottom in order to stop Miller’s bid. Miller countered by going to the top of the speedway and got past Lenzen on the 6th lap Brandon Kessinger, along with Lenzen and Jay Hamilton each made a run at Miller, but Miller managed turn back his foes. Hamilton, Lenzen, Kissinger,Tom Legner, Billy Wicker, Darrell Lehigh, Nick Montalta, Eric Gaus, and Darrin Kohler completed the top 10. Heat race winners were Legner, Lenzen, and Miller. The semi feature went to Kohler.

The UMP sportsman class brought the lowest car count of the night, but the action was fast and furious. Gary Turpin led the 1st lap before Jason Unzicker took over and led the next lap. 4th place starter Rick Thomas running the top of the track overtook Unzicker on the next lap. Thomas was challenged by Unzicker whose car was gripped to the bottom and Joel Fun, who followed at the top. Funk got by Thomas on lap 10 held on to lead the rest of the way. Unzicker, Thomas, and Andrew Funk were all together and finished in that order. Turpin, Loren Haberkorn, Tim Fitzpatrick, Mike Stirewalt, Chris Eden, and Dan Flessner completed the top 10.Heat winners were Unzicker and Turpin.

The UMP modified division ran a 20 lap feature and before a lap could be completed George Aimone and point contender Jeff Curl were eliminated a track incident. Again outside is the place to be as Jeb Friedman took the lead. Friedman ran the middle groove while McKay Wenger was on the edge at the top. Wenger finally overtook Friedman on the 4th lap, while current point leader Dave Porth soon began to set his sight on Wenger. Several early cautions flew which prevented Porth from over taking Wenger for the lead. Wenger got into the marbles and that allowed Porth to slip into the lead. Wenger and Porth battled side by side with Wenger able to be scored the leader at the start/finish line. Wenger appeared to be headed to his 1st Fairbury win of the year, but again Wenger jumped the cushion and Porth took the lead with 2 to go and Porth picked up the win. Wenger, Jim Farris, Jay Ledford, Matt Bachman, Kevin Hastings, Darcy Wey, Friedman, Justin Delong, and Dennis Wilson rounded out the top 10. Wenger set fast time with a 14.215 and heat races went to Farris and Wenger.

While the Chicago Cubs seek to end their 99 year drought of winning the World Series, another drought ended in the 30 lap UMP late model race. Derek Chandler got the jump on pole sitter Scott Bull at the start of the race a held on for his 1st career late model win. The win did not come easy as Chandler held off many a challenge. Chandler kept his car at the top the entire race while  Bull, Jr. Shickel , and Joe Harlan moved up to challenge for the lead. While the trio was racing each other Chandler was able to open up a small lead. At the end a blanket could have been thrown over the top 5 as they were that close. Chandler, a 2nd generation driver of famed racer Don, Harlan, Shickel, Bull, and John Provenzanp were the top 5. The 2nd 5 cosisted of Daren Friedman, Jay Sparks, Donny Walden, Aaron Ricketts, and Mike Provenzano. Scott Bull set fast time with a 12.76. Heat races went to John Provenzano and Bull.

Racing action continues next Saturday with 5 divisions of racing. There will be free ice cream for all the kids. Pit gates open at 3, back gate open at 5, hot laps start at a new time of 5:45, qualifing begins at 6:30, and racing action kicks off at 7:30 at the 2 time UMP national track of the year, the Fairbury American Legion Speedway.

Fairbury Speedway 8-2-08

It was only a matter of time before Derek Chandler of Pontiac won his first late model feature.  The talented young driver from Pontiac edged out Joe Harlan and Frank Shickel Jr. to earn his first feature victory ever in a late model.  Chandler's crew knew it too and had a little surprise waiting for him when he got back to his trailer after the race.  Team 35 are avid Cubs fans and just like Cub fans they raised the "W" flag on the hauler as he came into the pits.  The "W" flag had Derek's name inscribed on it along with "Feature Wins" and a little mark under it for his first one.  The racing was 4 wide coming to the flag with Harlan and Shickel and Fairbury's Scott Bull trying to find a wedge of daylight.  Chandler edged Harlan by half a car length to earn his first ever win.

