THE SHEPHERD OF THE HILLS, first published in 1907, became an immediate best-seller and one of the first million-selling books by an American author. The book was acclaimed novelist Harold Bell Wright's second publication, and almost certainly his most famous work. It was translated into seven different languages and made into four movies, one starring John Wayne in his first Technicolor film. The book sparked the beginning of tourism in Branson, Missouri and the Ozark Mountain region of Missouri.

THE SHEPHERD OF THE HILLS is also the name of an Outdoor Theater established in 1960 setting the stage for a place to reenact Harold Bell Wrights epic story of love, loss, power, hardship and the true meaning of life. THE SHEPHERD OF THE HILLS is also the name of the original Homestead area where Harold Bell Wright camped for 8 summers to regain his health and was inspired to write about the wonderful people and history of the Ozarks Branson area.

The nation's interest in Branson started when they first read this book in 1907 and continues strong today. As you drive around town you will find businesses and streets named for characters and people found in the book: Aunt Mollies, Little Pete's Lane, SHEPHERD OF THE HILLS Expressway, Sammy Lane Resort, to name a few.

The THE SHEPHERD OF THE HILLS Outdoor Drama is presented live with over 80 actors and actresses, 40 horses, a flock of sheep, several guns and rifles, an actual burning log cabin, and a vintage 1908 DeWitt automobile to make the live action performance what it is - a legend. During the day, you can hop on a jeep-drawn tram for a guided tour of the homestead. A visit to THE SHEPHERD OF THE HILLS Historic Homestead is an excellent way to learn more about the characters and the history behind one of America 's best loved stories!

John Anderson Captures O'Reilly MLRA Win at Nevada Speedway and Captures 2008 Championship

Buckner, MO (Oct. 12th)-John Anderson won the battle and the war on Saturday night at Nevada Speedway as he charged from his 10th starting spot to capture the O'Reilly MLRA presented by Lucas Oil win and secure his first ever MLRA Season Championship. Jason Bodenhamer had a strong run to finish second with David Turner third, Joe Kosiski fourth, and 2008 MLRA Rookie of the Year Brantlee Gotschall in fifth.

Omaha, Nebraska veteran Joe Kosiski led the field to the green flag in the $3,000 to win 40 lap Main Event with Bodenhamer outside but it was the 2b of Bodenhamer shooting to the lead down the backstretch to lead the opening lap with Kosiski in tow. The first caution flag waved on lap 3 as the 4r of Rusty Skaggs came to a stop against the wall in turn 4. Bodenhamer led the pack back to the green flag on the double file restart with David Turner now occupying the second spot as Kosiski slipped back to third with Dustin Mooneyham in fourth and former MLRA Champion Al Purkey in fifth.

Anderson had worked his way from his tenth starting spot to sixth by lap #4. Bodenhamer began encountering lap traffic on lap 11 as Purkey and Kosiski continued to battle with Purkey taking the low line. The Caution waved on lap 14 as a multi-car tangle collected the 6t of Donnie Timmerman, the 7 of Brett Wood, and the 3a normally driven by John Farmer, but piloted tonight by Jack Simmons due to engine failure in his familiar #J2 in his heat race.

The green flag flew once again with Bodenhamer in command, but Anderson was now up to fifth and steadily moving his way towards the front. Jordon Holloway brought out the caution on lap 17 as his left rear wheel came off the car down the back stretch. As the field took the green, Bodee and Turner were working the high groove with Purkey on the bottom in third and Anderson now in fourth working the high side. The top 4 ran nose to tail as they set a torrid pace around a very racy Nevada Speedway.

As the laps clicked off, Anderson had pulled up to second and went three wide with Bodenhamer and the lap car of Shawn Harker. Anderson dove to the lead in turn 3 only to make incidential contact with Harker who had gotten out of shape in front of the leaders. Harker stopped in the corner bringing out the caution but Anderson somehow maintained momentum to retain the lead with Bodenhamer still in second. The final caution flag of the evening came out on lap 34 as Bill Koons, P.J. Haskins, and Steve Johnson got together.

At the stripe it was Anderson the winner with Bodenhamer in second. Adrian, Missouri's David Turner took third and wrapped up second place in the season Points Championship. Full results are listed below.

