Tri-City Speedway Results for Friday, July 22nd

Pontoon Beach, IL (July 22nd, 2011) Randy Korte of Highland, Illinois raced to victory in the UMP DIRTcar Late Model main event at Tri-City Speedway. Korte took the lead at the drop of the green flag and led all twenty-five laps of the main event. Chad Zobrist, also of Highland, made a late race charge trying to reel in Korte for the lead, but came up short and would settle with a second place finish. Rickey Frankel of Quincy, Illinois would finish third, while Mark Voigt and Rusty Griffaw rounded out the top five.

Michael Long of Quincy, Illinois would take the win in the UMP DIRTcar Modified division. A crash early in the race eliminate front row starter Matt Mevert and damaged the other front starter, Tim Hancock. The crash occurred when the leaders were closing in on the lapped car of Will Hicks, who then spun in turn three. The leaders would spin to avoid Hicks and Hancock and Mevert made hard contact. Hancock was able to restart the feature and led several laps before being overtaken by Long. Hancock would hold off Scott Weber to finish second. Dane Gundaker would finish fourth behind Weber while Steve Lach just edged Steve Shive at the line for fifth.

Gordy Gundaker claimed his first UMP DIRTcar Pro Late Model feature win 0f 2011 at Tri-City Speedway. Gundaker took the lead at the drop of the green flag and pull ahead to decisive lead early on in the main event. As Gundaker got into lapped traffic, Dustin Griffin began to reel in Gundaker for the top spot. With just three laps remaining, Griffin would slide in under Gundaker going into turn one and move up in front of him, but Gundaker would dive back underneath Griffin as they exited turn two and regain the lead. Griffin would get one final shot on the last lap as he drove in hard to turns three and four. Griffin would get along side Gundaker but Gundaker's momentum would power him back ahead down the front stretch and to victory. Griffin would get second. Last weeks feature winner Mark Oller would finish third. Rick Salter, a UMP DIRTcar Super Late Model competitor who was making his first start in the UMP DIRTcar Pro Late Model division at Tri-City Speedway, would finish fourth. Bobby Martintoni would round out the top five.

Tommy Gaither would hold off Richie Gabriel to claim the UMP DIRTcar Factory Stock (Street Stock) main event. Creg Cannon would finish third with Ricky Huebner finishing fourth. Jason Worley would claim the fifth spot.

Earl Pryor earned the win in the UMP DIRTcar Sport Compact main event with Christian Lee taking second, Jacob Rexing third, Rodney George fourth and Eldon Hemken fifth.

PCRA UMP PRO CRATE LATE MODELS

THURSDAY, JULY 28TH

MAKE 1ST APPEARANCE AT TRI-CITY SPEEDWAY

Tri-City Speedway to host Professional Crate Racers of America (PCRA) Season Championship & UMP DIRTcar Pro Late Model Championship Events!

Print E-mail
Pontoon Beach, IL (June 27th, 2011) Tri-City Speedway will host one of the biggest weekends for crate late models ever held in the Midwest on October 14th & 15th, 2011. Two Series Championships will be decided on one weekend at the fast 3/8 mile clay oval.

It kicks off on Friday, October 14th with the Professional Crate Racers of America (PCRA) Series competing for their Season Championship. The PCRA Series has races in Missouri, Illinois and Kentucky and has drivers from Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana and Arkansas competing in the series.
Then on Saturday, October 15th, the UMP DIRTcar Pro Late Models Season Championship will be decided with a race paying $2,500 to win! With over 200 drivers having competed so far in 2011 in the UMP DIRTcar Pro Late Model Series, look for a great field of cars to be on hand to battle it out for the Championship.
The PCRA and UMP DIRTcar Pro Late Model Series use almost the same rules package, so cars and drivers can compete in both events.
Tri-City Speedway promoter Kevin Gundaker absolutely loves the crate late model series and wants to help in every way possible to further crate racing along in the Midwest. His son Gordy Gundaker also competes in the weekly UMP DIRTcar Pro Late Model Series at Tri-City Speedway.
PCRA Series Founder and President Mark Voigt is super excited about the big weekend of crate racing at Tri-City Speedway. He says Tri-City Speedway provides fantastic racing for the crate late models and the track has welcomed crate late models since their introduction to the Midwest several years ago. To have the PCRA Series initial Season Champion crowned at Tri-City Speedway is going to be a great moment.
Tri-City Speedway is located just across the Mississippi River from St. Louis in Pontoon Beach, Illinois just south I-270 at exit 4 (Route 203).
For more information, visit www.tricityspeedway.net or visit the series websites at www.dirtcarump.com and www.pcralatemodelseries.com.

