Macon, The loyal fans

of Macon Speedway came out to the track one last time Saturday night.  The final weekend of racing for the 2007 season featured a handful of championship caliber events. Macon Speedway ran both the 3rd AnnualIllinois State Street Stock Championship and Hornet World Championship in one huge action packed night. Also being handed out were the track point championships in BARABECK Communications Modified, Hogan Grain/Kubota Sportsman, Street Stock and Hornet classes. Mike Hammerle fromSt. Charles, Missouri took home theChevrolet Late Model track championship on September 1st.  Tonight also marked the final drawing for Tony’s Tahoe and the VlogCafe.com $10,000.
Steve Ewing didn’t disappoint any of his fans in the 3rd AnnualIllinois State Street Stock Championship by taking the lead in less than five laps and cruising to the checkered flag. Starting from the middle of the pack, Ewing worked his way through the field with his usual dominance and professionalism. Ewing also captured the street stock points championship with his astounding 13th feature win of the season, his eighth consecutive. Ewing’s closest points competition, Larry Russell Jr., couldn’t get his car running for the feature race after taking some damage early in the day. Russell had done an excellent job keeping the points race close, only down 20, despite not winning a single feature all season.
The Hornet World Championship will go to Matt Turley, his first hornet feature win of the season at Macon Speedway. Turley’s car bolted to the front on lap eight and held off all the great competition. The 2007 Hornet Track Championship was won by Bruce Dulgar of Decatur. Dulgar finishes this hornet racing season with a track high 5 wins. Second place points finisher James Hankins was down an insurmountable 148 points at the beginning of tonight feature.
Greg Kimmons’ final win of the season also looked like the easiest. On the same night Pleasant Plains native Kimmons won his sixth Hogan Grain/Kubota Sportsman feature race at Macon Speedway, he also locked up the 2007 Sportsman track championship. Decatur’s Mike Pickering was only 20 points behind Kimmons going into the last race of the season, but Kimmons was just too fast for Pickering to make up the difference.

The BARBECK Communications Modified feature race was won by Springfield Jeff Ray. Not a track regular, Ray has won two feature races in just three tr ack appearances. Macon Speedway legend Jim Leka added another Modified Track Championship to his impressive resume. Leka didn’t exactly bring his “A” game this week, finishing outside the top five, but had a comfortable 106 point lead over his closest challenger, Shelbyville’s Clark Robertson.

MACON -- Fans had a perfect evening for racing at Macon Speedway Saturday night. With the track in pristine condition due to some very lucky cool weather, the stage was set for some fast, high-banked racing action on the legendary dirt at Macon. Even veteran drivers such as Jim Leka from Illiopolis were taking the high groove. On any other night, experience drivers would stick to the bottom of the turns like glue. Chalk it up to an aggressive maintenance strategy by the track crews at Macon Speedway that have done a great job all year long keeping the track in racing form.

In a controversial finish in the BARBECK Communications Modified feature race, Jim Leka would take the checkered flag, his sixth of the season. With five laps to go, Leka and Brian McLemore got together exiting turn two. Leka lost control of his car and spun. The field restarted with Leka in first place. Fans in the stands were split on whether or not Leka or McLemore should've started in the lead. It seemed as though McLemore's contact on Leka was unintentional, but a few vociferous fans seemed to disagree. Decatur's Al Crawley ran a good race and finished in third.

Dave Smith was back in winning form again, taking the Hogan Grain/Kubota Sportsman feature over second and third place finishers Mike Pickering and Greg Kimmons. Smith started on the pole and had to use every bit of racing experience to keep two very successful Macon Speedway regulars behind him. This win marks Smith's first at Macon since June 14th, a winless streak he was happy to end.

All the way from St. Charles, Missouri, Mike Hammerle is the 2007 Chevrolet Late Model Track Champion. “I just like a short track.” Hammerle joked when asked why he makes the long drive all the way to Macon. Hammerle’s only win at the track came on July 28th, but anytime he’s in the field, you can be sure he’s finishing toward the front.

Jayme Zidar took the checkered flag in the last Late Model feature race of the 2007 Macon Speedway season. All the way from Greenfield, Wisconsin, Zidar ended his season with five total feature wins, the most of any driver this year. “I appreciate all the fans supporting us through the year.” Zidar remarked during his post-race interview.

It's been far too long since the hundreds of Katie Lord fans got to see their driver take a checkered flag. Lord crossed the finish line first in Street Stock heat #2 in front of Springfield's Roy Magee. In front of a standing ovation, Lord took her victory lap. In the post-race interview, Lord said she plans on running in the modified class next year.

The sun will rise, you’ll pay your taxes, and Steve Ewing will win the Street Stock feature at Macon Speedway. Ewing won his 12th feature of the season and continues his astounding seven race winning streak. Cruising into victory lane, as he’s done so many times this season, Ewing was asked if it’s a foregone conclusion that he’ll win the Street Stock Championship this year, “I’ve always had bad luck in the big races. I don’t want to jinx myself.” Bruce Dulgar tacked another Hornet feature win onto his total for the season, now up to five.

MACON
08-25-07
-- A tremendous crowd turned out at Macon Speedway Saturday. As the last month of the races is winding down the track championship races are just starting to heat up. Every driver on the track is trying to pass every car he can to collect those precious points and maybe capture an elusive track championship.

