UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Night 19: Shirley Captures Thrilling Feature At Brownstown Speedway To Keep Title Hopes Alive
BROWNSTOWN, IN – July 11, 2008 – By Kellen Burns/DIRTcar Racing P.R. –
Brian Shirley says he thinks of everything he needs to do to win 10 minutes before a race.
The Chatham, Ill., driver’s pre-race ritual definitely paid off Friday night, helping him to a thrilling victory in the 40-lap UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals A-Main at Brownstown Speedway.
With the triumph, Shirley moved to within four points of defending Summer Nationals champion Dennis Erb Jr. of Carpentersville, Ill., in the tour points standings. Erb leads the way entering Saturday night’s series finale at Oakshade Raceway in Wauseon, Ohio.
Shirley started sixth in the event and ran a patient race until the late going.
“I was paying attention to what was going on,” said Shirley, who earned $10,000 for his third triumph of the 2008 Summer Nationals. “I saw it was really hard to get by lapped traffic. Luckily my car stuck through the middle.”
Early on polesitter Don O’Neal of Martinsville, Ind., Jeep VanWormer of Pinconning, Mich., and Kevin Claycomb of Vincennes, Ind., all ran nose-to-tail at the front of the pack. O’Neal led until VanWormer used lapped traffic to his advantage on lap 31 to skirt by on the high side.
“When I caught the lapped cars I was soft on tires,” said O’Neal. “I couldn’t move around and I was pretty much stuck there (on the bottom). I knew I was in trouble there with 15 to go.”
VanWormer also couldn’t stay in front. He watched Shirley drive through the middle of the track to grab the lead on lap 37, taking control as VanWormer found himself pinned behind lapped traffic.
“Once we got the lead we caught up to those lapped cars,” said VanWormer, who settled for a runner-up finish. “It just sucks when you want to win so bad and you’re right there in the last few laps.”
Shirley used the late surge to make another visit to RacingJunk.com Victory Lane.
“We just tried to be good there,” said Shirley, who drove Ed Petroff’s No. 3s. “It was just our night, to be honest. The car was good.
“I’m just ready to get the check tomorrow for the $10,000 there (at Oakshade Raceway) – and that’s the bottom line. That’s what means the most.”
O’Neal settled for third place, followed by Erb and Claycomb.
Thirty-seven cars were divided into four groups
for time trials, with O’Neal’s lap of 13.799 seconds the best of the qualifying
session.
Heat winners were O’Neal, Claycomb, VanWormer, Wes Steidinger. Kevin Weaver of
Gibson City, Ill., won the B-Main and Ryan Unzicker of El Paso, Ill., topped the
C-Main.

Brownstown Speedway
Regular Show
May 24, 2008
The 20 lap Modified feature would see Jacoby Hines and Brandon Short lead the field to the green flag. Hines would lead the field around to lead lap one ahead of Short and Brad Barrow. Barrow hit the bottom of the race track to try to work around Short for the second position. Problems would strike the leader, as he broke while leading, this collected Short in the process. Barrow would inherit the lead, as the green flew for the restart. The restart would be brought back for an accident involving Derek Groomer and Dick Phillips in turn two. Matt Boknecht began to pressure Barrow for the lead before he shot high up the track in turn two, losing real estate to Barrow. Boknecht began to use the high side to reel in Barrow just before the caution flew again on lap six for Phillips and Randy Lee in turn four. Barrow held a three car advantage over Boknecht as the field clicked off lap seven. Boknecht shot back to the highside to move around Barrow for the lead on lap eight. At the halfway point it was Boknecht, Barrow, Jerry Davis, Jared Bailey, and Dale Ayers completing the top five. Boknecht began to stretch out his lead over Barrow to about five car lengths as the field took the five to go signal on lap 15. Chad Combs made his way back into the top five, as he moved around Ayers on lap 16. With two to go, Boknecht held a half straight lead over Barrow. It was smooth sailing from there, as Boknecht picked up the win over Barrow, Davis, Bailey, and Combs.