Birkhofer Blisters Beach by Don Martin

Brian Birkhofer wanted to race at Tri-City Speedway which was holding its biggest race ever but did not know if he was going to be able to do it because he doesn't have a full time crew and the race was taking part later in the week and not a weekend show. A couple of good buddies of his Fred and Darren took time off from work to help Brian. They kicked off the week Wednesday at Deer Creek in Minnesota where Brian finished second behind Josh Richards. Drove back to the shop after the races to get ready for Tri-City Speedway's Battle at the Beach paying $20,000 to win and would be joined by Brian Daugherty of Integra Racing Shocks. The last time Daugherty was at Tri-City he helped Tim McCreadie take home the checkers in a $7,000 to win UMP Special. Daugherty and Birkhofer have worked together for many years and have a great working relationship.

It needs to be mentioned that Scott Bloomquist had a streak of five straight wins earlier in the season snapped by Birkhofer at 34 Raceway in Burlington. Bloomer had won four in a row heading into the Battle of the Beach, well it happened again and to that same guy Birkhofer.

Brian has always been pretty good at Tri-City, he won the last big race on the big half mile when he damn near lapped the entire field at a Summer National race. He will tell you it took him forever to figure out the big half and when he did finally promoter Kevin Gundaker changed the configuration to the track now which is a 3/8 oval. Coming into the Battle of the Beach Brian had success on the new track with three wins and now has won the first hundred lapper and biggest payout to date of $20,000.

It was Brian's third appearance this year at Tri-City, back in May he was involved in a crash in the heat race and just a couple of weeks ago he looked to have a dominant car during the Summer National special when his left front wheel fell off. It just shows you the character of Birkhofer, he might have been down a bit, but he never quit.

Thursday Brian qualified in the top three and won the second heat race. He drew the outside of row one for the feature event Friday night. He told me after the heat race the car could have been better and he needed to make a few adjustments. The team made some changes during the afternoon and more would follow after his hot lap session before the main event.

When the green flag dropped in the feature polesitter Don O'Neal and Brian raced side by side the first eight laps of the race before Brian pulled away on the high side exiting turn four. It was clear early that his competition on this night were going to have hands full with the "Muscatine Mad Man". Brian once in the lead was running a smooth race on the slick black surface starting to pull away from the field. He ran a flawless race this night taking his time thru the lapped traffic making no mistakes of letting Bloomer get a run on him. Scott got close a few times, getting within a couple of car lengths, but he had the same situation with the lapped cars that Birkhofer did.

In the end the best car won the race and everyone acknowledged the fact with the exception of Bloomquist. Scott was unhappy with the luck of the draw and thought it might have been a different race if he would have been on the pole since he was the fastest qualifier and won the first heat race. He had a hundred laps to get the job done on a surface that suits his racing better than anyone. Scott loves slick race tracks and lets face it he got beat at his own game on this night. The guy still finished second and ran a great race. Why can't he be more like Billy Moyer who gave Brian a firm handshake and smiled with him letting him have his moment. Billy gave Brian the respect he deserved, so why can't Scott do this, maybe Scott should have protested another race that saw him get beat my another MB Custom machine. What bothers me the most if Brian would have finished second or third he would have respected the other drivers that finished in front of him similar to what Moyer did. I gained respect for Moyer on this night and lost respect for Scott.

