Stanbrough Is King of Indiana For Fifth Time; 10th Annual KISS Wrap Up
Stanford, IN – The King of Indiana Sprint Series completed its 10th year of
competition in June and Jon Stanbrough has been the champion for half of those
years. He earned this season's title by winning two of the five features,
finishing second twice, and having just one off night, by his standards, a
seventh place finish.
While Stanbrough got his off night out of the way early, at the Gas City/I-69
Speedway opening event, Dave Darland celebrated his new ride in the Goodnight
Maxim with his second KISS victory. The 30-lap main event will be long
remembered for the intense battle for second between Levi Jones and Bryan
Clauson. Jones had the spot and Clauson wanted past. It certainly wasn't a
classic duel, and ended with Jones sitting in no-man's land behind turn three,
while Clauson followed Darland to the checkers.
Stanbrough and the Fox Brothers turned things around two nights later as he
raced the Fox's DRC to victory lane at Kokomo Speedway. The leaders, Clauson
and Chris Windom got together late in the race with Clauson's rear tire
exploding, and while Windom was gathering up his machine, Stanbrough drove past.
Only three tracks have hosted KISS events each of the ten years the series has
competed: Gas City, Paragon and Bloomington Speedways. Bloomington holds the
unwanted record for the most rainouts (4) during that period. This year,
Bloomington was the only track whose KISS event was impacted by weather.
The KISS racers towed south to Lawrenceburg for the Saturday round that
weekend. Defending KISS champion Brady Short captured the win, dueling with
Justin Grant and then outrunning Stanbrough. Afterward, Short paid tribute to
Stanbrough when he told the crowd, “If you want to be the man, you have to beat
the man and he's the man right now. So it feels pretty good to beat him.”
With the top-5 in the KISS standings all within 100 points, the final two races
became the focus of the title contenders. Jeff Bland Jr. became this year's
only first time KISS winner with his victory at Tri-State Speedway. He topped
Stanbrough and Short, with point contenders Hunter Schuerenberg and Billy
Puterbaugh in fourth and fifth, for the victory.
The finale, at Paragon Speedway, was almost like a coronation for Stanbrough.
The track looked fastest in the bottom and middle grooves, which is where nearly
everyone else was running. Starting sixth, Stanbrough took the Fox Brothers'
machine to the outer limits, and finding the cushion to be slim but fast, drove
to the front. He took the lead from Bland after a tough scrap, and out-pedaled
Josh Cunningham for the 17th KISS victory of his career.
The win gave Stanbrough a 70-point lead over Schuerenberg in the final KISS
standings. His bounty from the title includes the KISS Championship Trophy and
Champions Helmet, as well as $1,000 from the point fund. Ted Hines finished
just nine points behind Short, the defending KISS champion, for fourth.
Stanbrough, Schuerenberg, Short and Hines were the only ones to participate in
all five events. This year's KISS competition featured 96 different drivers in
competition.
Final 2010 KISS Points: 1. Jon Stanbrough 862, 2. Hunter Schuerenberg 792, 3.

Jon Stanbrough Captures Fifth KISS
Crown
Paragon, IN, June 26, 2010 -- Jon Stanbrough wrapped up his fifth King
of Indiana Sprint Series championship with a record 17th KISS victory,
Saturday night at Paragon Speedway. Taking the lead from Jeff Bland Jr.
on the 12 lap, Stanbrough captured his third consecutive KISS finale at
Paragon Speedway as Josh Cunningham fought his way to second, followed
by Bland, Hunter Schuerenberg and Kyle Cummins.
“I'm happy to win the race and happy to win the championship,”
Stanbrough acknowledged later. Then he paid tribute to the
owner-mechanics who field his sprint car, “Last night was Steve and Brad
(Fox's) 100th win, I'm just happy to be a part of that with them. This
is always a nice place to come back down here to Paragon. I can remember
when I first came down here, it wasn't the nicest place in the world,
but Keith Ford's done a nice job and cleaned it up, got the grass cut
and the race track's nice. It's just a nice place to come to now.”
Starting from the pole, Cummins was the early race leader, with Bland,
Cunningham, Jon Sciscoe, Brady Short and Stanbrough scrapping for
positions behind him. With nearly everyone working the bottom half of
the track, Cunningham tested the top initially. Bland raced underneath
Cummins going into three on the third circuit, taking the lead cleanly
as they exited four. The red flew a lap later, when Jordan Kinser
somersaulted in the first turn and walked away without injury.