Jayme Zidar put on an impressive show winning Chevrolet Late Model heat #2 that included some Late Model heavy hitters including Kirby Damery, Greg Kimmons, and Mike Hammerle. It took Zidar all of one lap to pass three cars into second place. Just one turn later, Zidar had taken the lead from Hammerle. Heat number 1 was dominated by Steve Sheppard Jr. and got fans ready for another great late model feature showdown between he and Zidar.

Jeff Graham held off all challengers to win the Hogan Grain/Kubota Sportsman feature. This well deserved win marks Graham's first win of the season at Macon Speedway. Mike Pickering traded the lead with Graham a few times during the race but faded late in the race slipping all the way back to fourth.

Jeff Ray’s silky smooth driving style paid off in tonight’s BARBECK Communications Modified feature race. It’s not too often fans get to see the blue #50 of Ray, but he obviously made his mark tonight. Ray took the lead early from Decatur’s Al Crawley who couldn’t find the speed in his usual high line.  Mark Tullis ran a patient race and finished in second in front of track regular Clark Robertson who held off a tenacious run by Shawn Bohm, who finished in fourth.

The Chevrolet Late Model race came down a five lap shootout. Chris Dick was on the rear bumper of Jayme Zidar for five solid laps of inside racing. Zidar started on the pole and stayed there to the checkered flag for his fourth win of the season. Outside pole sitter Steve Sheppard Jr., probably the favorite to win, refused to give up on the outside groove. On the lap 13 restart, Sheppard’s car shot to life and seemed to challenge for the lead. But whatever magic he found left after just a few laps. Sheppard settled for third.

The winning streak lives. Steve Ewing’s eleventh Street Stock feature win is also his sixth consecutive. Troy Dodson started in front of Ewing and used every blocking move he could think of before Ewing squeezed inside with one lap to go. Ewing increased his point lead in street stock class. “This is great for the points, (Larry) Russell’s been tough all year.” Ewing said in the post-race interview.

On the night his son, Zach, captured his first career checkered flag in hornet heat #2, Jeff Dodd took the win in the hornet feature race. Dodd has won the last two hornet feature races at Macon and moves his total to four wins this season.

MACON....08-11-07 – The heat and humidity early in the day didn’t keep fans away from the high banked dirt track action at Macon Speedway Saturday night. Track crews did an excellent job keeping plenty of moisture in the track to ensure some fast ‘two groove’ racing. Macon Speedway also hosted the Pinewood Derby for the Boys Scouts of America, handing out trophies to the winners. Even Wal-Mart of Springfield chipped in with a bicycle giveaway won by derby open division winner Blake Thompson.
Local media stars jumped into the four cylinder hornets to race a few laps around Macon Speedway. Troy Hayes of the Herald and Review won the race hands down over all the competition. Asked about his racing experience at Macon Hayes remarked, “I was scared senseless.”
The class of the field in the Chevrolet Late Model feature race was once again Steve Sheppard Jr. of New Berlin. Sheppard put several car lengths between himself and the field on every restart. Shane Tomlin was in the long battle with Don Cisco for second place, but Cisco dropped out of the race after a late wreck. Cory Daugherty snuck into third place.
Jim Leka won his fifth BARBECK Communications Modified race of the season. Joe Strawkas from Buffalo had an excellent run keeping his car up front all race long and finishing second. Dick Taylor held on to a wild race car to finish in third.
The Hogan Grain/Kubota Sportsman race was dominated by #14C Alan Crowder. Local regular Greg Kimmons worked his way up to second but spun out trying to change his driving line to make the pass for the lead. Norm Wood from Sullivan inherited second place from Kimmons and hung on to the checkered flag.
Steve Ewing of Decatur kept his winning streak alive in the Street Stock Feature, extending it to five checkered flags in a row and ten feature wins this season. Larry Russell Jr. found himself in a familiar situation, second place with Ewing’s #95 right out the windshield. Ewing also broke the tie for the championship points lead in the street stock class that he held with Russell. A mere five separates the two.
One winning streak did end tonight in Macon. Jeff Dodd held on to win a dogfight with five time feature winner Bruce Dulgar who was looking to extend his winning streak to four. This marks the second win of the season for Dodd who always competes for the win in his #22X hornet complete with signature chrome wheels.

MACON July 28, IL -- A whopping 121 car field showed up to race on the dirt of Macon Speedway Saturday. This week's racing finished a two-day Modified event in conjunction with Morgan County Speedway. Three Dog Night sponsored tonight's events which included an intermission Wiener dog race courtesy of DeLong Bed and Biscuit and a $100 prize purse donated by Morgan Distributing.

The BARBECK Communications feature was lead from start to finish by Dick Taylor from Springfield who earned himself $1,500 in the effort.  Jeff Leka finished in second place after getting through a tough field of competitors in the top five.  Jim Leka held off a frustrated Kyle Logue for third place by blocking the bottom of the track Logue runs successfully so often.
Dick Taylor and Jeff Leka will be the majority winners of the $800 purse for leading the points between Friday’s race at Morgan County Speedway and tonight feature race.  Jeff Leka won on Friday and finished second on Saturday while Taylor finished in second Friday and won the feature at Macon.

Steve Sheppard Jr. started from the pole in the Chevrolet Late Model feature and that usually means he's going to win it. Tonight was no exception.  Sheppard once again lived up to expectations by winning another feature race at Macon. Mike Hammerle passed a few cars late in the race to grab second place in a tough Sportsman race.
Steve Sheppard Jr. won both of the Firecracker 50's in July and was leading by a stretch in the Herald and Review 100 last week before breaking a shock.