Anderson's Cadillac bodied Stuckey Enterprises MastersBuilt is powered by a Jay Dickens Racing Engine with sponsorship support from Shop Quik Convenience Stores, Quality Tire, Sunoco Race Fuel, Mc3 Properties, MarCorp Electric, and Team Peterson Fluid Systems. The Shop Quik Racing Team is owned by Greg Junghans with Bryan Larimore and Dan Renner turning the wrenches. An emotional Larimore joined John and Junghans in victory lane with Dan Renner unable to attend the event due to illness.

Jeremy Payne Conquers Adrian Speedway
Buckner, MO. (Sept. 26th, 2008) - Jeremy Payne took advantage of his outside front row starting position to win the annual Al Bodenhamer Memorial at Adrian Speedway. The victory was Payne's third MLRA win of 2008 in his Hatfield powered GRT machine.

Alan Vaughn returned to action for the first time since Lakeside Speedway's MLRA show early in the year and took the lead just a few laps into the race, followed by Payne. The two battled side-by-side for several laps before Payne took the lead. Henderson, Colorado's Kelly Boen, running in the third spot put an inside move on Vaughn and took over second. Boen caught Payne in lap traffic but the first caution came out at about lap 15 resetting the field.  On the restart, Boen got a nudge at the tight bullring spinning around and collecting Aaron Seabaugh in the 68s machine.

On the restart following Boen's spin, Payne took command with Jason Bodenhamer and Texarkana, Arkansas' Duke Whiseant going door to door for the second spot with MLRA point leader John Anderson running right on thier bumper. As the laps wound down, it became a two car battle with Payne and Bodenhamer going at it with Payne taking the checkers, Bodenhamer was second, Anderson third, and Terry Phillips fourth after starting deep in the field. Whiseant rounded out the top-five. The series moves on to Lakeside Speedway for two big shows on Friday and Saturday nights.

Terry Phillips Dominates at Sedalia to Claim
Missouri State Fair Championship

Buckner, MO (August 18th, 2008)-Terry Phillips roared past teammate Jeremy Payne on lap 11 and never looked back to claim the win in the O'Reilly MLRA portion of the Missouri State Fair Championships at the historic Sedalia State Fair Speedway. Payne would maintain the second spot in the final rundown with Omaha, Nebraska veteran John Anderson settling for third. 5-time MLRA Champion Al Purkey captured the fourth spot, while  Jeremy "Smackdown" Grady rounded out the top 5.

Phillips was the class of the field all night as he charged from his fifth row starting position in his heat to finish second and garner an outside front row starting position for the feature. Phillip's young protege, Payne also started outside the fifth row in his heat but managed to squeak by Carter Lake, Iowa's Mike Collins to win his heat and occupy the pole for the 30 lap Late Model Main Event by virtue of the passing points system utilized by the O'Reilly MLRA. Payne would set the early pace as Phillips and Anderson followed closely behind. A couple of early cautions stacked the field but Payne was able to pull away on each restart until Phillips rocketed by in his Andy's Frozen Custard, Don Babb Motorsports, Hatfield Racing Engines GRT coming out of turn two on lap 11.

Payne continued to ride in the second spot with Anderson in tow, but could gain no ground on Phillips. A long green flag run allowed Phillips to slice and dice through the lap traffic putting many very good race cars a lap down. A caution on lap 28 allowed the field one final chance with Payne and Anderson bunched up on Phillip's bumper on the restart, but it was not to be on this night as Phillips cruised to the win. Al Purkey, driving a Bill Koons owned car sporting his familiar #33 had a great run advancing from his ninth starting position to finish in fourth, while Story City, Iowa's Jeremy Grady also had an impressive run finishing in the fifth spot. Veteran Nebraska driver Joe Kosiski wheeled his familiar red #53 to the sixth position in the final rundown while Adrian, Missouri's David Turner captured the seventh spot. Jason "Bodee" Bodenhamer was eighth, while Andrew McKay, all the way from Minneapolis, Minnesota came home in ninth. Lancaster, Missouri's Chris Smyser rounded out the Top 10.

Heat Race Winners were David Turner, John Anderson, Jeremy Payne, and Jeremy Grady. Marine, Illinois' Mark Voigt captured the win the B-Main to advance to the main event. Full Results are listed below.