When Stanbrough moved to the top with the restart, the story of the race
changed. While others stayed close to the inside, the Brownsburg driver
found that even though the cushion was thin, he could carry enough
momentum off the turns to steadily move forward. On the sixth circuit,
he swept around both Cunningham and Cummins exiting four and took over
second. He caught Bland three laps later, and hustled past going into
the third turn. But the distance around the top of the turn was much
longer and Bland retained the top lead when they exited. The dance was
repeated each of the next four laps, until Stanbrough finally began to
pull away.
While the Fox Brothers/Jarvis Enterprises DRC began to deal with slower
lapped cars, the battle for second took center stage. Bland, Cummins,
Short and Cunningham fought each other in every turn, as they sliced
past backmarkers. On lap 21, Jared Harris spun just ahead of Stanbrough,
in the first turn, but avoided a yellow when he didn't stall. Stanbrough
maintained a lead of a half-straightaway, or more, over the final ten
laps, and held that margin at the checkers. Although Short had dropped
out, Cunningham moved into second in the closing circuits, and Bland
edged Schuerenberg for third.
Stanbrough was one of the few drivers who tried running the top, and
obviously he made it work. He said, ”I didn't have a plan to go there,
but everybody that was in front of me, obviously was running the bottom,
so I had to do something. I wasn't going to get around them following
them. I just kept working it, working it and working it. I think maybe I
got a little bit better, and the bottom probably slicked off and slowed
down a little bit. Most of the lapped traffic played into my hand, they
were all on the bottom. That one guy that spun out, did a 360 down there
kind of got my attention, but luckily we made it by.”
It was Cunningham's best finish in a KISS feature, and he thought he had
an opportunity to win. “The lapped traffic never did fall our way,” he
explained. “We'd get up to second and then we'd fall back to fourth
through the lapped traffic and finally whenever we got them cleared,
we'd start making some progress there toward Jon. I think with a few
more laps we could have really given him a run for his money. I think
that we were a little bit quicker than him, but the cards just didn't
fall into the right places tonight.”
The win gave Stanbrough a 70-point lead over Schuerenberg in the final
KISS standings. Ted Hines finished just nine points behind Short, the
defending KISS champion, for third.

Jeff Bland Claims Tri-State KISS Round
Haubstadt, IN -- With a powerful performance, Jeff Bland Jr. scored his
first King of Indiana Sprint Series victory at Tri-State Speedway,
Saturday, in an event co-sanctioned with MSCS. Bland outran series
point leader Jon Stanbrough in the closing laps to win by five car
lengths. Brady Short finished third, followed by Hunter Schuerenberg
and Billy Puterbaugh Jr.
“It was pretty tough,” Bland said following the victory celebration. “I
used my patience, that I hardly ever use, but I just rode there.
Everybody tells me to just ride until the end. I rode and it worked out.”
The race was busy, with a lot going on through the thirty laps. Daron
Clayton grabbed the lead from Robert Ballou through the second turn. On
the third circuit, Jonathan Hendrick somersaulted through the third
turn, bringing out the red flag. Ballou charged past Clayton on the
restart and opened a car length advantage. On the 10th lap, Stanbrough
drove under Clayton and took second, quickly followed by Bland. At the
midway point, Ballou was dicing through packs of slower cars, with
Stanbrough and Bland following closely. On the 19th circuit, Ballou
found open track, and Bland worked his way into second, passing
Stanbrough as they fought through traffic. Ballou quickly reestablished
a half-straightaway gap, while Short joined the battle for second. But
a yellow on lap 23, bunched the leaders again.
On the restart, Blake Fitzpatrick got high in turn one, bounced off the
wall and flipped down the track, into the cars of Ted Hines and Jonathan
Vennard. Two laps into the next green flag run, Kurt Gross ran low into
turn one, caught a rut, and flipped his machine.
Driving the ServPro/Auto Credit DRC, Bland drove inside of Ballou on the
restart and they ran side-by-side the next circuit, before Ballou edged
back ahead in turn two. Bland charged back, pulling even coming off
turn four. Then, going into the first turn on lap 27, Ballou ran high,
clobbered the wall and tumbled into Clayton.
While the track workers cleared his machine, Ballou walked to the front
stretch, leaned in to speak with Bland, and then unhooked one of the
spark plug wires. Track officials quickly directed Ballou from the
track and replaced the plug wire. Ballou was disqualified for his actions.
After starting fifth, Bland held off Stanbrough and Short through the
final three laps for the victory. Schuerenberg came from tenth to
fourth to retain second in the KISS standings. Interestingly, the top
four in KISS points finished second through fifth.