Wes O'Dell won the Hogan Grain/Kubota Sportsman feature in front of track regular Greg Kimmons. O'Dell and Kimmons traded the spot again and again, but O'Dell found his preferred line late in the race and drove away from the pack. Jeff Graham from Stonington inherited third place after Dave Smith's #73P broke down in the last few laps.
Greg Kimmons' second place finish breaks a three-way tie for the points lead that he shared with Mike Pickering and Scott Landers.

Steve Ewing won his fourth consecutive Street Stock feature race at Macon Speedway and Bruce Dulgar won his third consecutive hornet feature. Ewing’s #95 “Lightning McQueen” decaled car has taken the checkered flag first in nine feature races this season. Bruce Dulgar’s 4 cylinder has won five times in 2007.

Fans got a blast from the past as racing veterans Roger Drake and Jim Leka found themselves in a one-on-one race in BARBECK Communications Modified heat #3. Leka passed the third place car with only a handful of laps left and looked ahead to Drake's significant lead. Drake crossed the finish line in first with a charging Leka right on his bumper.

(Macon) - Saturday night's racing at Macon Speedway was accented by the annual Herald & Review 100 with 31 late model drivers vying for $6,000 to win. Fans poured in from all over the area to watch their favorite drivers along with some great talent from out of town. Macon Speedway also welcomed the men and women from both BARBECK Communications and the Herald and Review.

The key to winning the Herald and Review 100 is not to lead lap 1, it's to lead lap 100. Wes Steidinger sat in the top five most of the race but took the lead on lap 81 from 2004 H&R 100 winner Don "The Real Deal" O'Neal. The class of the field, Steve Sheppard Jr., had a strong lead going into lap 31 when he suddenly slowed in turn four , peeled off the track and out of the race. The crowd cheered for Justin Allgaier as he moved through the field late, but couldn't pass the leaders. Allgaier ended up in third place.

BARBECK Communications associate, Jason Ginsler got to wave the checkered flag for Jim Leka as he won the Modified feature. Curt Rhoades had a great race finishing in second place giving Leka a run for his money in the final few laps after a restart. Todd Kirkland started off with a solid lead on the pack early in the 20 lap race. Kirkland unexpectedly spun out in the bottom of turn one bringing out a caution. Kirkland had to restart in the back but spun out his car again before simply throwing in the towel.

The Hogan Grain/Kubota Sportsman feature race showed fans a tremendous three car race for first place.  Phil Moreland had to use his car as a road block to hold off the advances of #27 Greg Kimmons on the inside and #41 Scott Landers on the outside. Moreland didn't make any friends with his aggressive blocks all race long, but finished the race in first place. Kimmons tried a daring inside pass on Moreland on the final turn but lost his grip and dropped back to third place. Scott Landers took advantage of Kimmons’ mistake and stole second.

Steve Ewing led every lap of the street stock feature on the dirt at Macon. The #95 "Lightning McQueen" is a favorite among the younger fans at Macon Speedway and won the race despite having Larry Russell Jr.'s #X7 on his bumper throughout the race.

Bruce Dulgar's having a great season winner of yet another hornet feature at Macon. Dulgar is the weekly hornet favorite at Macon Speedway. He also won last week's hornet feature and a host of others during the 2007 season.

Multiple feature race winner Kyle Logue hit the outside wall of turn four hard during Late Model qualifying. Logue planned on racing both the Herald and Review 100 and the BARBECK Communications Modified feature races, but decided not to continue driving after such a violent wreck.

7-14-07 Wrap-Up
Macon, IL Track co-owner Kenny Wallace and St. Louis Cardinals mascot Fred Bird visited Macon Speedway Saturday night to kick off the thunderous roar that is dirt track racing at Macon Speedway. This week’s events were made possible by the Skeff Distributing Company. The BARBECK Communications Modifieds ran their feature as part of the 2007 WolfPack Challenge.
Heat races at Macon Speedway gave cheering fans several side by side finishes including Mike Hammerle edging out Greg Kimmons in Late Model Heat #2 and Joe Reed’s hornet finishing in front of Fred Reed Jr. by mere inches. NASCAR star Kenny Wallace delighted fans by playing the role of announcer for hornet heat #2 in which Mike Morse finished first in front of George Ewing and Brandon Watts.
Scott Landers had to fight off #9 Mike Pickering with some gutsy high speed blocks to grab the win in the Hogan Grain/Kubota Sportsman feature. Front row starters Greg Kimmons and Dave Smith got together in turn three of the very first lap forcing their night to end early.
The BARBECK Communications Modified feature was led from start to finish by local favorite Kyle Logue. In a tough battle for positions all over the track in a huge 21 car field, Chris Veech, Aaron Burcham, Wes McClara and Clark Robertson rounded out the top five.
Logue also did an outstanding job maneuvering through lapped traffic in the Late Models feature. Jayme Zidar, winner of the last two features at Macon Speedway, ran his car high in the turns finishing second. Mike Hammerle finished in third place while being crowded by several lapped cars.
With flapping sheet metal from the right rear of his car scraping against the outside wall in every turn, Steve Ewing passed car after car to move into the lead and hold on for yet another street stock feature win. Larry Russell Jr. finished in second after holding off a tough challenge from Brian Cassell.
The hornet feature ended with a few cars “leaning” on each other. Bruce Dulgar took first place by a stretch but Jeff Dodd and Fred Reed jr. crossed the line pushing against each other for second place. Dodd won the spot by a nose.