Shawn McIntosh and Robby Johnson led the Pure Stock field to the green for the feature event. McIntosh began to pull out to a healthy margin, stretching his lead to a half straight by lap four. Behind him, Tim Roberts, Josh Reed, and Brian Ballard traded paint for the third position, with Reed nabbing the spot. Reed then had to contend with Ballard, who moved under him for the third position. At the halfway point, McIntosh was over a full straightaway ahead of Johnson. Ballard pulled into the infield while running third on lap 12. With less than five to go, McIntosh had a half track lead before the caution flew for Reed, who had stopped outside of the track in turn one. With two laps to go, McIntosh held a six car lead over Johnson, who was in second. Johnson ran out of time, however, as McIntosh picked up the win over Johnson, Kyle McIntosh, Tim Roberts, and Brian Sims.
The Bomber feature would see Jason Combs and Ben Burton lead the field to the green. Combs would lead the field around to complete the first lap. A three way battle for second began to take shape between Bub Cummings, Burton, and Chris Wilson. The caution would fly on lap three, as Ronnie Pardue spun in turn two. On the restart, Combs and Cummings would battle for the lead, just as the caution flew again on lap four for Aaron Fields. Cummings moved to the high side to battle with Combs again for the lead, bringing Chris Wilson with him. Cummings grabbed the lead on lap five, as Wilson looked to take second away from Combs. Wilson took second from Combs on lap six, and set his sights on Cummings. Combs fought back to battle with Wilson for the runner up spot, taking it back on lap eight. While this was going on, Cummings had stretched his lead out to almost a half straight. At the halfway point it was Cummings, Wilson, Combs, Jamey Wilson, and Burton rounding out the top five. Combs and Chris Wilson began to reel in Cummings with just seven laps to go, bringing the margin to less than five car lengths. Wilson managed to snare second away from Combs while moving through lapped traffic with five to go. Combs and Wilson drew to within less than a car length with two to go.
The Late Model feature would see Cody Mahoney lead lap one, with Tim Prince, and Steve Barnett in tow. Terry Casey had started seventh, but was running second on lap three. Casey then began to pressure Mahoney for the lead as they completed lap four. Casey moved to the high side of the speedway, bringing Barnett with him to battle for the lead. They were three wide for a split second before Barnett lost some momentum coming out of turn two. This left Mahoney and Casey to run door to door for the lead before the caution flew on lap five for James Huff and Joe Janowski. On the restart, Barnett and Casey made contact running for the second position. Casey would hold the spot, leaving Barnett in third. The caution flew on lap seven as Chip Stitsworth spun in turn two. Justin Shaw and Rocky Hodges were involved in a separate incident in turn four. Mahoney would lead the field to the green for the restart. The caution flew on the restart, as debris was spotted in turn two. Casey muscled his way under Mahoney for the lead on the lap seven restart, and immediately shot out to a six car advantage over the field. Barnett moved around Mahoney for the second spot on lap eight. Casey and Barnett began to put distance between themselves and Mahoney. At the halfway point it was Casey, Barnett, Mahoney, Derek Fisher and Prince rounding out the top five. The caution flew once again on lap 13, as Stitsworth spun in turn two. During the caution, Barnett’s mount erupted in smoke, forcing him out of the event. With the green out for the restart, Casey began to pull away once again from the field, opening up a half straight lead over Mahoney. Behind him, Mike Jewell moved into the top five from his 16th starting position on lap 17. With five to go, Casey held a full straight advantage over Mahoney, who was a half straight ahead of Fisher in third. Casey had nothing to worry about, as he motored on to the victory, his second of the year at Brownstown. Rounding out the top five were Mahoney, Fisher, Prince, and Jewell.
Coby Moore had to fend off a hard charging Doug Asbury for the win in the Hornet division. Asbury threw a slide job on Moore coming to the checkers, they made contact, with Moore getting to the line first ahead of Asbury.

BROWNSTOWN SPEEDWAY
HOOSIER DIRT CLASSIC
May 10
The 20 Lap Super Stock feature would see Jeremy Hines and Earl Plessinger make
up the front row. Hines would dart out to the point to lead lap number one with
Plessinger and Lee Hobbs in tow. Alan Magner made it a three way battle for the
second spot between he, Hobbs, and Plessinger. The caution would fly on lap
three, for debris in turn four. On the restart, Jay Deckard would loop his mount
in turn two bringing out the caution. When the green flew on the restart, Hobbs
moved around Plessinger for the second spot, bringing Magner with him to third.