The next event for the O'Reilly MLRA presented by Lucas Oil will be at the beautiful Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Missouri next Saturday night August 23rd. Adrian, MO (May 17th)-Springfield, Missouri's Terry Phillips captured the $3,000 win in the O'Reilly MLRA Jack Vaughn Memorial Saturday night at the Adrian Speedway. Phillips won his heat and started on the pole leading all 40 laps, but had to withstand repeated challenges from John Anderson and Denny Woodworth to take the win.

Denny Woodworth got within striking distance once the two got into lap traffic with John Anderson glued right to Woodworth's bumper. Phillips would clear the lap traffic to build a small but not comfortable lead until the first caution flew around lap 24. Phillips took command after the restart with Woodworth and Anderson battling for the second position. Jeremy Payne, starting mid-field in the line up took advantage of a few more cautions late in the race to join the Woodworth Anderson battle. A caution with four laps to go saw Phillips check out on the field for the win, while Anderson took over second from Woodworth. Denny Woodworth held off Payne for the third position, Payne settled for four with Jerry Warner rounding out the top five.

Shannon Babb Blasts to Win in 2nd Annual SuperClean Diamond Nationals

This was a co-sanctioned event MLRA and LUCAS

WHEATLAND, MO (May 12, 2008) - Shannon Babb can now add a Diamond Nationals victory and a diamond ring to his already impressive resume as the Mowequa, IL hotshoe led every lap en route to picking up the $40,000 paycheck.

A stellar field of 80 entries was trimmed to 26 for the 100-lap 2nd Annual Super Clean Diamond Nationals with Scott Bloomquist and Shannon Babb leading the field down to the green. Babb immediately showed his strength by powering ahead of the second place battle between Bloomquist, Moyer, and Pearson.

While a rash of early cautions kept Babb at bay, Bloomquist, Moyer, and Pearson swapped the second position back and forth, 20th-starting Steve Francis and 25th-starting Bart Hartman were slowly working their way through the field.  Francis ran as high as sixth before falling into the pits and Hartman cracked the top ten before being involved in a lap 39 caution which included Jimmy Mars, Will Vaught, Michael England, and Terry Casey among others.

The restart saw Babb on the point with Pearson, Bloomquist, Scott James, and Moyer in tow. As Babb weaved in and out of lapped traffic, Pearson shadowed his every move until lap 69 when a broken j-bar forced the defending Series champion to slow on the track.

When racing resumed, Babb led Bloomquist, Moyer, Darrell Lanigan, and Jimmy Owens down to the green as Bloomquist slipped high in turn four allowing several cars to pass. Moyer then gave chase to the race-long leader over the closing laps, but was never able to chase down the driver of the Clint Bowyer Motorsports #18.

Babb was the first to cross the stripe in his Clements powered Rocket with Moyer crossing in second, Lanigan third, Owens fourth, and Steve Casebolt fifth.

"I'd just like to thank Clint Bowyer and this whole team for giving me a great race car," Babb said in victory lane. "It's awesome to get this win and I'd like to thank Forrest (Lucas) for all he does to make this event possible."

Upon the conclusion of the race, Series officials reviewed the official score sheets and revised two positions in the final rundown of the track's original electronic scoring.  Darrell Lanigan, who was originally scored one lap down in eighth position, was determined to be on the lead lap, thus revising his finishing position to third place.  In addition, John Blankenship was originally scored electronically in 14th place, but was later credited with a 13th place finish after a review of the official score sheets.

PAYNE COLLECTS $3,000 O'REILLY MLRA SERIES VICTORY WEDNESDAY AT LAKESIDE SPEEDWAY

From Lakeside Speedway PR
KANSAS CITY, Kans. (May 8) - The rains came down around Lakeside all day long. All day long the rains never hit at Lakeside Speedway. Many fans and competitors were scared off by the rain Wednesday afternoon. With several racers in the area for the Lucas Oil SuperClean Diamond Nationals, it could have been a large car count. For the fans that made the trip, they got to see one great race.

Clint Bowyer, a former track champion at Lakeside Speedway who is now on the NASCAR circuit, is coming off a win in the Sprint Cup last Saturday night. Fans of Lakeside came out to see their 'favorite son'. Not only did Bowyer show up, he brought with him, Shannon Babb. Babb drives for Bowyer's new dirt late model team. This past Saturday night, not only did Bowyer pick up a win, but Babb won a World of Outlaw Late Model race at I-44 Speedway. Needless to say, Clint Bowyer Racing is on a high at the moment.