“I could drive that aggressive because the car was so good. It's what
it liked and it was sticking everywhere I went and it was perfect,”
Bland noted, giving a nod to his mother and father. It was his first
KISS appearance of the year. “It's big. It's the first ever I won a
KISS race and this is my favorite place to win. The fans are great
here, and it's just such a big race every time I come here, all the good
drivers come here. It was a big night for me to win here.”
“I'm a little disappointed obviously that I ran second,” Stanbrough
allowed afterward. His run in the Fox Brothers/Jarvis Enterprises DRC
gave him a 55 point lead going into the final race. “It's better than
crashing or not finishing the race. I was running second behind Robert
and just got caught up in some lapped traffic, and that very well may
have cost me an opportunity to win the race. Once lapped traffic got
cleared and I was in third, the top was so fast you know, hard to do
anything anywhere but on the top. We were fortunate to stay out of
Robert's accident and I think we were as fast as Bland, but you just
couldn't pull off the cushion. I saw Brady down on the bottom and he
couldn't do anything with either one of us down there. So, it's just
one of those deals where the top is just so much faster and has so much
more momentum and speed, when you get out in the lead, that's where you
need to stay because it's so hard to pass.”
On the other side of pit lane, Ballou provided his perspective on the
incident that put him out. “He ran me up coming off of turn four and I
had nowhere to go,” he explained. “I was still right there, outside of
him and he kept running up, up, up, and I had nowhere to go. I ran out
of real estate.”
The 10th Annual KISS tour will conclude and the champion crowned on
Saturday, June 26, at Paragon Speedway. The pit gate will open at 4:00,
the grandstands at 5:00, with racing at 7:30.

Stanbrough Leads KISS To Tri-State Speedway
Stanford, IN, May 31, 2010 – Four-time King of Indiana Sprint Series
champion Jon Stanbrough is in a familiar place as the KISS tour begins
the final leg of its 2010 campaign. Stanbrough holds a 45 point lead
over Hunter Schuerenberg, with the 2009 series champion Brady Short 83
points behind. The top-5 are all within 100 points, as Billy Puterbaugh
and Ted Hines trail by 98 and 99 points.
The fourth stop of this year's KISS tour is at Tri-State Speedway on
Saturday, where Short, who won the most recent KISS event, is also the
defending race winner. Justin Marvel captured the first KISS race at
Haubstadt's Tri-State Speedway in 2001, the series' inaugural season.
Then returning to the oval in 2007, Daron Clayton won twice, followed by
Short's victory last season.
Co-sanctioned with the Midwest Sprint Car Series, the June 5 event at
Tri-State Speedway highlights two very different point battles. MSCS
will continue through the summer and it is worth noting that Brady Short
has won the two most recent races, at Lawrenceburg and Tri-State this
past weekend. For KISS, only two events remain, after Saturday's at
Tri-State Speedway, the grand finale is at Paragon Speedway on Saturday,
June 26.
Saturday's KISS show at Tri-State Speedway will begin racing at 7:30,
with hot laps at 6:30. Admission tickets are $15, students 13 – 18 years
old will be admitted for $10, and ages 12 and younger are admitted free.
Pit passes are $30. The program will include UMP modifieds. As recently
announced by Tri-State Speedway, the family of the late Mike Cunningham
has donated $3,500 to the race purse in his memory, increasing the
winner's share to $4,000, with $400 to start the feature. More
information about the program, maps and directions can be found on the
web at
http://www.tristatespeedway.com.
In the three previous events, this year's KISS series has featured
tough, gutty racing with three of the best non-wing sprint car racers
celebrating in victory lane. Dave Darland claimed the opening event at
Gas City/I-69 Speedway, that saw a thrilling battle for second, between
Levi Jones and Bryan Clauson, go down to the final lap. At Kokomo
Speedway the next night, Jon Stanbrough earned his sixteenth KISS win,
by far the most in the series' history. A week later, Bloomington was
rained out, but Brady Short jumped into the point battle with his
victory at Lawrenceburg Speedway. Schuerenberg sits second in the points
with a best race finish of third, at Kokomo.
Current KISS Points: 1. Jon Stanbrough 507, 2. Hunter Schuerenberg 462,
3. Brady Short 424, 4. Billy Puterbaugh Jr. 409, 5. Ted Hines 408, 6.

Short Scores Lawrenceburg KISS Victory
Lawrenceburg, IN – Defending KISS champion Brady Short turned his
fortunes around with a hard fought victory at Lawrenceburg Speedway on
Saturday. Short led the final 11 circuits, holding off Jon Stanbrough
over the closing laps to earn his second career KISS win. Behind
Stanbrough, John Memmer, Andrew Elson and Casey Riggs finished in the
top five.