The caution flew once again on lap four, as Tyler Cain spun in turn four. Magner
would pull his entry into the infield with a broken rear end. When the green
flew, Plessinger dropped off the turn two banking, losing several positions.
This would move Winston Howe up to the third position. Up front, Hines enjoyed a
four car length advantage over Hobbs. At the halfway point, it was Hines, Hobbs,
Howe, Jason Thomas, and Darrell Burton rounding out the top five. Hines would
move into lapped traffic on lap 11, allowing Hobbs to close in to within two car
lengths. Hines and Hobbs would clear the backmarkers with five laps to go. By
this time, Hines held about a five car advantage on Hobbs. With four to go,
Hobbs pulled in to within two car lengths only to see his night end with two
laps to go with an engine problem. Hines would then cruise to the victory ahead
of Howe, Burton, Thomas, and Plessinger rounded out the top five.
The Bomber feature started with Jason Combs and Josh Turner on the front row.
Combs, Turner, and Bub Cummings would take it three wide at the line to complete
lap one. Combs then took the lead all to his self as the field completed lap
two. Cummings then took the second spot away from Turner, bringing Jamey Wilson
with him around Turner. Wilson then grabbed second away from Cummings, with
Woods going by Cummings for third. Wilson and Combs made contact for the lead,
Combs fell back a bit, and a four wide battle ensued for the lead between Chris
Wilson, Ben Burton, Woods, and Cummings. Jamey Wilson inherited the lead as the
field bunched up for the restart on lap five. Wilson then pulled off before the
green could fly, giving the lead to Woods. On the restart, Woods jumped out to
about a five car advantage on Chris Wilson as the field completed lap six. A
battle for fourth began to brew between Cummings and Turner with Turner taking
fourth. At the same time, a three way battle for the lead between Wilson, Woods,
and Ben Burton began to take shape on lap nine. Burton would go from third to
first at the halfway point. Wilson then nabbed the lead back away from Burton on
lap 11. Burton then led lap 12 by a bumper on Burton. Wood's night ended as he
pulled off the track on lap 14. Turner then gave up the third spot, as he pulled
pitside on lap 15. This left Chris WIlson and Burton to battle for the lead with
four to go. As the lead duo took the white flag, Wilson seemed to have broke
going into turn one, looping his mount in turn two, bringing out the yellow on
lap 19. A one lap shootout was needed, as Burton would lead Greg Roberts,
Cummings, and David Stephenson to the white flag. Burton would lead the final
lap to the victory followed by Roberts, Stephenson, Cummings, and Aaron Fields
rounded out the top five.
The UMP Modified feature would see John Demoss and Matt Boknecht lead the field
to the green. Demoss would lead the field to complete lap one. Matt Bex moved in
to battle with Boknecht for the second spot. Boknecht then got shuffled back to
the fifth position as Shelby Miles and Lee Hobbs got around him. Bex and Miles
waged war for the second spot on lap five. Bex held on to the second spot, as
Hobbs moved in to battle Miles for third. Miles would hold off Hobbs for the
spot as they completed lap six. The field began to spread out as Demoss took the
halfway signal on lap 10 ahead of Bex, Miles, Hobbs, and Boknecht. The yellow
would fly on lap 11, as Keaton Streeval spun coming out of turn two. On the
restart, Demoss would take the green, with a battle for second shaping up
between Miles and Bex. The caution would slow that battle down, as Nathan
Voorhies and Jared Bailey spun in turn one. The green flew on the restart with
Demoss leading Bex, Miles, Boknecht, and Hobbs into turn one. With five to go,
Miles tried to peek to the outside of Bex to take second, but Bex was too strong
on the bottom of the speedway. Behind them, Boknecht moved around Hobbs for
fourth. Boknecht then took third away from Miles with three to go. Demoss took
the two to go signal about four car lengths ahead of Bex. The caution would fly
just as the white flag began to fly for Streeval, who had stalled on the
backstretch. A green, white, checkered finish was needed as Demoss took the
green on the restart. Bex began to pressure Demoss just as the caution would fly
for Hobbs, who had stopped in turn four. On the restart, Demoss lost control of
his mount in turn two, and spun, bringing out the yellow. Bex inherited the lead
with just two laps remaining. The yellow would fly again as Sam Lee stalled his
mount outside of turn one. Bex lead the field around to take the white flag
about three car lengths ahead of Boknecht. Bex took the checkers with Boknecht,
Miles, Brad Barrow, and Clint Demoss rounding out the top five.