The race started 18 cars, but only eight cars restarted after a caution with three laps to go. Springfield’s Randy Myers chased down Logue after each the frequent yellow flags, but crossed the finish in second place. Jim Leka scooted inside Roger Drake in the exit of turn four on the final lap to steal away third.
The Late Model feature gave racing fans a dose of spectacular side-by-side racing between Jason Cleaver and #40 Greg Kimmons. Cleaver eventually put Kimmons behind him by using a high outside line that wasn’t paying off for many other drivers. In a heavily contested four-care race for third, John Woodard grabbed the spot.
Terry Reed, Larry Russell Jr., Steve Ewing, and Brian Cassell were bumper-to-bumper through the final turns of the Street stock feature. Reed held off a lot of tough challengers to earn himself a $500 prize in the Street Stock Saturday Night Special. Russell Jr. finished second in front of Ewing whose “Lighting McQueen” decaled car took some damage during some close racing.
Another victory in the hornet class was captured by Joe Reed. Runner-Up Jeff Dodd had his car on the inside of Reed in the last turn of the last lap but lost grip and hesitated just enough for Reed to cross the finish line in first place. Past hornet feature winner Bruce Dulgar finished in third place.
NASCAR Stars Kenny Wallace, Ken Schrader, Tony Stewart and local Promoter Bob Sargent purchased Macon Speedway in January of 2007.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
KENNY WALLACE TOPS NASCAR STARS AT MACON SPEEDWAY
(Macon) – Energy was high on and off the track at Macon Speedway for the Night of NASCAR Stars on Thursday night, their second of three nights scheduled for the 2007 season. NASCAR stars Marcus Ambrose, Jason Leffler, Stephen Leicht, Mike Wallace, Steve Wallace, J.J. Yeley, Kyle Busch, Casey Mears, Bobby Labonte and David Reutimann along with Ray Evernham and Aaron Pierce raced modifeds side by side with Macon Speedway co-owners Kenny Wallace and Ken Schrader.
The evening festivities were sponsored by US Army, celebrating their 232nd birthday at the track. The Mid America Sport Parachute Club of Taylorville kicked off racing with a four man sky dive, including 68 year old Ron McFarland, onto the front stretch.
During an intermission in racing, track co-owner Tony Stewart phoned in a donation of $5,000 to the Victory Junction Gang Camp that was matched with donations from Macon Speedway, the Blue Mound Lions Club and tonight’s 50/50 winner for a total donation of $10,000. Northeast Community Fund Food Bank and Meridian School District also benefited from donations from Macon Speedway owners.
Kenny Wallace took the checkered flag for the win in the star-studded Modified feature in front of a full capacity crowd on their feet. The 25 lap race featured all of the visiting NASCAR drivers and one owner, Ray Evernham, who seemed to lose control of his car frequently through the turns. “I’m here for the comic relief” Evernham joked during the pre-race ceremonies. Ken Schrader couldn’t seem to get any closer to Wallace than a car length at any time during the race. Australian driver Marcus Ambrose finished in third and David Reutimann also put in a good showing, doing some impressive inside and outside moves on the track and finishing in fourth place.
The stars of NASCAR also ran their heats just as competitively. Ken Schrader and Kenny Wallace had a great battle for the lead as Schrader made an exciting inside move on Wallace and took the race. The second heat of modifieds featured Jason Leffler beating out Mike Wallace.
The local stars were out in force as well and gave the fans a full 19 car feature race in the Hogan Grain/ Kubota Sportsman series. Dave Smith from Monticello took the feature race by a wide margin, but the action was farther back in the pack. The large field of cars gave racing fans at Macon a lot of beating and banging out on the track which included #27 Greg Kimmons, who finished second, missing the sheet metal on his car’s entire right side and #18 Shane Tomlin, who finished in third place, getting hit and losing the great handling which had him in the lead early in the race.
In the street stock feature, Steve Ewing of Decatur took his fourth consecutive race at Macon Speedway. Roy Magee held the lead early and blocked Ewing for as long as he could. Once Ewing cut to the inside of Magee, the cars stacked up behind made their way through as well, knocking Magee back to a fourth place finish. Decatur natives Larry Russell Jr. and Brian Cassell finished second and third.
Kenny Wallace took his time at the end of the night to address his cheering fans. “This is all about the fans. This is all about TV. And this is all about bringing racing back to Macon.”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
STEVE SHEPPARD, JR. SWEEPS LITE BEER TWIN 50’s AT MACON SPEEDWAY
(Macon, Ill.) Miller Lite sponsored the Lite Beer Twin 50’s at Macon Speedway Saturday Night, on a day with near perfect racing weather.
The Raminator monster truck made an appearance on the track as well. With Mark Hall at the wheel, Raminator crushed four cars under the cheers of a packed house of fans. Melissa Johnson of Kincaid, IL, went home the lucky winner of a previously owned Chevrolet courtesy of Decatur Used Cars in the second Kenny’s Crazy Car Caper.
The Lite Beer Twin 50’s were dominated by Steve Sheppard Jr. from New Berlin who won both races and earned himself a $500 bonus. In the first of two Late Model tests of endurance, Sheppard Jr. lapped every car with the exception of #40 Greg Kimmons and #96 Cory Daugherty, who Sheppard Jr. was right behind at the end of the race. Jamie Zidar was Sheppard’s primary challenger in Twin 50 number two. Both Sheppard Jr. and Zidar kept getting held up by lapped traffic, but Sheppard’s car was too good on the outside of the track for Zidar to catch up. Cory Daugherty finished second and fourth in Twin 50’s.
Macon Speedway ran semi-features in both the BARBECK Communications Modified class and street stocks. Dennis Vandermeersch won the modified semi-feature being trailed by Steve Shaw from Mount Zion who poured smoke from his car through the majority of the race. The street stock semi went to Justin Hill who led from green-to-checkered flag with Jim Cardoni and Wayne Orrick finishing second and third.
The Sportsman feature race was won by Greg Kimmons who squeezed by Dave Smith on the inside of the track. Scott Landers from Taylorville finished in third place. For the BARBECK Communications Modifieds, Jim Leka from Illiopolis held off several pass attempts by regular favorite Kyle Logue who just couldn’t find the grip he needed around the bottom of the track to make the pass. Steve Ewing again dominated the Street Stock feature in the Lightning McQueen replica followed by Tyler Blankenship in second and Larry Russell, Jr. in third.
The four-cylinder Hornets had two separate features. The first was a tight race between Fred Reed Jr. and Bruce Dulgar, but was won on an exciting late race pass by Dulgar. The second Hornet feature was dominated by Jeff Dodd. Todd Rush finished behind Dodd and Mike Bell drove his #61 car into third place.
NASCAR Stars Kenny Wallace, Ken Schrader, Tony Stewart and local Promoter Bob Sargent purchased Macon Speedway in January of 2007.

