Terry Phillips Dominates at Sedalia to Claim
Missouri State Fair Championship
|
Buckner, MO (August 18th,
2008)-Terry Phillips roared past teammate Jeremy Payne on lap 11 and never
looked back to claim the win in the O'Reilly MLRA portion of the Missouri
State Fair Championships at the historic Sedalia State Fair Speedway.
Payne would maintain the second spot in the final rundown with Omaha,
Nebraska veteran John Anderson settling for third. 5-time MLRA Champion Al
Purkey captured the fourth spot, while Jeremy "Smackdown" Grady rounded
out the top 5.
Phillips was the class
of the field all night as he charged from his fifth row starting
position in his heat to finish second and garner an outside front row
starting position for the feature. Phillip's young protege, Payne also
started outside the fifth row in his heat but managed to squeak by
Carter Lake, Iowa's Mike Collins to win his heat and occupy the pole for
the 30 lap Late Model Main Event by virtue of the passing points system
utilized by the O'Reilly MLRA. Payne would set the early pace as
Phillips and Anderson followed closely behind. A couple of early
cautions stacked the field but Payne was able to pull away on each
restart until Phillips rocketed by in his Andy's Frozen Custard, Don
Babb Motorsports, Hatfield Racing Engines GRT coming out of turn two on
lap 11.
Payne continued to ride
in the second spot with Anderson in tow, but could gain no ground on
Phillips. A long green flag run allowed Phillips to slice and dice
through the lap traffic putting many very good race cars a lap down. A
caution on lap 28 allowed the field one final chance with Payne and
Anderson bunched up on Phillip's bumper on the restart, but it was not
to be on this night as Phillips cruised to the win. Al Purkey, driving a
Bill Koons owned car sporting his familiar #33 had a great run advancing
from his ninth starting position to finish in fourth, while Story City,
Iowa's Jeremy Grady also had an impressive run finishing in the fifth
spot. Veteran Nebraska driver Joe Kosiski wheeled his familiar red #53
to the sixth position in the final rundown while Adrian, Missouri's
David Turner captured the seventh spot. Jason "Bodee" Bodenhamer was
eighth, while Andrew McKay, all the way from Minneapolis, Minnesota came
home in ninth. Lancaster, Missouri's Chris Smyser rounded out the Top
10.
Heat Race Winners were
David Turner, John Anderson, Jeremy Payne, and Jeremy Grady. Marine,
Illinois' Mark Voigt captured the win the B-Main to advance to the main
event. Full Results are listed below.
The next event for the O'Reilly MLRA presented by Lucas Oil will be at
the beautiful Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Missouri next Saturday

Terry Phillips Captures the Win in The Jack Vaughn Memorial at The Adrian Speedway |
Adrian, MO (May 17th)-Springfield, Missouri's Terry Phillips captured the $3,000 win in the O'Reilly MLRA Jack Vaughn Memorial Saturday night at the Adrian Speedway. Phillips won his heat and started on the pole leading all 40 laps, but had to withstand repeated challenges from John Anderson and Denny Woodworth to take the win.
Denny Woodworth got within striking
distance once the two got into lap traffic with John Anderson glued
right to Woodworth's bumper. Phillips would clear the lap traffic to
build a small but not comfortable lead until the first caution flew
around lap 24. Phillips took command after the restart with Woodworth
and Anderson battling for the second position. Jeremy Payne, starting
mid-field in the line up took advantage of a few more cautions late in
the race to join the Woodworth Anderson battle. A caution with four laps
to go saw Phillips check out on the field for the win, while Anderson
took over second from Woodworth. Denny Woodworth held off Payne for the
third position, Payne settled for four with Jerry Warner rounding out
the top five.
Brantlee Gotschall picked up the $1,000 Midwest Walnut lucky stars
award

O'Reilly MLRA Releases Tentative 2008 Thunder Tour
Buckner, MO (January 19th, 2008)-Officials with the O'Reilly MLRA have
released the tentative 2008 schedule featuring twenty-two dates with
additional dates still in the works. The O'Reilly Midwest Latemodel Racing
Association will be celebrating it's 20th season of high octane dirt late
model racing action in 2008.
The 2008 Thunder Tour kicks off on Friday, April 4th with a visit to the
Midway Speedway in Lebanon, Missouri. The state of the art Lucas Oil
Speedway is next up on Saturday, April 5th. This will be the first special
event of year at the Forrest Lucas owned facility and is the first of five
visits that the MLRA will make in Wheatland this season. The teams will then
head north the following weekend with stops at the ultra fast Lakeside
Speedway on April 11th and the high banks of the Thunderhill Speedway in
Mayetta, Kansas on April 12th.
May shifts into high gear on May 3rd with the Jack Vaughn Memorial at the
Adrian Speedway in Adrian, Missouri. The early summer action continues on
May 9th and 10th with the $40,000 to win Diamond Nationals at Lucas Oil
Speedway in Wheatland, Missouri. This event is quickly becoming one of the
premier dirt late model events in the nation. After taking a weekend off to
regroup, the MLRA returns on May 25th to the beautiful I-80 Speedway at
Nebraska Raceway Park in Greenwood, Nebraska for the annual alphabet soup
race.
The month of June will kick off for the Bad Boyz of the MLRA on June 13th
with the second of three visits to the Lakeside Speedway followed by the
first visit in recent memory by the MLRA to Adams County Speedway in
Corning, Iowa on June 14th. One of the most anticipated events of the season
is set to take place on June 20th and 21st as O'Reilly Auto Parts presents
the first ever O'Reilly Late Model Challenge at the Lucas Oil Speedway. The
event pits many of the nation's top O'Reilly Auto Parts sponsored dirt late
model touring series in a head to head competition.
The Independence day fireworks on the track begin on July 3rd as 24 Raceway
in Moberly, Missouri welcomes the MLRA for its lone stop on the 2008 tour
for a special Thursday night show on the eve of the Independence Day
Holiday. The Lucas Oil Speedway returns to the schedule for its fourth stop
on July 19th as the top drivers of the MLRA and the Lucas Oil Late Model
Dirt Series compete in the $10,000 to win CMH Late Model Showdown.
The hot summer nights of August will get underway early with a two night
trek to Junction Motor Speedway in McCool Junction, Nebraska on August 1st
and 2nd for the King of the Hill Late Model Shootout. The annual visit to
the State Fair Speedway in Sedalia for the Missouri State Championships
takes place on August 17th. August concludes with final 2008 visits to the
Midway Speedway in Lebanon, Missouri on August 22nd and the Lucas Oil
Speedway on Saturday, August 23rd.
The season wraps up in September beginning with the Al Bodenhamer Memorial
on September 25th at Glenn and Collenn Portzen's Adrian Speedway followed by
the Capital Federal Savings Late Model Shootout at Lakeside Speedway on
September 26th and 27th. This is three straight days of non-stop action you
won't want to miss!
The schedule is tentative and subject to change as more dates are added in
the future.