In the first heat of the night. Al Purkey, a former MLRA Champion, took the early lead as Bowyer settled into the 2nd spot. David Turner made a move on Bowyer on the 3rd lap, but Bowyer would get him back on the outside and hold onto that 2nd spot. Alan Vaughn, last year's MLRA Champion, moved up to 3rd on the speedway by lap 7 of the 12 lap heat race. A yellow flag came out on lap number 10 for Bill Koons in turn 1.

Purkey, Bowyer and Vaughn would lead the field down to restart the race. The green flag dropped and Purkey jumped back into the lead. It would be short lived as debris on the front straight would bring out another yellow. On the restart Bryant Goldsmith would bring out another yellow. It appeared that David Turner got into him on the restart. Back to green and again it's Purkey to the front and Bowyer second. Purkey, Bowyer and Vaughn are your top 3 as the checkered flag drops.

The 2nd heat of the night contained another modified track champion at Lakeside Speedway, Tim Karrick. Chad Frewaldt is the leader in this heat early. Sonny Findling moved his way into the 2nd spot, while Jeremy Payne moved into 3rd on lap 5. Larry Clawson Jr. will bring out the caution and the field will have to bunch up again. Frewaldt, Findling, Payne, Brantlee Gotschall and Jerry Warner are your top 5. Tim Karrick has moved up to 4th on the speedway. From his last place starting spot. Karrick now moves into 3rd spot and Payne has rolled up to Frewaldt to battle for the lead. Clawson brings out another yellow. Karrick was thrown into duty when he got an offer from Denny Woodworth to drive his backup car. At this point he is looking good. Findling gets by Karrick on the restart and Payne takes over the lead. Payne now has a commanding lead at the white flag. Payne, Frewaldt and Karrick are the top 3 in this heat.

The 3rd heat is a stacked heat. Shannon Babb, John Anderson, Clint 'Cat Daddy' Smith, Joe Kosiski and Terry Phillips are all in this heat, the 3rd and final heat. Babb scoots out in front. Clint Smith, who picked up the WoO win at Lakeside in '07 is in 3rd spot and on the move forward. He will take 2nd from Tommy Elston and now John Anderson will put pressure on Elstun for 3rd. Terry Phillips and Anderson are in a tight battle for the 3rd position. The race is now up front between Babb and Smith. Smith to the inside and will take the lead from Babb on lap 10. White flag to Smith. Phillips goes by Anderson for 3rd. Smith, Babb and Phillips are your top 3.

Jermey Payne and Clint Smith will make up the front row for the 40 lap A Main event. Payne will get the early lead and Clint Smith gives chase in the 2nd spot.

Sonny Findling came to a rest up in turn 2 and it will bring out the first yellow of the night in this main event. Payne, Smith and Phillips are the top 3. Al Purkey holds down the 4th spot and rounding out the top 5 is Clint Bowyer.

Alan Vaughn is on the move through the field. He is hounding Bowyer at the moment.

Jeremy Payne enters lapped traffic on lap number 6. Smith is still within shouting distance of Payne as they march through the field.
Phillips has command of 3rd at the moment and Purkey and Bowyer are entangled in a battle for 4th at the moment.

A right rear flat on the Mark Voight will bring out the caution and take us back to lap 8. Up to this point, the feature has been moving along at a torrid pace. The current top 10 on the track, Jeremy Payne, Clint Smith, Terry Phillips, Al Purkey, Clint Bowyer, Alan Vaughn, David Turner, John Anderson, Shannon Babb and Denny Woodworth.

Payne brings them back to the restart. On the restart Babb jumps back up to the 7th spot. Payne still shows the way, with Smith in tow and his car owner, Terry Phillips, in 3rd.

Bowyer pulls up on Purkey on lap 12, Shannon Babb pulls off the track. As he pulls off the track Bryant Goldsmith will bring out the caution with a motor that has let go. It brings out another yellow. The top 5 are the same on the speedway that was running at the last yellow flag break. Lights are out on the speedway and we are ready to go back racing.

Double file restarts are common place in the O'Reilly MLRA. On this restart Vaughn flies by Bowyer to take 5th. Payne and Smith are 1 and 2. Sixteen laps in and Payne still has control. Smith goes to the inside of Payne into turn one, but Payne takes the lead back out of two.

Payne, Smith, Phillips, Purkey, Vaughn, Bowyer and Anderson have broken away from the field. Lapped traffic comes into play once again. Smith will look to capitalize here. Looked like a puff of smoke from Payne, we will have to keep an eye on that at lap 22. Bowyer and Anderson are putting on a hard battle at the moment for the 6th position.