Nelson Gingery led all 15 laps of the Pure Stock main event, not before enduring
a late race charge from Seth Hull and Tim Roberts at the end of the event. Shawn
McIntosh, Robby Johnson, Kyle McIntosh, and Greg Baker rounded out the field.

April 12....Rain
Fighting
extreme muddy conditions and wet grounds, track officials and crew
worked diligently and managed to get the first points races of the 2008
season in without fail. With four classes on hand, a pill draw system
was used to line up heats and speed the program along. Granted, without
the intermission before the consis, and the numerous yellows, races
would have been over by 10:00PM. A pat on the back for the officials is
well deserved. Clint Demoss, Jeremy Hines, Bub Cummings, and Shawn
McIntosh all visited victory lane to cap off the nights activities.
The Pure Stock feature would see Shawn McIntosh and Tim Roberts lead the field to the green flag. McIntosh bolted out to the early lead with Roberts and Kyle McIntosh running second and third. The field started to spread out as they clicked off lap five. McIntosh continued to lead followed by Roberts, Kyle McIntosh, and Josh Reed. At the halfway point, the field remained the same as a caution flew for a safety issue on the Greg Baker car. The caution would fly on the restart, as Roberts looped his mount coming out of turn two to bring out the caution. The team cars of McIntosh and McIntosh led the field to the green on the restart, with Shawn leading Jeff. With five to go it was Shawn McIntosh, Jeff McIntosh, Josh Reed, Mike Keller, and Greg Baker completing the top five.
Kent Robinson and Matt Boknecht would lead the field to the green in the
UMP Modified main event. Boknecht would lead lap one, with Robinson and
Clint Demoss in tow. Demoss would then work under Robinson for the
second spot on lap three. Demoss grabbed the position, putting Robinson
back to third. Demoss then pulled up to the back bumper of Boknecht to
challenge for the lead on lap four. Demoss and Boknecht ran side by side
for the lead on lap six, with Demoss on the bottom and Boknecht up high.
Demoss officially took the lead on lap seven. Demoss opened up about a
two car length advantage over Boknecht as they took the halfway signal.
Robinson was a half a straightaway back in third. Lee Hobbs ran fourth,
with a battle between Greg Amick and John Demoss brewing for fifth.
Amick took the spot on lap 11 and set sail for Hobbs. Amick got around
Hobbs on the bottom on lap 13 to take fourth. With five to go, it was
Demoss leading Boknecht by four car lengths with Robinson third. Hobbs
took the fourth spot back away from Amick, bringing John Demoss with him
to fifth. Amick then dropped out of the race with three laps to go. With
two laps to go, Demoss had stretched his lead out to a half straightaway
on Boknecht. Boknecht would not challenge Demoss at the checkers, as
Demoss won ahead of Boknecht, Robinson, Hobbs, and John Demoss
Bub Cummings and Jamey Wilson would lead the field to the green in the
Bomber main event. Cummings darted out to the lead, with Jamey Wilson
second, and Chris Wilson third. The caution would fly on lap two for
Ronnie Pardue. On the restart, Cummings opened up a three car advantage
over Jamey Wilson. Chris Wilson ran third, with Lee Hobbs fourth, and
Darren Crawhorn fifth. Crawhorn moved under Hobbs to battle for fourth.
Hobbs ended up turned around in turn three on lap five. Cummings took
off once again on the restart and opened up a three car advantage over
Jamey Wilson. The caution would fly once again on lap seven, this time
for Jason Combs on the frontstretch. Cummings led the field down once
again, as Jamey Wilson slid over the bank in turn two, losing the second
spot to Chris Wilson. The caution flag would fly again on lap 12 as a
safety issue for Josh Turner. Turner had broken something in the front
end. After two failed restarts, Cummings once again led the field to the
lap 12 restart. With five to go, it was Cummings, Chris Wilson, Jamey
Wilson, Greg Roberts, and Josh Hayes rounding out the top five. Roberts
looked to the inside of Jamey Wilson to battle for third as the field
took the two to go signal. The field would slow once again on lap 18, as
Kyle Stephenson spun in turn three. Cummings took the green on the
restart, and led the field around to the white flag. It was all
Cummings, as he took the checkers ahead of Chris Wilson, Roberts, Jamey
Wilson, and Hayes.