Polesitter Terry Miller took the lead at the start and was never serious challenged to claim his 1st win at the track.the race went caution free and Miller was able to build a straight away lead. Joseph Hillman, Darrin Kohler, Brandon Kessinger, Billy Wicker, Steve Maisel, David Billingsley, Eric Gaus, Robert Turner, and Gary Barnes were the top 10 finishers.

The UMP sportsman drivers have provided the fans with some of the best racing of the year. Andrew Funk took the lead and battled brother Joel and Gary Turpin the entire race. Joel was able to pull along side of Joel several times, but was not able complete the pass. Gary Turpin finished a car length back, followed by Joel, Rick Thomas, Jason Unzicker, Steve Kool, Chris Eden, Loren Haberkorn, Curt Vincent, and Mike Stirewalt completed the top 10.

The UMP modified drivers ran a $750 to win for 25 laps. Mckay Wenger led the field to the green flag and bolted to the lead. Drivers ran the top, middle, and bottom trying reeel Wenger in. Lance Dehm who has struggled this year with a new car and always a pleasure to watch running the highside, never gave up. The top of the track began to work and Dehm pulled along side Wenger on the back stretch of the final lap. As the 2 drivers got to the checkered flag, Dehm was able to edge Wenger at the line for his 1st win of the year. A dejected Wenger settled for 2nd, tour point leader Jeff Leka was 3rd, followed by Jeb Friedman, Dave Porth, Wes Steidinger, Jim Farris, Darcey Wey, and Jason Hastings.

The nights action ended with a 40 lap $2000 to win for the late model drivers. Outside starter Kevin Weaver got the jump on Ryan Dauber at the start and looked like he was on his way to an easily win. A caution with 5laps to go gave Daren Friedman a chance to take the win. Friedman did get along side Weaver several times, but Weaver was able to hold Friedman off. Dauber, Dennis Erb Jr., Wes Steidinger, Steve Sheppard Jr., Brian Shirley, Joe Harlan, Eric S mith, and Aaron Ricketts rounded out the top 10.

NOTES- Terry Miller, one of the top street stock drivers in the area and point leader at Lincoln Speedway claimed his 1st career win at Fairbury. Andrew Funk and Rick Thomas switched cars for the night’s races. Joel Funk is one of the top challengers for the UMP national sportsman title. Dan Flessner a former Hornet driver is now piloting the car formally driven by Mike Zalaker in the sportsman class. To say Lance Dehm’s season has been a struggle might be an understatement. He has preserved and with a crew that hasn’t given up; along with assistants from Dave Rudisill it might be turning around for the veteran driver. Miss Darcey Wey has had her share of problems this year. But a positive attitude by her and team brought her a strong 8th place finish. Wes Steidinger drove a car normally driven by Eric Bruce in the modified race. Gary Cook Jr. after winning the previous week in the modified race underwent surgery to remove a “mass” in his nasal cavity. His family is awaiting test results. Wishing Gary a speedy recovery. Kevin Weaver got his 3rd win of the week, as he won Monday night at Highland for their fair race and Friday at Farmer City as part of the Monster Midwest Tour. Before the nights races the track honored a real hero. Fairbury’s Brian Munz , a firefighter lost his life in the line of duty. While the American flag and Missing in Action flag flew at half staff, Scott Bull carrying the American Flag and Aaron Ricketts carrying the Fire Department Flag in their cars; paraded around the speedway during the national anthem. My sympathy goes out to Brian’s family, friends, and members of the fire department.