Afterward, Short explained the significance of outrunning Stanbrough to
the Lawrenceburg Speedway crowd, “If you want to be the man, you have to
beat the man and he's the man right now. So it feels pretty good to beat
him.”
The 30-lap feature saw thrilling three-car battle between Short, at the
wheel of the Indiana StoneWorks Maxim, Stanbrough and youthful Justin
Grant. After drawing the pole starting spot, Stanbrough edged Short to
lead the first lap, but wasn't able to pull away. Grant quickly took
second from Short, then hustled around Stanbrough on the fifth circuit.
Working the high groove, Grant kept the Baldwin Maxim out front for the
next 13 laps, smoothly slicing through traffic while Short and
Stanbrough scrapped for second. Following a lap 17 restart, Stanbrough
passed Short for second in turn four. But Short fought back, re-passing
the Fox DRC and then diving inside of Grant in turn three and taking the
lead just before the flagstand.
As the cushion kept moving higher through turn four, Grant also ran
higher. On the 20th circuit, he got too high and clouted the wall,
losing four spots before the caution came out for debris. Although
officials inspected his machine for damage under the yellow, Grant's
hood disintegrated on the front straightaway shortly after the green,
and he headed to the pits.
Short maintained a twelve car length lead until Stanbrough began to
narrow the gap over the last three circuits. But Stanbrough could only
close to three car lengths at the finish. Memmer, Elson and Riggs put on
a good battle for third, but weren't able to contend for the lead.
“When I got back to third, I just was a little bit tight,” Short
explained as he celebrated in the pit area. “I knew the track was going
to come to me and I knew the car was good, it was pulling the front
wheels up in the air whenever I wanted it to and that's always a
comfortable feeling. The first ten laps you just kind of have to be
comfortable and figure out where they are going to run at and where you
need to run at to make yourself go fast. That's what I tend to do, try
to be smart and the first half of the race let them guys drive their
hearts out and the last half is when I try to pick it up.”
Stanbrough admitted that he would have liked a few more laps, “All of
the yellow flags hurt us, we needed some long green flag laps to let the
car come to us and every time the yellow would come out the air pressure
would go back down. There at the end we started to free up a little bit
and kind of reeled him in. But it was just too late. Congratulations to
Brady, he did a good job and you can't ask to win every single race and
we've been lucky and run up front almost every race this year. I just
needed some longer green flag laps and it might have been different. But
I'm not taking anything away from Brady, he did a good job.”
A short distance away, Grant said that he had been chasing the race
track as the race went on. “The car was on a rail. It was awesome and it
was fun to drive. After that yellow we just got a little tight and
bicycled up and blew the hood apart and that was about it.”
As the racers prepare for the fourth stop of this year's KISS tour, at
Tri-State Speedway in two weeks, Stanbrough's second place finish moved
him into a commanding point lead as he chases his fifth championship.
Hunter Schuerenberg runs second, 45 points behind with two events
remaining. Short sits third in the standings, trailing Stanbrough by 83,
with Billy Puterbaugh Jr. 15 point further back.

Bloomington Rained Out – KISS Heads to Lawrenceburg Speedway
May 21, 2010 – Heavy overnight rain, a damp morning and the risk of severe
storms compelled Bloomington Speedway promoter Mike Miles to cancel tonight's
KISS program. Under KISS series rules, races are not made up in the event of a
rainout. The series now turns to Lawrenceburg Speedway on Saturday night.
The KISS show at Lawrenceburg Speedway will begin with hot laps at 6 pm and racing at 7. The pit gate opens at 4 pm and general admission at 5. Admission tickets are $15, youngsters 7 – 12 are just $7, while those 6 and younger are admitted free. Pit passes are $30. The program will include UMP modifieds and AMSA mini-sprints. More information and directions can be found on the web at www.lawrenceburgspeedway.com.
With three races remaining, the series is at the halfway mark. Dave Darland collected his second KISS victory at Gas City I-69 Speedway, and four-time champion Jon Stanbrough notched his sixteenth series win at Kokomo Speedway. This puts them on top of the current KISS standings, separated by only 8 points. However, sitting between them, Tracy Hines holds position just 5 points behind Darland. But the potential battle is larger than just those three. Chris Windom is only a point behind Stanbrough, while Hunter Schuerenberg and Blake Fitzpatrick are within 30 points of the leader. This is the recipe for a night of hard, exciting racing on Saturday.