MACON SPEEDWAY SATURDAY NIGHT – FAST FIVE RACER APPRECIATION – LATE MODELS $1500 TO WIN
(Macon, IL) Racing took a turn toward the exciting at Macon Speedway Saturday night, with a $1500 pot for the winner of the Late Model feature race plus additional prizes. The first leg of the FAST FIVE Racer Appreciation Series was the first major Late Model event of the season for Macon Speedway.
The action started in the heats, with Terry Babb of Decatur receiving damage to the left side of his car in a turn two mishap. Undaunted, Babb finished second to Kyle Logue of Cisco.
The Hogan Grain/Kubota Sportsman were a crowd pleaser tonight, putting on an outstanding show with pole sitter Shane Tomlin of Pawnee, and Mike Pickering of Decatur battling for the lead. Pickering went on to win the Hogan Grain/Kubota Sportsman feature, with Tomlin second and Norm Wood of Sullivan third.
BARBECK Communications Modifieds took to the track with the crowd wondering if this feature event would be win number five for Kyle Logue. Al Crawley and Shawn Bohm, both of Decatur, led the charge from the green flag. By lap 8 Crawley had a quarter-track lead over his competition, but a caution brought the field back on his tail. Still Crawley won the event with little trouble. Randy Myers of Springfield worked his way from a twelfth starting position to place second, and Kyle Logue of Cisco settled for third tonight.
A solid field of Late Models vied for the $1500 prize, but in the end it was Jayme Zider of Greenfield, WI, who took home the cash and additional prizes. Terry Babb of Decatur and Mike Hammerle of St. Charles, MO, started in the front. Zider found the front and stuck tight in the turns to stay in the lead until the end. Babb finished second, and Cory Daugherty of Blue Mound finished third.
Street Stocks have a very large presence at Macon Speedway and put on a tremendous feature showing. Steve Ewing of Decatur once again piloted the ‘Lightning McQueen’ machine to a win after starting third. Terry Reed of Decatur was second, and Jim Quinn of Farmer City was third.
Two Hornet features ended the evening’s excitement. The first was won by Fred Reed Jr. of Decatur , followed by Steve Dulgar of Decatur and Todd Rush of Pawnee, IL. The second Hornet feature was won by Bruce Dulgar, Decatur, followed by hard charger Joe Reed, Decatur, who moved to second after starting eleventh and Michael Pundt of Decatur in third.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
MACON SPEEDWAY SATURDAY NIGHT – MERIDIAN SCHOOL NIGHT, SALUTE TO MOMS, CRAZY CHICKS N CARS
(Macon, IL) Macon Speedway’s Racing on Saturday night was once again exciting and played to a full house of fans. 110 cars were able to take advantage of Macon’s new pit area and tonight’s tribute to the Meridian schools and Mom was fun for all.
With the sun going down over the backstretch, the heat races were warming up the track. Underdogs pushed their way to a few impressive finishes. Brian McLemore of Decatur held off heavy favorite Kyle Logue for hat most have seemed like an endless number of laps.
As the feature contenders were being worked out, Macon Speedway featured the Crazy Chicks N Cars race, raced by won by a stretch by Angela Reed. Dixie Kreher finished in second place.
The feature races started strong with a fiery Sportsman race, lead by four different drivers. The number 27 of Greg Kimmons squeezed by for the lead of a race that was led mostly by Norm Wood out of Sullivan. Third place finisher Dave Smith stayed with the leaders through the race, shooting his car around the outside of every turn.
Kyle Logue of Cisco won his fourth straight Modified feature race by starting from the pole position, and leading every lap. Everyone wanted to see who would challenge Logue. Al Crawley from Decatur looked like the premiere challenger. Crawley used the high, fast outside line, moving his car from fourth to second place in only a few laps. But at lap 13 Crawley’s car lost its grip and clipped the turn two wall, ending his night. Jeremy Nichols, second place, and Dave Crawley Jr., third place, couldn’t catch up.
The street stock feature race was led mostly by Decatur’s Steve Ewing and his #95 “Lightning McQueen” car. Ewing moved to the outside to move from third to the lead and never looked back. The smooth driving Mike Pickering couldn’t run down the leader. Brian Cassell, from Decatur, placed third.
Terry Babb started on the pole for the Late Model feature race. Babb had won his heat by using the outside of the track to make a last lap pass. In the feature, his car wouldn’t stick. Babb tried the outside lane a few times without any luck and resorted to playing defense on the bottom of the track. Kyle Logue’s car had plenty of grip, and used the speed of the outer line to pass Babb. Babb settled into second and got a few passing opportunities from caution flags, but couldn’t capitalize. Mike Hammerle of St. Charles, Missouri placed third.
With 27 hornets racing at Macon this evening, the racing fans got an extra hornet feature. In the first of two features, Lance Johnson took the lead early. A few laps in, Johnson’s car began to spew white smoke out behind him. “I think I started losing the clutch.” Johnson remarked. His engine held on long enough to get him the win. Michael Pundt and James Hankins were the runners-up. The second hornet feature was dominated by Joe Reed’s number 22 that gripped the bottom of the track.  Weekly racing at Macon Speedway features five UMP sanctioned divisions: Late Model, Modified, Sportsman, Street Stock and Hornet. New for 2007 is the addition of the C.A.R.S. Late Models.
On Saturday, May 19, gates at Macon Speedway will open at 5:00 PM. Racing starts at 7:00.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Macon Speedway-Cinco de Mayo Celebration plus Kenny’s Crazy Car Caper