The Gundaker's had the largest crowd I have ever seen there on Friday and the track was in great shape, smooth and slick with only one caution the whole race. Brian in Victory lane talked about how much it meant to him winning the first big race at Gundaker's place and having to beat both Moyer and Bloomquist to get the win.

Brian Birkhofer has a great attitude and is just a fun guy to be around. There was not one boo in the crown afterwards and why would there be. On the other hand boos for Scott were quite clear after he left the race track without being interviewed, he did come back for the interview and victory lane photo but it was clear he did not want to be there.

Scott is a great driver and might be the best dirt late model driver of all time, its his attitude that needs some work.

Below are my top twenty rankings in Supers after the Battle at the Beach at Tri-City Speedway last week. Scott Bloomquist has a huge lead over Billy Moyer and Jimmy Owens. Brian Birkhofer and Shannon Babb are both now in the top ten and look to stay. Babb wrapped up the Summer Nationals winning 6 in a row.

Dan Schlieper claims UMP Summer Nationals win at Tri-City Speedway!

RECORD SETTING CAR COUNT AT TRI-CITY 52 LATE MODELS HIT THE HIGH BANKS BATTLING FOR $10,000
jdearing · June 25, 2011

Dan Schlieper

CLICK HERE FOR MORE SUMMER NATIONALS PHOTOS FROM TRI-CITY SPEEDWAY!

Pontoon Beach, IL (June 24, 2011) Dan Schlieper of Sullivan, Wisconsin claimed his third career UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals victory at Tri-City Speedway and claimed the $10,000 payday.

The race got off to an odd beginning when one of the favorites to win, Brian Birkhofer, lost his left front tire as the cars rolled out onto the racetrack to lineup for the main event. Birkhofer would have to go to the pit area and replace the tire, which ruined his chances for victory as he lost his second row starting spot and was forced to start from the rear of the field. On the initial start, trouble would find two more top contenders as Billy Moyer and Chad Simpson would get together in turn three on the first lap. That would end Simpson's night, but Moyer would be able to restart. It was Pinconning, Michigan's Jeep Van Wormer grabbing the lead at the drop of the green flag. Van Wormer would open up a decisive lead in the early laps and lead the first twenty-two laps of the forty lap main event. A caution on lap sixteen for Brian Shirley, Jason Feger and Brian Birkhofer would take away Van Wormer's big lead. Schlieper went to work on Van Wormer immediately after the restart, with the two racing side-by-side for several laps before Schlieper would finally take control on lap twenty-three. Meanwhile, Billy Moyer started moving in on the lead duo. Moyer would soon dispose of Van Wormer to take the second spot and began trying to reel in Schlieper. Moyer would finally catch Schlieper with five laps to go. Moyer tried every line to get past Schlieper for the lead but would not be successful and would have to settle for a second place finish. Shannon Babb had his car dialed in for the feature event as he charged from the sixteenth starting spot and moved past Van Wormer late in the race to claim the third spot. Van Wormer would hold off Matt Miller to finish fourth with Miller taking fifth.

Monster Energy™ Sprint Series Announces Five Night/Five Race Sprintweek!

2011 Monster Energy™ Sprint Car Series "Illinois Speedweek" Schedule

Wednesday, July 27 - Spoon River Speedway (Canton, IL)

Thursday, July 28 - Tri-City Speedway (Granite City, IL)

Friday, July 29 - Jacksonville Speedway (Jacksonville, IL)

Saturday, July 30 - Macon Speedway (Macon, IL)

Sunday, July 31 - Shepp's Speedway (Alexander, IL)

(Bill W) June 24, 2011 - The Monster Energy™ Sprint Car Series continues to roll on with a successful season, and an "Illinois Speedweek" has now been added to the schedule. The Speedweek will include five events over five nights beginning Wednesday, July 27 and ending Sunday, July 31.

On Wednesday, July 27, hit the Spoon River Speedway south of Canton, Illinois! The speeds at Spoon River Speedway are legendary, as are the drivers that have won at the high-banked 3/8-mile facility. Names like Standridge, Moughan, McCarl, Weyant, Doty, Beechler, Wright and many more have graced Victory Lane at the track sometimes called "Mini-Eldora", due to its high banks and high speeds! The event will serve as a preview the "Tom Knowles Memorial" at the facility Saturday, September 17.