KISS points (after May 16): 1. Darland 340, 2. Tracy Hines 335, 3. Stanbrough 332, 4. Windom 331, 5. Schuerenberg 314, 6. Fitzpatrick 313, 7. Clauson 306, 8. Ted Hines 280, 9. Puterbaugh 272, 10. Armstrong 253

Youngsters Chase Veterans as KISS Heads to
Bloomington and Lawrenceburg Speedways
May 18, 2010 – A savvy group of veterans lead the King of Indiana Sprint Series
into this weekend's exciting events. Dave Darland, Tracy Hines and Jon
Stanbrough top the points following last weekend's dramatic opening rounds. But
while these three drivers may have more time standing in the pay line than most
others have on the race track, several members of the next generation are right
at their heels. Only eight points separate first and third, but Chris Windom is
just one point further behind, followed by Hunter Schuerenberg and Blake
Fitzpatrick, less than 20 points further back. Illustrating their youth, while
Windom is 19 and Schuerenberg 20, Fitzpatrick graduates from West Vigo High
School this month.
While all six drivers are racing well, Windom could be one to watch. He scored
his first KISS win on the Bloomington clay last year, and led most of the laps
before finishing second at Kokomo, Sunday night. At Gas City, he was sixth.
Darland captured last week's Gas City event and ran fifth at Kokomo, Hines
registered fifth and fourth, and Stanbrough was seventh at Gas City before
winning at Kokomo. Schuerenberg was ninth on Friday and third Sunday, while
Fitzpatrick raced home in fourth and eighth.
While these six are currently on top of the mountain, several top drivers have
struggled in the early KISS events. With 44 cars in the pits and tough racing
on the track, defending series champion Brady Short missed the cut on Friday.
Also not transferring to the feature were Robert Ballou, Damion Gardner, Shane
Cottle and Dickie Gaines. Ballou and Cottle missed the feature again at
Kokomo; Ballou after clouting the wall his his heat and then flipping in the
B-Main, while Cottle was the victim of a mechanical problem.
The important point is that the table is set for Friday's program at
Bloomington, and Saturday's at Lawrenceburg. Several drivers will have to work
hard to make up ground lost last weekend, while others will be fighting for the
royal title, trophy and the KISS champion’s helmet.
The racing program at Bloomington Speedway includes UMP modifieds and UMP super
stocks. The pit gate opens at 4:30 and the main grandstand at 5:30, with hot
laps at 6:30 and racing at 7:30. General admission is $15, and pit passes are
$30, while kids (12 and under) are admitted free general admission with a paid
adult. More information and directions are available at

Saturday's KISS program at Lawrenceburg Speedway will begin with hot laps at 6

King of Indiana
Sprint Series, Round 1
Gas City I-69 Speedway, Gas City, IN
May 15, 2009
Gas City, IN – Lincoln, Indiana's Dave Darland romped to victory as the 2010
King of Indiana Sprint Series opened at Gas City/I-69 Speedway on Friday.
Driving Matt and Gene Goodnight's Pallet Builder Maxim, Darland led all
thirty laps while Bryan Clauson raced from eighth to grab second in a
controversial finish. Tracy Hines, Blake Fitzpatrick and Casey Shuman filled
the top five finishing slots.
“It means a lot,” Darland said afterward. “There's a lot of reasons for it.
Being the King of Indiana Sprint Car Series, Indiana is just a great sprint
car tradition and history. It's too bad this series didn't start back in the
40's and 50's when there was good race car drivers then, too. It's just
winning races here in Indiana is just a thrill and pleasure and honor. This
is the third time I've driven this car for Matt and Gene Goodnight. Just for
all of those opportunities and reasons, it's special for me to win this KISS
race tonight.”
With 44 cars in competition, Darland powered around Hines through the third
and fourth turns to lead the first lap and quickly opened a comfortable
advantage. Levi Jones took second from Hines on the third circuit, and began
chasing Darland. But Darland was running as fast as anyone on the
quarter-mile and maintained a full straightaway lead until he began catching
slower cars at the halfway mark. By lap 20, Darland and Jones ran
nose-to-tail through packs of slower cars and Clauson had taken third and
joined the battle.