Jeremy Hines and Chris Hillman would pace the field for the UMP Super
Stock feature. The original start would be brought back due to a Marty
Cooper spin. The restart would be a clean one with Hines bolting out to
the lead. Hines led lap one, with Jay Deckard moving around Hillman to
take second. Hillman then dropped over the turn two banking, losing
several positions. Officially Hillman fell back to fifth. The caution
flew again on lap three, as Tom Ault spun in turn four. Due to going
back to the last scored lap, Hillman retained his third position. On the
restart, Hines darted out to a four car lead over Deckard. The caution
would fly again on lap four, as Rick Hines spun in front of the field in
turn one. During the yellow, Hillman pulled out of the race while
running third. When the green flew, Hines and Deckard pulled away from
the field as a battle for third took place between Tyler Cain and Alan
Magner. Magner held on to the third spot, as back up front Deckard
pulled alongside of Hines for the lead. Deckard grabbed the lead away
from Hines coming down the frontstretch on lap seven. Hines then dove
back under Deckard to regain the lead as they took the halfway signal on
lap 10. The top five at this point were Hines, Deckard, Magner, Cain,
and Jason Thomas. On the restart, Hines jumped out to the lead as
Deckard jumped a rut in turn one allowing Magner by for second. The car
on the move at this point was Nathan Patman. Patman had started 19th
on the grid, and was beginning to work on Jason Thomas for fifth. The
field would slow again on lap 14, as Brandon Routier spun in turn two.
The lap 14 restart saw Hines move out to a two car advantage on Magner
going down the backstretch. Another caution flew before the field could
complete the lap, as Jason Thomas and Jeremy Burton both spun in turn
two. The restart would be brought back, as Hines hit the gas a tad bit
early. Hines hit the gas perfect on the second try, leading the field
around to complete lap 15. With three to go, Hines had built up a half
straight lead over Magner, who was busy trying to fend off Deckard for
the second spot. Magner held steady, and kept the second spot as the
field took the white flag. Up front, it was all Hines, taking the win
ahead of Magner, Deckard, Cain, and Patman rounding out the top five.

Terry Casey Races His Way from 16th to Win 11th Annual “Indiana Icebreaker” at Brownstown Speedway
BROWNSTOWN, IN (March 29, 2008) – Many people thought that when the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series left East Bay Raceway Park back in February that Terry Casey would be out of his comfort zone traveling for the first time on the road in his career and racing on tracks that wouldn’t suit his style but Saturday Night at the Hancock Core sponsored 11th Annual “Indiana Icebreaker” at Brownstown Speedway that adage was thrown out the window as Casey came from his 16th starting spot to win the event on a dry-slick, but fast and racy track. The ever-improving Casey grabbed the lead on lap from Bart Hartman and pulled away for the $10,000 victory before a capacity crowd.
Trailing Casey to the finish line was early pacesetter, Justin Rattliff, the 13th starting Hartman, 3-time Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series National Champion, Earl Pearson Jr. and 24th place starter, Steve Casebolt.
Rattliff looked to be the car to beat early on in the 50-lap affair as the ’07 Lucas Oil Rookie of the Year looked strong from the get go as fellow front row starter Wes Steidinger and long-time Brownstown Speedway veteran John Gill in the Warrior House Car taking the top three spots from the outset of the race.
A car on the move in this first portion of the race was Rohn Moon. Moon a former World Karting Association Champion roared from his seventh starting spot to momentarily take third from Steidinger who had slipped a spot when Gill went around him a lap earlier, but one circuit later Steidinger was back into that spot re-passing Moon.
The first caution of the race came out on lap seven and was for Illinois drivers Dennis Erb Jr. and Billy Drake in turn number four. On the restart Rattliff resumed his position on the point with 11th starting Don O’Neal shooting up to second place when the green flag came back out again. With ten laps in the record books Rattliff was starting to see pressure from O’Neal with Steidinger, Gill and Earl Pearson Jr. now in the thick of things as he was up to fifth place.