(Macon, IL) Weather was questionable throughout much of Central Illinois for any outdoor activities, but the skies opened up and the sun shined on Macon Speedway. With the knowledge that the 1/5th mile track was open for business, 125 cars and a full house of race fans showed up at Macon Speedway for an incredible night of racing.
The second Street Stock heat provided some really fun moments for the fans as the “Lightning McQueen” replica from the PIXAR movie “CARS” was put to the test when driver Steve Ewing of Decatur made the pass for first on lap five. Ewing, no stranger to victory lane, once again carried the checkered flag.
15 laps of excitement is what the Sportsman Feature was all about. This race was handled by “Pee Wee”, Dave Smith, from start to finish scoring his first feature win of 2007. In three weeks, the Sportsman feature has been won by three different drivers.
Decatur’s Kyle Logue has been an unstoppable force in the BARBECK Communications Modified division. On Cinco de Mayo, it was no different. For the third straight week, Logue finished ahead of the field and continues to stretch out his BARBECK Communications Modified point standings lead.
A top of the line Street Stock feature entertained the fans as Mike Pickering made it two-in-a-row.
Starting defending track champion Kyle Logue on the front row has been a bad sign for his competitors as Logue has taken the first two Late Model features at Macon Speedway. Logue continued to stay on a roll once again winning the Late Model feature. The win gives him three feature wins in both the Late Models and the BARBECK Communications Modifieds. Three of the top ten finishers in the Late Model division were running C.A.R.S. Crate Late Models.
For the second time in three weeks, defending track champion Joe Reed was victorious in the Hornets. Starting on the pole and weaving his way in and out of traffic, Reed was able to overcome the tough competition and claim the checkered flag.
Macon Speedway stock car racing returns next Saturday night, May 12, with Meridian School Night and the pre-Mother’s Day Crazy Chicks in Cars promotion.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
MACON SPEEDWAY SATURDAY NIGHT SUMMARY
(Macon, IL) Macon Speedway fans were able to meet and show appreciation to their favorite drivers before the start of the evening’s racing program tonight. A large number of cars and drivers lined the 1/5 mile oval to spend time with their fans.
The Sportsman division set the stage for a night of exciting and terrific racing. For the second time in as many weeks, Greg Kimmons of Pleasant Plains was able to fight off a tough field and win the first heat. With that, an action-packed night of racing was under way.
In the BARBECK Communications Modified heat, Randy Myers of Springfield won his first race of the year. The second heat was certainly one to be remembered as Al Crawley was able to make the pass on Dave Eckel and hold off Dave Crawley, Jr. and Jim Leka (who was driving Roger Ater’s number 90) for his first checkered flag of 2007.
Decatur native Terry Babb returned to Macon Speedway and from the pole, he was able to notch his first win of the year in his Late Model heat as he held off Oreana’s Don Cisco III.
On this night of memories, one will stand out for Chatham’s Katie Lord. From the front row outside starting position, she was able to hold off Brian Cassell for her first-ever checkered flag at Macon Speedway.
Greg Kimmons already had a heat win to his credit going into the Sportsman feature and when the checkered flag was in the air for the finish, Greg Kimmons was in victory lane for his first feature win in 2007.
Kyle Logue started behind Al Crawley on the inside of the second row but when it was over, he had his second feature win of the season in the BARBECK Communications Modifieds. Racing with Jeff Leka, Al Crawley and Dave Crawley, Jr. throughout the 20 laps brought along a wonderful ovation from the packed house at Macon Speedway. Asked if he knew who was following him and how he’d have to race, he responded, “They are good, clean drivers. I knew I was in for a great race.” Logue passed Dave Crawley, Jr. for the top spot on lap six and never looked back.
Kyle Logue and Greg Kimmons had the front row for the Late Model feature. Both were feature winners in different divisions earlier in the night but it would once again be Kyle Logue coming out of the racecar with checkered flag in hand. For the third time in his career and the second time this season in back-to-back weeks, Logue had won the BARBECK Communications Modified feature and the Late Model feature. Leading all 20 laps was Logue, who finished in front of Kimmons, Mike Hammerlee and Don Cisco III.
Already a winner twice in the evening with Sportsman and Street Stock heat wins, Mike Pickering was looking for the checkered flag in the Street Stock feature. Pickering found victory lane after and exciting last lap finish. Pickering was followed by defending two-time Track Champion Larry Russell, Jr.
Jeremy Reed started on the pole in the number one spot and that’s how he finished. Not knowing he was going to race until later in the day, Reed came out onto the track and raced strong, weaving in and out of danger because of lapped traffic. Reed’s second-ever appearance in a feature turned out to be the one he’ll remember most as he finished ahead of Lance Johnson, Bruce Dulgar and Joe Reed.
NASCAR Stars Kenny Wallace, Ken Schrader, Tony Stewart and local Promoter Bob Sargent purchased Macon Speedway in January of 2007.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
MACON SPEEDWAY OPENER ONE FOR THE RECORD BOOKS
(Macon, IL) Mother Nature finally smiled on Macon Speedway Saturday night. Fans and racers smiled, too, as 130 cars played to a packed grandstand for the first racing action of the 2007 season. The Easter Bunny made a visit to greet kids at the gate with eggs containing prizes and candy. Six bicycles were presented to lucky winners in three age divisions.
2007 racing action started with the Sportsman heats. 27 Greg Kimmons bested 9 Mike Pickering for the first Macon Speedway win of the season.