As Darland continued to run out front, the battle between Jones and Clauson
became a war. For most of ten laps, Clauson tried every move possible to get
past Jones, but each time Jones countered with his own move. Almost like a
knife fight in a narrow alley, the two battled at each end and made contact
more than once. Jones used the infield and the wall on the front straight to
keep Clauson's 2B Racing Maxim behind him. Finally, going into turn three
with a strong run on the last lap, Clauson looked high, and when Jones moved
up, the two made contact again. When Jones began to spin, Clauson's front
and Jones' rear bumpers became hooked and both pirouetted in unison. When
Clauson's bumper broke free, he quickly gunned the car, spun it 180 degrees
and raced to the checkered flag, while Jones sat motionless in the middle of
the track.
Back in the pits, Clauson said that his car was a rocket and he was trying
to catch Darland. Then he added, “He'd been running me all over the place. I
tried passing him high and he ran me off the track and I tried passing him
low and he ran me into the infield three or four times. Finally I just
didn't lift. Finally I didn't lift and unfortunately he got the worst end of
it. You can only get pushed around so much, and take so much before you
finally have to keep your nose in it and stay with the move. Unfortunately
it ended like that.”
The official scorers ruled that the caution came out after Darland had taken
the checkers and that the scoring reverted to the last lap scored. Jones was
moved to the end of the lead lap because he was ruled to have been the cause
of the yellow.
Outside the Tony Stewart Racing hauler, Jones inspected a tire on his
machine. Clearly frustrated, he explained, “I didn't race quarter midgets,
so I didn't know that I'm here to, I didn't know you're just supposed to
move over and let someone go. I didn't take him out racing and at the end he
had to take me out. But part of it is that's why the fans come and we'll get
ready and go again tomorrow night.”
“I was in the right spot at the right times,” Darland noted later, as they
began to load equipment into the hauler. “I know that when I moved to the
top of 3 and 4, that's when I kind of sealed the deal. I was better up there
and just early in the race I could just run the middle of the track and be
pretty aggressive that way. After 10 to 12 laps, it started to slicken off
and I had to move around and by that time I was catching some lapped cars
and I could judge whether I was in the right spot by whether I gained or
lost on them. Leading the race is hard when you have to decide what lane to
choose but I just used the lapped cars as a marker.”
The KISS racers reconvene on Sunday, at Kokomo Speedway. Adult general
admission is $15, and kids aged 10 and under are free with a paying adult.
Pit passes are priced at $30. The racing program includes street stocks and
thunder cars. The pit gate opens at 3:30 pm and grandstand gates at 4:30.
The first race will start at 6:15. More information and directions are
available at

Huge Doubleheader Opens 2010
KISS Tour Curtain Lifts At Gas City/I-69 & Kokomo Speedways
May 10, 2010 – It will be a busy weekend for racers contending for the tenth
King Of Indiana Sprint Series championship when both Gas City/I-69 Speedway and
Kokomo Speedway raise the lid on the 2010 KISS tour this weekend. The Gas City
oval will present the Hoosier sprint car series on Friday, May 14, and then they
travel to Kokomo on Sunday, May 16.
With two of the top sprint car facilities in the nation hosting the exciting
KISS racers, the double-dose promises to be a huge treat. Last spring saw four
drivers earn their initial KISS victories, including Bryan Clauson (at Gas
City), Nic Faas (Lawrenceburg), Chris Windom (Bloomington) and Brady Short
(Haubstadt). And while Billy Puterbaugh captured his second KISS win, at
Kokomo, Paragon fans saw Jon Stanbrough raise the bar for the most victories to
15.
Indiana sprint car racers have been busy already this season. Robert Ballou,
Tracy Hines and Bryan Clauson have collected wins at Gas City, and Clauson
currently tops the track's points. Clauson also notched a victory at Kokomo,
while Shane Cottle claimed the Sunday night win this past weekend.
Four-time champion Jon Stanbrough, who collected his first win of the year at
Bloomington a couple weeks ago, says that running the KISS series is fulfilling
to him, as a racer. “There's usually a lot of cars there and you don't qualify,
so you have to go by your draw, and a lot of times if you draw bad, you have to
race really hard to get through into the feature. And even when you get through
into the feature, there's no guarantee you're going to start up front. Probably
90% of the cars that are at a KISS show every night are capable of winning the
race. When we can go out there and do what we've done, that's what I mean by
fulfilling to me. And I'm sure it is to Brad and Steve (Fox) as well.”
KISS events pay $2,500 to win and $250 to start the feature. With sponsorship
from Indiana Stone Works, the B-Main pays $100 to all starters who do not
transfer to the feature. The $3,600 point fund awards the top five point
finishers. This year's King of Indiana Sprints will also receive a new Simpson
helmet with original and unique champion's artwork by VanHorn Tint &
Accessories.