The second caution for Kevin Claycomb would slow the action once more on lap 12. Again on the restart Rattliff would be out in front followed closely by O’Neal as the race would really heat up even further than it was as 13th place starter Bart Hartman made an unbelievable move on the outside on lap 16 to come out of nowhere to grab second from O’Neal.
Hartman’s high flying antics carried him all the way to the lead two laps later as he stormed around Rattliff to take over the lead. Another car following Hartman up through the pack was 16th starting Terry Casey. Casey would pass O’Neal for third and then his surge would allow him to overtake Rattliff on lap 19, a lap before the final caution of the race would come out for Matt Miller, whose car had stalled just off the main straightaway as he was heading to the pit area.
With 30 laps left in the race it looked like it was going to be a shootout to the finish among the top five drivers as Hartman, Casey, Rattliff, O’Neal and Pearson were loaded for bear each seeking the $10,000 first place check.
On the final restart of the race Hartman was still riding the rim of the race with Casey developing his strategy racing in the middle of the track as Pearson got a good restart as he moved by Rattliff for third on lap 21 as the top two were starting to pull away.
Hartman’s lead after the restart would last until the 24th circuit when Casey made his move coming off of turn number four to take his first lead of the race. The two would go door to door for two more laps until Casey cleared Hartman.
With 20 laps to go Casey was starting to gain full control of the race as Rattliff had regained the third spot from Pearson and he then caught up to and passed Hartman for second. But at this point Casey was building his lead as the frontrunners were entering traffic for the first time all race long.
Casey continued to stretch his lead in the waning laps as Rattliff had pulled away enough from Hartman to build some precious car lengths between the two. Hartman meanwhile had his hands full trying to hold off both Pearson and Casebolt, who had to take a provisional to make the starting field.
Those three drivers had an eventful final ten laps as Hartman was able to hold both of them off to gain some valuable points. Pearson barely was able to fend off Casebolt, who drove a terrific race as the reigning Eldora Dream winner looked good in coming from dead last to gain a top five finish.
As chief starter Tim Montgomery’s checkered flag waved Casey race across the line well out leading the final 27 laps for his second career Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series triumph. The win also allowed the 39-year-old New London, WI native to take over the championship point’s standings lead and the Quarter Master Rookie of the Year points lead. Rattliff, who led 17 laps, finished a solid second.
In the Lucas Oil victory lane, Casey was joined by several well wishers as he would say that maybe his critics that he couldn’t win on a dryslick track were a thing of the past. “I got so tired of hearing that down at East Bay that I couldn’t drive on this type of track, we won down there from the pole, but I don’t care a win is a win, the car was just awesome tonight I spent a week down at Rayburn’s putting this new one together I’ve been customer cars ever since I got back from Florida,” said Casey who was joined by his crew chief wife Lori and engine builder, Bill Schlieper.
Coming from Wisconsin where they’re still several inches of snow on the ground Casey was just glad to be racing in weather that was just a little warmer than at home. “I come down here and people blame me for bringing the cold weather with me,” laughed Casey who gladly will take the prize money back to the freezing temperatures in Badger Land.
Rattliff’s second place was satisfying for the 20-year-old driver. “The car worked good for about 20 laps and we dropped back a few spots and got back into second and we were running down Casey, but he got away from me in the last 15 laps and we fell behind a half a straightaway or so, congrats to Casey on the him, we felt we had a car capable of winning, but we’ll take second.”
Hartman’s daring moves a quarter of the way through the event may have been his downfall as he may have very well ended up in victory lane instead of Casey. “We had a little bit different tire combination and I really didn’t want to be in the lead when we were cause I thought the car was going to fade and we did a little bit, we had that little episode in turn two and I told myself just settle down, Terry and Justin ran a good and they had a little harder tire on than I did and that was the difference,” said Hartman who moved up the seventh in the points after Brownstown.
Casey’ winning C.J. Rayburn Monte Carlo SS is sponsored by Arnie Ranta Motorsports, Brewer Concrete Construction and Arnie’s Sleds and Trailers and has a Bill and John Schlieper Pro Power Engine under the hood.