Payne, Smith and Phillips have now pulled a ways away from the rest of the field by lap 26. 3 Car battle for 5th. Vaughn, Bowyer and Anderson. The trio run nose to tail. Bowyer and Vaughn get caught up and Bowyer gets the best of it as he takes 5th position back.

Terry Phillips closes in on Clint Smith. Lapped traffic is coming into play with these two. Jeremy Payne is way out in front, he can put it on crusie control with 4 laps to go.

The track stays clean with two laps to go. Payne is still out in front. White flag to Payne.

Payne put together a great run on the evening. It will be a start to a weekend that could be very lucrative for some late model driver as the Lucas Oil Speedway presents the SuperClean Diamond Nationals Friday and Saturday night.

O'Reilly MLRA Lakeside and Lucas Oil Speedway Previews
Buckner, MO (May 1st, 2008)-As unseasonably cool and rainy weather created havoc for racing schedules in the month of April, the O'Reilly MLRA presented by Lucas Oil looks to get back on track in May. The first stop of the month will take place on Wednesday night, May 7th at the Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kansas for a $3,000 to win show, followed by a two day visit to the Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Missouri on May 9th and 10th for the $40,000 to win Diamond Nationals.

McCarthy Chevrolet and GM Performance Accessories present the Bad Boyz of the O'Reilly MLRA for a rare midweek show on May 7th at the Lakeside Speedway. Clint Bowyer and Shannon Babb will be in attendance to challenge the MLRA in wheel to wheel dirt late model racing action. Arizona native and current Springfield, Missouri resident Jeremy Payne leads the MLRA contingent into battle with a two point lead over 5-time MLRA Champ Al Purkey. David Turner, Terry Phillips, and Will Vaught round out the top 5 in points and are expected to be in action. Defending MLRA Champion Alan Vaughn will also look to rebound from a tough start to contend for the win. Other drivers expected to be in attendance include John Anderson, Denny Woodworth, Mark Burgtorf and Scott Drake.

With a pair of World of Outlaws Late Model shows this weekend in Southwest Missouri and the high profile Diamond Nationals the following weekend, look for several high profile dirt late model teams to make an appearance at Lakeside and snare a share of the loot.

Adult admission for the event is $15 in advance, $18 at the gate, with kids just $6. Gates open at 5:00pm, with Hot Laps at 7:00 and racing set to get underway at 7:30. The Lakeside Speedway is located north of the Kansas Speedway off of I-435 on Walcott Dr. in Kansas City, Kansas. For more information, please visit www.lakesidespeedway.net or call the track office at (913) 299-2040.

The event everyone is talking about takes place on May 9th-10th. Of course we are talking about the Super Clean Diamond Nationals at Forrest Lucas' "Diamond of Dirt Tracks" in Wheatland Missouri. With $40,000 on the line, huge car counts are expected along with capacity crowds. The event is co-sanctioned by the MLRA and by the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series. The total purse for the event is over $160,000! The O'Reilly MLRA is also awarded two provisionals for this event so MLRA points are crucial heading into the weekend as nobody wants to be left out of the event. Please visit www.LucasOilSpeedway.com for detailed schedule and event information. The Lucas Oil Speedway can also be reached via phone at (417) 282-5984.

Two-Time NASCAR Nationwide Series Champion Randy Lajoie will be on hand both days with his Safer Racer Tour. The Lucas the Oil Race'n Ride Two-Seat Late Models will make appearances following racing action both nights.

In addition to the exciting action on the track there will be a special competition for the crews of the touring dirt late model race teams that compete at this event. On Friday May 9th a special "Integra Shocks Crew Chief Challenge" competition will take place in front of the main grandstands and will be taped for TV broadcast at a later date. The MLRA and Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series race teams will compete for cash awards presented to the top three fastest pit crews that complete a pit stop in a timed format. In the first round of competition each team will have their driver drive into a pit box where two crew members will service the car by changing the RR tire and sending their driver out of the pit box the fastest in the timed format. The three fastest race teams after the first round will return and compete against each other again but this time the crew must change a RF Shock and RF tire during the timed pit stop. The team that completes the pit stop the fastest will receive $1000 from Integra Shocks. Both second and third place teams will also receive a cash award.