On Thursday, July 28, the series will head down to the Tri-City Speedway near Granite City, Illinois. The series' scheduled event there on June 17 was lost to showers, and the fans, track officials and drivers are excited about the 3/8-mile racy bullring being part of Speedweek.

On Friday, July 29, Jacksonville Speedway on the Morgan County Fairgrounds in Jacksonville, Illinois will play host. Terry McCarl took the first series' feature ever at the ¼-mile banked oval in May!

On Saturday, July 30, another bullring comes into play. Macon Speedway in Macon, Illinois will host the Monster Energy™ Sprint Car Series for the first time ever!

Finally, on Sunday, July 31, the Shepp's Speedway near Alexander, Illinois promises more close and tight action. This will also be the inaugural appearance for the series at Shepp's!

Stay tuned for plenty of updates concerning "Illinois Speedweek"!

The next scheduled appearance for the Monster Energy™ Sprint Car Series will be Friday, July 1, for the "Leon Smith Memorial" at the Jacksonville Speedway.

To check out more information on upcoming events, Rules and Procedures, Drivers, Schedules, Points, Updates and More for the Monster Energy Sprint Car Series presented by the Midwest Open Wheel Association, visit the series' website at www.MidwestOpenWheel.com!

Smith, Griffaw, Lyons, Gaither, Pryor & Gibson take wins at Tri-City Speedway!

jdearing · May 21, 2011

Tri-City SpeedwayCLICK HERE FOR MORE PHOTOS FROM THIS EVENT!

Pontoon Beach, IL (May 20th, 2011) For the second straight week, Tri-City Speedway managed to avoid the forecasted thunderstorms and get in a complete program of racing. It didn't look good early on, as the skies opened up with a brief shower right as the first session of hotlaps rolled onto the track. However, the showers were very light and lasted only a few minutes. The wind was the main weather issue as steady 30-40mph winds with gusts near 50mph blew for most of the night. None of that prevented 114 racecars from rolling into the pit area and providing some excellent side by side racing.

All five of the regular divisions featured great battles for the lead!

In the UMP DIRTcar Late Model division, a classic two car battle for the lead with Craig Smith and Randy Korte raged on for fifteen of the twenty-five lap main event. The race got started with Michael Kloos jumping out front ahead of Korte and leading the first five laps. Kloos would encounter a tough break when his left rear tire went flat on lap five and ended his night. That would setup a great battle for the top spot as Korte and Smith raced side by side and swapped the lead several times as they weaved through lapped traffic. A late race caution on lap nineteen would reset the field with Smith out front and Korte in second in what appeared to setup a great shootout to the end. Korte would jump the cushion in turn two on lap twenty and lose sight of Smith over the final laps, allowing Smith to sail to victory. Korte would hang on to second. Chad Zobrist would work his way up to take the third spot with Jason McBride finishing fourth. Tanner English would round out the top five.

The UMP DIRTcar Modified division would provide one of the wildest races of the night. Rusty Griffaw and Michael Long would start side by side on the front row and trade slide jobs for the lead in each turn for the first four laps. On lap four as Griffaw stormed into turn three on the low side, his car would bicycle onto two wheels and get so high the right side door just narrowly miss digging into the ground and sending him flipping. Griffaw would save the car from flipping and as the car slammed back onto four wheels, it would tear back the left side door panel on his car causing it to pretty much block his view out his left side window opening. Griffaw would only lose one spot as Long got past for the lead while he recovered. Long would open up a nice lead over Griffaw after and appeared to be on his way to a huge win. However, a late race caution with only three laps remaining would put Griffaw right back on the rear bumper of Long for the restart. It would only take to the first turn after the restart for the fireworks to start again. Griffaw would put a slide job on Long for the lead going through turns one and two with Long fighting back down the back stretch and returning the favor in turns three and four. As they took the white flag, Griffaw would once again slide ahead of Long for the lead. This time Griffaw protected the bottom going down the back stretch and into turn three. He would hold off Long at the line and take the win. Bobby Regot III would finish a close third with Kyle Steffens taking fourth. Tim Hancock would round out the top five.