The racing program at Gas City/I-69 Speedway includes UMP modifieds and thunder
cars. Gas City I-69 Speedway opens at 4 pm and racing starts at 7:30. General
admission is $15, and pit passes are $30, while kids (12 and under) are admitted
free with a paid adult admission. Directions are available at
www.gascityi69speedway.com. All KISS races follow the rules of the host
track. Teams need to check with the specific track to answer questions
regarding track rules.
Kokomo Speedway directions are available at
http://www.kokomospeedway.net. On Sunday, adult general admission is $15,
and kids aged 10 and under are free with a paying adult. Pit passes are priced
at $30. The racing program includes street stocks and thunder cars. The pit
gate opens at 3:30 pm and grandstand gates at 4:30. The first race will start
at 6:15.

2010 KISS Champion's Helmet To
Feature Unique VanHorn Graphics
May 5, 2010 – When the 2010 King of Indiana Sprint Series pushes off on Friday,
May 14, at Gas City I-69 Speedway, many questions will be answered over the next
several weeks. Who will capture thrilling KISS victories this year? How many
drivers will score their first KISS win? Will Jon Stanbrough add to his record
of 15 KISS feature triumphs? Will he earn a fifth KISS crown? Or will another
driver break through to claim the title, like Brady Short did last year?
While those questions will be answered on the race tracks over the next several
weeks, one fact is known: the 2010 KISS Champion's Helmet will once again be a
unique piece of art. As in the past, the KISS Champion's Helmet is made possible
through sponsorship by Simpson Performance Products and Sprint Car and Midget
Magazine. This year, Jeff VanHorn, of VanHorn Tint and Accessories, will create
the one-of-a-kind graphic design.
The KISS series promoters basically give the artist a blank sheet of canvas to
work on, a plain white helmet. There are no directions or guidance, other than
“Make it special.” This approach has been successful, given the artistic design
seen on the three previous helmets. While the Simpson helmet is fully state of
the art in the critical areas of safety, materials and construction, it comes
equipped with everything a driver needs to strap it on and go racing. Yet, each
of the Champion's who have won a helmet (Stanbrough in '07 and '08, Short in
'09) have chosen not to wear it for racing, but rather to keep it with their
personal trophies. This only makes sense in that there are no other helmets like
the KISS Champion's, and the only way to get one is to earn it on the race
track.
The KISS promoters welcome VanHorn Tint and Accessories and their special
contribution, which will help make this year's KISS championship extraordinary.
Located in Bloomington, Indiana, VanHorn offers a broad range of products,
including window tinting, LED lights and truck bars, rear window graphics,
specialized graphics for everything from racing cars and helmets, to personal,
company and fleet vehicles. More details, including many photos of their work,
can be seen at their websites,
www.vanhorn1.com
and www.vanhorngear.com.
They can also be found at
http://www.myspace.com/vanhorn1dotcom.
Their office phone number is 812-876-2230.
The 2010 KISS series leads off with a big weekend, starting on Friday, May 14,
at Gas City, with the second event Sunday, May 16, at Kokomo Speedway. The
following weekend, KISS racers will have another doubleheader, with Bloomington
on Friday the 21st and Lawrenceburg Speedway the next night. After a
short break, the series returns at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt on June 5, a
Saturday night. The finale will again be hosted at Paragon Speedway, just south
of Indianapolis, on Saturday, June 26.
Short Prepared To Defend KISS Crown
April 24, 2010 - The defending King of Indiana Sprint Series champion Brady Short is anxious for the first race of this season's KISS tour, at Gas City I-69 Speedway on May 14. Following a highly successful summer that saw Short top the Bloomington Speedway sprint car division, in addition to the KISS title, Short admits that repeating is one of his goals.
“I said last year that I wanted to get twelve wins and I only got nine, so I was a little upset about that. I made my goal a little higher this year. I'm actually reaching for 15. I think that we can do it. We've got a pretty good group of guys around us and we've got a really good car. It's just as matter of having a little luck and being in the right place at the right time.”
Short says that several adjustments that his Indiana Stone Works team made over the winter are paying off. “I'm running a totally different set up than we ever ran last year. So far it's been a pretty good solid year. We went to Florida and had two track records at two different tracks and ran third, third, and fourth. I've already got two wins here in Indiana. So I'm pretty much starting where we left off last year.”