Rattliff who also drives a C.J. Rayburn Chassis with a Pro Power engine moved to fifth in the points in the James Rattliff owned Rattliff Motors sponsored car with Hartman’s Imler’s Poultry of Altoona, PA sponsored Rocket Monte Carlo SS finishing just ahead of the Bobby Labonte Racing/Life Long Locks/MasterSbilt Dodge entry of Pearson as Casebolt in his Fatheadz.com/Rocket GTO is now second to Casey in the championship points standings.
Completing the top ten were Don O’Neal, Mike Marlar, John Gill, Steve Barnett and Dennis Erb Jr.
In preliminary action John Gill was the PRC fast qualifier for the 61 entrants with a lap of 13.798 seconds. Wayne Chinn, Justin Rattliff, John Gill, Matt Miller, Brian Birkhofer and Wes Steidinger won the Hawk Brake, AFCO Racing Products and Tiger Rear Ends sponsored heat races. The Mason Racin’ rebel Shock Dyno and Quarter Master sponsored B-mains went to Dennis Erb Jr. and Steve Barnett.
The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series will next be in action with a three-day jaunt to the State of Georgia starting on Thursday Night, April 3rd at the Swainsboro Raceway in Swainsboro, GA for a $7,000 to win event, followed on Friday Night, April 4th for a $10,000 to win race at Screven Motor Speedway in Sylvania, GA and the weekend tops off at the Golden Isles Speedway in Brunswick, GA on Saturday Night, April 5th for a $10,000 to win race that will taped by SPEED Channel and shown on a date and time to be announced in the future.

Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series 11th Annual "Indiana
Icebreaker" This Saturday, March 29th; Former Brownstown
Speedway Track Champions Ready to Go
CORONA, CA (March 25, 2008) - They have combined for 187 career Late Model feature wins at Brownstown Speedway and come this Saturday Night at least six former track champions will be trying to capture the Hancock Core sponsored 11th Annual "Indiana Icebreaker" against the toughest competition in dirt late model racing as the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series visits the historic racing facility.
The race fans at Brownstown have been known as the most loyal and the loudest at cheering on their favorites for years and with the touring Lucas Oil drivers hitting the quarter-mile oval on Saturday Night there is a good chance that one of the former Brownstown Speedway late model champions will end up in victory lane.
Since 1952 Brownstown Speedway has been in operation with legendary drivers such as Jim Curry, Ray Godsey, Gene and Russ Petro and driver/chassis builder C.J. Rayburn all taking their rightful place in the National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame located at Florence Speedway in Union, KY. Another former track champion, Mike Jewell was inducted into the NDLHOF last year after winning the annual "Sportsmanship Award."
Heading into the "Indiana Icebreaker" this weekend look for Rayburn and Jewell to be joined by John Gill, Don O'Neal, Steve Barnett and Tim Prince to represent the impressive listing of former Brownstown track champions expected to be on hand to battle it out with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series.
While Gill, Barnett and O'Neal are ranked second, third and fourth all-time in feature wins at Brownstown (Jim Curry is the all-time winningest driver). Those three have combined for 149 feature wins as Jewell (24) wins, Rayburn (13) and Prince(1) all will be trying to not only make the $10,000 to win race, but hold the checkered flag in victory lane afterwards.
O'Neal's success with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series is well documented as he has finished runner-up to Earl Pearson Jr. twice in the series history final point's standings. O'Neal who took the first Lucas Oil Series win of the season back in February at East Bay now has ten career wins on the tour. He has accumulated 47 career wins at Brownstown. This will be his first race at Brownstown driving for his new car owners this year Jeff and Eddie Harrod of Frankfort, KY.
Gill, who just recently returned to drive for the Sanford and Sandy Goddard Warrior House Car based out of Knoxville, TN come into this weekend's action with the second most career wins at Brownstown (54), but he has never won a Lucas Oil race in his career. A win in the upcoming "Indiana Icebreaker" would please many of Gill's several family, friends and fans who will be on hand this Saturday Night at Brownstown. "We've won the Icebreaker a couple of times in the past and with this new ride we are looking forward to having some good luck, even if I don't win if we can come away with a good finish a top five against the Lucas guys we would be really happy," said the 48 year old veteran who earned "Rookie of the Year" honors at Brownstown back in 1981 and is in his second stint in the Warrior House Car.