In the UMP Pro Late Model main event, it appeared Dustin Griffin was going to dominate the entire event as he opened up a huge lead as he paced the field for the first fourteen laps of the twenty lap main event. However, Nick Lyons was charging through the field from his ninth place starting spot in the Black Pearl 8 Ball machine. Lyons would track Griffin down and the two would race side by side and battle through lapped traffic in the closing laps. Griffin would encounter a tough break on as he raced through turn four coming down to take the white flag, slight contact with a lapped car would get him extremely sideways. He would lose a ton of momentum and have to cut through the infield and back onto the front stretch, losing eight or nine positions in the process. Lyons would pull away to get the win. Josh Carroll, who had taken over second would slip on the final lap allowing Andrew Johns to get his best finish ever at Tri-City Speedway as he crossed the line second. Bobby Martintoni would come home third. Carroll would recover and finish fourth with Rylan Dagg rounding out the top five.

The Street Stocks wouldn't disappoint the crowd either as Tommy Gaither and Ricky Huebner battled for the lead for all fifteen laps of the main event. The two raced side by side almost every lap with Creg Cannon right on their rear bumpers. Gaither would edge Huebner for the win by a car length to win his second straight main event at Tri-City Speedway. Cannon would drop out with mechanical problems in the closing laps and that would allow Brent Weaver to finish in the third spot with Buddy Love taking fourth. Todd Erickson would round out the top five.

The UMP DIRTcar Sport Compacts would put on a great race for the lead as well. Joey Haun would lead the opening laps with Justin Suhre, Earl Pryor and Jacob Rexing all making it a four car battle for the top spot. Pryor would wrestle the lead from Haun and then Suhre would move in on Pryor and those two would race side by side for a couple of laps before Suhre would be sidelined with mechanical problems. That allowed last week's feature winner Jacob Rexing to move in on Pryor in the closing laps. Rexing would get a nose along side Pryor on the final lap, but would come up just short as Pryor took the win. Willy Myers would finish third with Travis Horner fourth and Cody Weaver fifth.

Kiefer, Wilson, Bauer, Gaither & Rexing take wins at Tri-City Speedway!

jdearing · May 14, 2011

Tri-City Speedway

Pontoon Beach, IL (May 13th, 2011) Tri-City Speedway was able to dodge all the wet weather and kicked off their 2011 racing season with some great racing action.

Dewayne Kiefer of St. Genevieve, MO claimed the UMP DIRTcar Late Model season opening feature event. Kiefer was able sweep the nights racing action as he also won the heat and dash events. Kiefer took the lead at the drop of the green flag in the main event and it appeared that he was going to run away with the win, but Billy Laycock worked his way to the second spot and then ran down Kiefer in the closing laps to challenge Kiefer for the top spot. Laycock tried all kinds of moves to get the lead from Kiefer, but Kiefer held him off to take the win. Rick Salter would cross the line in third with Craig Smith taking fourth. Chad Zobrist rounded out the top five.

Vance Wilson of Frankford, MO put on a dominating performance enroute to winning the UMP DIRTcar Modified main event. Wilson started in the seventh position in main event quickly charged toward the front. On lap seven, Wilson drove past early leader Scott Weber and pulled away to a big lead. The only thing that could slow Wilson down were a couple of late cautions. However, Wilson would take command on each of the restarts and would go to victory. Weber would take the second spot with Mike Harrison finishing third. Tim Hancock took the fourth spot and Bobby Regot III rounded out the top five.

Jordan Bauer claimed his first event UMP DIRTcar Pro Late Model feature event. Bauer took the lead at the drop of the green flag and held off the challenges of Matt Santel to pick up the win. Jason Zobrist finished third with Bobby Martintoni taking fourth. Ed Lenhardt would come home in fifth.