Gibson City's Kevin Weaver continued his success of Central Illinois Tracks after winning Friday night at Farmer City, "The Flatland Flash" picked up right where he left off winning the $2000 prize at the Fairbury American Legion Speedway.  What looked like an easy win for Weaver changed with 5 laps to go when a caution came out.  Weaver was dominating the race up until that point.  Then with five laps to go, Daren Friedman of Forrest challenged Weaver on every lap, only to have the Flatland Flash pull away until the final corner where Friedman actually was ahead of Weaver coming out of turn 4, but Weaver won the drag race to the line to win by a nose over Friedman with Dauber a close third.

Bad Moon Risin Over Fairbury July 19

Fairbury, IL. (7/19/08)  An early Saturday morning rain created for some rough track conditions, although the track maintenance staff did their best. Also factor in temperatures in the 90’s caused some tempers to show. There was a full moon over the Fairbury American Legion Speedway and it creates some karma.

Action began in the UMP street stock class as they ran a 15 lap feature. Darrin Kohler and Brandon Kessinger raced side by side for the first half of the race before both dropped out with mechanical problems. 9th place starter David Billingsley then inherited the point and then held off the challenges from Gary Barnes to win his first race of the year. Barnes settled for 2nd, followed by Nick Montalta, Billy Wicker, Joseph Hillman, Eric Gaus, Don McCarty, Nate Kroll, D J Malone, and Mitchell Steinquist.

The 15 lap UMP sportsman race was a slugfest between Joel Funk and Jason Unzicker. Funk lead the first 2 laps before he bobbled in turn 2 allowing Unzicker to lead the next 2 laps. Funk recovered to take the lead for the remaining laps to pick up his 6th win at Fairbury this year. Unzicker, Gary Turpin, Scott Hatzer, Loren Haberkorn, Curt Vincent, Dustin Mounce, Andrew Funk, Shane Hetherington, and Shawn Diggs completed the top 10.

Like the first 2 races of the night, the 20 lap UMP modified race provided its share of excitement. Polesitter Jason Hastings and Gary Cook Jr. raced side by side for the first 4 laps before Cook and Dave Porth made contact bringing out a caution. Hasting led the next 11 laps, while Cook sticking to the bottom stayed on Hastings Bumper. Cook powered by Hastings to lead the remaining 5 laps and picked up his 4th win at Fairbury. Jeb Friedman, Hastings, George B. Aimone, T D Burger, Kevin Hastings, Justin Delong, Lance Dehm, Dave Porth, and Jeff Curl rounded out the top 10.

The AFCO KidsModz made their debut for a 10 lap contest. 2nd generation driver Bobby Pierce led all the way to score the win. Kyle Hammer, Heidi Goodman, and Zac Bunten rounded out the field.

Pole sitter Eric Smith took the lead at the start of the 30 lap UMP late model feature. 4th place starter Ryan Dauber worked his way to the front on the 6th lap to take his 2nd win in a row and 4th of the year at Fairbury. The battle was behind Dauber as Smith, Daren Friedman, Jr. Shickel, and Derek Chandler exchanged positions. Smith, Shickel, Chandler, Friedman, Jay Sparks, John Provenzano, Mike Provenzano, Ryan Unzicker, and Jayme Zidar were the top 10 finishers.

The nights racing ended with a 10 lap UMP hornet race. Before a lap was completed Allen Line rolled his car in turn 2. He managed to get his car running. Outside starter Jim Wilson led the first 2 laps before Axle Wicker took over for 1 lap. Devin Brandt made his first start at the American Legion Speedway a successful one as he picked up the win. Eric Wilson, Tyler Griswold, Danny Cool, Axle Wicker, Nick Lee, E J Gregory, Bob Althouse, Joe Malone, and Scott Cupples ended up as the top 10.

Mars Masters Fairbury’s Summer National

Fairbury,IL. (07/05/08) 48 drivers from 8 states gathered at the Fairbury American Legion Speedway Saturday night as the track played host to the 16th stop of the UMP summer national tour.