From turn four of the green flag lap in the Sportsman Feature, pole-sitter 18 Shane Tomlin had the race won.  The defending Sportsman Track Champion was able to maneuver through lap traffic and get to the finish line unscathed for the first Macon Speedway feature win of 2007.

The BARBECK Communications Modified feature got off to a rough start when after the green flag waved, front-row outside 10 Curt Rhoades spun around and nearly took half of the field with him.  Rhoades was able to avoid the accident he caused but other drivers like 35 Clark Robertson and 37 Dave Crawley, Jr. weren't as lucky.  A second start yielded the same result but this time out of the fourth turn coming to the first lap, Rhoades again lost control of the car and spun around, only to take 50 Jeff Ray and 90 Roger Ater with him.  When the dust finally cleared, WFO Kyle Logue (the pole-sitter) had won the first BARBECK Communications Modified feature for 2007.

In the very next race, 1 Kyle Logue was in a very familiar spot.  Logue had the pole for the Late Model main event.  In a race that did not feature the same drama as the BARBECK Communications Modified main, Logue was able to end up in victory lane with his second feature win of the night, making Macon Speedway history.  On July 8, 2006, Logue entered the record books as being only the second-ever driver to win both the Late Models and Modified features on the same night.  The first driver to double up was Marty Hiser.  Logue is the only driver in Macon Speedway history to win both Late Models and Modified features on the same night twice.

Starting in the second row outside, heat one winner 22 Steve Ewing had the difficult task of working past V8 Jim Farley and heat three winner 11 Terry Reed to get to the lead, but he did it.  Ewing picked up his first Street Stock feature win at Macon Speedway since 2005 and with several former Track Champions on his tail including multi-time Track Champion 99 Mike Pickering in second and fourth-place finisher, defending Track Champion X7 Larry Russell, Jr.

The demolition derby field was set when the Hornet feature took the track.  28 cars lined up on the track with only 10 laps to get to the front.  Starting third row-outside was defending Track Champion 22nd Joe Reed and through some heavy traffic, he was able to get the first Hornet feature win of 2007.
Macon Speedway is back in action on Saturday, April 28 featuring Driver/Sponsor Appreciation night and a special time for Fan Photos and Autographs. Gates open at 5:00 PM and racing starts at 7:00.

MACON SPEEDWAY ANNOUNCES WEEKLY C.A.R.S. CRATE LATE MODEL DIVISION

(Macon, IL) 1-22-07,
Innovation will be prominent when Macon Speedway re-opens under new ownership on March 31.  New to Macon Speedway in 2007 will be the introduction of C.A.R.S Crate Late Models to the weekly racing program.

Participants will be eligible to participate in up to three point funds.  In addition to the local track point fund, Crate Late Model teams will also be eligible for point funds offered nationally by UMP and the Crate American Racing Series (C.A.R.S.).   UMP is a national sanctioning body supporting weekly racing in many divisions including Late Models. C.A.R.S. is a newly formed Dirt Late Model Weekly Racing Series designed to help bring more racers and fans to the track.

Many track operators and officials at both UMP and C.A.R.S realize a need for an economical solution to today’s rising cost of racing.  Macon Speedway is pleased to offer a new division that has so much support.  It is anticipated that Crate Late Models will be an affordable solution for those who want to enter Late Model racing and in some cases, will be a stepping-stone to Super Late Models.

For the convenience of weekly racers, Macon Speedway will utilize current car and body rules for the Crate Late Models.  Crate Late Models at Macon Speedway can choose either of the GM Performance Parts 602 and 604 Circle Track Racing Engines.  Macon Speedway is hosting a meeting for racers on Sunday, January 28 to discuss rules and answer questions.