“We were just trying to accomplish where I could get in a little bit more when the track's a little heavier and rougher,” he says, “get in and rotate and still have the drive off that I've always had. I think that we've come on some stuff here that is really going to be good at these places around Indiana. I'm pretty excited about running Sprint Week and a lot of these shows. Hopefully, we can come out and win a lot more races this year.”
Opening night at Gas City will be key to the Bedford, IN, racer's KISS title defense. He calls the quarter mile oval his most challenging track. As it did last year, a strong run will position him for the rest of the series.
“I've never been a big fan of Gas City,” Brady allows. “We started running good there when I ran (for Scott Benic) in the second half of '07. I just can't get a good handle on that place. It's probably just me, because I've been in two different types of race cars and I never have really done that well. We ran fifth in the KISS race there last year and were pretty excited. If we can go there and learn, the new stuff we have going on will work really good at that place. So I'm actually looking forward to going there because I like challenges.”
How do you win the KISS crown? Following Gas City, Short was tenth at Lawrenceburg, third at Bloomington, then scored last at Kokomo after his car was damaged in a heat race. But he bounced back with his first KISS victory at Tri-State before wrapping up the championship at Paragon with a fifth place run. In many ways, the ability to bounce back from a devastating result one night, and score a victory in the next race illustrates the championship caliber of the Short team.
“What's cool about the KISS series is that you're going to different race tracks and it means that you're not going to be good at just one certain race track. It means that you have to be really good at every type of race track and that's what's so fun about the KISS series. You just have to be consistent. You don't have to win a lot of races, you just have to make sure you're in there in the top five and avoid wrecks and stuff like that. Make sure you're there at the end. We actually had a really good KISS deal, we stayed out of trouble and we ran top fives and we won one at Haubstadt,” Brady added. “That's all the goal is,”

January 18. 2009 – It's the time of year when the pulse begins to beat again for racing fans. Gray skies, snow and ice will continue to dominate for a couple months, but racing is surely just around the corner. And as the new schedule for the 2010 King of Indiana Sprint Series shows, it is going to be a huge year for Hoosier racers and fans.
The KISS series represents everything that is good in grassroots sprint car racing. Founded by a handful of track promoters in 2000, the first KISS consisted of six races the next summer. Jon Stanbrough was victorious at both Terre Haute and Putnamville, Justin Marvel won at Haubstadt and Tony Elliott at Gas City, while Bloomington and Paragon fell victims to rain. Second-generation sprint car star Dickie Gaines out-pointed everyone and captured the King's crown in the inaugural year.
Many of the same tracks return for the coming campaign, with Gas City/I-69 Speedway lifting the curtain on Friday, May 14. Bryan Clauson won last year's opening round, taking the lead from Shane Cottle, the 2009 sprint car champion at Gas City, as 36 cars towed into the quarter-mile oval northeast of Indianapolis. While Cottle owns two KISS victories, neither has come at Gas City, and he would love to correct that deficiency.
In order to take advantage of the relatively short commute for both fans and racers, Kokomo Speedway moves their KISS program to the same weekend as Gas City, rolling on Sunday, May 16. Last year, it was Billy Puterbaugh claiming his second KISS win, as Cottle and Jon Stanbrough ran second and third.
A week later, Bloomington and Lawrenceburg Speedways host a big doubleheader, with Bloomington leading off on Friday (May 21), then Lawrenceburg on Saturday (May 22). With 49 cars in the pits at Bloomington last year, Chris Windom notched his first KISS victory while Cottle finished second again. Nic Faas earned his first KISS win at Lawrenceburg's southeastern Indiana speed palace, outrunning Jonathan Hendrick,
The fifth KISS round will unload at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, two weeks later, on Saturday, June 5. The Tri-State race was key last year, as Bedford, Indiana's Brady Short collected the win and took command of the point lead heading into the last race.
The 2010 KISS will come to a conclusion and the new King crowned on Saturday, June 26, at Paragon Speedway. Last summer's KISS finale was filled with drama as four-time King Jon Stanbrough captured the feature, but Short held onto the point championship. With 45 cars in the pits, Stanbrough raced from the eighth row to the front, beating Clauson to the checkers.
KISS isn't a touring series, each track is responsible for conducting the event in accordance with their track rules and the agreed-to guidelines. Drivers draw for heat race starting positions, and features will be 30 laps. KISS events pay $2,500 to win and $250 to start the feature. The B-Main pays $100 to all starters who do not transfer to the feature. The $3,600 point fund awards the top five point finishers, with $1,000 going to the 2010 King of Indiana Sprints.