Summer national point leader Dennis Erb Jr. set overall fast time at a 13.415. 5 heat races were run. Heat race #1 was won by Steve Sheppard Jr. over Ryan Unzicker and Dennis Erb Jr. the 2nd heat was won by Jordon Bland over Ryan Dauber and Eric Smith. The 3rd was won by Darren Miller over Randy Korte and Jason Feger. Heat race #4 was taken by Jimmy Mars over Derek Chandler and Daren Friedman. The last heat race was won by Brian Shirley over Will Vaught and Brian Birkhofer. Two C mains with the top 3 from each driver moving onto a B main. The first was won by Mark Burgtof over Justin Shaw and Jason McBride. The second was won by Don O Neal over Jim Felker Jr. and Rocky Griffin. Pole sitter Brian Shirley paced the field at the start of the 50 lap main event as Jimmy Mars quickly moved around Steve Sheppard Jr. Mars immediately pressured Shirley for the front spot. A caution fell on the track as last years Prairie Dirt Classic winner Brian Birkhofer stalled on the track. Just as Mars had taken the lead on lap 5 caution again came out for Jordon Bland’s spin out in turn 1. Shirley was placed back to the front for the restart. Mars hounded Shirley, trying the top and bottom of the track. Finally on lap 11 Mars moved to the inside of the speedway to take the lead. Mars began to stretch his lead over the field as Shirley had to contend with Darren Miller. A caution came out on the 27th lap for Wes Steidinger’s flat tire gave the drivers another shot at Mars. It proved to be no help as following the caution; Mars checked out and built a straight away lead over Shirley and Miller. Mars went uncontested the remainder of the race to pick up $10,000 and his first summmernational win on this years tour. Mars said after the race, “I had a feeling the track’s surface was taking rubber, so I tried to get to the front as quick as I could.” For Mars it was his 4th $10,000 win at Fairbury in the last 4 years. Shirley, Miller, Ryan Dauber, Steve Sheppard Jr., Billy Moyer, Eric Smith, Derek Chandler, Ryan Unzicker, and Will Vaught completed the top 10 finishers.

The 20 lap UMP modified race started with Jim Farris leading the 1st lap before last years track champion Dave Porth motored by. After a caution on lap 3, McKay Wenger moved to 2nd position and set sail on Porth. Wenger running the high side of the speedway made a valiant attempt to take the lead from Porth, but Wenger bobbled several times and Porth was able to open up a lead. A jubilant Porth picked up his 2nd win of the year at Fairbury.Porth and his crew had to work overtime for the win. The frame broke during hot laps and during his heat he suffered a broken axel. Wenger, Farris, Gary Cook Jr., Tim Hancock, Jeb Friedman, Jay Ledford, Tommy Duncan, Dennis Wilson, and Jeff Curl rounded out the top 10.

In the 15 lap UMP sportsman feature, pole sitter Joel Funk took the lead at the start of the race followed by Andrew Funk and Jason Unzicker. A hard charging Gary Turpin soon joined in and took over 2nd spot with 10 to go. As J. Funk led the race, Turpin could not shake off Unzicker. A caution flag with4 laps to go gave the drivers another opportunity at J. Funk. As Joel Funk led the rest of the way, Turpin battled with Unzicker as the 2 drivers entered turn 3 Unzicker climbed the wall and lost several positions in the final run down. Defending track champion Joel Funk got his 4th win of the year. Turpin, Rick Thomas, Andrew Funk, Dustin Mounce, Unzicker, Loren Haberkorn, Paul Graf, John Barnard, and Shawn Diggs completed the top 10.

NOTES: the largest crowed of the season gathered at the speedway. Wes Steidinger (11th) and Daren Friedman (13th) the last two late model track champions were to of the local drivers to finish the race. Friday night at Farmer City Derek Chandler blew his motor. The team made quick repairs following the Farmer City race and picked up a respectable 8th. Also at Farmer City, Daren Friedman picked up the win in the late model event. At Lincoln Speedway on Sunday Joel Funk again took the win. Pontiac driver T.D. Burger, a regular at Lincoln currently sits 10th in the track’s UMP modified class. Next week at Fairbury, is the annual running of the Curt Piercy Memorial 40 lap sportsman race, sponsored by the Pit Stop Cafe

UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Night 16: Mars Continues Mastery Of Fairbury American Legion Speedway

FAIRBURY, IL – July 5, 2008 – By Kellen Burns/DIRTcar Racing P.R. –

When the UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals tour visits Fairbury American Legion Speedway, Jimmy Mars is at the top of his game.