For additional information about Crate Late Models, visit www.crateamericanracingseries.com

Full speed ahead at Macon Speedway
MACON - Macon Speedway, on the brink of extinction four months ago, is roaring back like a race car blazing toward the checkered flag.

The venerable stock-car track, which has been a staple of Central Illinois summer entertainment since it opened in 1946, has been bought by a unique ownership group that includes NASCAR stars Tony Stewart, Ken Schrader and Kenny Wallace, as well as Macon native and race promoter Bob Sargent.

The four-man ownership group, which has formed its own corporation called Macon Speedway LLC, has the experience, knowledge and resources to renovate the track and will begin doing so immediately, gearing toward opening night on Saturday, March 31.

"These are exciting times," said Sargent, who brokered the deal and will make the official announcement at a 3 p.m. news conference today at the Orr Building at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield. Wallace will be in attendance.

It's not the first time Sargent has partnered with NASCAR stars in the race business.

Sargent is part owner of the Paducah International Raceway in Kentucky along with co-owners Schrader, Stewart and Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Sargent and Schrader bought and sold United Midwest Promoters, a stock car sanctioning body.

This partnership made sense, Sargent said, because it involves drivers who got their start in dirt-track racing at facilities like Macon Speedway.

"People ask why someone like Tony Stewart, who is a Cup champion with NASCAR, would care to get involved with a small track like Macon Speedway. Actually, there are two reasons," Sargent said.

"One is a financial reason. At some point, these guys are all going to retire. Racing is a business for them. They would rather own a dirt track than a restaurant.

"Two, for all four of us, including me, dirt-track racing has been our life. Tony is the same. He owns a race team, but being a dirt-track racer is in his blood, and they're a different type of breed. It's what we do. It's what we enjoy."

Stewart echoed that sentiment and said he's excited to be one of Macon Speedway's new owners.

"To me, this is still grass-roots racing," said Stewart, who will be in the field for the Daytona 500 on Feb. 18. "I love dirt-track racing, and I feel fortunate to be involved with the new ownership of Macon Speedway.

"With all this track's great history, and with this ownership group, I think we can do a lot of good for a long time to come."

Sargent has already hired two people who will help with the everyday operation of the track.

One is Tonya Moschell, who arrives from Weedsport, N.Y., where she was manager of sales and marketing for DIRT MotorSports Northeast. She will be handling much of the track's marketing and advertising ventures, as well as working for Sargent's Track Enterprises business, which stages races at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield and DuQuoin, the Hoosier Hundred USAC Silver Crown Race at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis as well as single-night races at a variety of tracks.

The other is Don Cisco of Blue Mound, a former Macon Speedway driver, who will maintain upkeep of the track and look after race operations on behalf of the owners.

Sargent himself said he'll be at the track some initially but does not plan to be a part of the nightly racing program as he was when he was sole owner of the track after purchasing it from founder Wayne Webb in 1985.

After successfully operating Macon Speedway for several years, Sargent sold the track, and it was operated by Ron and Helen Tapp for three seasons and for the past six seasons by Webb's son, Rich Webb.

After the track came on hard times, Webb relinquished control back to Sargent, who put together the new ownership group.

Armed with money, new ideas and the backing of three NASCAR stars, Sargent believes Macon Speedway can bounce back strong.

"Attendance will grow back, I'm confident, although it's going to be a challenge," he said. "The crowds have been bad for several years. Across the country, the majority of tracks are not doing well. But there are some doing very well, and we had a great season last year at Paducah."

Renovation of the track will start immediately, he said.

"We'll tear the whole fence down and start over," he said. "We're going to be working on the bleachers. We've got 100 ideas. Twenty of them we'll get in place for 2007, and we'll work on the other 80 as we move forward."

Some significant changes are likely in the race format, Sargent said.

Among those being strongly considered:

n A switch to what Sargent called "Crate Late Models," where drivers use identically prepared General Motors factory-issued engines costing $3,000 each, about 1/10th of what some late-model drivers are now investing.

"It's been on the East Coast for several years. It was very successful at Paducah last year. The drivers have more fun. The fans see a better show. And it's more affordable," Sargent said.

n He intends to also race modifieds, sportsman, street stocks and four-cylinder Hornets.

n Sargent said the new ownership intends to scrap traditional qualifying.

"It takes 35 to 55 minutes to do it, and we feel we can better utilize the time racing," he said. "We use a pill draw, and it mixes faster cars into the field. You have to race harder. It's better racing for the fans, and you finish earlier," which he said was a growing concern in the community.

n Use of the Turn 4 "lounge" will be sold by the night, and he intends to bring back events which have been successful for him in the past, including the Lite Beer Twin 50s, Herald & Review 100, USAC midgets the night before the Springfield Mile, a national ATV motorcycle race on the weekend of Decatur Celebration, the Wayne Webb Memorial and a Memorial Day race that includes Schrader in the field.

And, Sargent said, co-owners Stewart and Wallace will be appearing at the track, and both will likely race.

"Tony raced at Paducah three times on his own last year before he got involved as an owner," Sargent said. "And when these guys come, they sometimes bring their friends," guys like Carl Edwards, Rusty Wallace and Martin Truex Jr. "Even Jimmie Johnson wants to get involved," Sargent said.

Sargent said this venture does not slow his interest in building another track, perhaps in the Bloomington-Normal area. That, too, would involve an ownership team that includes NASCAR drivers.

"We're still looking up there," he said. "There are a lot of (NASCAR) drivers wanting to be involved."