Tommy Gaither raced to victory in the Street Stock division. Gaither, piloting the only pickup truck in the Street Stock division, used the outside lane to power past early leader Todd Erickson to get the win. Erickson would finish in the second spot with Stephen Fohne taking third. Buddy Love would cross the line in fourth with Fred Sparks taking fifth.

Jacob Rexing continued his hot streak of winning UMP DIRTcar Sport Compact feature events. Rexing, who had won two features at other tracks within the last week, jumped out front at the drop of the green flag and held off Earl Pryor for the win. Willy Myers would finish third with Travis Horner taking fourth and Justin Suhre fifth.

Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series to Sanction Tri-City Speedway's Biggest Event Ever

"Battle at the Beach 100"

2 Days

$20K

Thursday & Friday, July 14 & 15

WAYCROSS, GA (February 24, 2011) - Officials of the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series, along with Tri City (IL) Speedway promoters, Kevin and Tammy Gundaker have announced that the series will sanction the biggest race in speedway history.  On July 14th and 15th the Budweiser sponsored "Battle at the Beach 100," will highlight the track's 50th Anniversary. The event will pay a whopping $20,000 to win. Lucas Oil Studios of Corona, CA will film the event. The "Battle at the Beach 100" will be televised on SPEED at a later date.

The 2-day extravaganza at Tri-City Speedway will start on Thursday, July 14th with time trials and heat races, followed on Friday night, July 15th with the B-Mains and the 100-lap, $20,000 to win feature event.  BIGFOOT will also be appearing at Tri-City Speedway during the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series. "Any chance to appear in our hometown is fantastic," stated Vice President of BIGFOOT 4x4, Inc. Bob Trent, "Thank you Lucas Oil for having us!"

Originally, the event was scheduled as a 1-day, $10,000 to win event on the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series 2011 schedule, released last October. Kevin Gundaker contacted series officials and wanted to expand the event to a 2-day show, which will pay the highest winning purse in the history of the track.

"We have worked with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series now for six years and we feel the relationship we have built with them over that time has been a tremendous thing for Tri-City Speedway," said Gundaker, who will be inducted into the National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame at Florence (KY) Speedway in August.

Series Director, Ritchie Lewis reminisced. "I can remember back in the 90's when Kevin raced with us, we were out at 'The Springfield Mile'. I was a Pit Steward with Hav-A-Tampa, and remember being in turn three of the in-field and seeing him race up the backstretch. He kept waving me down every time he drove by motioning that he needed something to drink. A caution came out and I rolled up to his car on the four-wheeler as he pulled down to the edge of the track.  He said he didn't need me to pull sheet metal or anything; he said he just wanted my Gatorade! So he downed it and after the race resumed, a few laps later he was waving again, signaling that he wanted me to give him something eat under the next caution," laughed Lewis! "We always looked forward to working with him back then. He's serious but always has time for a joke or a prank, which makes people around him enjoy working to make things better at Tri City Speedway. We are very excited about working with Kevin, Tammy and the rest of the great staff at Tri-City Speedway on this 20K show in July".

Gundaker and his crew have been busy this off-season - making upgrades to the historic facility, located near the banks of the Mississippi River. "We have built a 40 x 232 building that will house a concession stand, offices and an arcade for the kids as well as a souvenir stand and restrooms.  We have made more room along the midway for the fans, after tearing down the old building. We built this new one several feet back to give everyone plenty of space to walk," said Gundaker.

The track first opened on May 30, 1961 and this year will mark the 50th Anniversary of the track which was a half-mile for several years, until Gundaker bought the facility and created a 3/8th mile oval a few years ago.

"My early memories of going to Tri-City were in the 60's when my grandpa first took me.  From there, we would go just about every night they raced, and I eventually bought a car from a racer. And the rest is history." said the 55-year-old Gundaker, who has plans to return to driving this year on a limited basis.  "I won't be racing at Tri-City for obvious reasons, but I will be hitting some of the tracks in our area to race some this season.  My son Gordy is moving up to super late models this year and I want to help him get some experience. We plan to run him full-time next year as a rookie on the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series," Gundaker stated.