The 36-year-old driver from Menomonie, Wis., showed his mastery of the quarter-mile oval once again on Saturday night, racing to victory in the track’s 50-lap Summer Nationals event for the third time in the last four years.

A winner of Fairbury’s Summer Nationals A-Main in 2005 and 2006, this year’s tour date turned out to be no different for Mars.

Mars, who started third, drove by Steve Sheppard Jr. of New Berlin, Ill., for second early in the feature. He then set his sights on Chatham, Ill.’s Brian Shirley, the race’s polesitter.

Mars and Shirley waged a great battle for the top spot, with Mars trying low and high to get around. Mars finally found something in the middle groove of turns three and four and overtook Shirley on lap five, but a caution flag for a slowing Jordan Bland of Campbellsville, Ky., negated the move.

Mars instantly applied pressure to Shirley again on the restart. Shirley repelled the bids until lap 11, when Mars drove his No. 28 to the inside of Shirley and gained command for good.

“I had a feeling (the track surface) was going to rubber, so I was trying to get to the front to get the lead as soon as I could,” said Mars. “It worked out – twice!”

Mars was in control for the remainder of the distance, building as much as a full straightaway lead before lapped traffic slowed him. A caution flag on lap 27 gave him clear track and he had no trouble during the race’s second half.

Mars attributed the dominant run in part to how well his machine responded to race conditions.

“The car was excellent, it was flawless,” said Mars, who made his first visit to the Summer Nationals RacingJunk.com Victory Lane in his second tour appearance of 2008. “I could run on the inside of (Shirley) and the outside of him.  It was a good race.”

Mars, who earned $10,000 for his seventh career Summer Nationals triumph, was followed to the finish line by Shirley. The driver known as ‘Squirrel’ held off a charging Darren Miller of Milledgeville, Ill., to place second.

After starting from the pole, however, Shirley wasn’t happy with a bridesmaid finish.

“It was a tough one to swallow because you don’t want to lose,” said Shirley. “All and all, it wasn’t a bad night.”

Shirley was strong on the low side of the track early in the event, but he couldn’t find a groove to stay out front of Mars in the end.

“He had a better car,” Shirley said of Mars. “I tried to momentum his line and just couldn’t do it. We’ll take it and we’ll move on.”

The runner-up finish did move Shirley into the UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals points lead after 16 events. He unofficially grabbed a four-point edge over defending champion Dennis Erb Jr. of Carpentersville, Ill., who lost five positions on the final lap due to engine woes and finished 12th

Miller, who started fifth, made some moves early but found it difficult to move around late in the race. He settled for third.

“It just rubbered up – a one-lane deal,” said Miller. “I about had Shirley (for second). I got clear up beside him. I would have had to go into one and bang pretty bad (to complete the pass). I’m not really into doing that when it’s rubbered up like that.”

Miller knew, however, that Mars was certainly the class of the field.

“We weren’t near as good as Jim was,” said Miller.

Ryan Dauber of Tonica, Ill., scored an ’08 Summer Nationals-best finish of fourth, while Sheppard completed the top five.

Forty-eight cars entered the event, which saw Erb set fast time in the group qualifying session with a lap of 13.41 seconds.

Heat winners were Shirley, Sheppard, Mars, Miller and Bland. Mark Burgtorf of Quincy, Ill., and Don O'Neal of Martinsville, Ind., captured the C-Mains, and Billy Moyer of Batesville, Ark., topped the B-Main.

The UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals continues on Sunday night (July 6) with a $6,000-to-win event at Quad City Raceway in East Moline, Ill.

Patience Pays Off For Fairbury Winners

Fairbury, IL. (6-28-08) Saturday night at the Fairbury American Legion Speedway was the halfway point of the season and produced a very exciting night of racing. Action took place in 4 UMP sanctioned divisions. In addition, the Raminator monster truck was on hand for an exhibition of car crushing entertainment.

The street stock class was the first event of the night. A caution on the opening lap knocked out contender Terry Miller, as Joe Brown and Robert Turner rode the front stretch wall; leaving Miller to collect debris and a flat tire. Outside starter Brandon Kessinger was able to take the lead on the opening lap and was never seriously challenged as he collected his 4th straight win. Kevin Lenzen, Nick Montalta, point leader Darrin Kohler,Tom Legner, Orin Naramore, Joseph Hillman, Jay Hamilton, and David Billingsley rounded out the top 10.

The sportsman class took to the speedway for a 15 lap battle next and that it was. Polesitter Jason Unzicker led the first 2 laps before surrendering the lead to Joel Funk. Funk had to battle with teammates Andrew Funk and Rick Thomas early in the race. Unzicker droped out on the10th with rear end problems. While Joel was able to open a lead Andrew, Thomas, and Scott Hatzer fought it out for 2nd. Thomas fell out on the last lap while Joel Funk was able to hold off a hard charging Hatzer. Andrew Funk, Curt Vincent, Loren Haberkorn, Rod Rusher, Tim Fitzpatrick, Greg Kimmons, Shane Garrison, and Ed Bright completed the top 10.

Polesitter McKay Wenger took the lead at the start of the 20 lap modified feature and looked like he might be on his way to his first win of the year at Fairbury. Wenger built a 10 car length lead over the field, while there was a heated battle for 2nd among Jim Farris, Kevin Hastings, and Jeff Curl. A caution fell came out on the 16th lap enabling the drivers a last ditch opportunity at Wenger. While Wenger was running the top of the speedway, Curl running his patented bottom groove, took over 2nd and reeled in Wenger. Coming off of turn 4 on the last lap Curl was able to get by Wenger to win his first race of the year by a ½ car length. The win broke a streak of 3 straight 2nd place finishes for Curl at Fairbury. Wenger, Dave Porth, Farris, Hastings, George B. Aimone, Jeb Friedman, Justin Delong, Jay Ledford, and Ben Hulse were the top 10 finishers.

With the summernational race at Clarksville, Tn. Canceled several of the drivers made it to Fairbury for their upcoming race. Ryan Unzicker, Ryan Dauber, and Scott Bull raced hard for the last 10 laps, sometimes side by side while treading their way thru slower traffic. The trio kept the fans on their feet while Bull held a slight lead. While working the lapped cars, Dauber got by Bull at turn 2 and posted his 2nd win of the year. Unzicker moved past Bull coming off of turn 4 to take the runnerup spot. Derek Chandler, Jr. Shickel, Eric Smith, Richie Hedrick, Daren Friedman, Donny Walden, and John Provenzano rounded out the top 10.

NOTES: 29 street stocks, 21 sportsman, 32 modifieds, and 29 late models turned out on a very racey, prepared track. Richie Hedrick ran his new Mastersbilt race car in hot laps and found a few bugs that needed to be worked out. He broke out his older car and 5 laps into the feature reinjured his thumb for the 2nd time this year. McKay Wenger had a new motor from Hovis Race Engines. Aaron Ricketts suffered mechanical problems in his heat race and was finished for the night. Joel Funk drove the car normally driven by Rick Thomas , while Rick drove the car of R.J. Gall. Scott Williams(sportsman), Paul Graf(sportsman),Chris Wakely(modified), and Bill Reiniche were making their first runs of the year. Next week Hell Tour 08 comes to the track as the speedway host a 50 lap $10,000 to win summernational. Also on the card will be modifieds and sportsman.