"With Donnie, Steve, Mike and Tim that's about it for former champions who are still racing every weekend, we were all rookies once and I guess now we are the old guard or veterans or whatever you want to call us, but I know all of us are still capable of winning races," said Gill.
Barnett, who captured his third track title at Brownstown in 2007, scored three wins at the quarter-mile oval last year, but remarkably the former STARS Rookie of the Year has never won a $10,000 to win race in his career. With his experience at Brownstown you can never count out the driver who has participated in more Jackson 100's than any other driver in the track's most prestigious event. He has 48 career wins at Brownstown.
Jewell, who will be behind the wheel of his familiar #9 has won at least one feature event at Brownstown every year since 2000 is seeking his first career $10,000 victory as well as the Scottsburg, IN native won his first ever feature at Brownstown back in 1991 and is an eight-time "Butterball" Wooldridge Memorial winner.
Prince, who won his first and only feature at Brownstown during his championship run in 2006, is also expected to be on hand this Saturday at Brownstown as the "Heltonville Hornet" will be trying to race his way into the event.
This will be the first of three visits to the Hoosier State of Indiana during the 2008 season for the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series which has its most ambitious schedule to date with 44 race dates confirmed in 17 states.
On March 29th at Brownstown there will be a special autograph session for the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series drivers from 3:40-4:40 PM. Hot laps are scheduled to get underway at 5:30 PM.
Brownstown Speedway is located one mile southeast of Brownstown, Indiana on State Road 250 at the Jackson County Fairgrounds. For more information you can visit the track's website at www.brownstownspeedway.com.

CORONA, CA (March 18, 2008) - The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series will visit the Brownstown Speedway in Brownstown, IN on Saturday Night, March 29th for the Hancock Core sponsored 11th Annual "Indiana Icebreaker". The rain date for the event will be Sunday, March 30th.
The stars of the nation's premier traveling dirt late model tour plus a host of standout regional and local drivers will begin the post-Florida part of the season which kicked off at East Bay Raceway Park in Tampa, FL with Billy Moyer of Batesville, AR emerging from the week-long competition with the points lead after winning three times in his Victory Circle Chassis. Moyer also captured the '08 DART Winternationals Points Fund title which was worth $7,500. Moyer is also the defending race winner of the Indiana Icebreaker which again this year pays $10,000 to the winner.
"We are looking forward to having the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series back at Brownstown Speedway," said promoter Tim Keithley who is entering his third year in charge of the quarter-mile oval which has been in operation since 1952. "The Lucas Oil Series has helped put Brownstown back on the map not only with the quality of drivers they have but the professionalism they offer the dirt racing industry," said the man who started working at Brownstown several years ago driving a wrecker after watching his dad race there for several years. "We added some new dirt last year, but it didn't work out like we wanted to so we took it off after the Jackson 100 and the racing surface stayed smooth and most importantly was racy all night during our final shows of 2007," commented Keithley who feels strongly that not only this year's regular racing programs, but his special events will greatly improve with a better racing surface. One thing for certain the timely shows that Lucas Oil and Brownstown have put on in the last couple of years will remain a top priority.
There have been improvements made to the Jackson County Fairgrounds facility this past off-season with new fencing and safety cables in place with more gravel added around the grandstand area. Also the fair board is working to make improvements to the open bleachers sections and the newest addition is adding a family section where alcohol is prohibited.
"Last year's Indiana Icebreaker at Brownstown was a huge success," said Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series Director, Ritchie Lewis. "A standing-room-only crowd packed the grandstands and pits to see what was arguably the most talented field assembled in several years at Brownstown, said Lewis. "Brownstown Speedway is one of the most well known tracks in dirt track racing and we are excited to be going there on March 29th and for the Jackson 100 in September which pays $20,000 to win this year."
Brownstown's Indiana Icebreaker featuring the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series will be the next race that 20 drivers will be eligible for the "Winners Circle Program" and the "Jasper Engines Road to Wheatland bonus monies. This is an incentive program that will pay the top ten drivers in the 2008 Championship Points an extra $600 each with perfect attendance throughout 2008. The "Jasper Engines Road to Wheatland" Program will also pay an additional $600 to each of the ten highest points drivers from the final 2007 Championship Points standings that follow the Road to Wheatland with perfect attendance but are not in the current top ten in points.
